Dr. Showket is extensively working in India on Human Papillomavirus (HPV) research. His major areas of
research interest at present are transcriptional regulation of viral oncogene expression, cancer drug
discovery, micro RNA research, cancer signaling pathways epigenetics and immunotherapeutic. He has
several National and International grants on common cancers prevalent in India. He has also received
serval awards and is lead editor and reviewer of several International journals. Dr. Showket is mentoring
PhD, post-doctoral, MD and MS students and offers internships to young and curious minds (graduate &
post graduate students) so that they can learn the basics of research and are motivated to take it up further
as their careers.
Major scientific Achievements
Impact and Perception of Human Papillomavirus infection, Cervical Cancer and HPV
Vaccination in North Indian Population. The study demonstrated the level of awareness
and education among college students and their parents; and how these impacts vaccination
program in India. (PLoS One. 2014) (IF: 3).
Plausible role of Notch signalling pathway along with synergistic effect of HPV in
regulating/ development and proliferation of cervical cancer through the deregulation of
Notch Proteins and its ligand Jagged- 1. The study shows correlation between JAG1 and
Dr. Showket Hussain, Scientist- D at ICMR- National Institute of Cancer Prevention
and Research (ICMR-NICPR) and has made outstanding contributions in the field of
Cancer Research, Tumor Virology and cancer molecular epidemiology. He has done
his doctorate from ICMR based laboratory ICMR-NICPR (Formerly ICPO) and post
doctorate from prestigious cancer institute MD Anderson Cancer Centre Houston Texas,
U.S.A. During the last 5 years of his research career he has published more than 70 research papers including
book chapters in reputed international journals and distinguished himself as a renowned molecular oncologist.
HPV in cervical cancer. In addition to that the study also shows the clinical utility of
NOTCH proteins which may be used as predictable biomarkers in diagnosing different
histological sub-types of HPV associated cervical cancer. (PLoS One. 2014) (IF: 3),
(Nature Publications: Scientific Reports 2018), (IF: 4).
We developed a cost effective DNA based vaccine construct of immunogenic potential
against HPV-16 specific variant (Nature Publications: Scientific Reports 2015). (IF: 4).
We showed two significant variants H78Y and L83V are affecting the two important amino
acid stretches of E6 protien (16-60 and 76-94) which can be targeted to control cervical
cancer in future for the development of HPV-16 vaccine. (Journal of Virological
Methods. 2015)
Discovered novel MicroRNAs (miRNAs) signatures in HPV-mediated cervical
carcinogenesis in Indian women (Tumour Biol. 2015). (IF: 4).
Showed for the first time the incidence of HPV infection in prostate cancer in Indian
population and strengthens the hypothesis that HPV infection could be one of the co- factor
associated with progression of prostate cancer [Nature Publications: Scientific Reports
2015]. (IF: 4).
Highlighted the role of personalized physical activity in improving the quality of life for
breast cancer patients (Frontiers in Oncology, 2017). (IF: 4).
Highlighted the importance of global overview of mutational profiles in predisposition to
gall bladder and the research gaps, future prospects for better management of GBC
(Mutation Research Reviews, 2018) (IF: 5).
Demonstrated for the first time role of tumor suppressor PML expression in different
pathological grades of cervical cancer and its synergism between HPV infection. In
addition, differential expression pattern of PML in cervical precancer (CINI) as compared
to CINII and CINIII precancerous lesions was observed indicating its potential early
biomarker for cervical carcinogenesis (Gynecol Oncol. Dec 2013).
Contributed in establishing ICPO-ICMR as a WHO referral Center for HPV serology for
whole South-East Asia.
Showed how gene environment interactions influence (Molecular Carcinogenesis,
50(7):487-98, 2011) and Methylation-mediated gene silencing of suppressor of cytokine
signaling-1 (SOCS-1) gene in the development of esophageal cancer in Kashmir Valley.
Journal of Receptors & Signal Transduction Research. 2011 Apr;31(2):147-56.
Demonstrated the genetic and epigenetic modifications of KRAS gene mutation,
RASSF1A, FHIT and MGMT genes methylation could be used as diagnostic adjunct for
colorectal tumorigenesis and may help in improving the overall approach towards this
disease (PLoS One. 2013).
Developed a Non Invasive method using urine samples for detection of human
papillomaviruses (HPVs). Journal of Medical Virology. 2012 Feb;84(2):298-305.
Showed for the first time dysregulation of AP-1 activity and differential expression of AP-
1 family of proteins in relation to HPV infection and consumption of sodium-bicarbonate-
brewed hot salted tea which is very widely consumed by majority of people in snow-capped
Kashmir Valley. Overall the study demonstrates a pivotal role of AP-1 in esophageal
carcinogenesis and may have direct bearing on the treatment outcome. (BMC Cancer,
2009 9: 329, 1-13).
Showed for the first time an aberrant promoter methylation of p16 gene and loss of its
expression which was found to be strongly associated with severity of esophageal lesion.
Further data demonstrated that consumption of bicarbonate-containing hot salted tea which
is a most favorite drink commonly consumed by Kashmiri people is found to be one of the
high risk factors associated with esophageal carcinogenesis. (Mol Cell Biochem,
2009:332; 51-58).
Developed a cost effective technology for easy transportation and simultaneous detection
and application of a multiplex by PCR for all human papillomaviruses (HPVs) from paper
smear. Journal of Medical Microbiology. 2010 Nov;59(Pt 11):1303-10
Showed correlation of promoter hyper methylation of FHIT and RASSF1A genes with
clinical stage and histological grading of cervical carcinoma in Indian women
(Biomarkers, 2008, 13 (6): 597-606). In addition, identified a novel point mutation in
substrate-binding domain of FHIT and showed by computational modeling that it may
generate catalytically inactive protein with loss of tumor suppressor activity ( Mol Cell
Biochem, 2010, Feb, 335(1-2): 53-58).
Showed an association of total homocysteine levels with the risk of developing carcinoma
of the uterine cervix. This association is independent of MTHFR gene polymorphism.
(Biomarkers 2010, Feb., 15(1), 61-68).
Showed elimination of High-Risk Human Papillomavirus Type HPV16 Infection by
‘Praneem’ Polyherbal Tablet in Women with Early Cervical Intraepithelial Lesions. (J
Cancer Res Clin Oncol, 2009 Dec; 135(12):1701-9).
Technologies developed:
Developed a Non Invasive method using urine samples for detection of human
papillomaviruses (HPVs).
Contributed in establishing ICPO-ICMR as a WHO referral Center for HPV serology for
whole South-East Asia.
Developed a cost effective technology for easy transportation and simultaneous detection
and application of a multiplex by PCR for all human papillomaviruses (HPVs) from paper
