The Vikings lived in northern and central Europe in between the 8th and 11th century. They were not only raiders and fighters as we can read in the history books. They were also seafarers, explorers and entrepreneurs of their time.

The history tells us that the Vikings may have been the first Europeans to ever touch North American soil – half a millennium before Christopher Columbus. It was under the lead of the explorer, Leif Eriksson that a band of sailors left their homeland around A.D. 1000, in the search of a new world.

After crossing the Atlantic, the Vikings encountered a rocky, barren land in present-day Canada where they spent a winter before returning home.

the History of the vikings

The Viking King, Håkon Håkonson, built several ships of this size. One of them he called Draken. This ship gained a great reputation as a very se-aworthy vessel. When the king sailed it to eastern Norway in 1226, it was known as one of the best sailors in the king’s fleet. It was a very beautiful ship and could sail away from all the other ships.

Draken Harald Håfagre was built using old methods and with the aim to use the same materials as the original Viking ships. The construction places great demands on the craftsmanship and just to find the right shape of the hull, the constructions team had to start by building three test boats.

In March 2010 the construction began on what turned out to be the largest Viking ship ever built in modern times. The construction contains a 18,5 meter long keel, 114 feet of crafted oak, 27 feet on the beam, displacing 70 tons and a 3200 square foot sail of pure silk.

The ship was launched in June 2012 and the first voyage was in 2014.

The 3200 square foot sail would be very difficult to handle if it would have be made out of wool or linen. Silk material is both strong and lighter.
