Community involvement outside the university

I have been involved voluntarily in various nonprofit and community organizations, where I

contribute from my knowledge and expertise. These included national committees, developing

infrastructural services for the third sector in Israel (see under Professional functions outside

universities/institutions), and supporting umbrella organizations and coalitions of the third sector

and civil society in Israel. Below are some of the initiatives and organizations I have been

involved with:

Sheatufim, for the promotion of Civil Society in Israel.

Israel Civic Leadership Association

Roundtable of Lay Leadership in Israel, in collaboration with School of Volunteer Leadership,

JDC Israel.

Current research synopsis

My current work focuses on three main issues. The first issue continues my work on

nonprofit management, with a particular interest in the blurring boundaries between business and

nonprofit organizations. In this topic, I have studied workforce integration of intellectually

disabled persons – comparing nonprofit, for-profit and social/business hybrid organizations’

responses (Katz and Sasson, 2017); corporate social responsibility (Amrousy, Gavious-Madar,

Katz, and Yosef, 2012); and leadership, ethics and motivations in social entrepreneurship in

social enterprises and nonprofit-business hybrid organizations (Cohen & Katz, 2016).

The second issue is philanthropic grantmaking foundations, and their changing forms of

investment and giving. I am currently doing research on Social Impact Bonds (with Levy and

Yosef) and on investment and payout decisions in grantmaking foundations (with Zvika Afik).

In the third stream I delve into the micro level of research I have done on giving and

volunteering, by looking at the interrelations between different manifestations of social

engagement and pro-social behavior. Within this area I have done a series of studies on the

different aspects of social engagement of young persons (Haski-Leventhal, Yogev-Keren and

Katz, 2012; Sasson and Katz, 2014; plus a current study of youth leadership in the periphery

with Alon Lisak). My current interests have a specific focus on the role of trust, and particularly

the complex relations it has with social engagement and different philanthropic behaviors

(giving, volunteering, organizing, organ donations, political engagement), while drawing

important and less discussed distinctions between trust, distrust and mistrust, particularized and

generalized trust, individual and institutional trust, and more. Within this topic I am currently

writing on how trust and need for control affect self and next-of-kin organ donations decisions

(with Ayelet Gneezy and Maria Bleckher), and published articles on the effect of trust on social

engagement of teens in democratic schools (Strier & Katz, 2015) and the impact of nonprofit

public image and brand identity on donations (Katz, 2017).
