RIGID RAIDER CASE STUDY

In 2007, Cargo Aids were contacted by the contractor and IPT regarding the urgentdesign of a restraint required for a vessel that was due to be commissioned thefollowing day.

The restraint was to ensure that the Rigid Raider would not be lost during enginemaintenance, where it was imperative for the derrick to be detached; this in turn couldthreaten the security of the Rigid Raider.

Cargo Aids responded immediately to HMS Portsmouth and designed, produced anddelivered the required restraint to the vessel at another location during sea trials; alldone within July 2007. This allowed the vessel to sail to the South Atlantic for anextended deployment with sufficient restraints to complete the mission.

The total number of lashings made for this requirement was 10, allowing for ultimatetesting and retention of a sample. Even though this was a small specialist requirement,Cargo Aids responded as they would to any request.

Extended Claw QRC

A further design requirement for airborne cargo restraint necessitated redesigning the jaws. Working closely with the commissioning authority, Cargo aids once again satisfied the needs quickly, efficiently and economically

Cargo Aids provides custom solutions in all areas of restraint. An example is the adaptation of our standard QRC to meet existing users expanded requirements.

Standard QRC

Modified Attachment QRC

Anti-Vibration QRC

This Quick Release Coupling is regularly used to secure embarked aviation as well as for various alternative and demanding applications, where secure load restraint is critical to mission success.

Adapting the standard QRC to operate in an area of extreme vibration was one application Cargo Aids were tasked to address.

The same requirement was requested but with a different attachment fitting, Cargo Aids worked closely with the customer to arrive at a satisfactory conclusion.

Cargo Aids have designed variations of QRC to suit

specific needs.

MC1 WebbingTie Down

CAB0001_ISS_04 02/09/09

A proven, lightweight, user friendly lashing, extensively deployed by the defence industry. The MC1 was initially designed to secure embarked helicopters to ships flight decks.

This nylon webbing tie-down has a fast single action over centre mechanism which gives tension and locking in one easy movement. It is impossible to over tension, and the slack can be taken up without reloading the mechanism. Release is a reverse single action.

Historically chosen by the MOD for its simplicity and outstanding robust quality, it has outlasted many othertensioning devices.

Approved by the Civil Aviation Authority and Ministry of Defence, the system is rigorously tested to the highstandards required by the defence and aircraft industry.

The nylon is treated to resist abrasion and the effects of sunlight. The mechanical components are treated with defence standard coatings to give maximum durability.

Easy to Load, quick to release; our MC1 also includes a unique clutch mechanism allowing the slack to be taken up without reloading.

We coat all metal surfaces with high technology defence standard treatments giving maximum endurance. The nylon webbing is specially treated to resist abrasion and UV damage.

Manufactured in our ISO 9001 and CAA approved factory; we select samples from each batch and test to destruction. We guarantee unmatched quality and proven reliability.

MC2Storm Lashing

Many of our products have been developed through requests by customers. When a device was required to tie down the EH101 Merlin Helicopter securely to the deck of a ship, Agusta Westland turned to Cargo Aids and the MC2 Storm Lashing was developed.

The polyester webbing tie-down has a fast single action, over centre mechanism that gives tension and locking in one movement.

Quick release is also achieved in one easy action. The MC2 Storm Lashing has a unique clutch that means that slack can be taken up without reloading the mechanism.

The webbing is treated to resist abrasion and the effects of sunlight. The mechanical components are of replaceable corrosion resistant steel selected to give maximum durability.

The unit incorporates a web tidy to ensure compact and safe stowage of excess webbing and its unique mechanism is a patented design. Recent modifications have removed any potential FOD hazards.

Having successfully undergone sea trials the MC2 Storm Lashing is now in use throughout the Royal Navy. The need for heavy and noisy chain-based restraints is no longer necessary.

The MC2 Storm Lashing is designed for loads of up to 10,000lb (4536 Kg) and is capable of an ultimate load of 15,000lb (6804 kg).

The MC2 Storm Lashing features a fast single action over centre mechanism that gives tension and locking in one easy movement.

CAB0001_ISS_04 02/09/09

We have supplied fast rope systems for use on Agusta Westland’s Super Lynx 300 and EH101 helicopters.

The fast roping system offers very high load ratings, providing excellent safety factors, reliability and versatility.

Used for rapid deployment and special operations, our fast rope system greatly accelerates the ability toinfiltrate from a helicopter, maximising the surprise element whilst improving safety.

When descent is required, ropes can be attached in one fast, easy operation. Our fast roping systemtypically features up to five ropes per helicopter.

Each rope can be released/loaded individually or simultaneously.

Should an emergency situation occur a number of rope release options are available: Manual release with a thumb lever Electrical release from a remote point Cable release of ropes via a jettison handle feature, which eliminates the requirement for cutting the ropes thus saving valuable time.

Quick and simple operation makes for a fast-functioning, safe system. Features include the keeperless release mechanism, which provides safe, repeatable loading and release capability.

Specifically designed for rapid descents from helicopters without the need for conventional harnesses orspecialised equipment.

Increasing the speed of airborne forces deployment and maximising the element of surprise in suchoperations.

The soft construction of the rope allows exact and comfortable control throughout descent. Recommended for use with our Fast Rope Gloves.

The optional aluminium termination fittingincorporates an at-a-glance safety check for fail safe inspection in the field.

Dynalite Termination (D.L.T)The new Dynalite Termination is a 12 strand construction rope manufactured from H.M.P.E. Dyneema and spliced through the end of the rope. It offers a very light weight option which can be attached to most hoists. In case of rapid deployment of troops it is also possible to detach the rope without the risk of injury to the personnel below or damage to the ship decks. The weight and construction of the termination enables repeat usage (a close visual inspection of the termination is recommended before each use) as it is unlikely that the termination will suffer on landing.

Spliced Eye (S.E)Ideally suited for training scenarios. The over sized eye can be easily hooked over support beams or scaffolding to mimic a helicopter descent.

Multifit Termination (M.F.T.) The new Multifit Termination (M.F.T) designed to fit to a wider range of helicopter cargo hooks. The M.F.T features a 45mm machined eye allowing fast attachment and removal.

Standard Conical Termination (S.C.T.)For use with a helicopter cargo hook. It is attached to the cargo hook using a bolt & split pin.
