YOUR SCHOOL REPORT

From Dr. Roger L. Saurer, Superintendent

Our school board members are district citizens who demonstrate extraordinary dedication to both the Copley-Fairlawn City Schools as well as to the community. It is appropriate that appreciation and recognition be extended to them.

Too often the personal sacrifi ces which they routinely make as school board members are taken for granted or overlooked.

Too often the important role our school board members play in assuring local control over Copley-Fairlawn City Schools is overlooked. This important role is in the hands of people we know and trust—board members who live in the community and are neighbors and friends.

Too often it is forgotten that, in the tradition of representative democracy, school board members are the community’s connection to infl uencing how Copley-Fairlawn City Schools are governed.

Too often school board members are criticized without knowledge of all the details or factors that went into any given decision.

Too often the efforts of school board members go unrecognized and unrewarded.

In Ohio, January has been designated as School Board Recognition Month. This is a time to show our appreciation and to recognize how our school board members work together to provide leadership for our schools.

The school board works closely with parents, educational professionals, and other community members to create the educational vision needed for our students. It then formulates goals, defi nes results and sets the course for the excellent educational program that our students and parents have come to expect from the Copley-Fairlawn City Schools.

The school board is accountable to the public. It is responsible for assuring the public that the money allocated to the Copley-Fairlawn City Schools is providing a good return on their investment. Thus, the board oversees regular assessment of the district’s students, staff, and programs.

The school board is also a strong advocate for Copley-Fairlawn City Schools and is responsible for communicating the needs of the school district to the public as well as communicating the public’s expectations to the district.

Join with others throughout our district and across the state to salute the men and women who provide governance of public schools. Make a special effort to tell each school board member that his or her hard work has been noticed and is very much appreciated.

Mason L. Averill, a junior at Copley High School, scored a perfect score on the ACT and on the SAT. A perfect score on the ACT is 36 and on the SAT is 2400. Mason was recognized for his ac-

complishment on the ACT during the October 16th Board of Education Meeting.

On May 5, 2007, students in the Akron area took action in order to reach out a helping hand and stop the genocide that is ravaging Darfur. Elisa Leonard, a 2007 graduate of Copley High School, began this campaign with the idea of having a style show and a luncheon. She hoped to raise between two and three thousand dollars, which would be sent to the International Rescue Committee, earmarked for Darfur. Her entire committee consisted of fi ve girls from various schools in the area, including Mary Forchione, a 2007 Copley High School graduate and Molly Leonard, currently a junior at Copley. The committee designed invitations, met with caterers, put together the designers, organized the models, helped choose their clothing, ran the dress rehearsal, organized the seating, choreographed the music, and went to local businesses in order to put baskets together for a raffl e. In the end, the event raised over $5,600 for Darfur. The Association of Fundraising Professionals at the National Philanthropy Day Celebration held on November 16, 2007 honored Elisa, Mary and Molly. Copley High School principal, Mr. William Steffen, was in attendance.

As a culminating activity to an Economics Unit, students in Mrs. Sue Crouse’s 4th grade class at Arrowhead got to bid with their economic “money” at an auction. Throughout the 6-week unit, students earned “money” for appropriate behavior, work habits, and academic achievement. At the auction, they used the decision making process to help them as they bid on games, crafts, sports items, puzzles, and other fun items.

Prior to being voted the Capital One #1 Mascot, Zippy, the mascot for The University of Akron made a surprise visit to Fort Island Primary School. Educator of the Year Nominees

Educator of the YearMrs. Mary Jo Worthington, K-4 Art Teacher

This year, the PTA Council has bestowed the prestigious Educator of the Year honor on Mrs. Mary Jo Worthington, art teacher at Fort Island Primary School.

Mrs. Worthington earned a B.S. in Education (K-12) from Ashland University. Mrs. Worthington has taught at Rittman Schools, Art K-6 and for the last 20 years at Fort Island Primary School, Art K-4. She is a member of the Cuyahoga Art Center, Akron Art Museum and Ohio Art Education Association. Mrs. Worthington is a co-chairperson as Craft Coordinator for Camp Quality, which is a week long camp for children with childhood illnesses for the last ten years.

When asked about her educational philosophy, Mrs. Worthington said, “My goal is to always teach as she would like her “children” or “grandchildren” to be taught with kindness and patience. They are only children and they just need direction.” Mrs. Worthington resides with her husband Randall of 40 years. She has 2 children and 2 grandchildren. Congratulations, Mrs. Worthington!

We proudly recognize the nominees for the Educator of the Year award as announced by the Copley-Fairlawn City Schools PTA. Each individual was nominated by his/her respective building PTA as its outstanding educator nominee. The names of the nominees were submitted to the district-level PTA Council for consideration. From these names, the PTA Council selected the 2007-2008 Educator of the Year. This year, the building-level Educator of the Year awards were presented to the following: Mr. Jesse Smith, Arrowhead Primary School; Mrs. Mary Jo Worthington, Fort Island Primary School; Mrs. Susan Thorkelson, Herberich Primary School; Mrs. Windy Lewis, Copley-Fairlawn Middle School; and Mrs. Vicki Smith, Copley High School.

The Copley-Fairlawn Schools Foundation actively assists our school district in providing one of the best educational opportunities in the region. The Foundation is a 501(c)

(3) non-profi t organization operated separately from the school district by an independent volunteer Board of Trustees comprised of alumni and community leaders who are passionate about our children’s education.

The Foundation’s mission is to enhance the educational experience and opportunity of our community’s youth by funding college scholarships and educational classroom

projects. Since 1992, the Foundation has awarded 101 college scholarships to graduating seniors, totaling over $120,000, and has awarded 95 educational project grants to teachers, totaling over $35,000.

Funding provided by the Foundation would not be possible without the generous fi nancial support of individuals, families, groups and businesses. If you value

the excellent education and opportunity our schools provide to our children, please consider including the Foundation as part of your charitable giving and estate plan. Contributions are tax deductible and are deposited into the Foundation’s professionally managed investment fund. An annual gift of $500 or more entitles a contributor to name a scholarship. And for a one time gift of $10,000 or more, the Foundation creates an endowed scholarship, which generates income to fund annual scholarships well into the future.

For more information about the Foundation or how you may include the Foundation as part of your charitable giving or estate plan, please contact the Foundation President,

Denice Lentine, at (330) 664-4800.

As a result of an awarded Copley-Fairlawn School Foundation Educator Grant, students in the classes of Mrs. Diane Lucas, Mrs. Nikki Kocsis, Mrs. Gina Johnson, and Mrs. Diann Shields at Arrowhead Primary School enjoyed a fun-fi lled learning experience in October, 2007. There were over 20 parent volunteers helping to teach station activities, assist with lunch in the outdoor classroom, and monitor the students in group activities. Mr. Gary Novak, Principal,

prepared a delicious lunch of hot dogs and carrot sticks for the students. The students also snacked on some of the

treats they created throughout the day such as buckeye candies and chocolate coated popcorn. The students created many fall themed items from their work stations such as “leaf people”, pumpkin plants, buckeye necklaces, acrostic acorn poetry and twig picture frames.
