Group Decisions Vs. Individual DecisionsPresentationsIndividualGroup
GiselleThe business executive is by profession a decision maker. Uncertainty is his opponent. Overcoming it is his mission. John McDonaldGiselleQuote from beginning of chapter 3Summarizes this mgmt process of managerial decision makingManagers will face various decisions: Lack of structure, uncertainty, and conflict can influence these decisionsManagers ultimate goal is to make effective decisions that will benefit their subordinates
13Presented by Phillip ScottEffects of Managerial Decision Making14Effect on meCan I assume Dr. Patti knows what shes doing? How do I learn best?I could see she bought into this decision and was dedicated to seeing it work
PhillipDr. Patti made choice to not lecture and have students present. Was this an optimized choice?Did I learn more by being thrown into the material rather than having it lectured to me? Am I more likely to listen to classmates talk than a professor?Dr. Patti was dedicated to her decision and worked hard to see us succeed returned slides that needed work, answered questions about projects, worked with students who had issues arise, etc.Effect on group Challenged us to work together without a leader Decision-making process was more complicated Encouraged input and discouraged satisfisingPhillipA single manager can make a decision alone, but as a group, we were forced to examine alternative solutions and decide on courses of action together. Dr. Patti therefore helped us improve our communication skills, both within our group and publicly, and helped us understand the importance of working together
Effect on class Encouraged creativity Added importance to our work Made us feel connected
PhillipEveryone is doing the same thing but we want to do it differently If we fail, we fail the class, who wont learn what we were supposed to teach Were all in this together, all in the same boat
Planning and Strategic ManagementEthics and Corporate ResponsibilityInternational ManagementEntrepreneurshipPlanning: Delivering Strategic Value
18Presented by Meet ShahEstablishing Vision and Mission19Planning: Strategic Value begins withEstablishment ofVisionMission
MeetOne of the standout processes that stayed with me throughout the course was what we had established during the first couple of weeks of class.
The vision and mission was best explained when an example of JFK to NASAA was given by Dr. Patti. The Vision would be to put the 1st man on the moon and the mission would be to beat the Russians.
The vision and mission of our class is:
Vision - Our vision is to be a manager of the future.
Our mission was to become- Understanding and familiarizing with conceptual and practical issues involved in management of individuals and groups-We built our understanding and became familiar with these issues by studying the textbook and working on our individual and group projects.- Build diagnostic skills for understanding how management processes affect organizational behavior.- We were able to learn this by the various models Dr. Patti had taught us.i.e.Simple Business Model which in essence taught us that the way you wire things creates certain behaviors which then create results.- To build communication skills, analysis and problem solving.- Our written skills in communication were consistently improving as we wrote our individual and group papers and with a firm foundation laid by the textbook and the teaching of Dr. Patti we were able to generate various analyses and problem solving techniques. - To understand specific challenges facing management in a diverse and global economy.- This is relevant to our final project. We had to face challenges such as working with a group which was 4 times the size of any group weve worked with in this class and we also had to execute this project within a week. Not only was that a challenge but to work with 19 different personalities from all over the globe gave us all a great learning experience on how to work effectively with a large and diverse organization.
20Planning: Delivering Strategic ValueHow my team and I were affectedMeetIn order to deliver strategic value I feel it is important to have a strong foundation. A foundation of an organization that wants to deliver strategic value should begin with a vision and a mission. I am have set a vision and a mission personally. My vision is to be a successful researcher and to be one of the best managers in the company. My mission is to become a manager.
While working on our group projects it was very important to identify the vision and mission of the corporation we chose in order to correct the areas which are wrong. Sometimes organizations go off tangent and lose sight of their vision and or mission. A great way to reassess such an issue is by going back to the vision and mission to get the organization back on track.21Presented by Vik ReddyUnderstanding the Changes Around you22Planning:Understanding the Changes Around YouBaby BoomersGen-XMillennial1947-19641964-19801980 - PresentVietnam, Post WarCold War9/11JFK Sexual RevolutionGlobalizationMoon LandingDiscoGreenWoodstockAIDSInternetCivil RightsDigital ImmigrantDigital NativesVikA discussion that will stick with me through my business career is the chart that we made breaking down historical moments that affected businesses worldwide. The Chart explains historical moments that affected how businesses adapted to changes. For any business to succeed it needs to be able to adapt to the changing moments. From start of class to the very end Dr. Patti has brought current event situations and how it effects us now and it could effect us individually or in the future which has taught each one of us that we need to be able to adapt to changes around us to succeed and that we can learn from our past and their determinations to succeed. Best example: JFK Moon Speech comparing to Obamas speech to go to Mars 23Planning:Understanding the Changes Around YouGroup vs. Individual
VikGroup:Our group presentations allowed us to work together as a team to identify how events affected businesses from cable wars to brake problems with Toyota. During my group project, members in my group quickly were able to work around situation where other members in our group dealt with personal matters.
Individuals:Through this past semester, there has been changes to the online marketing field from Facebooks universal like button. For me to understand all the changes and to get the experience I took a non-paid internship with online social community to learn all the changes in the social online marketing field. Sometimes it is needed for me to think outside of the box to be able to adapt to changes. All of the students in this class, has been effected from outside situations especially the government budget shortfalls. 24Presented by Asli InciEthical Decision Making25Planning: Ethical Decision MakingPlanningVery important in management process A process for accomplishing purpose Helps managers understand more clearly what they want to achieve and avoid mistakes
EthicsSystem of rules that guides behavior in the world of businessChoose among several actions that must be evaluated as morally right or wrong
AsliPurpose of a plan create a desired goal. After setting up a plan, following a code of ethics is important in order to maintain that plan. Maintaining a plan will help avoid mistakes and unethical choices.
26Group presentationsPlan to work together to get the task done
Make sure we were ethical when planning Consistently communicated with one anotherEveryone did their part and didnt lack offMake sure we met time requirementsCompleted group paper
AsliOur plan/desired goal was to work together in a group to give a presentation on a company. After setting up our group, we had to make sure we were ethical. We consistently communicated, made sure no one lacked off, completed project on time, and had one person complete the group paper and power point presentation. All of this had to be planned.
27Individual & GroupHow I was affected
How group was affectedAsliHow I was affected Learned the importance of teamwork. Realized that group project couldnt be complete without the whole group doing their part of our plan.
How group was affected Each group consisted of diverse students. All had to work together in group presentations and be ethical. Whats ethical and correct for one person could be wrong and unethical for another person. 28Presented by Valentina YakimovichIssues and Challenges in global economy29Planning: Delivering Strategic value within global economySWOT ANALYSISStrength: Instant exposure to global economy BRIC vs. PIGSOpportunities: Develop and exercise logical and critical thinking Figure out things that drive the economy of the countries in 2 categoriesValentina30SWOT Analysis Cont.Weaknesses: more interaction ex. the ability to interact with the guest from Italy getting different perspective on the global/local economyThreats leading to Potential Benefits: Innovative way of teaching Letting each student plan out and conduct a lecture Valentina31Group vs. Individual DevelopmentGroup project:Diversity: each group consisted of 1 international individual Issues involved in managing groups Individual Development: Presenting a chapter from the book and an individual paper Plan and deliver skills acquired from class

64Challenges and IssuesPresentationsSome presentations were interesting, but purpose was not clear or defined and time limits were often exceeded.Working around teammates schedulesCommunication and Response DelaysLack of available class time to discuss/organize group workDifferent personalities and learning stylesDr. Patti had to ensure everyone was engaged through the various deliveries of course contentShafali65Challenges and Issues (cont.)Diverse ClassWork experience, age, nationalitiesAdded interesting views as well as challengesIndividualismPeople wishing to be their own leaders rather than working as a groupCohesivenessShafali66Recommendations
67RecommendationsMaterialCover less chapters more in-depthMore group presentations rather than individual chapter presentationsLess or shorter Chapter presentationsBreaking up presentations with more applicationInstead of mixing personality types, try groups of similar personality types (Myers-Briggs)
