Target
Makeup and Costume Design are fundamental to the world of drama. Without
makeup there would be no scary zombies in horror films, there would be no
magical creatures in The Lord of The Rings, and they could not have filmed the
final scene from the Harry Potter films.
This booklet will look at some of the fundamentals in makeup and costume
design.
ALL THE INFORMATION YOU NEED TO COMPLETE THE TASK IS IN THIS
BOOKLET, SO MAKE SURE YOU READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY.
The questions and tasks are set out in bold
lettering and they are numbered.
Remember; if you get stuck you can ask a
number of different people for help:
1. Adults at home.
2. Your tutor.
3. Homework club.
4. Your friends.
5. Mr Grant.
You will need to read the information in this
booklet carefully in order to answer all the
questions.
TASK 1- Read the information below.
Monday/ Tuesday - Monster Makeup
Many films today need people to be transformed into magical and amazing creatures
from the goblins of Harry Potter, to the creation of a werewolf in Wolfman. Each
time we see a monster on screen some poor actor has probably been sitting on a
makeup chair for five hours as thin pieces of latex rubber have been glued onto
their face, and any part of the body the costume doesn’t cover.
Monster makeup allows your imagination to run wild. A makeup artist can create
almost anything by adding layers of silicone or rubber (prosthetics) to an actor’s
face. Some monster makeup is full body (the actor’s entire body being made up) but
for this task I only want you to concentrate on the face.
Makeup designers use facial templates to work out how they want their makeup to
look. The following picture is an example of a vampire makeup using one of these
templates. (Although this is in black and white, I expect your designs to be in FULL
COLOUR.)
Silicone forehead piece
(marked by dotted line)
allows for a ridged forehead
with a much more aggressive
eyebrow line.
Dark eye shadow will sink in
the eyes giving the face a
more skull-like appearance.
Red contact lenses give an
evil look.
Dark shading added to
cheeks to hollow out the
cheeks and give the
appearance of a corpse.
Fangs added, these cap
the teeth to give a
more natural
appearance.
Light foundation used to
bring down the colour of
the skin, giving the look
of the living dead.
Bright red lips stand out
against the pale colour of the
skin.
TASK 2- Read the following descriptions of four different monsters
and choose ONE that you want to create a makeup for. Then draw
your design onto the face template on the next page. (There is a
spare one in case you go wrong.)
SATYR
A satyr was a creature from ancient Greek mythology. It was a creature that was
part man and part goat. The key features of a satyr’s face are that it is long and
thin, with a pointed beard (even the women). A satyr would also have large teeth for
eating grass. The most recognisable thing about a satyr is that it had two goat like
horns growing out of the sides of its head.
OGRE
An ogre is a large, cruel and hideous monster. Ogres are often depicted in fairy
tales and folklore as feeding on human beings. Ogres are often depicted with a large
head, a green tint to their skin, abundant hair and beard, a voracious appetite, and a
strong body. Ogres are closely related to trolls, but are usually nastier!
BANSHEE
A banshee is a female fairy, but don’t let that fool you, she’s not very nice. The
banshee screams and wails when someone is about to die. She is usually very thin,
with bright white hair. She is also a cross between a woman and a crow, so there
needs to be something bird-like in your design if you choose this makeup.
WEREWOLF
A werewolf is a human who changes into a monstrous wolf every full moon. This
design needs you to think about how you would change the human features of your
actor into those of a wolf. The nose and mouth need to become a snarling snout, and
you need to think about how you would add hair to the face to make it look more
wolfish.
MONSTER MAKEUP DESIGN
Use FULL COLOUR
Monster:
Spare Template
Costume Design You have come up with the makeup for your monster’s face, but what about the rest
of the body? The actor playing the monster will need a costume. This might be
anything from a hairy body suit to tattered rags.
TASK 3 -Over the next two days I want you to go through the
stages of designing a costume for your monster.
Wednesday -MOOD BOARD This page should be filled with anything that can help you with ideas for your
costume design. Think about: colours, material you might use, what design you
might want, how will you fasten the costume (eg zipper, buttons etc).
TASK 3 continued.
Thursday On this page draw the costume design for your monster. You MUST show how it
looks from the FRONT and BACK.

TASK 4
FRIDAY -Pitch Your Creature Imagine a director for a new monster movie wants to see your deign. Draw a picture
of your creature as it would look in the film. This picture must show a full body
image of your creature with a spooky background appropriate for a monster
movie. Please use full colour for your design.
