William Nelson, Founder and CEO

Dragons Gung-Fu Club was founded in Richmond, Virginia in 1993 by William Nelson. Mr. Nelson began his training in the Martial Arts in 1983 as a Kwon of Q.U.I. Dragon, and continues his training today. In 1992, Mr. Nelson joined the United States Marine Corps where he served his country as a Martial Arts Combat Instructor, Honor / Burial Guard, various other capacities and an Associate’s Degree in a twelve year period before being honorably discharged. Mr. Nelson also won second place in Olympic Kumate’ Fighting in Okinawa, Japan 1995 and was given special recognition by the Grandmaster of The Yakuza Clan for his representation of the United States of America, Martial Arts Hall of Famer 2012, and obtained a Kuro Bushi Martial Arts Hall of Honors Silver Achievement Award 2014. He joined the Richmond Police force in 1997, where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. He has collaborated with other branches of law enforcement over his ten years on the police force. He has received training in such areas as Defensive Tactics, ATF Firearms Recovery and Street Enforcement Tactics, IRS Financial Investigative Techniques, Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) certified and National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) certified, through Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Maryland Crowd Management Workshop, and a VDEM -CERT 201: Train the Trainer.

Through his life experiences, Mr. Nelson began to see a need to instruct others on how to observe and determine a potential threat. In his classes he teaches not only hand to hand self defense but strategies to deter would be perpetrators.

Mr. Nelson offers both group and individual instruction.
