COASTLINE COLLEGE HOSTS COMMUNITY TOWN HALL WITH US AMBASSADOR TO VIETNAM DANIEL KRITENBRINK

US Ambassador to Vietnam Daniel Kritenbrink made his first visit to Little Saigon in Orange County, California, on February 19, 2020. The Community Town Hall event was hosted at Coastline College’s Garden Grove campus and organized by four Orange County congressional representatives: Alan Lowenthal, Lou Correa, Harley Rouda, and Katie Porter.

The town hall was an open forum to discuss the future of U.S.-Vietnam economic partnership, the Vietnamese community’s effort to aid in preserving human rights in Vietnam, and answer questions from the Vietnamese community. The town hall was particularly timely, as this year marks the 45th year of the Vietnam War and the 25th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between the United States and Vietnam.

Nearly 200,000 residents of Orange County identify as Vietnamese American. Coastline has embraced, served, and become a part of the Vietnamese community over the past 20 years.

COASTLINE COLLEGE ASSOCIATED STUDENT GOVERNMENT AND CAREER CENTER HOST HEALTHCARE DAY

Coastline College’s Associated Student Government and Career Center collaborated to host a Healthcare Day event at the Newport Beach Campus on Tuesday, February 12.

The morning session was a health community resource fair along with Coastline services that included: National Alliance on Mental Illness, Melinda Hoag Smith Center for Healthy Living, Orange County Asian and Pacific Islander Community Alliance, Cohn Health Institute, and many more. Students interacted with community resource representatives and discovered the various services they can utilize.

The afternoon session consisted of a panel of current and former healthcare practitioners including: a medical doctor (neurosurgeon), registered dietitians, physical therapist, and registered nurse. The panelists shared a wealth of information and valuable experiences with Coastline students.

TONY ALTOBELLI, ORANGE COAST COLLEGE SPORTS INFORMATION DIRECTOR, RECIEVES TOP RECOGNITION FROM STATEWIDE COLLEAGUES The California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) has selected Tony Altobelli as the recipient of this year's Brass Top Award.

Altobelli, who is currently the longest tenured sports information director in Orange Coast College's 72-year history, is closing in on his 14th year at the helm of the College's sports information department. While covering 24 sports with no assistance, which is more than any school has to offer in the state, the veteran SID is tasked with multiple responsibilities such as announcing, stats, music, social media management, feature writing, game management, and much more.

But what sets Altobelli apart from the field is not only his forward thinking, professional nature or his innovation to the craft—it is his ability to step up to the plate and deliver in times of crisis.

When tragedy struck on January 26 and his brother, John Altobelli, was taken from him unexpectedly, he grieved in the best way he could by telling his story. Not hours before Orange Coast baseball's home opener, Tony Altobelli authored an emotional article titled "Dear John…Thank You…Love, Toad." It thanks his legendary brother for being the epitome of what a brother is and setting the standard for success both on and off the diamond. The piece reached 6.8K likes on Facebook. In the midst of his mourning, Altobelli was poised. He wrote a release on the passing of his family members, handled multiple media requests and continued to represent Orange Coast and the SID field in a highly effective manner.

The Brass Top Award is presented annually to someone working in the Sports Information field at the community college level, or to someone working closely with members of the CCCSIA, to recognize outstanding service and accomplishments. Altobelli becomes the 20th recipient of this award.

ADVOCATING FOR OUR STUDENTS AND COMMUNITIES

The Coast District had a small delegation in Washington, D.C., last week. There, we joined with community college colleagues from across the country to advocate for things that directly benefit our students and communities—including greater access and flexibility in financial aid, continued funding of minority-serving and access-expanding programs, and further support of career education.

The trustees and I also regularly meet with our local, state, and federal lawmakers here at home. That relationship building is essential to give power and legitimacy to policy changes we request as a District. It is also important to meet with elected officials and their senior staff in the state’s and nation’s capitals—where policies are actively debated. Adding our voice to that of colleagues also brings a level of urgency that is difficult to achieve when standing alone.

In your time as a member of the Coast District community, you may have the opportunity to participate in a delegation to Sacramento, Washington, D.C., or to the local office of an elected official. I certainly encourage those who can to participate in this type of advocacy. It is enlightening to see the process of policymaking at work.

I would also stress that we are all advocates for the Coast District. Everyday connections with students and communities often reach our policymakers. Your work to ensure that experiences of the Coast District are positive and beneficial allows us to continue advocating for things that will enhance our collective efforts.

Sincerely,

John Weispfenning, Ph. D. Chancellor
