Dr. G.B. Parulkar (MB,MS, F.A.C.S., F.A.M.S., FA.Sc., FRSM (Lon.), Cardiovascular Thoracic Surgeon)

Born on 1st December 1931,native of Mumbai, completed basic education in Elphinstonecollege, Mumbai Passed M.B.B.S. In 1955 and M.S. In 1958 from Mumbai University. Dr. G. B.Parulkar is a Internationally Acclaimed Cardiovascular Surgeon and Meritorious teacher whohas provided services to generations of students from G.S. Medical College , as a LecturerAssistant Professor, Professor, Director Professor and Head Dept. of Surgery, Dean &Director of G.S. Medical College & K.E.M. Hospital and currently as Professor Emeritus of Surgery.

He had his advanced training in surgery & Cardiovascular Surgery at Baylor College ofMedicine, Houston Texas, Oregon Health Science University; Portland, Mayo Clinic RochesterMinnesota, Harvard School of Medicine; Boston Massachusetts, Johns Hopkins and NationalInstitute of Health; Bethesda, Maryland, and Stanford university; Palo Alto, California. He latervisited 75 Medical Universities in the USA, UK and Europe.

He has trained large number of Cardiovascular Surgeons and Researchers from all parts ofthe country. He was responsible for establishing several new Teaching & Training centers inCardiovascular Surgery in Mumbai & in rest of the country.

He has adorned the position of President of Indian Association of Cardiovascular SurgeonsPresident of Association of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons of Asia , President ofAssociation of Surgeons of India ,President of International Union of Angiology, Asia, Chairmanof the First and the Second World Congress on Open Heart Surgery , Vice President ofCardiological Society of India, Vice President of National Academy of Medical Sciences, Memberof expert Advisory Panel on Cardiovascular Diseases – World Health Organization, Geneva , Hon. Advisor, Armed Forces Medical Services and Hon Advisor, Governor of Maharashtra .

Because he has been extremely dynamic , inspiring educator and mentor through out his life;because he has been an institution in himself , he was recipient of highly prestigious Nationaland International Awards including “Padmabhushan”, from President of India (1998), Dr B CRoy National Award of the Medical Council of India, as the Eminent Medical Man of the year(1997), Dr Bakulev Medal of USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, Soviet Union (1990); BritishCommon Wealth Professorship from British Council, UK (1989), Dr. B C Roy National Award foroutstanding contribution to the specialty of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery(1983),Outstanding Physician of the Decade (1973 to 82), Dr Evarts A Graham, award of theAmerican Association for Thoracic Surgery (1967 – 68), US Public Health International Award ofNational Institute of Health from USA (1966 – 67) Sushruta Award (1964), Life Time AchievementAwards from ACTSA , and IACVTS.(2008).

He has been elected as Fellow of several Prestigious National and International Societies inrecognition of his professional, academic & teaching work which include Fellowship of NationalAcademy of Medical Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, International Council on ArtificialHeart, the Royal Society of Medicine, London, New York Academy of Sciences, American College ofSurgeons, American Society of Thoracic Surgeons, Australian Society of Cardiothoracic Surgery, WorldSociety of Cardiothoracic Surgeons, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Council of American Heart Association.

He has delivered 697 scientific papers, including 32 orations and there are 303 scientific publications

to his credit. He has traveled widely as a visiting Professor to deliver University lecturers in severalcountries including the USA, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Belgium, Greece, USSR,Republic of China, Japan & Australia. He has been a Doyen amongst Cardiovascular Surgeons, ahighly respected Research Scientist, and Teacher with exceptional merit and a very able MedicalAdministrator, who has made outstanding contributions to the Teaching & Training of generation ofundergraduate & postgraduate Medical students , Research students , Nurses ,Therapists &Technicians & Health Care Workers from all over our country. He has had an illustrious careerspanning over fifty years as a Guru and Mentor of many leading Cardiovascular Surgeons and

havebeen a successful Institutional Builder and Contributor to Medical Social Services and has takenkeen Interest in raising the Standard of Education ,Training, and Management of CardiovascularDiseases in our country.

We the Chancellor ,the Pro-Chancellor ,the members of the Senate and the Management Council ofthe Maharashtra University of Health Sciences , Nashik as an expression of high esteem andrecognition of his noted teaching attainment, bestow upon Dr. G. B. Parulkar, the MarathonTeacher Award for the year 2009.

Jamir, Governor of Maharashtra & Chancellor ofUniversities, Hon'ble Vice Chancellor Dr. (Mrs.) Mrudula Phadke, Members of the Management Council, Members of Senate, Deans Of Faculties & Registrar ofMaharashtra University of Medical Sciences, Hon. Doctorates Of the University on thestage & in the audience, respected Secretary of Maharashtra government, Teachers& Members of Medical Profession, Invited Guests, Ladies & Gentlemen, on this occasion,I wish to thank all the Authorities of the University for bestowing on me this very unique“Marathon Teacher Award”, which I can assure you after a very thorough study of the“Internet & Literature” has never been bestowed on any Teacher anywhere in the Worldso far. Our lives in a way is like Marathon Runners. I started teaching medical students in1956. You may not believe but I had to actually run after my students to catch them &teach them. As time passed, I gradually observed that my students were running after meto request me to teach them but all along I have been running continuously. To remain asa teacher you have to be a lifetime learner. I learned from many sources but maximumfrom my distinguished Teachers & my Students who have spread all over theWorld. Duties of the teacher does not end merely by teaching, training of Medicine but hehas to advise them the importance of their behavior with and creation of confidence intheir patients and provide the students life time guidance, support & most importantinspiration. Sirs, I accept this most distinguished award from M.U. H. S. most humbly andfor which I shall ever remain grateful to the University and I wish to dedicate this awardto all my Almamaters & particularly G. S. Medical College and K.E.M. Hospital &Overseas Medical Universities, to all my Teachers, all my Students spread over theWorld, many of whom are now Teachers & Leaders in Medicine, to all my Colleagues inall Medical Specialties, to my Colleagues in Nursing Profession , Medical Therapies,Medical Technology, Medical Social Service, to all my Patients who gave their lives in myhands, to all my Well Wishers and to all Members of my Family particularly my Parents,Wife, Son, Daughter & their Families without whose support I could not have achievedanything in my life.
