Things you might like to know Church Planting – During his time at Marvin UMC, a new church start was birthed by providing 35 “seed” members and raising $350,000 in four weeks. Dayspring UMC now has over 400 worshippers on average. Equipping and Empowering Laity – “I spend a great deal of time teaching and preaching about the responsibility all Christians have to be in service in the name of Jesus Christ and the role we all play in making disciples. We have an action-‐oriented faith and this point will be stressed over and over.” Evangelism – “I hope to create an environment where this is the expectation that all of us have a role in making disciples for Jesus Christ, and in the process, transform the world.” Leadership Strengths – “I hope my greatest strength is always my passion for my faith. I am a strong and passionate preacher and teacher. I typically teach two bible studies and one book study each week. I am very good at creating vision for the congregation, with input and support from the laity. I am very relational and have a good sense of humor that I naturally incorporate into my ministry.” Leadership Style – “I try to lead by example. I am not a micro-‐manager. I maintain regular contact with staff and establish a chain of command. It is critical to build a strong sense of community within the staff. As a result, I require all staff to participate in ‘staff days of service’ together, which involve a hands-‐on mission project in the fall and spring. I also have yearly staff development retreats involving recreation and team building.” Missions – At Marvin UMC, $125,000 was raised for the United Methodist campaign, Nothing But Nets, to combat the spread of malaria. He also initiated a relationship with Mercy Ships, which is a hospital ship that goes to impoverished countries and provides life-‐saving and life-‐changing surgeries for those living in dire circumstances, and provides hope and healing all in the name of Christ. Through this relationship, Marvin UMC provides more direct support to this cause than any other church through finances and service. Dr. Robbins and members of the staff have also volunteered in Togo, Africa, for this mission. Raising Up New Pastors – During the last four years at Marvin UMC, five people have received the call to ministry and have begun the ordination process. Theology – “I am a biblically based preacher and teacher. I have a very strong Christology. That means, among other things, that I continually emphasize the importance of trying to be Christ-‐like in all we do, individually and corporately. I stress small group involvement and I work hard to assimilate new members into the life of the church.” Congratulatory cards and notes can be sent to: Dr. John & Susan Robbins 2122 Kennebunk Ln.
