great holiday finds One of the advantages of living in Jersey City all of the public transportation available to New York City, but don’t let our

glitzy neighbor to the east outshine the superb shopping offerings right at home.

When it comes to buying gifts for the holidays, Jersey Cityis home to many independently owned boutiques and terrificrestaurants.

The downtown shopping district along Grove Street andNewark Avenue is, for instance, home to small specialty shopsthat cater to the neighborhood’s well-heeled Wall Street work-ers. Grove Street – which boasts jewelers, accessories shops,home furnishing stores, and other retailers – offers the ease ofone-stop shopping. With the holiday season now in full swing,most of these stores have special deals to move merchandiseoff the shelves by Dec. 24.

Shoppers looking for unique gifts for pets or babies can visitthe Grove Street strip before stocking up on fine wine andspirits for those upcoming holiday social gatherings.

For that one-of-a-kind gift for the fashionista who has every-thing, visit Jersey City’s Powerhouse District, a residential/artsarea adjacent to the Newark and Grove corridors. The areafeatures several lifestyle and personal care boutiques that sellchic apparel for women and men. While the shops in this areaare spread out, their selections are worth the hunt.

Despite the huge amount of foot traffic from residents andcommuters in the neighborhood, Nikol Floros, executivedirector of the Historic Downtown Special ImprovementDistrict (HDSID), said the locals often overlook the commer-cial gems hidden in this community.

“You know, when people think of ‘downtown,’ they some-times assume it only covers the waterfront.”said Floros.“Downtown really isn’t just the waterfront. I think people for-get about the businesses on Newark, Jersey, Montgomery andGrove. Ultimately, we want people to remember that they cando a lot of their shopping right here along the Newark andJersey corridor. We want people to remember to support thesesmall, independent mom and pop businesses.”

To attract more foot traffic to the area, the HDSID has thisyear stepped up efforts to lure more customers to the neigh-borhood. In September the organization hosted the All AboutDowntown Street Fair, and on November 28 it hosted its firstannual tree lighting ceremony in Grove Plaza.

Floros said such initiatives are meant to keep local dollars inthe community, and in the hands of independent storeownerswho live in the neighborhood.

And since all that time store-hopping can work up a fierceappetite, be sure to plan a time out at one of the area’s numer-ous watering holes.
