1.- In 1875, Jonathan Harker received a letter from Count Dracula.

Dracula.

They stopped talking and looked at Harker in fear and surprise.

They were very long and sharp and they were white.

4.-In the morning, Jonathan was shaving in front of his small mirror

behind him?

The fire in his eyes disappeared.

Dracula?

Because wherever he went, he found locked doors, some windows

were open, but they were some meters above the ground.

1.- Jonathan fell asleep in an unlocked room. When he woke up, the

air was full of golden dust.

The shapes of three young women.

(b) What did Dracula do when he came into the room?

One of the women was going to kiss Jonathan but Dracula shouted

and pulled the woman away from him.

3.- On 29th June, Dracula spoke to Jonathan.

perhaps he and Jonathan will meet again.

To follow Dracula to his room.

He saw Dracula come out of his window and go down the wall .

4 .- Jonathan found a way into an old chapel.

Count Dracula.

(c) What did he look like?

His hair was now dark grey, his face was fat and red.

5 Jonathan heard some men coming. He left the chapel quickly.

They were hammering down the lids of the boxes.

(b) Where was Dracula going?

To England.

6 What did Jonathan do?

He put some gold coins in his pockets and climbed out of the window

of the Count’s room.

1.- Mina received letters from Jonathan. Why was she very worried?

The letters were short and strange, she thoughtJonathan was ill.

2.- Mina went to stay with her friend Lucy West.

(a) Where did Lucy live?

In Hythe.

(b) What did they do every day?

They went out walking.

(c) Where did Lucy like going to most of all?

To the old church on the hill.

3.- There was a storm on the night of 8th August. Lucy’s servant said

that a ship had been wrecked.

(a) Where had the ship come from?

From Varna.

(b)What did the servant say was strange about the ship?

He said there was no one on it, living or dead.

(c) What happened as soon as the ship touched the shore?

A dog jumped down and ran away up the hill.

4.- The ship was full of big, wooden boxes. What was in the box that

broke open?

Earth.

5.- That night, Mina woke up. Lucy was not in the bedroom.

(a)Where did Mina find Lucy?

In the churchyard.

(b)What did Mina notice on Lucy’s throat as she put her to bed?

Two red marks.

6.- After that night, Lucy became paler and paler.

(a) Why did Mina want to send a telegram to Arthur?

Because she knew Lucy was ill.

(b) Why would Lucy not let her?

She said that she did not want to worry Arthur. She said he was doing

important work in Professor Van Helsing’s hospital.

(c)Why did Mina lock the bedroom door?

To keep her friend safe

7.- One night, Mina found Lucy leaning out of the bedroom window

(a) What was sitting beside Lucy?

A black bird.

(b) What did Mina notice about the marks on Lucy’s throat?

They looked very red and

painful.

8.- Why did Mina have to leave at once?

She received a letter from a hospital in Budapest. It said that

Jonathan had been very ill and he was asking for her.

9.- Mina asked Jonathan about Castle Dracula. What did Jonathan

reply?

He said, ‘I cannot talk about Castle Dracula now.

Terrible things happened there.’ He said he didn’t know whether he

had been ill or mad.

10.- Who did Jonathan see on their first evening in London?

Count Dracula.

11.- A telegram was waiting for Mina when she got home.

(b) Why was Jonathan surprised?

Because he had seen the golden dust at Castle Dracula and he had

seen Dracula’s eyes shining like red fire.

2.-Why did Lucy need a blood transfusion?

Because she had lost a lot of blood.

3.-What questions did Jonathan ask about Lucy’s throat?

He asked whether there were any small, red marks on Lucy’s throat.

4.- What plants did Professor Van Helsing bring into Lucy’s bedroom?

Garlic plants.

He pulled Arthur away.

6.- When Arthur finished telling them about Lucy’s death, Mina and

Jonathan’s eyes were full of fear. What were they afraid of?

They were afraid that Dracula had been drinking Lucy’s blood, they

were afraid she was a vampire.

They had disappeared from their homes.

They had hammered a stake through Lucy’s heart and they had cut

off her head, now she was dead.

They must destroy Count Dracula.

Because Jonathan could not remember where Dracula’s house was.

(b) Was he successful?

No.

2.- Why did Van Helsing hypnotize Jonathan?

He said that if he hypnotised him, Jonathan mightremember where

Dracula’s house was.

3.- What did the three friends put in the boxes in Dracula’s house?

Holy bread

4.- Back at Jonathan’s house, they found Mina in terrible danger. What

was Dracula making her do?

He was making Mina drink his blood.

Van Helsing

(a) How could Van Helsing find out from Mina what Dracula’s plans

were?

He could hypnotise her and ask her about Dracula’s plans.

That Dracula was on a ship, was leaving England.

6 What would happen to Mina if she died before Dracula was

destroyed?

She would be a vampire forever.

81.- ‘You will be in great danger if you come with us,’ Van Helsing

told Mina.

(a) Why would she be in great danger?

Because if she was near Dracula and he called her to him, she would

have to go.

(b) How could Mina help the three friends?

Van Helsing could hypnotise her and she could tell them where was

Dracula.

(c) What did Mina make Jonathan and the two others promise to do?

To kill her if Dracula’s power over her became too strong.

2.-Why did Van Helsing hypnotize Mina early in the morning and in

the evening?

Dracula’s power was not as strong then.

91.- ‘Mina and I will go by land to Castle Dracula,’ said Van Helsing.

What did Van Helsing plan to do when he got to Castle Dracula?

He planned to put holy bread in Dracula’s tomb.

2.- The Professor was afraid. What was happening to Mina on the

journey to Castle Dracula?

She was becoming more and more like a vampire.

3.- Mina and Van Helsing were safe inside the circle.

No.

(b) What was keeping them safe?

The holy bread.

4.- Why could Dracula not get back inside his tomb?

Because the Professor had put holy bread inside it.

5.- Why did Jonathan and Arthur have to destroy Dracula before it

became dark?

Because when it was dark he could leave his box and move around,

then he would have the power to destroy them.

6.- How was Dracula finally destroyed?

Jonathan pushed the wooden box off the cart, it broke open on the

ground. Jonathan hammered a stake through Dracula’s heart and

Arthur cut off his head, then Dracula’s body became a heap of dust.
