Dr Cummings (b. 1911 in Reidsville, North Carolina, USA) with a Ph.D. in Soil Science from Ohio State University in 1938, worked in a variety of capacities as scientist (Cornell and North Carolina State Universities) and science- administrator (Rockefeller and Ford, among others). Dr Cummings served as Director at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and as founder Director of ICRISAT.
