As a collegiate jumper, Bruce McDaniel was "world-class." As a coach, he's now developing what is potentially "world-class." His first protege, Patrick Holloway of Dawson, was plucked from obscurity, "dunking basketballs" in the gym, and introduced to the world of track for the first time as a high school senior at Terrell County High School. In just one year, the lithe 170-pounder has skyrock­ eted as a potential 7-footer, climbing up over six inches from his best high school mark of 6'2" with consecutive leaps of 6'8" this season.

Unlike his mentor, McDaniel, who is one of the last of the breed of orthodox straddlers in the U.S., Pat is a "flopper." According to his present coach, Bob Cross, he is, potentially a prospect to clear the seven-foot mark in another year (his sophomore season), if he continues to progress by working hard." In doing so, he can etch his name alongside other great ASC 7-foot leapers like McDaniel and Milton Baker.
