This past December Dr. Henry E. Perrine Academy of the Arts collected hundreds of toys as a result of their sixth annual Toys for Tots drive.
Michael Fein, Miami Palmetto
Sr is one of four students in the State of Florida and the only one from Miami Dade County to be recognized by as Regeneron STS 2018 Scholar. Michael and his school will each receive $2,000 to use toward STEM-related activi-ties.
Cutler Bay Sr announced
their 2018 Silver Knight Nomi-nees: Darian Cosme, Athletics; Brett Nweeia, Social Science; and Libertad Gonzalez, World Languages.
Sidney Starman, Dante
Padron, Dominic Bono and Jose Hermida of Coral Reef Sr recently competed in the Florida High School Athletic Association’s High State Meet Class. Sidney and Dante swam a 500 free stroke, Dominic swam a 200 individ-ual medley and Jose swam a 100 breaststroke.
City of Homestead Council-
woman Patricia Fairclough and the Education Committee awarded mini grants to the following teachers to fund classroom projects: Brenda Gaudet and Cynthia Dahl, Homestead Sr; Lisa Banegas, Silvana Bermudez, Caroline Lancelot-Bedard and Dr. Mona Benard, Gateway Environmental K-8 Learning Center; Lorna Smith, Laura C. Saunders El; Tania Rousseau and Jessamy Matheson, West Homestead K-8 Center.
Mr. Jason Chohonis, Social
Studies teacher, Cutler Bay Sr. was one of 12 public school teachers selected to participate in the Dimensions of China Empowering American Public School teachers to Transform Social Studies Curriculum in Secondary Classrooms through a grant from the US Department of Education. Mr. Chohonis will have an oppor-tunity to immerse in the Chinese Culture during a five week study abroad visit through China and Hong Kong.

The SLAC meeting was hosted this month by BioTech at Fairchild Gardens. Students were able to participate in a tour of the grounds and receive an in depth his-tory of the Gardens, as well as, see all the spe-cies of plants, trees and palms that call Fairchild their home. We appreci-ate Mr. Danny Mateo, Principal, Bio Tech Student Government leaders and Ms. Barbie Garcia, Activities Direc-tor, for coordinating this visit and providing the students with very crea-tive and healthy snacks. Thank you to Ms. Ana Rodriguez, South Region Director, for joining us.
