During the Autumn term our curriculum will be made up of four strands:

YOU DO NOT NEED TO READ THE WHOLE BOOK IN 1 SESSION

How to build confidence and fluency

Monday– : Look through the book with your child; ask them to locate the title, talk

about the illustrations and then read and discuss the book together, pointing out

challenging words and explaining unfamiliar vocabulary.

Tuesday– Your child reads to you with help where necessary. If a child is decoding

every word in a sentence, it is important that they re-read the sentence for fluency.

Wednesday and Thursday -Your child reads the book again to increase confidence

and fluency. Continue to ask questions to check understanding.

Friday – return the book to school

Reading Quest should be signed each time your child reads with you.

Phonics

What is phonics?

Phonics is a way of teaching children to read and spell fluently and

skilfully.

They are taught:

• how to recognise the sounds that each individual letter makes

• how to identify the sounds that different combinations of letters

make - such as ‘sh’ or ‘oo’;

• how to blend these sounds together from left to right to make a word

e.g. b-e-n-d = bend

• How to segment ( break up ) sounds in a word in order to spell

e.g ‘shop’ sh –o- p

Tricky words

These are words that cannot be sounded out and children will need to recognise them on sight. Here are some games to try at home.

Word Hunt - Hide the words around the room and ask your child to read the words as they find them

Shout out loud - Spread out the words face down. Take it in turns to turn over one word at a time. The first person to shout the word out loud wins it. Keep going until all the words have been won. You can play this with silly voices. Before you turn over a word you have to decide what sort of voice you will use e.g. whisper the word, say it like a gorilla, roar it like

a lion, squeak it like a mouse.

Stepping stones - Spread a number of words over the floor. Ask your child to jump from one word to another as if they are jumping along stepping stones. As they jump they have

to say what word they are going to jump to next. Make sure they say the word before they jump!

Silly sentence - Spread the word cards out face down. Pick 3 cards and turn them face up, say the words as they are turned up. Now try and make up a silly sentence that includes

all 3 words.

Slap the word - Spread a number of words on the table or the floor. Ask someone to say one of the words. Whoever is first to slap the word with their hand (or the back of a

spoon) wins the word.

Speed Challenge -. How quickly can your child say all the words as you show each one in turn? Remember to muddle up the words regularly so that they don’t just remember the

sequence of words you are showing them.

As a school we follow the White Rose Scheme in maths.

PE

• PE Day Monday

• Please ensure children have correct PE kit:– Indoor: Blue or black shorts with blue or white T-shirt and

plimsolls.

– Outdoor games: Shorts, T-shirts and trainers in summer.

– Dark coloured jogging bottoms, sweat shirt and trainers in winter.

• Long hair should be tied back and earrings should not be worn to school on PE days.

• Please inform the teacher or ring the office if another person is collecting your child.

• Please label all uniform, lunch bags, lunch boxes and water bottles.

• Allergies - Please ensure there are no nuts or peanut butter included in packed lunches or snacks.
