Welcome to MET’s 20th season of producing exciting, quality, professional theatre in downtown Frederick! We began our journey in June of 1998 producing the MET created Finally Heard! Feminine Heroes of an Uncivil War and have produced over 120 main-stage productions since that summer. With the explosion of the 24/7 media/news market, fake news, and constant messaging, our ensemble feels it is necessary to explore topics that challenge the audience. Although Orwell’s 1984 was first published in 1949, we find
the messaging still very relevant today. The MET is committed to providing a wide array of art and entertainment for our community. We believe in shifting gears as you can see from our play selection; from the enthusiastic comedy The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) to 1984 then to the beloved holiday classic A Christmas Story. If you are a local, or just visiting, we hope you have a chance to explore our great hometown; there are over 40 restaurants within walking distance, plenty of places to shop, parking is cheap or free, and there are many, many options for nightlife after the show. If you are unfamiliar with MET, we have a resident ensemble of over 35 artists, a staff of 8, and 15 board members who dedicate massive energy as they pour their souls into every corner of our work. Our ensemble, board and staff are committed to interesting, entertaining, provocative and joyful theatre art. As an ensemble we work together to build theatre, which sparks audience dialogue, which builds community. We are so thankful that you have made the choice to spend some time with us; we hope you have a great time at MET!

Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past.
George Orwell, 1984
There have been times in the past year or so when Orwell’s dystopian tale has felt disturbingly familiar. The techniques Big Brother uses to control a society seem alarmingly accurate. The fear-mongering of the Party feels uncomfortably relevant. For audiences already familiar with Winston Smith’s punishment for ‘thoughtcrime’ this unique adaptation by Micheal Gene Sullivan allows us to explore the reflection and analyzation of
the four party members who assist in the torturous interrogation. Throughout they are challenged with a struggle between conviction and doubt, loyalty and free thinking…..Does 2+2 really equal 5? I love how the audience is taken through Winston’s journey with him going along for the ride with us as we both are witness to re-enactments of his moments of revolt. In our climate of alternative facts generated from Washington and some media, we can only hope that by bringing such stories as “1984” to the stage, we can encourage activism on a local (as well as national) level.
