The Sensible Environmentalist

Confessions of a Greenpeace Dropout - Forestry IndustryDr. Patrick Moore has played a prominent role in raising environmentalism to the forefront of public concern in Canada and throughout the world. Based on his book, Confessions of a Greenpeace Dropout, Moore details his vision for a more sustainable world. One of his greatest talents is his ability to clearly set out the environmental challenges we face and identify innovative solutions. His principle beliefs for the forestry industry are based on logic and known scientific facts, avoiding sensationalism, and scare tactics:

“Dr. Moore captivated our audience with his talk on forest sustainability… Strategically, Dr. Moore’s talk inspires me to re-think about how our forest management practices contribute to sustainability.”

Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources

“We should grow more trees and use more wood. Wood is the most important renewable material and energy resource. Throughout the history of civilization, wood was the most important source of energy until coal and then oil and gas were harnessed over the past two centuries. Wood remains by far the most important source of renewable energy, and likely always will. Trees also supply well over 90 percent of our renewable materials: wood used extensively for construction and furniture, and paper used for printing, packaging, and sanitary paper products. It is patently ridiculous for environmentalists to be generally opposed to the most important renewable resource on earth. Yet this is the case.

Emotional arguments based on misinformation give the impression that deforestation is caused by wood consumption. We have been misled into thinking that when we use wood we are causing a bit of forest to be lost somewhere, when in fact the consumption of wood sends a signal into the marketplace to plant more trees.

Deforestation, the permanent loss of forests, is not caused by forestry or by using wood. It is caused by clearing forests for agriculture and cities. Rather than being some evil plot by multinational forestry corporations, deforestation is what we do to feed and house our population. Sustainable forestry results in reforestation, a win-win for the economy and the environment.”
