Born in Weehawken, NJ in 1936

BS and PhD from Carnegie Mellon University (1956 and 1960)

Artificial intelligence

“Father of expert systems”

Founding member of Stanford CS department

Artificial Intelligence

“Expert systems” = artificial intelligence that uses knowledge of experts in any field (medical, business, etc.)

Get computers to make theories from data

Explain those data

Make predictions about new data

Coined phrases “Knowledge is power,” “Expert systems”

Feigenbaum’s Research

Research suggestion from Nobel Prize winner Joshua Lederberg: Induce 3D structure of chemicals from their mass spectrograms

Later project could deduce new rules

After chemical structures, Feigenbaum’s lab expanded to medicine, molecular genetics, x-ray crystallography, and pulmonary analysis. Also a “shell” (template) version.
