King Abdullah University Hospital

was inaugurated by his Majesty

King Abdullah II on 28 November

2002, has become one of the most

prominent and reputable hospitals in

Jordan and the region. It was

established to address the critical

lack of central, advanced medical

facilities serving the population of

Northern Jordan.

To pursue our excellence in medical care, the plan is to transform

KAUH into comprehensive medical city. The establishment of

Radiotherapy Center is one of our top priorities in the near future,

and the work is rapidly undergoing.

KAUH is planning to establish a network with other governmental

hospitals in the northern region, to organize and coordinate the

medical care in a cost-effective and efficient manner.

KAUH is committed to bringing state-of-the-art medical services

to our country, while remaining true to our mission of caring for

the people in our community, we serve based on three main issues:

1.Establish the concept of social responsibility to meet the needs of

the local community.

2.Hold ongoing free medical days, and overall health awareness

campaigns.

3.Increase the effectiveness of media communications and

education to the community through the media platforms and

social media networking.

We will continue at providing efficient caring services to our

patients and our community in a courteous and professional way.

We will strive to provide high quality, cost-efficient health care.

May God guide us in our service and the renaissance of our

country under the leadership of Majesty King Abdullah II, who

directs us always by his thoughts, which are enlightened to the

hard work that serves the process of construction and development,

which are based on useful knowledge, sincere work and genuine

achievement.

King Abdullah University Hospital, often-abbreviated KAUH, is

the largest medical structure in the north of Jordan, serving

approximately two million inhabitants from the Irbid, Ajloun,

Jerash, and Mafraq governorates. It is also the teaching hospital

affiliated with Jordan University of Science and Technology

(JUST). The hospital is staffed with full-time physicians and

surgeons who are members in the Faculty of Medicine at JUST.

JUST medical, dentistry, and nursing students complete

laboratories, practicals, internship, and residency at or in close

conjunction with KAUH and its extensive facilities.

The overall area of various hospital buildings is 95,583 m², in

addition to a double story car park of 9,000-m² area. The hospital

has a bed capacity of 683, which can be increased to 800 beds in

an emergency. KAUH was built at a cost of approximately $120

million; the hospital includes all the main medical department.

KAUH is providing state of the art medical care through

distinguished medical and paramedical staff, equipped with up to

date technology. For this, several centers of excellence have

been established; such as: (IVF, Feto- Maternal Medicine, Spine

Surgery, Cochlear Implant, Diabetic Foot and others).

Dr. Shadi Hamouri, Consultant of Thoracic Surgery at

the hospital, and a faculty member in the faculty of

medicine at the Jordan University of Science and

Technology, stated that the technique of using balloon

dilatation by the flexible bronchoscope is relatively a

modern technology that has proved to be effective in

the treatment of these cases successfully without high

rate of surgical complications compared with

conventional methods.

Dr. Hamouri added that the patient left the hospital

after he underwent the procedure successfully. His

symptoms have been alleviated and nearly disappeared

after the procedure cause the trachea has been dilated

into 90% of its normal diameter.

Dr. Mohannad Al Qudah, a Consultant of Ear, Nose and

Throat surgery at the hospital, and a faculty member in

the Faculty of Medicine at the Jordan University of

Science and Technology, said that; the patient came to

the hospital as an emergency case complaining of

shortness of breath and a feeling of suffocation, in

addition to the stridor that resulted from the narrowing

of the trachea that exceeds 80 percent of its normal

diameter.

Innovative medical procedure to treat Subglottic Tracheal Stenosis at King

Abdullah University Hospital

A modern innovative procedure has been performed

at the King Abdullah University Hospital recently to

treat a post intubation tracheal subglottic stenosis.

This modern medical procedure was performed for

Jordanian citizen who lives in Kuwait. The patient

was sustained a road traffic accident that resulted in

head injury and prolonged ventilation in Egypt. Few

weeks after discharge from the hospital the patient

started to develop shortness of breath, stridor as well

as audible wheeze. He was diagnosed with

subglottic tracheal stenosis that is a known

complication of prolonged intubation. The patient

referred for further treatment where “flexible

bronchoscopic balloon tracheal dilatation” of the

tracheal stenosis was done successfully.

Dr. Khalid said that the patient is a 24 year

old female was suffering from difficulties in

breathing and chest pain, was diagnosed with

mitral valve regurgitation, atrial septal defect,

patent ductus arteriosus along with abnormal

origin of the coronary artery.

The patient left the hospital after her

convalescence period and she is in a very

good health.

A unique cardiac surgery involving repairing the mitral valve without the need

for its replacement

A cardiac surgery team lead by Dr. Khalid Ibrahim

at King Abdullah University Hospital has managed

to perform a unique cardiac surgery involving

repairing the mitral valve without the need for its

replacement in addition to closing an atrial septal

defect; that is an abnormal opening between the

right and the left atria and closing a patent ductus

arteriosus which is a channel between the aorta and

the left pulmonary artery.

Mohammed Matalqa said that the department with the

supervision of the Head of Occupational Therapy

Section, Bushra Abu Zina has designed a helmets for

temporary protection of the brain in a number of

patients who underwent decompressive Craniotomy for

treating Head injuries.

He indicates that the patient can leave the hospital and

practice normal life during the period (from three to six

months) until a delayed Cranioplasty using the frozen

flap of skull bone.

He said the technology used in KAUH for reconstruction of

permanent bone of the skull is a high-level technology based

in terms of precision and perfection using the technology of

3D CT scan.

Dr. Matalqa added that the departments is also helping in

reconstruction of the skull bone using synthetic materials in

cases of skull bone comminution or infection. the physical

medicine and the rehabilitation department has all the modern

facilities to meet the total range of patient care using exercise

therapy with the aid of different devices, electrical , thermal

and hydrotherapy therapy, moist heat therapy and paraffin

wax bath and others.

Fixing Helmet for Protection of the Brain

It is worth mentioning that patients with short stature

(who suffer from achondroplasia) need at least three

operations to achieve the full length, starting from the

age of eight, during which the patient earns the length of

25-40 cm as follows:

1. At age of eight we lengthen the lower limbs by 10 cm.

2. At age of ten, we lengthen the upper limbs by 10 cm.

3. At age of twelve, we lengthen the lower limbs by 15

cm.

And if the patient wants more height he can undergo

another operation to gain additional 15 cm by the age of

fifteen.

Furthermore, the early start of lengthening operations

make the patient able to walk with the device installed,

due to the lightweight of the patient at this age. Also, the

patient can finish his operations before the end of his

middle school study, thereby alleviating the negative

psychological impact on the patient where he can reach

puberty with equal length of his peers.

Dr. Rami Aljahmani a specialist of Pediatric

Othopedic Reconstructive Surgery conducted an

elongation operation to a short stature patient

suffering from achondroplasia aged 8 years old. The

first stage of a three staged planned operation was

operated successfully, where an Orthofix device was

installed and the patient gained 12 centimeters. This

device is smaller than a device called Ilizarov

through which the surgeon can lengthen the legs and

thigh bones at the same time and the patient can

wear his clothes over the device.

and Scar treatment: laser (ablative and non-ablative), micro

4. cosmetic procedures: skin injections: Botox, fillers,

mesotherapy, micro needling/collagen induction therapy,

chemical peels and skin rejuvenation

5. phototherapy: for treatments of many skin conditions:

Full- body units for NBUVB and UVA.: Psoriasis,

eczema…, hand /foot units: for localized skin treatments and

MED/MPD testing

6. General anesthesia treatments: Complex and large

vascular malformations especially in children, Extensive

scars, Large various types of nevie…

7. Patch testing: for allergic contact eczema and other types

of eczemas according to clinical indication.

Dr. Al-Qarqaz stated that the department is equipped with

many machines, instruments that help to provide a service

with high standard. This includes world class lasers (5

different laser types), phototherapy units, electrosurgical

units, cryosurgery, various surgical instruments,

dermoscopes and various others.

He added that Full-time consultants, residents and part-time

consultants cover the department clinics on daily basis and

various subspecialties.

The consultant of skin diseases, head of Dermatology

Department at KAUH, Dr. Firas Al-Qarqaz said that the

department is providing unique medical services on skin diseases

include:

1. Medical services: Includes diagnosis and treatment of various

skin conditions including inflammatory skin disorders (Eczema,

psoriasis…), skin infections (viral, Bacterial, Fungal…),

pigmentary disorders, hair and nail disorders, benign skin

growths and malignant skin tumors among many other

conditions, Dermoscopic examination for suspicious pigmented

skin lesions, In-patient consultations

2. Laser unit: Vascular laser: for various vascular

malformations, hemangiomas, varicose veins and other vascular

conditions, Hair remove laser, Pigmented lesion laser and

Ablative laser

Advanced medical services for skin diseases at KAUH

title “Cross-cultural comparison of fertility specific

quality of life in German, Hungarian and Jordanian

couples attending a fertility center”

The aim was to measure cross-cultural differences

in fertility specific quality of life of infertile

couples in Germany, Hungary and Jordan who

attend a fertility centers, in a cross-sectional study.

Overall, 750 couples were included in the study

(252 couples were from Assisted conception center

at King Abdullah University Hospital in Jordan).

The study revealed only a few cultural differences

in fertility specific quality of life between couples

of the three countries. However, Jordanian couples

reported poorer fertility-related quality of life than

Germans and Hungarians, a significant difference

in the emotional domain was observed.

Thus, infertility counselors should pay attention to

psychosocial problems rooted in individual

sociocultural aspects of infertile couples regardless

of cultural stereotypes.

Only a few studies have reported cross-cultural

comparisons regarding psychosocial consequences of

infertility.
