Electromagnetic Flowmeters

Around 1832 Michael Faraday proposed using theprinciple of electromagnetic induction for measur-ing flow velocity. His first experiments wereattempts to measure the velocity of the river Thames in England. Even though the experimentsresulted in failure, they are recognized as the first experiments in electromagnetic flow measure-ments.

From water and waste water through chemical, pharmaceutical and paper to

many applications in the food and beverage industry, whenever the flowrate of

conductive liquids, slurries or sludges is to be measured, the electromagnetic

flowmeters from ABB are in their element. They have been recognized for

many decades as being among the most successful in the market place.

A comprehensive range of product lines and models, meeting practically all

needs, cover just about every application.

Vortex and Swirl Flowmeters

The Vortex flowmeter FV4000 operation is basedon the Karman Vortex Street, in which the shed-ding frequency of vortices in a flow stream after anobstruction is measured. The shedding frequencyof the vortices is – over a wide Reynold’s numberrange – proportional to the flow rate.

When a flowing fluid meets an obstruction, pressure variations are created in

the fluid, which cause eddies to shed at the obstruction. This phenomenon is

utilized in the Vortex and Swirl flowmeters. The vortices are formed in the fluid at

a geometrically defined obstruction (Vortex and Swirl bodies) whose frequency

is measured by a sensor. The flowrate of liquids, gases and steam is determined

precisely and reliably from this frequency measurement.

Vortex flowmeters ensure a high process safetythrough their robust design (resistant to hammer-blows). They require low maintenance costs assediments hardly effect the meters. The waferflange version with its 65 mm installation lengthmakes the replacement of orifice very easy.

Fixed spiral vanes in the Swirl flowmeter‘s entrybody force the fluid into a rotation. The frequencyof the resulting secondary rotation is then measu-red. The frequency of the rotation is – over a wide Reynold’s number range – proportional to the flow rate.

Swirl flowmeters are very cost effective to installdue to the uniquely short straight sections. Virtually no straight pipe sections on the inlet oroutlet are required. Generally lengths of 3D at the inlet and 1D at the outlet are sufficient. Swirlflowmeters do not require a pipe reduction whereastraditional Vortex flowmeters need them for lowflow speeds in the pipe. This saves additionallyinstallation costs. The high accuracy helps toreduce process costs. Swirl flowmeters are suitablefor liquids with a viscosity greater up to 30 mPas,depending on pipe diameter.

11

Vortex and Swirl Flowmeters

Swirl Flowmeter

The high performance Vortex and Swirl flowmetersare extremely reliable due to their innovative DSP-Technology (Digital Signal Processing). The instruments are designed in 2-wire technology. With the internal RTD the possibility is given tocompensate temperature influences directly in thedevice. If a p/T-compensation is required, the signals are combined in the Flow Computer UnitFCU400 (SensyCal).

All calibration data and parameter values are storedin a removable FRAM, allowing the converter to beexchanged quickly and easily. The sensors arevibration compensated (pipeline vibrations up to1g are suppressed in the converter). The convertersincorporate a current output and fieldbus data linkas well as a user configurable contact output. Theyare available in explosion proof designs: EEx ib/ia,EEx d und EEx n [L]. Identical sensors and convert-ers are utilized for both measuring methods (vortexand swirl). This reduces stocking costs.

Mass Flowmeters

The system uses the ”Hot Film” anemometer princi-ple. This reliable technique is based on the fact thata flowing gas transfers heat from a heated object. This flow dependant heat loss is directly proportio-nal to the gas mass flow rate.

Collecting reliable flowrate information is a standard activity in a variety

of industries. In chemical processes or in filling applications direct

mass reading is required, as the mass flow is independent from any density,

temperature, viscosity, pressure or conductivity changes.

The Sensyflow series is suited for applications in allindustrial fields demanding quick and precise gasmeasurement, e.g. the chemical, environmental andprocess engineering industries, the food and bever-ages industries, or the automotive industry.

The flowmeters directly indicate the mass flow ornormalized volume flow of gases as the measuringsignal. The mass measurement principle workswithout any additional pressure and temperaturecompensation. The flowmeters have an impressivelyhigh accuracy, short response time and a very wideflow range with virtually no loss of accuracy evenat the lowest flow rates.

Sensyflow is designed for easy installation andhandling with an excellent resistance to contamina-tion effects. The high reproducibility of measuringresults ensures high operational reliability and highmeasuring accuracy.

Variable Area Flowmeters VA Master

The use of variable area flowmeters in industrial process measurement has

been established for more than 70 years. Their measuring principle is both

technically mature and cost-effective. They feature a range of design varieties

and high reproducibility and do not require an external power supply for

measured value indication on site.

VA Master is the appropriate solution for almost all applications involving the measurement ofliquids, gases or steam. The VA Master series starts with the ”SNAP-IN” Purgemeter that can be used to measure the low flowrates in bubblerapplications or for laboratory flow measurements. It continues with an extensive selection of glasstube flowmeters and finishes with metal tube flowmeters – available as simple indicators ormodels with intelligent two-wire transmitters withdisplay and HART communication.

Variable Area Flowmeters

Metal tube devices

The well-proven, robust metal tube flowmeters aresuitable for a wide range of applications. Theyhave proved their value for aggressive and opaquefluids or extremely demanding operating condi-tions. They are indispensable for applicationsrequiring high pressure and temperature resistance.

The VA Master FAM540 product line ranges from a pure indicator to a 4...20 mA device with switch-ing contacts and a graphical display allowing aconvenient menu-guided configuration. The modu-lar system allows the free combination of the suit-able indicator with various tube types available.

The FAM3200 offers the possibility to measure lowest flow rates of gases and liquids even underextreme pressure and temperature conditions. With the built-in needle valve the flow rate can be both adjusted and regulated. An attached differ-ential pressure regulator in combination with theneedle valve maintains the flow rate independentlyof any pressure variations.

Glass tube devices

These universal flowmeters are used in manyindustries for measuring and dosing liquids andgases. Due to the combination of various process-wetted materials they are suitable for even aggres-sive fluids.

The FAG1190 is a cost-effective and universalmeasuring instrument. The process-wetted compo-nents are available in various materials. Due to thewide range of different float types and measuringtubes, these devices can be adapted easily to theprevalent operating conditions.

The FAG6100 series is designed for measuring, dos-ing and monitoring small liquid or gas flows. Theyare best suited for use as bubbling instruments forlevel and density measurement and for flushing differential pressure lines in labs or in apparatusengineering.

1616

Differential Pressure Flowmeters

When a fluid flows through a restriction in thecross-section of a pipe, a pressure drop is created. This differential pressure is proportional to the fluidflowrate.

A wide range of differential pressure primary elements are available to suit most applications. These include Venturi tubes, DeepSeaMaster (subsea meter), Flow nozzles (including PTC-6):compact orifice meters, orifice plates and carrierassemblies, Sensybar averaging pitot tubes andwedge meters. The primaries are PED certified andfull certification and documentation is available.

A classical and proven method for measuring the flow rate of liquids, gases or

steam is to measure the differential pressure created in a fluid as it flows through

a reduction in the flow area. With a wide range of sizes and production materials,

this method is ideal for high static pressures (up to 400 bar and above) and high

fluid temperatures.

16

The efficient sensor for non-homo-geneous fluids – WedgeMaster
