Brunetto and Boburka Earn All-American HonorsStudent Athletes Help Fight Hunger with “CANstruction”

Juniors Carly Fried (L) and Liz Flamman (R) pose with the two trophies awarded to the student athletes at the

conclusion of the CANstruction event.

On Saturday and Sunday, Mar. 5-6, the student-athletes from SUNY Oneonta participated in a “CANstruction” competition held in the Hunt College Union on campus. The competition utilized art, design and engineering skills to build giant-sized structures using only canned foods. When they were finished, the canned items were boxed and donated to the Lord’s Table for anti-hunger programs and food pantries.

Junior women’s tennis player, Liz Flamman, organized the student-athlete team. All 21 teams raised funds and took turns building the Red Dragon mascot, which came to be “Puff” the can dragon.

Flamman worked with campus architect, Scott Barton, on the details of the dragon, so they would know how many cans it would take to build the structure.

“Throughout this project I had an overall great experience,” said Flamman. “It was a pleasure working one-on-one with Mr. Barton on the architectural plans. It took many hours to finish but it was all worth it in the end. I was amazed at how much money the athletic department alone came up with in such little time.”

The athletes were able to raise $1600 to buy just over 2,000 cans to complete its Red Dragon. Every varsity team contributed to the building of the structure including, men’s and women’s tennis, swimming & diving, baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, field hockey, track and field/cross-country, wrestling, men’s and women’s soccer, and softball.

“Our student athletes contribute time, energy and money to more than 40 service projects in our community each year,” Athletics Director Tracey

Ranieri said. “Civic mindedness and service are woven into the fabric of both academic and extracurricular activities at Oneonta and we were proud to support this occasion to help our community neighbors.”

CANstruction Inc. is a nonprofit organization that holds annual design and build competitions. The late Cheri Melillo, a member of the Society of Design Administration, conceived and held the first event in New York City in 1992.

Last year, CANstruction Inc. donated more than 2 million pounds of food for food banks nationwide, providing an estimated 1.5 million meals.

Tom Rathbone, associate vice president of facilities services, and Miriam Murray, formerly of the SUNY Oneonta alumni affairs office, proposed the idea for a local CANstruction event to Linda Drake, director of SUNY Oneonta’s Center for Social Responsibility and Community, which sponsored the event.

Teams in CANstruction events raise money to purchase cans appropriate to the sculpture they plan to construct. Participants must use cans with original labels, and they cannot use glue or anything that will affect the cans during construction. Judges will select winners in the event in four categories: Best Use of Labels, Favorite, Best Meal and Structural Ingenuity.

The student-athlete team won the awards for Best use of Labels and Structural Ingenuity.

Four Teams Honored for Academics

Along with their accomplishments in the athletic arena, four teams were honored for its academic accomplishments this winter. The cross country, field hockey and wrestling teams were all honored by their respective Coaches Associations again for their continued achievement in the classroom. Along with being honored as teams, individuals from the field hockey and wrestling teams also earned honors.

Field HockeyThe field hockey team was one of 114 schools in Div. III to earn recognition as a National Academic Team Award recipient by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. The Red Dragons also had 13 individuals earn recognition as part of the 2010 NFHCA Division III National Academic Squad.

As a team, the Red Dragons went 12-8, and competed in the ECAC Div. III Mid-Atlantic tournament. The Red Dragons were eligible for the National Academic Team Award by compiling a combined team grade point average of greater than a 3.0.

The 13 players that earned selection to the National Academic Squad were seniors Leslie Dauphinais, Brianne Galli, Alyssa Herzog, and Ainsley Stoll, sophomores Megan Warning, Ashley Johnson and Suzanne Wright and freshmen Stephanie Fiske, Christine Gutchess, Kaylee Herzog, Jessica Hodes, Emily Moore and Samantha Smith. Both Dauphinais and Galli earned the honor for a fourth time.

Cross CountryThe men’s and women’s cross country teams were recognized by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as one of its All-Academic Teams for the 2010 season.

Both teams earned recognition for a fourth time as an All-Academic Team including a fourth straight year for the men. This is the third consecutive year for the women to go with 2006 when they attained the honor for the first time.

The men’s cross-country team was the only SUNYAC men’s program to earn the honor and was one of a record number 125 Div. III teams to be recognized. The men compiled an overall GPA of 3.11 this past fall semester.

The women were amongst 167 Div. III institutions to earn the honor.

The Oneonta women combined for an overall GPA of 3.48, which was the highest amongst the four women’s programs from the SUNYAC that were named to the list.

To be considered for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award, a team must have competed and compiled a score at its NCAA Regional meet. The team must also have a minimum 3.10 cumulative grade point average as a team.

WrestlingSenior wrestlers Brian Kramer and James Lamonica earned NWCA Scholar All-America honors for the first time during their careers as announced at the NCAA Div. III wrestling championships. The two become the 16th and 17th individuals to be honored for their academic accomplishments combined with their wrestling success during the season.

The Red Dragons were also recognized for the sixth time in the last eight years as a NWCA Scholar Team. They were 18th overall on the list of 24 that were honored with an overall team GPA of 3.305. The GPA ranking is based on the cumulative GPA of 10 season starters with a minimum of six that were a starter for the team at the NCAA qualifying tournament. A maximum of four substitutes may be used, but they must have wrestled as a varsity starter in at least 50 percent of the team’s scheduled competitions during the season.

To be eligible for the individual award, a student-athlete must carry a GPA better than 3.20 and meet one of following three criteria: qualifying for the NCAA Championships, placing in the NCAA qualifying tournament or winning more than 66 percent of his matches.

Kramer along with juniors Eric Simmons and David Broughton, were named to the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Academic Team. To be eligible for the ECWC Academic Team, the student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or have an average 3.3 GPA over the previous two semesters. The wrestler must also have competed in at least three official matches during the season and be eligible to compete at the ECWC championships.
