Sydney sees pink for cancer awarenessOur Sydney terminal has been painted pink with helmets, in the name of breast cancer awareness.

Graham Boyd, from our Sydney terminal has raised an impressive $8000 through the sale of the pink safety helmets for the McGrath Foundation, raising awareness for breast cancer.

gain interest, Graham tool boxed his idea and encouraged people to jump on board by purchasing a pink helmet at $20.00 each.

The helmets have been personalised with names and date of issue and retrofitted with hi-vis day and night reflective 3M tape and a safety chin strap to meet our safety standards.

Introducing our Customer Centre

Some of the Customer Centre team from L- R: Anthony Cirillo, Mark Desa, Yadira Guerrero, Calvin Lu, Dee Dee Zhong, Mihailo Cvetojevic, Bryan D’Cruz

As a part of a broader approach to increase service levels, DP World Australia has created Customer Centre to offer personalised and customised services to our customers.

The Customer Centre, based at our Sydney terminal, brings together planning and customer service to deliver a streamlined, transparent customer experience. The service offers a central, first point of contact to resolve requests and issues quickly for our customers and shipping lines.

Get to know our Customer Centre and read about a day in the life of our customer champions and planners.

Dee Dee Zhong, Customer Champion

When did you join DP World Australia?

April 2016

What’s the best thing about your job?

I enjoy the open and direct communication within the team and across functions. This moves things along quickly. Everyone is so professional and always willing to help.

Customer champion is a newly created role to bridge the gap between terminal operations, planning and customers. As there’s no one before me I can copy the behaviours from, there’s less boundaries in the role and with some guidelines and expectations set, I have the ability to set the model of this role and constantly improve it as I grow.

What are some of the challenges in your job?

Well, every customer has their own needs but we will need to find the balance to best suit everyone’s needs and still meet our target.

What do you look forward to at the end of the day?

When it’s home time I look forward to jumping into my other commitment

– family. I try my best to get high score in the work-life balance course. Not to mention all the chores, a delicious dinner and a good book to read in the evening will end the day perfectly.

What’s at the top of your ‘bucket list’?

Learn to play the piano and learn how to write a song.

What advice would you give to someone about to start work at DP World Australia?

Be humble. Listen carefully and ask smartly. Treat every day as your first day and throw your enthusiasm into it.

Anthony Cirillo, National Planning Coordinator

When did you join DP World Australia?

I joined DP World Australia in December 2013.

Why did you join DP World Australia?

After gaining eight years industry experience in freight forwarding (import sea freight, cartage and 3PL Warehouse Operations) I was

seeking further challenges and career advancement. I always aspired to land in a terminal, and was lucky that a position was made available. I have never once looked back!

What’s the best thing about your job?

I love being presented with problems and finding solutions to them. Every shift I am faced with a broad variety of issues and enjoy solving them, it’s a great sense of accomplishment.

What are some of the challenges in your job?

Working in a fast paced, stressful environment has its challenges. Maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail when fatigue sets in can be challenging, especially during unsociable hours.

What do you look forward to at the end of the day?

Coming home to my fiancé and son and reflecting on the achievements gained throughout the day.

What’s at the top of your ‘bucket list’?

Eat at Heston Blumenthal’s three Michelin star restaurant ‘The Fat Duck’ in the UK. I love food!

What advice would you give to someone about to start work at DP World Australia?

Don’t be afraid to reach out to management or colleagues if required, everyone is very approachable and willing to assist.

Thanks to Natasha Chilcott for this gorgeous shot of Melbourne. Share your pics at [email protected]

Message from the Managing Director and CEO, Paul ScurrahIt’s hard to believe we’re entering the second half of the year. As ever, it’s been a busy and productive six months at DP World Australia. The next six are looking to be equally as full.

We’ve been very active in the community around the country this year. Just a few events of note include a small sponsorship of the St Albans Football Club in Melbourne, working with high school students in Tasmania as part of our skills and training commitment to the North-West region, hosting Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea events in Sydney and Melbourne for the Cancer Council, and holding BBQs across the country for Reconciliation Week.

We’ve also held (or will soon hold) Beyond Blue mental health awareness sessions at all locations, in conjunction with our EAP provider, DTC. That we chose to launch our partnership with Beyond Blue during Men’s Health week was no accident. While mental health concerns do not discriminate, statistics

show that on average, five men and two women will take their own lives in Australia, every day. For that reason alone, it’s critical that we break down the stigma attached to depression and anxiety, speak up, and find ways to look out for each other. Awareness sessions will continue throughout the remainder of 2016 to ensure that all employees have the opportunity to benefit from this important initiative that is aligned with our vision to care more.

For more information on how to support a colleague, or to reach for help yourself, I’d encourage you to make use of the services on offer through DTC. The details are on the back page. You can also look up Beyond Blue (beyondblue.org.au).

In business news, it’s been a challenging six months. Major consolidation in shipping lines means shipping prices are at record low levels, and an oversupply of capacity and stevedoring capability at all Australian ports means it’s a buyers’ market. We’re responding

by controlling our costs and by building on our already strong relationships with our customers.

Finally, our online intranet — the People Portal — is being rolled out across the country. I’d encourage you to get online and have a look around, as we’ll keep you up to date with all the latest news in real time. If you have any feedback, please contact me at [email protected].

With gratitude,

Paul Scurrah Managing Director and CEO

DP World education programDP World Australia representatives Stephanie Silva and Mitch Hawkins were in Burnie recently, rolling out the first phase of an education and training program with students from Burnie High School.

Stephanie and Mitch worked with local high schools in the North West region to increase awareness and knowledge on the port, trade and logistics industries.

Stephanie and Nicole Holyer also met with university students from the Australian Maritime College in Launceston, talking about careers in the logistics industry and answering questions about the upcoming DP World Australia internship program.

Launched in March this year, the initiatives form a core part of DP World’s Global Education Programme.

Look up and live

In response to a recent incident where a contractor reefer technician walked under a lid while it was being lowered, the Melbourne team has implemented Look up & Live retractable gates. This is a timely reminder of our cardinal commitments, in particular adherence to exclusion zones and to never position oneself under a suspended load or lift a load over any person.

Project Gravity update

Project Gravity is an engineering lead initiative aimed at providing multi layered solutions to prevent objects falling from cranes and entrenching this in the way we work.

To date the engineering team have completed the following:

• Inspected all cranes and identified additional hard controls that can be implemented to ensure there is always a secondary means of fall prevention.

• Held a prevention focus week during which fall from height prevention actions and awareness training was completed.

• Mandated the use of lanyards on all tools and equipment being used at height of more than three meters above the ground.

• Mandated the use of drop sheets, trays and other measures as required which prevent anything falling and barricading directly below the work area as a last line of defence.

The engineering teams are committed to making Project Gravity a success and as such remain vigilant in identifying additional controls for fall from height prevention and ensuring all items are secured when working at heights.

Lanyards are used to secure tools as part of Project Gravity

Lightbulb moment for BrisbaneChanging the light globes in our Brisbane workshop has achieved a 60 per cent reduction in costs, energy savings and CO₂ impact.

This simple conversion is expected

to save 105,786 kWh per annum

equivalent to 86.7 metric ton of CO₂

per annum.

The replacement of 1000w metal

halide high bay lamps for the latest

LED versions from Dialight has not

only provided great environmental

savings, but ensures the workshop has

consistently higher working light levels

that will not deteriorate over time.

The new LEDs are consistently

delivering above the Australian

Standard minimum of 400 lux. The

main areas of the workshop surveyed

are getting between 500-1500 lux at

ground level and the shuttle bay is

consistently above 1200 lux.

In May, our Sydney and Melbourne terminals participated in the Cancer Council’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea to help support those who are suffering or have suffered from cancer.

Melbourne hosted an international

themed morning tea with delicious

home cooked and bought goods from

the admin and maintenance teams.

A raffle was held with all proceeds going

to the Cancer Council.

On June 1, a barbeque was held across

all three shifts for the operations team

in Melbourne. Combined with National

Reconciliation Week, the barbeque also

celebrated the relationships shared by

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander

people with other Australians.

The events provided a fantastic

opportunity to bring everyone together

to help support and build more

awareness for cancer. So far a total of

$1980.50 has been raised by Melbourne

and $905.65 raised by Sydney – an

amazing effort by both terminals.

Thanks to everyone who helped and

participated to ensure a pleasurable

and fruitful fundraiser for a great cause.

Thank you to Demi Djemal and

Eric Law for this story.

Coming together for morning tea and a good cause

Terminal of the future

Tomorrow’s terminal of the future will be supported by technology (servers, networks, storage and systems) and data that is fault tolerant and replicated to reduce the time it takes to recover from technology failure.

Historically all technology used within DP World Australia has been inside our company network. However, with the advent of the internet, and companies such as Amazon, Google and Microsoft investing huge amounts of time and money into mega data centres and computing power, we can now buy computing services on demand in the same way we buy electricity or telephone services. These services are often referred to as Cloud Services.

We are moving our DP World Australia, People, IT Service and Business Intelligence Portal to the Cloud. Over the next six months, we will move our email and file servers to the Cloud and it is our intention to create a full disaster recovery environment for all of our operational systems in the Cloud over the next 18 months.

In addition to adopting the Cloud we are working with Telstra and Cisco to create a digital port blueprint with the capability to support multi-site business recovery, reliable communications coverage and the easy adoption of future state.

IT Service Portal launch

The IT Service Portal was launched in May. Initial data shows the IT team deal with 300 unique requests per week. Of

the 900 tickets raised so far, 15 were critical, 25 high and the other 860 (95 per cent) were classified as moderate or low priority. It is the intention over the next 12 months to automate the lower priority tasks and free up time to deliver new technology and capability.

35 per cent of the tickets were raised in Port Botany, 26 per cent from SRO, 16 per cent in Melbourne and the remaining 15 per cent in Fremantle and Brisbane. The split of tickets by IT group was 48 per cent Service Delivery, 25 per cent infrastructure and 24 per cent Applications and Information.

Terminal Operating System

We have kicked off a project to upgrade our Terminal Operating system in Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle, to be completed mid-2017. The benefits include bug fixes, new functionality, mobile technology and a foundation to replace end-of-life technology, such as radio servers and Identec (PDS). We will improve the underlying technology (servers/storage) to improve the operational stability and resilience of our Terminal Operating System (TOS). The upgrade is a precursor to taking the TOS to the cloud; however, this is still at least one more major upgrade away.

Get to know Luke WestlakeGeneral Manager Operations (Fremantle)

What were you doing before joining DP World Australia?

I have previously worked for DP World Australia in Brisbane but the last two years I worked for TK Shipping who managed the towage service in Port Hedland Western Australia (for all the East Coasters, that is nowhere near Perth!)

Most recent holiday destination?

As I was in the Pilbara area, I decided to take a trip to Broome and from there visited the Horizontal Falls in Talbot Bay. This was one of the most spectacular environments I have ever witnessed.

How are you finding your new location?

My family and I are loving Fremantle. It has taken a little time to adjust to the cooler climate but we are taking every advantage to explore the local area, cafes and restaurants. There is a great vibe in the area and we have met lots of friendly people, however, we have found it is best just not to mention their football team at the moment.

What is your idea of a great afternoon on your day off?

Definitely somewhere close to the water with sunshine and all of my family together (including the dog). Probably a BBQ or picnic.

HMAS Canberra docks in BrisbaneSomething a little different, our Brisbane terminal had the HMAS Canberra III alongside in March, unloading equipment on its way back from providing disaster relief in Fiji.

Melbourne site expansion opening Our Melbourne terminal welcomed around 100 guests in April to celebrate the opening of our Melbourne terminal expansion, at the former Bentley Chemplax site — including Victorian Minister for Ports, Luke Donnellan and our Board members, Mark Lorkin, Robert Barnes and newcomer, John Fletcher.

Our history, our story, our future National Reconciliation Week 2016Across National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) each terminal hosted a barbeque or morning tea to recognise and celebrate indigenous history and culture in Australia.

Recognising National Reconciliation Week aligns with our intention to focus on building diversity and inclusion at DP World Australia. This intention was solidified in our new Enterprise Agreements, to increase Indigenous representation in our workforce.
