Medium VoltageCable Range

Page 2: Draka-MV-pg24.pdf

Over many years Draka has established a deserved

reputation in the UK as the most trusted and reliable

manufacturer in the Low Voltage cable sector. This

reputation was earned through our constant

commitment to our brand values.

We are capitalising on this vast experience and

expertise to extend the offering of the world’s most

trusted cable brand into the UK medium voltage

market, with products founded on the same core

principles – customer focus, safety, performance

and durability.

Draka UK is introducing a medium voltage cable

range to provide the UK’s leading contractors and

distributors with the highest quality cables for the

industrial and utilities sectors. Our cable exceeds

specification requirements to ensure a life

expectancy in excess of industry standards.

Whether it is utilised for power distribution;

(from wind farms and nuclear power stations

through to substations), or in the industrial sector

(in applications such as rail networks, airports

and major construction developments), our state-of-

the-art manufacturing techniques ensure the highest

calibre cables and deliver unrivalled longevity

and reliability.

Added to the numerous industrial projects currently

in progress throughout the UK, the energy network is

THE CABLE RANGE THATDELIVERS DURABILITYAND TRUST

also being constantly refurbished, upgraded and

maintained to cope with the increased electrical

consumption. This has in turn created an increased

demand for high quality medium voltage cables that

will stand the test of time. Draka has the technical

capability to meet this demand. Not only for the

excellence of our products but also for the technical

guidance and support that we offer.

For the utilities sector, the range includes 11, 22 and

33 kV rated versions with solid aluminium or

stranded copper cores, in both singles and triplex,

normally with polyethylene outer sheaths. In addition

to these variants, a stranded aluminium version is

available in singles. For the industrial sector, there

are 11, 22 and 33 kV versions with PVC or Zero

Halogen, Low Smoke (OHLS) sheathing with stranded

copper or stranded aluminium conductors dependent

on the application.

Draka’s medium voltage product range has been

developed with leading edge technology and is backed

by the resources of one of the world’s major specialist

cable companies. Draka Holding NV is an international

cable manufacturer with a turnover of 2 billion Euros

and 9,000 employees.

Draka as an organisation is passionate about

developing world leading products which deliver

exceptional value. Customer focus, quality and

innovation are at the heart of everything we do. Our

technical experts, research and development and

state-of-the-art manufacturing facility enables the

production of the highest quality cabling systems.

Potential RisksOne of the biggest threats to the effective

performance of medium voltage cables are defects in

the insulation system caused by gas voids or

impurities during the insulation of the cable. The

impact of these defects is magnified with increasing

voltage as the electrical stresses increase and can lead

to degradation of the insulation and in the end a

breakdown of the cable. Given the vast volume of

medium voltage cabling required in UK infrastructure,

and the number of people, businesses and services that

are totally reliant on a continued supply of power, any

failings requiring replacement can be severe and bring

major cost implications.

Built to lastThrough the sophistication of the manufacturing

techniques involved, Draka medium voltage cable

limits the exposure to impurities during the compound

handling process in production and as a result, it’s

durability is unrivalled.

The range is produced at the Nässjö factory in Sweden

which since Draka acquired the site from ABB in 1999,

has seen huge investment as part of a major

refurbishment and extension programme. It now has

the very latest plant and equipment which means it

can be classed amongst the world’s most advanced

Medium Voltage manufacturing factories. Already the

leading medium voltage supplier to the Scandinavian

utilities market, Draka has established a proven

pedigree in the development of high quality products

which are built to last. It is of course to ISO14001 and

ISO9001 certified.

1 Fundamental to the development of high quality,

trusted medium voltage cable at Draka’s facility in

Sweden has been the introduction of R3 technology

including clean rooms and closed systems for

materials handling – processes usually reserved for

high voltage cable manufacture. Here, the crucial

areas of the factory are contamination-controlled to

eradicate the risk of environmental pollutants such as

dust, airborne microbes, aerosol particles and

chemical vapours from jeopardising the purity of the

cable construction.

CLEANMANUFACTURIN

Drum take up

Page 7: Draka-MV-pg24.pdf

2 Not only does the closed system ensure that the

materials used are not contaminated, those specified

are all of the highest quality. The conductive cores are

formed from copper or aluminium in a comprehensive

range of cross sections.

Another major component is XLPE (cross-linked

polyethylene) – a thermosetting material which is able

to perform in temperatures of up to 90°C without

prematurely degrading. This contributes considerably

to the resilience of the product.

NG. THE SECRET BEHIND

220m in length with a

Curing Line

Page 8: Draka-MV-pg24.pdf

3 In 2007, Draka made a € 6 million investment

to refurbish and extend the Nässjö site. The

most significant development was the incorporation

of a new peroxide cure CCV-Line for the

insulation of our medium voltage cores. The line has

doubled the capacity of the factory to meet the

growing global demands for 10-36 kV medium

voltage cable.

4 Fed from an extruder platform, the CCV-Line is

220m long with a vertical drop of 20m. It features a

200mm diameter tube through which the cable is

cross linked at high temperature and high pressure.

5 Quality control extends across all aspects of the

manufacturing process and includes stringent testing

procedures including X-rays during production to

confirm the structural integrity of the cable. In

accordance with European and country specific

standards, Draka medium voltage cable is

continuously put through long-term water immersion

tests, followed by high voltage electrical breakdown

testing to ensure the cables will be fully reliable

throughout their expected operational life-span.

All of the above is to ensure that Draka produces the

highest quality medium voltage cables.
