Baptist Pulpits Suffer 'Crisis'

By LLOYD PRESLAR Slaff Religion Reporter

The resignation this week of Dr. Ronald E. Wall as pastor of North Winstcn Baptist Church contributes to what one Baptist has called a "small crisis" of vacant Baptist pulpits in the Winston-Salem area.

Dr. Wall's announcement that he will return to his former pastorate at College Park Baptist Church,

····· Greensboro, means that North Winston the fourth largest Baptist Church here will join several other Baptist churches now without pastors.

Among them are Calvary and Forest Hill Baptist Churches, which have more than 500 members each, and Hawthorne Road, Temple and Oaklawn Baptist Churches, which have 300 to 400 members. North Winston has 1,430 members.

Union Grove Baptist Church near Kernersville also has been without a pas

tor, but the Rev. Roy Liner is coming from Greens boro to take over there.

At Oaklawn here, members are expecting word this week from a minister they have called to be their pastor. Temple members have solved their problem temporarily by calling out of retirement the Rev. T. C. Keaton, who was their pastor many years.

Meanwhile, pulpit committees at other churches are at work seeking pastors. The Forest Hill commit tee has been working hard since the Rev. James H. Pernell left there more ihan two months ago.

* * * North Winston members will honor the pastor they are losing Sunday night. Dr. Wall and his wife and family will be guests at a reception following the eve ning service. In addition, there will be a "high attend ance day" observance Sunday morning to show the members' appreciation of his work.

During the five years since Dr. Wall has been at North Winston, 500 persons have joined the church; the church budget has increased from $69,000 to $96,- 000 annually; and a $200,000 educational unit has been constructed.

A North Winston staff member said stewardship has been one of Dr. Wall's major concerns. There are now 150 more pledged tithers at the church than there were when he came.

* * * Dr. Wall had planned to teach a course in Chris-

tian doctrine this fall and winter in one of the classes to be· sponsored by the Pilot Mountain Baptist Assn. and the seminary extension department of the South ern Baptist Convention. But because he is moving, Dr. Wall will not teach the course.

The Christian doctrine course and a course on the rural church will be taught at Quaker Gap Baptist Church in Stokes County, beginning in mid-November. Courses in the New Testament and homiletics will be taught at Beck's Baptist Church here, beginning Sept. 6.

The Rev. W. Elvin Jones of Clemmons Baptist Church is in charge of registration.
