Have you identied the level o

    consequential loss o your operation

in the event o an outage?

    Understanding the risk level and

    translating it into power protection

    availability requirements is essential.

For more than a decade Newave has

been designing high availability andresiliant power protection concepts

to help IT and acility managers to

    easily tailor their power protection

    systems to meet highest availability

    requirements.

    High power protection availability

    is achieved by combining the

    double conversion technology (high

    reliability), advanced redundant

    parallel architecture (high availability)

    and Sae-Swap modular technique

    (premium availability).

    To maintain the premium availability

    in time and hence achieve

    Continuous Power Protection

    Availability, Newave has designed

    NewavewatchTM an advanced,

    maintenance based, Remote

    Monitoring and Management System.

    To achieve near-zero downtime

    and avoid very costly consequences

    o disruption o mission critical

    applications, advanced DecentralizedParallel Architectures providing

    high availability must be employed.

    NEWAVES new second generation

    modular Conceptpower DPATM is

based on a unique Sae-Swap technique

    to provide premium availability.

NEWAVES Decentralized Parallel Architecture (DPA)TM is based

on independent Sae-Swap Modules (SSM) that include virtually

the entire UPS hardware and sotware and hence eliminating all

common parts which are potential single points o ailures. A Sae-

Swap DPA-Module includes distributed CPUS, distributed control

panels, distributed power units and distributed static bypass

switches. The batteries are separately congured or each module.

    NewavewatchTM

    What is Sae-Swap Modularity (SSM)?

    When adding or replacing modules

in a power protection system that

    supplies a mission critical application

it is o paramount importance to

understand how sae it is to perorm

    this very delicate operation?

    A Modul is Saf-Sappabl if:

    It is hot-swappable, meaning

hot insertion or hot removal o

modules rom a host system by

    means o plugs or connectors

    without removing the power to

    the load

    It is replaceable without transer-

ring the load to raw mains

    (true Hot-Swap, no downtime,

    no risk)

It is designed or easy and

    sae swapping (secure module

isolation rom rest o the system),

    meaning the replacement or

    scaling is achieved without any

    risk o manipulation errors that

may cause damage to the module,

system or even cause a load

    crash.

    NEWAVES unique Sae-Swap

    ModularTechnique is a true Sae-

    Swap modular concept that allows

    easy (plug-and-play) scaling and/or

    replacing o modules whilst the

load continues to be supplied by

sae UPS power. The load must not

    be transerred to unreliable raw

mains or even be interrupted. This

is unique and perectly responds to

    todays data centre requirements

    where planned computer shutdowns

    are becoming a rarity.

    A common misconception o a UPSis that it is a commission-and-

    orget solution. UPS units are

    complex equipments and however

    well designed and manuactured they

    require regular maintenance and

monitoring in order to maintain the

    highest availability o your power

    protection system and hence not

allow to compromise the uptime o

    mission-critical applications.

To ensure early recognition oanomalies and short recovery times

    NEWAVE has developed an advanced

    Remote Monitoring and Management

    System NewavewatchTM to tackle the

anomalies at an early stage and beore

    they cause more important

consequences or even downtimeso mission-critical applications.

    NewavewatchTM has a unique

    redundant communication option by

means o modem, GSM or through

    the internet.

    WATCH represents the integration

    o an eective UPS management

and service that should be regarded

as an essential element o a power

    protection solution. Mission critical

systems require constant availability othe power protection inrastructure.

    Continuous monitoring in the orm

    o NewavewatchTM is an aordable

    insurance policy designed to detect

and warn o problems beore they

    become a crisis.

NEWAVEs expert engineers atthe Master (Switzerland) or Local

Service Centre are always at hand to

    help diagnose and resolve problems,

    quickly and eciently.

    Why is TCO so important?

Low losses at partial loads will result in major energy savings

UPS systems operate 24h a day and

365 days a year and during more

    then 10 years.

The Total Cost o Ownership (TCO)

o a UPS System during its liecycle

is typically a multiple o the initial

investment cost o the UPS system.

    The major impact on TCO

    have ollowing parameters:

    UPS eciency at partial/ull load;

    Cooling system eciency;

    Rightsizing the system power over

    time;

    Adding power without need o

    additional foor space;

    Input PF and THDi.

The major impact on the lie-cycle

cost o a UPS system is generated

by the operating losses. The emitted

heat in data centres must be

    evacuated by appropriate cooling

systems that also generate losses and

    hence increase the overall operating

    losses.

    In redundant UPS congurations

    single modules operate at partial

loads typically at 40-60% o the rated

    UPS power.

    Conceptpower DPATM with its

    unique Energy Saving Inverter

    Switching (ESIS) technique has been

    designed to provide high eciencies

at partial and at rated loads. The

    diagram below shows Conceptpower

DPATM fat eciency curve with high

eciencies even at very low partial

    loads.

Thanks to the ability o true modular

UPS systems to easily scale power,

it is possible to add power as the

    data centre power requirements

grow. This eliminates the high initial

    investment cost o purchasing power

capacity that is not required at the

stage o installation and hence it

helps avoid waste due to over sizing.

In addition, the correct sizing o the

    power protection system during the

entire lie-cycle helps keep the totalcost o ownership low.

    The unique Conceptpower DPATM

    modular design with Sae-Swap

    modules guarantees sae power

    upgrading without the need o

    removing the power nor transerring

    the load to raw mains.

Power capacity can be added up to

200kW (250kVA) in one single rack

    without increasing the oot-print. I

    the power requirements grow above

200kW additional racks can be added

to provide up to 800kW (900kVA)power.

    Thanks to the advanced transormer-

less design the modules are very

compact in size and weight. Up to 5

    modules can be accommodated into

    a single space-saving rack reaching

highest power density o up to

    342kW/m2.

    Blade servers have leading power

    actors and thereore require adequate

    UPS power.

    Conceptpower DPATM provides ull

rated power in the range o 0.9-leading

    to 0.8-lagging power actors. Thus

saving valuable data centre foor space.

The reduction o the material contents

results in saving o natural resources

    and decreases the environmental

    impact.

In addition, the compact size o the

    modular Conceptpower DPATM

    saves packaging weight and decreases

    substantially energy consumption in

    transport to customers.
