things are heating up and now that the official planting season is upon us, there is excitement for the 2nd annual explosion of fresh food in the Public Produce Garden.

the kamloops food Policy Council in partnership with the thompson shuswap Master Gar-deners received a grant from the interior Health Authority (iHA) to create a Public Produce Garden on a vacant lot donated by a private de-veloper. A Public Produce Garden differs from a Community Garden in that food is grown on true public space such as parks, plazas, town squares or along the street making the produce accessible to all. the grant was given by the iHA in order to address and explore food security in the city of kamloops. this proj-ect has grown to be a huge commu-nity builder with many businesses and volunteers making it a reality.

The first Public Produce garden-ing workshop ‘Planting Your Veg-gie Garden’ was a great success. the next workshop is ‘All About soil’, with Master Gardener and soil expert Leslie welch which is all about - the soil! Learn what soil is and what you need to grow healthy

plants. You will also learn how to amend soil and build good soil structure. two dates are booked for this workshop, wednesday, June 13, 5:00 pm at 121 Victoria st and thursday, June 14, 5:00 pm at the new edible demonstration garden in Mcdonald Park. other exciting workshops lined up for this sum-

mer are ‘organic Growing Prac-tices’, ‘Cooking from the garden’. other potential subjects include ‘raised bed gardening’ for kids and ‘Medicinal Herbs’.

A site Leader volunteer posi-tion requires filling for the summer months at the Victoria street gar-den. the role requires a 2 to 4 hour/

week commitment, involving coor-dinating volunteers and keeping an eye on the weed and water status of the garden.

if you require more information, you are interested in being a site Leader or if you have an idea for a workshop, please contact [email protected]

Public produce partnerships make for fresh ideas

ly endless energy, Le ragazze will draw you into the passion that is italy.

the outdoor venue will offer live entertainment, de-licious food, fun games for the kids and an open mar-ket. Casual, fun games of Bocce Ball, a regular fixture at italian picnics will round out saturday’s outdoor festivities. on saturday night, the community will en-joy a sumptuous, multi-course traditional dinner and be entertained with live music and authentic italian dancers. tickets are $50 and available in advance at the Colombo Lodge, 814 Lorne st, or at the Hair spe-cialists, #5-177 tranquille rd.

sunday’s lineup of events will further distinguish italian roots with events inside the Columbo Lodge. enthusiasts will have the opportunity to linger over displays of italian memorabilia and artistry that speaks of italian folklore, sports, traditional wine making practices as well as engaging in learning about pasta

and sausage made by hand through demonstrations. the indoor stage will again feature both local and na-tional musical artists and performers.

festa d’italia coordinator August scerbo praised the tireless efforts of all the volunteers involved and promises a weekend synonymous with good times.

during these moments of leisure, the italian com-munity will distinguish itself by maintaining certain customs and rituals. the interaction of multiple gen-erations expressing how they understand themselves - where they come from and who they are - is what keeps a culture together and traditions alive. this shared community celebration is a place for local de-scendants to cultivate solidarity while non-italians can consume this distinct (and delicious!) way of life.

the level of civic participation will be immense and the Columbo Lodge is sure to be a packed house of lo-cals celebrating la vita è bella - the beautiful life.

Cap team provides a walk to rememberAs another summer kicks off with a suc-

cessful spring festival, the CAP team is again back in full gear on the downtown streets. one of the services the CAP team provides throughout the summer is a walk-ing tour to the rocky Mountaineer Guests as they make their stopover in kamloops.

Last week we had our first tour of the sum-mer and while it may not have felt like sum-mer yet with the cold breeze and rain pour-ing, the tour went on. we had a great turnout of participants who had nothing but interest in the rich history of downtown kamloops and all it has to offer. downtown is decorated with many plaques detailing its history but it is the many stories that

go beyond these facts that really bring it to life. the history of the area is immense and unless someone is there to point it out, much of it can go missed by the tourists in their short visit to our wonderful city.

with much positive feedback our first tour of the year was a great success, and it couldn’t have ended any better with an outstanding picture taking opportunity of the suns decent, turning the valley and river into an even more breathtaking view. we are excited as a team to be offering rocky Mountain guests this opportunity and being

able to share with them as much history as we can fit into our one hour tour.

Winners named for local independent short filmsthe kamloops film society an-

nounced the Juried Prize winners for the 5th kamloops independent short short (kiss) film festival follow-ing a public screening held thursday, May 17 at the Clocktower Auditori-um at thompson rivers university. the “short short” in the kiss name connotes the temporal nature of the competition entries, which must be five minutes in duration or less.

A 1st prize of $500 was awarded for “supervillain” by dusan Magdo-len. dusan, who has been submitting a short film in the KISS Competition for five years, took the top honour for the first time.

the echo’s own editor, Jody tip-pett, moonlighting as a filmmaker, earned herself $250 for her anima-tion “so Long Holly” which took second place. kelly Aulin placed third with his short titled, “Com-

mittee. A Youth Prize, for filmmak-ers 18 years and under, was awarded for “the Letter”, by kora Vanderlip. two special Jury Prize were also awarded. The first for Mise En Scene went to kora Vanderlip, for her ar-rangement of scenery, while a prize for editing was awarded to igor kos-tin for “unbreakable”.

following the screenings, the au-dience had the opportunity to vote for their favourite and “supervil-lain” was once again recognized. igor kostin and bruno Mazzotta were each awarded the tnrd short film Award at the kamloops film society’s kamloops independent short shorts (kiss) film festival. the prize, worth $150, was given to short films that best depict a place, person or attraction in the tnrd in an interesting and compelling way. “kostin and Mazzotta should be

commended for their original, and very different, takes on what they find fascinating about the Thomp-son-nicola regional district,” said Vicci weller, executive director of the thompson-nicola film Com-mission. A special mention went to Archie and Chayla wilcox of Chase, who produced and directed the ani-mated message film Under Pressure about the need to recycle to help save the planet. while the anima-tion is cute and funny, and the film is an overall delight, the message is strong, according to weller.

the kamloops film society stages an annual kiss competition, which is open to film entries from all inde-pendent filmmakers living in Kam-loops and the surrounding region of interior bC as part of its mission to support and encourage local film-making.

unexpected knowledge gained from the movies

Sorry to bother you, my friend

A double order of heaven or hell?

An actor in Hollywood phones another actor friend whom he hasn’t spoken to in a while to see how he’s doing. “i’m doing great!” his friend replies. “in fact, i couldn’t be better! My agent has been sending me out every day, i

just finished shooting a national commercial and it looks like i’m a shoe-in for a regular on a new sit-com this fall!” “oh gosh, i’m sorry”, says the first actor. “i’ll call you back when you don’t have company.”

An actor dies and appears before st. Peter, who tells him that he will have to labour for the souls of others for 15 billion years in pur-gatory or go straight to hell. the actor asks if he can see heaven and hell before he makes his decision.

down they go into hell. it turns out to be a steamy, dungeon-like kitchen in which actors toil away shouting food orders while cooks swear at them and threaten them with kitchen knives and a hulking maitre de tells them to “Hurry, hurry, hurry!”

“no,” screams the actor, “that’s what my life was like! show me heaven!”

up they fly to heaven. it turns out to be a steamy, dungeon-like kitchen in which actors toil away shouting food orders while cooks swear at them and threaten them with kitchen knives and a hulking maitre de tells them to “Hurry, hurry, hurry!”

“this is the same as hell,” the actor protests.

“oh no. not all,” st. Peter replies. “these actors have agents.”

Government invests in Seniors’ projects throughout our region

Seniors across the nation will soon have new opportunities to volunteer, mentor younger generations and help raise awareness of elder abuse thanks to funding through the New Horizons for Seniors Program.

Cathy McLeod, Member of Parliament for Kamloops Thompson Cariboo made the announcement that seven New Horizons for Seniors programs will begin throughout the riding for a total of $134,142. McLeod made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finely, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, and the Honourable Alice Wong, Minister of State (Seniors).

“Our government recognizes the diversity of skills, knowledge and experience that seniors contribute to our society and the econo-my,” said McLeod. “Through initiatives such as the New Horizons for Seniors, we are helping to ensure that seniors maintain a high quality of life and continue as active, participating members of their communities.”

Projects in the Kamloops region include: “Elders Tanning our Hides Program” at the Interior Indian Friendship Centre, in which seniors will engage in mentoring others in their community by teaching youth the skills of hide tanning.

“Secwepemc Elders & Youth Cultural Mentoring Initiative” sponsored by the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council. Seniors will vol-unteer as mentors to youth within the Secwepemc community by elders teaching traditions and culture to the youth and community members.

Renovations and improvements to the Maple Room at the North Shore Community Centre. The organization will renovate their kitchen and appliances to continue to support social participation and inclusion of seniors with dinners, exercises, and educational workshops.

“Storytelling / Legacy Book:Transferring Traditional Knowledge Through Sharing Memories Project” sponsored by the Secwepemc Cultural Education Society. The organization will engage seniors in the community by facilitating with band elders to mentor youth in cultural activities and the production of a legacy book.

Since its beginning, the New Horizons for Seniors Program has funded more than 10,400 projects in hundreds of communities across Canada. This year, the government will provide more than $35.6 million
