Definition of Academic Advising

“Academic advising is the means by which you assist the student to realize his educational goals and objectives, to meet the academic requirements of the major program, the College and the University, and to understand the relationship between professional and career choices and aspirations and the curriculum and co-curriculum options available at the University”.[1]


The importance of Academic Advising

Student success must be at the core of all institutional work and decision making; therefore, academic advising is critical to the success of higher education. Jayne K. Drake• It’s about building relationships with

our students, locating places where they get disconnected, and helping them get reconnected

• The academic advising has the power in student success and persistence to graduationResearch has found that high percentage of students enter college without having

The Academic Advisor’s main role

A.W. Astin proposed the three main functions of an academic advisor.

1. Advisor as a humanizing agent, whose interaction with students occurs outside the classroom and in an informal setting, so that the student feels comfortable seeking the advisor out.2. Advisor as counselor or mentor, who helps guide students through academic policy and procedure, offers advise and listens, and refers them to support when needed.3. Advisor as educator or instructor, who teaches students strategies for success and helps them understand curriculum, the purpose of their academic program, and encourages problem solving, critical thinking, and decision making [2]

The advisor’s Responsibilities

1. Maintain complete and accurate advisee records and safeguard confidentiality.

2. Get to know advisees as individuals.3. Create an atmosphere of caring and

professional concern for advisees.4. Furnish accurate information

regarding academic policies and procedures.

5. Refer advisees to appropriate campus and/or community resources as needed.

Hang the advisees names list Determine specific time every week for advisingCall advisees for meeting (Once a semester) and

explain them the main policy and procedures, the importance of advising and listen to their general common academic problems.

Specify one advising file for every student. Meet the advisee individually and complete the

advising record form. Advise him and give him detailed information.

By the end of the semester send an advising report to your HOD including the advising process analysis and recommendations.

In order to simplify the advising process, an advising smart software can be used for helping the advisor.

The software has the following specifications:1- It contains the curriculum of the academic program2- It has the ability to show the prerequisite or co-requisite for any course using one click3- The advisor can advise the student for one year in advanced (Fall, spring and summer)4- The software has the ability to show the right sequence of courses that the student should study5- Add, delete and modify of students records.

After approving the software by college, different versions for all other majors will be released.

Conclusions

The advising process is an important for students to help them successfully finished their program and to realize their educational goals and objectives

The advisor is the core of the advising process and communication with advisees is an essential step in the advising process.

The adviser needs to know regulations, procedures and policies in addition to academic knowledge of the curriculum to achieve the advising goals

Using electronic advising and software will simplify the advising process and make it more effective

Academic advisors are an important source of academic advice and information, however, students are fully responsible for their academic decisions, including selecting courses, meeting prerequisites, and adhering to policies, procedures, and deadlines.
