Importance of primary sector

In a country like India the main source of income even today is

agriculture. Many of Indias agricultural products, livestock,

minerals extracted , etc. are exported by which foreign

currencyis flowing. The well being the secondary and tertiary

sectors depends upon the primary sector. If the primary sector runs well then the secondary sector

which consists of industries runs smoothly. Most of the

industries are based on agricultural products.

Besides, due to its overwhelming population, India needs a

huge supply of food grains. It is better to produce eat the

countrys produce of lower cost than to import food grains

from other countries! The same goes for livestock. Hence, the

agriculture sector must produce good yields.

Company rule in India brought a major change in thetaxation and agricultural policies, which tended topromote commercialization of agriculture with a focuson trade, resulting in decreased production of foodcrops, mass impoverishment and destitution of farmers,and in the short term, led to numerous famines.

The economic policies of the British Raj caused asevere decline in the handicrafts and handloom sectors,due to reduced demand and dipping employment. Afterthe removal of international restrictions by the Charterof 1813, Indian trade expanded substantially and overthe long term showed an upward trend. The result wasa significant transfer of capital from India to England,which, due to the colonial policies of the British, led toa massive drain of revenue rather than any systematiceffort at modernization of the domestic economy.

India's colonization by the British created an institutional

environment that, on paper, guaranteed propertyrights among the colonizers, encouraged free trade, andcreated a single currency with fixed exchange rates,standardized weights and measures and capital markets.It also established a well-developed systemof railways and telegraphs, a civil service that aimed tobe free from political interference, a common-law and anadversarial legal system.

This coincided with major changes in the world economy industrialization, and significant growth in production andtrade. However, at the end of colonial rule, Indiainherited an economy that was one of the poorest in thedeveloping world, with industrial development stalled,

agriculture unable to feed a rapidly growing population, alargely illiterate and unskilled labour force, and extremelyinadequate infrastructure.

The 1872 census revealed that 91.3% of the population of

the region constituting present-day India resided invillages, and urbanization generally remained sluggish until the1920s, due to the lack of industrialization and absence ofadequate transportation.

Subsequently, the policy of discriminating protection (wherecertain important industries were given financial protection bythe state), coupled with the Second World War, saw thedevelopment and dispersal of industries, encouraging rural-urban migration, and in particular the large port citiesof Bombay, Calcutta and Madras grew rapidly. Despite this,only one-sixth of India's population lived in cities by 1951.

The impact of British occupation on India'seconomy is a controversial topic. Leaders ofthe Indian independence movement and economichistorians have blamed colonial occupation forthe dismal state of India's economy in itsaftermath and argued that financial strength

required for industrial development in Europewas derived from the wealth taken fromcolonies in Asia and Africa. At the same time,right-wing historians have countered thatIndia's low economic performance was due to

Other Results

India transformed itself from a starving nation to an exporter

of food. Green Revolution was one factor that made Mrs.

Indra Gandhi (1917-84) and her party, a very powerful political

force in India.

Poorer farmers cannot achieve yields as high as those withbetter access to water, fertilizer and land.

More people own land, but it is being divided into smaller and

smaller plots. This is because of population growth and land

redistribution schemes.

After the growthof economic activity, a support system

was needed to facilitate the industrial activity. Certainsectors like transport and finance play an important rolein

supporting the industrial activity. Moreover, more shops

were needed to provide goods in peoples neighbourhood.

Also, when people earned more and more money due to

industrial jobs, the demand for services to lead a luxury life

increased.

Ultimately, other services like tuition, administrative

support developedalong with cinema, railway, etc.
