CLINICAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE WORK EXPERIENCE 1996-present Part time Private Practice. Dr. Joanne Gusella has been practicing as a registered psychologist in Nova Scotia for

27 years. She treats children, adolescents and adults using individual and family therapy. Dr. Gusella has expertise in helping youth and adults who are feeling anxious or

depressed, to be able to manage stress, regulate their emotions, and improve their relationships with others, as well as to find and harness their own voice, in order to be able to move forward towards their personal goals. She also has a specialty in the treatment of eating disorders in children and youth using Family Based Therapy, and in treating adults with individual therapy. Along with a Cognitive Behavioural Approach, Dr. Gusella utilizes a variety of therapeutic strategies emerging from Narrative and Solution Focused Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, as well as Emotion Focused Family Therapy.

Dr. Gusella is an Assistant Professor with Dalhousie Psychiatry and a Clinical Associate of Dalhousie Department of Psychology. She is also a representative on the Nova Scotia Eating Disorder Treatment Network, whose mandate is to enhance evidence-based services to individuals who develop an eating disorder. Her most recent research at the IWK Health Centre has involved evaluating Family Based Treatment Informed practice, and a 2-day workshop based on principles of Emotion Focused Family Therapy.

a) Multi-disciplinary Team Leader. Eating Disorders Clinic. Administrative responsibilities include overseeing the development and smooth functioning of the clinic, preparing the budget, collecting and interpreting patient statistics, staff development, program evaluation, coordinating research efforts, chairing team meetings, Partnership development with Public Health and Health Educators. Clinical responsibilities include group and individual therapy with in- and out-patients, and consultation. Teaching duties include the development and presentation of workshops, prevention efforts (i.e. educating students in junior high and high schools, involvement in the education of pediatric, psychiatric residents and psychology interns and practicum students.

b) Private Practice: I have a part-time private practice in Halifax. I see children, adolescents and adults, and the services that I provide are assessment, treatment and consultation. My areas of practice include: Eating Disorders, Anxiety Disorders including OCD, Child Behavior Problems, Parenting Skills, Stress, Depression and Anger management, Social Skills and Assertiveness training, Interpersonal/Relationship problems, Self-Esteem Building. Approaches include Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Maudsley Family Therapy,

Assessment and treatment of children and adolescents up to age 19 with the full range of behavioral, emotional and psychiatric problems including Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Disorder, Conduct Disorder, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, Pervasive Developmental Disorder (Autism), Learning Disabilities and learning problems, d Developmental and emotional problems including Major Depression, Eating Disorders, Bipolar illness, Anxiety Disorders. I also taught parenting skills for parents of children and adolescents, and conducted family assessment and treatment. Individual and couple sessions were also conducted with parents, when parents required individual therapy, or marriage counselling. 1991-1996 Clinical Psychologist/Consultant to Psychiatry (children and adolescents, in- and outpatients, IWK Children's Hospital, Halifax, Nova Scotia). Involves the assessment and treatment of children and adolescents with a range of emotional and behavioral problems including ADHD, Autism, Oppositional Disorder, Anxiety, Depression, OCD. Also involved in parent education. Co-developer of the Eating Disorders Clinic, and psychologist on the multi disciplinary treatment team.
