Currently I am sad to say we are unable to run our June Community Market. Fingers crossed that August will allow our Market to open again. Let’s hope we will return to normal/new normal soon. Netball/basketball courts: The netball /basketball courts at Anderson Park are nearing completion. Just a few lines to be painted and they are ready for games to begin. Your VBCA would like to invite you all to the opening when gatherings are permitted. Maybe we could have a friendly game or 2 to test out the courts. Mel’s Chair: VBCA is working with Council to replace the very dilapidated seat at the end of the Robert Lowden Park walkway. Those of you who knew Mel Best would have seen the beautiful sunrises Mel would photograph from that spot every day. It has been agreed that we replace that seat in memory of Mel and hope many more sunsets and sunrises can be enjoyed from that spot. Mural for Valla Beach: At our last General Meeting in March and before the lockdown, there was a discussion about painting the water tower with a Mural. If you know of an artist who may be interested in painting our very green tower, contact Tracey on 6569 5410 or email [email protected] The hope is that we will have a few ideas to showcase for everyone to vote on when the Markets re-open. Ocean View Drive Survey: People who live and use Ocean View Drive as their main road for travel to and from home will be asked to answer a survey on how to reduce speeding along this road. When you receive this survey please give it some thought and let us know what you feel would be the best answer. Council have already placed a 50kph sign at the exit of the Caravan Park. Looking for something to do? We have many things that we do for the community and you could help also: - If you like gardening you could help with dune care, or tidy garden verges/gardens or bush regeneration; - If you like walking there is the bi-monthly delivery of the Valla Views and other small drops of community information; - If you like to paint, we have outdoor facilities that need a lick; - You could help save the Koala habitat; - Carols in the Park in December; they will not go ahead if we don’t have someone to put their hand up soon; - When the markets are back and running again you could join in the fun and help. If you want to help grow our community and work to make Valla Beach an even better place to live, you could join our committee. This really does not take up much of your time and it is very rewarding. Interested? Call Tracey 6569 5410 or email [email protected] Our next Meeting is our AGM followed by a General Meeting on 20 July 2020 7pm at the Community Hall commencing at 7pm at the Valla Beach Community Hall; do come along - all are welcome. Things are still happening at Valla Beach ... Markets: We are definitely living in different times. Currently I am sad to say we are unable to run our June Community Market. Fingers crossed that August will allow our Market to open again. Let’s hope we will return to normal/new normal soon.

Valla Beach RFS

A draft Neighbourhood Safer Place for Valla Beach is still in the planning phase - more news on this in a later edition. If any residents are going to do ‘a burn off’ they

need to inform their neighbours at least 24hrs in advance and also contact the NSW RFS hotline (02 6626 6860) and

advise at least 24 hours in advance. This just stops RFS crews being responded unnecessarily. The township of Valla

Beach from the eastern side of the railway tracks is ‘a no burn’ area. There is to be no burning without a permit from Nambucca Valley Council. In the western side of the tracks and into Valla Rural the above burn off rules apply. We are still undergoing community consultation about the proposed

burn off around Valla Beach. This is a ‘watch this space’ thing at the moment.

Valla Beach Tavern Social Golf Club: Well folks, we are up to another VV publication and we still have not yet been able to hit a ball in competition. With the ongoing restrictions in almost all avenues of career, sport and recreation, the committee has decided to hold off on competition until we have a more definite idea on restrictions. It is next to impossible to play with the one person per cart rule applicable and no social gatherings available to lunch and have a few ales afterwards. So with regret, we have to wait until restrictions are eased to accommodate a more favourable outcome. Keep tuned to your phones or the Tavern’s facebook page for future updates. Bob Battaglini

2NVR 105.9fm & streaming, Nambucca Valley Radio

The radio volunteers continue to deliver local programming to the airwaves during the Covid 19 restrictions. The crew have become very innovative with restricted numbers at the studios, strict cleaning regimes and some

Presenters broadcasting from home or prerecording shows; like they say, the show must go on. On air and on the 2NVR facebook page, we endeavour to keep the community informed of the ever evolving world that we live in. We have an emergency committee which helps to disseminate information, whether it is related to Covid 19, fire, flood etc. ‘Studio 3 Live’ is taking a break during lockdown but 2NVR loves to promote local musicians and in a special new show called ‘Loungeroom Concerts’ Saturdays 6-9pm, local artists perform from their loungeroom. It’s broadcast live on 2NVR with a facebook Watch Party; this helps to promote our artists and provides entertainment to our listeners. Check out www.2nvr.org.au to learn more about your community radio, download the program and find your favourite show. We have more than 40 volunteer Presenters including some new recruits providing a great variety of entertainment covering all music genre including brand new Australian music, Talk Shows, News items, Book Show, Science Fiction, History, Sport, German Show, youth Music and more.

Belated Mother’s Day wishes ..

To all our wonderful mothers, we hope you all enjoyed your “Special” day on 10 May.. Mother's Day is a celebration honouring the mother of

the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is

celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March or May. Let’s hope Mother’s Day 2021 will be more

encompassing for all families.

Chocolate is the best investment. You buy 100 g – you gain 2 kg!

Of course I should clean my windows. But privacy is important too.

Man to his wife: 'I’d never say you’re fat! You’re just a bit more visible’.

Note from Nambucca Valley Council’s General Manager, Michael Coulter:

Our Shire Libraries will be reopening from Monday 1 June. Council will have to get contact details for all people entering the libraries for its records. The Council Chambers has now reverted to normal opening hours ie 8.30am to 4.00pm. Council is still not allowed to have the public attend Council meetings as it becomes a public gathering (indoors) with more than 10 people. But I think this is likely to change in the near future. Council elections have been postponed until Sept 2021. Plenty of

time for interested residents from Valla Beach to think about nominating. It would be good to have a Councillor

from the village of Valla Beach.

Georgette Allen (NVCA) advises that Valla Beach RFS and NPWS will be carrying our fuel reduction fires in Jagun and Valla Nature Reserves (9 ha in each location) at a date to be set soon – possibly next 2 weeks. For info, contact Simon, NPWS Liaison ph 0429 157 085 or type in https://www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/fire-information/hazard-reductions

Anzac Day 2020

What a different type of Anzac Day we celebrated this year. The following is an article from Ron Patterson who lives in the Valla Beach Tourist Park: “Being a retired musician, I was able to place one of my large speakers on my carport roof and the other in the driveway so the residents could hear what was being played and remembered. First played was an Anzac song called "100 years the Anzac" by McAlister Kemp; second played was a hymn called "Our God, Our Help In Ages Past"; third played was "The Ode"; Fourth played "The Last Post" with a minute silence following; Fifth played was "Rouse"; Sixth played was "The Australian National Anthem"; Finished off with "I Still Call Australia Home" by Peter Allen. It was all very personal and moving. A lot of people commented on how much they enjoyed it all in these unusual and hard times. It was heard by the residents of the Tourist

Park Village in Wattle Grove Terrace and I was also contacted by residents from Ocean View Drive, outside the village, on how beautiful it all sounded. I felt very privileged to be able to put together such a very special event”. Ron Patterson Above is a photo which our neighbour took from my home in Valla Beach Tourist Park Village of myself, and my wife, Kerri and Millie (dog) for Anzac Day 2020 at 11am.

Lest we forget ...

Message from the Mayor

“Nambucca Valley Council is committed to doing everything in its power to reduce the spread of the Coronavirus in our community. Council continues to provide essential services to the best of its ability as we navigate through this challenge. Our administration offices have reopened with social distancing arrangements in place and other Council facilities will reopen as NSW Public Health Orders permit. Please visit www.nambucca.nsw.gov.au or call Council’s Administration Centre on 6568 2555 for details. Other than the 3 COVID-19 cases recorded early on, there have been no further cases recorded in the Nambucca Valley for the past 4-5 weeks suggesting that the risk of community transmission is currently low. However it is acknowledged that community transmission may increase and the matter should be kept under review. It is important that as residents, we all remain vigilant and adhere to the advice provided by health experts. I encourage everyone to consider downloading the COVID Safe app if they have a mobile device. It will speed up the containment of the virus, help ease some of the restrictions currently in place and allow our economy to return to something which is closer to normal. For more information and to download the app, go to: https://www.health.gov.au/resources/apps-and-tools/covidsafe-app I cannot emphasise enough the importance of maintaining social distancing, practising good hand and sneeze/cough hygiene and hand washing. If you are sick, please stay away from others and get tested. These simple, common sense actions will help reduce risk to you and to others. NSW Health is the lead agency in trying to contain the pandemic virus. Please go to: www.health.nsw.gov.au and its Facebook page “NSW Health” for the latest up to date information. Our community has suffered drought, fires, flood and now this virus and the social and economic impacts have been devastating right across our Valley. If you are struggling don’t be afraid to ask for help. Above all, remember that we still live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. It may take time, but things will get better. Valla Beach Tennis Club: Hello to all Valla Views readers - thankfully, with restrictions easing over the past couple of weeks, we have been able to resume our social tennis group (with a maximum of 10 players) at any one time - one-on-one play and family groups have still been able to play for some time now. We have a great little facility here at Valla Beach and we would like to encourage you to come along and have a go at this great activity. For court hire, please call Carole on 0413 611 531. And who would’ve thunk it?! The Nambucca Valley Physical Culture Club have been making use of one of our courts for their group - due to not being able to go indoors, they had been exercising and practising their skills online but are now making use of a court. What forward thinking! Over the last 6 weeks, we have been one of the only sporting activities available in Valla Beach. To enable more people to make use of our facility, we have greatly reduced the cost of hire. Give tennis a go! Our Club members were also saddened to hear about the recent passing of Bill Stewart - he was a keen tennis player over many years, a stalwart volunteer for our Club and a great mate to many of our members. Our thoughts are with Judy and her family and friends at this time.

Valla Community Preschool

Our preschool still has vacancies for 3-4 year old Thursday/Friday class. Preschool for 3-5 year olds; open

Valla Lions We are slowly and carefully getting back into action. If you would like to join us we meet 2nd Thursday night of each month at the Billy’s shed in the Valla Reserve Ocean View Drive at 6.30pm. Come along and find out what Lions International is all about. Our five key interests are Hunger, Children Cancer, Environment, Diabetes and Sight. It is with deepest sadness the we lost our last charter (foundation) member Lion Bill Stewart in early May. Bill lived his entire life in Valla and Valla Beach, only moving to Queensland in March this year to be closer to their family. He will be deeply missed by all the community of Valla Beach and the Valla Lions.

Valla Rural Fire Brigade has remained active, though restrained somewhat in recent times by the COVID-19 restrictions. After an horrendous spring/summer bushfire season, welcome rain has seen a significant dip in fire activity - although the brigade has attended a number of incidents near the Nambucca Heads highway interchange, as well as callouts to pile burns. With face-to-face gatherings limited, the brigade held its May training meeting via a google hangout video call - a first for our unit. The social distancing restrictions have also led to the

brigade's AGM being postponed to later in the year. Planning for substantial extensions to the Valla Brigade Station are well advanced and are necessary to accommodate the pending arrival of a new Category 1 tanker. Once buildings are complete, this will give the brigade a dedicated meeting/training room which will be greatly welcomed. Chris Knight, Training Officer, Valla

Valla brigade members Frank Nunnari and Abbey and

Lachlan Pade share a joke at a training meeting.

Valla Voices have taken a break due to Covid-19 and we are very excited about returning to rehearsals ASAP, hopefully in Term 3, if not before. The choir was due to host the ‘Crescendo Choir’ from Tasmania this May and we were naturally disappointed to have to cancel this exciting exchange. We

were also excited to host Austrian conductor Valentin Zwitter which has also been cancelled due to Covid-19. Nevertheless, we aim to get back to business as usual very soon and will do our best to forge ahead with preparations for our European Tour. Thank you to all our parents and the greater community during this uncertain time.

Must be time for another giggle ...

My car horn now sounds like gunshots. People move out of the way much faster recently.

Do I lose when the police officer says ‘papers’ and I say ‘scissors’?

“Why do you look so sad? - “I wanted to drown my worries but my wife didn’t want to go in the water.” Oh dear ...

Messages from some of our wonderful advertisers: Margie from Valla Real Estate: We as a business are classed as an essential service, so remained open during this COVID – 19 situation. Constant disinfectant and hand washing has been in place during this time as per Government guidelines. With talks of restrictions easing in the near future, it’s important for all of us in business to plan and make the appropriate arrangements to ensure that we can provide services to the public, in a COVID-19 safe manner. Safe Work Australia’s website provides great guidance material as well as links to the relevant work health and safety information.

Richard from Bowraville Pest Control: I have been very lucky; my business is as busy as ever and obviously I have been able to get out and about in accordance with the virus precautions for my clients, family and myself. Stay safe.

Penny from Valley Clean: Business is going well for us. We dropped a number of clients early on including a number of airbnb’s in Valla and a few others however we have maintained enough work to continue cleaning throughout and keep staff on reduced hours. Hopefully it will start to pick up again.

Lou from Soma Pilates: Studio Soma - Pilates is open and offering a lockdown special for equipment based Private Pilates sessions. Please call 6508 5375 or 0412 071 099 to enquire. Group classes will resume at the Valla Beach Community Hall in June. TUES 8AM & THURS 5PM Hope to see you there!

Alex from Nambucca Valley Landscape Supplies: Here at NVLS we are trading our normal hours, seven days per week. We are in the fortunate position where home makers are taking the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful autumn weather and enhance their gardens.

Kerri’s Zumba Classes: During the social distancing and limited group restrictions period, please ring Kerri for class location details - keep safe everyone. Kerri is powering along with an online Zoom class Tuesdays and Fridays. Kerri is also holding groups of 10 people at Anderson Park each Monday commencing Mon 25 May at 10am. Please contact Kerri if you wish to join the group. Email [email protected] or mobile Kerri 0427 027 014.

Brett and Gloria from Hibiscus Property Maintenance: We are still up and running thanks to our local community, regular customers and real estate agents in the valley who support us. Hoping you and your families are well and please stay safe.

Sarah from Tree-O Gallery: It’s Tree-O Gallery’s first birthday on 1st June and we have dusted everything off after being closed the last few weeks. As of the date of publication of this newsletter, we are excitedly cautious that we can open the doors to visitors again. We have missed having people through and look forward to welcoming you all again very soon. All precautions and up-to-date restriction measures are in place so we can continue to stay safe. Our work-shop has remained open however and we have been busy; we fulfilled an order from National Parks for picnic tables and toilet blocks (to replace some of those lost in the bush fires), completed and delivered various commissioned pieces to happy clients and numerous timber sales and services. The current exhibition featuring Nick Warfield and Freedom Summers will likely continue until the end of August so do drop in and browse the wide range of exquisite, hand-crafted furniture, décor, sculptural marvels, artworks, gift ideas and other home wares. We would like to take this opportunity to extend a big thank you to all the supporting personnel throughout our beautiful region. Hope to see you soon.

For phone numbers and more details about our advertisers, please check our back page.

The Vallarinas:

The Vallarinas are missing our concerts for all our aged care friends and staff - we hope they are keeping safe as we are. We are busy refreshing our costumes and routines for when we can return in the future. All members of The Vallarinas would like to send a “Big Thank You” to all the front line workers doing such an amazing job. We thank you!

Missing fishermen

Two local fishermen, Tim March (aka ‘Tim the Bream’) and Jarrath Hillyer have been missing since Sun 29 Dec 2019.

Unfortunately, their families are still waiting on the Coroner’s final ruling and will then try to organise a memorial for Tim and

Jarrath. We will try to keep you all posted.

Our Nambucca State Forest is currently being logged. Coordinated actions, asking that our Nambucca Forest be declared a National Park are being undertaken by many different groups. For info, check Nambucca Valley Conservation Association [email protected] or call Georgette Allen on 0404 428 254.

National Park: All up and down the NSW Coast, we have National Parks, until you reach Nambucca Valley. Then the Nambucca Valley and Coffs Harbour just have State Forests on our coastal fringes. So sad, after all the fires, that our remaining forest is being trashed, putting even more pressure on the animals that have survived the drought, then the fires. The plan to make our State Forest a NP obviously incorporates plans for re-allocation of jobs for forestry workers into allied positions, as this is an important element in the issue around ceasing harvesting of native forests, in favour of plantation forestry, from which we already draw some 83% of our timber. Contact Georgette Allen on 0404 428 254 for more information.

Dates: Queen’s birthday long weekend - public holiday Mon 8 June (Queen’s actual birthday 21 April)

NAIDOC week was set down for 5-12 July - search their website for local celebration dates.
