Lindisfarne - HistorySt Aidan and his monks came from the Irish monastery of Iona and established a community on Lindisfarne in 635CE. They were invited by King Oswald (based at nearby Bamburgh) and worked as missionaries among the pagan English of Northumbria. In their monastery the monks set up the first known school in this area and introduced the arts of reading and writing. At that time all educated people used the Latin language and the Bible and other Christian books were all in Latin. The monks trained boys as practical missionaries who later went out over much of England to spread the Gospel.St. Aidan also encouraged women to become nuns and girls to receive education (but notin this monastery.) In time Lindisfarne became known for its skill in Christian art of which the Lindisfarne Gospels are the most beautiful surviving example. The period of the first monastery is referred to as the "Golden Age" of Lindisfarne. In 793 the Vikings invaded. It is likely that they knew of Lindisfarne’s wealth, the size of the community there and the nature of that community - monasteries were popular targets as they were seldom well defended and they often possessed items of great value – not only beautiful books like the Lindisfarne Gospels – but cups and dishes for Holy Communion, crosses and candle-sticks which might be made of precious metal and decorated with jewels.

Lindisfarne today

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is only connected to the mainland at low tide. Pilgrims follow a line of posts which mark the safe pathway.

The Northern Cross PilgrimageEvery year since 1976 there has been a 100-mile pilgrimage through Northumberland to mark Holy Week. Around 100 pilgrims, mostly Christians from a wide range of denominations make the 10-day journey on foot through some of the most beautiful countryside in Britain. Camping in churches on the way, we arrive on Holy Island on Easter Sunday. Some people carry large wooden crosses and these are decorated with flowers on Easter Day. It is a very joyful, inspiring and memorable experience

Walsingham

Legend has it that in 1061 a Saxon noblewoman in Walsingham had a vision of the Virgin Mary who told her to build a replica of the house where she and Joseph brought up Jesus. The village became known as England's Nazareth, and people still go on pilgrimage to this house today.

Iona

Just across from Mull, lies the Isle of Iona. For centuries pilgrims have traveled to this small island off the West coast of Scotland, leaving behind their chaotic lives to rest, reflect and walk in the footsteps of St. Columba, the Irish missionary who founded a monastery on Iona in 563 AD. The Celtic Church was the first Church in the British Isles and Iona is one of the most ancient places of pilgrimage in Europe.

It is said that on the Isle of Iona, the veil between earth and heaven is so thin that pilgrims here can easily access spiritual dimensions.

Iona

• A pilgrim to Iona comments that -• “Peace and tranquillity can be found everywhere in Iona, the

organic gardens, nature, the ancient stones and monuments...• In the memories of those who have gone before...• In the community that has grown up here...• New beginnings and possibilities open up after a visit here. The

road is full of pilgrims, laughing and crying, sharing their stories, seeking the God who surprises us all.”

Roger Schutz (1915 – 2005)

A monk who started a community in a village in the South of France.

This group was an ecumenical movement to show that although there are some major differences between groups

they still have the same essential beliefs.

The name of the group is called Taizé .

He built this at the end of the second world war in an attempt to promote reconciliation and breakdown barriers

between denominations.

He offered hospitality to refugees, in particular the Jews who were escaping Nazi Germany.

There are more than 100 members now, mainly Protestants, the community now works to improve relationships between Protestants and Catholics.

Over 100,000 young Christians go on pilgrimage every year to Taizé for Bible study and communal work.

They meet each other to pray, worship, sing, read the Bible, contemplate and meet other people.

JerusalemTHE MOUNT OF OLIVESThe most famous entrance into Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives represented Jesus’ Triumphal Entry when He rode a donkey in Jerusalem and presented Himself as Messiah in fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9.The Mount of Olives also marks the place where Jesus gave a sermon about the end times (Matthew 24:3).The Mount of Olives represented the place where Jesus ascended to heaven. The event that will represent history’s most memorable event on the Mount of Olives will be Jesus’ Second Coming, as predicted in Zechariah 14:1-21 and Acts 1:9-12.

Church of the Holy SepulchreThis is said to be the site of Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection. The church has long been a major pilgrimage centre for Christians all around the world. According to the New Testament, Jesus was crucified at Golgotha, “the place of the skull” (Matt. 27:33–35; Mark 15:22–25; John 19:17–24). This has been identified as an area of abandoned stone quarries just outside the city wall of the time.
