It was the Urban Systems Foundation who originally ap- proached Sydney Griffith, the principal of Stuart Wood, with an idea to create a gathering place for the community. Griffith thought immediately of Aziz. The two had worked together in the past and Aziz’s background in visual arts, her master’s in painting, and her position as a teacher at Beattie School of the Arts made her a clear choice. Planning was an evolutionary process, as Aziz describes: “The whole project went on a journey, so it is fitting that the final design is about a curious barn owl who goes on a jour- ney following a ribbon that becomes our river, our hills, our streets, and our community.” Griffith firmly believes that there is a spirit to public art. Her ideal of creating a space that will give a passersby a lift and a smile and invite them to use the space was achieved. During the cleaning, priming, and painting process, about 30 volunteers assisted Aziz in her work, which spanned over only three weeks be- cause of weather conditions. Lisa Clark, an Ur- ban Systems employee involved with the project from the start, recounts how when she and her children were helping paint, one of them “pulled people off the street” to have them help. Expertise was no requirement, and Heather MacKnee, a volunteer from Urban Systems, ad- mits openly, “I am not an artist!” but her will- ingness to try and learn was precisely what Aziz sought to recruit. In Revillard’s words, “I think the wall around the court symbolized a mental wall for the com- munity…Now that it is vibrant, [the space] will get utilized by neighbours more.” Clark agrees, “As the space is beautified, more people will use it.” She sees this mural as the start of different initiatives that will bring more life to the community. Diane Hallam, another representative from the Urban Systems foundation, reflects on the ac- complishment: “It was empowering to work on it,” she says. Revillard continues, “We don’t get a lot of opportunities to participate in something like this that often, and I am glad that I could do something to give back.” Together with others from the Urban Systems Foundation, the Stuart Wood community, and local businesses like General Paint who donat- ed supplies, Clark is planning a grand opening and plaque reveal for September once the school year resumes. bC’s disaster Financial assistance program (dFa) helps those impacted by a disaster cope with the cost of repairs and recovery from uninsurable disas-ter-related property damage. Kamloops residents who were
impacted by the recent flooding may apply for financial assis-tance. dFa helps to replace or restore essential items and prop-erty that have been destroyed or damaged to pre-disaster condi-tion.

Beach and boat launch reopen
Call to reserve your seat for the free screening of the film West Wind: The Vision of Tom Thomson at the Kamloops art gallery on Thursday, august 2.
premiering at the Vancouver international Film Festival in october 2011, the film examines the life and work of Tom Thomson. notoriously private, Thomson’s life often overshadows his art, primarily due to his untimely and
often mythologized death. Co-directed by Michèle hozer and peter raymont, the film provides an in-depth look into the artist’s practice and features paintings that were not available for public viewing prior to the release of this film.
Doors open at 6:30 pm and the film begins at 7:00pm. all ages are welcome and complimentary popcorn and water will be provided.
with river levels continuing to recede, the City of Kamloops reopened the riverside park swimming area and commenced lifeguard service on saturday, July 28.
Lifeguard service is available from 1:00 to 5:00 pm daily, weather and conditions permitting, until september 2. when lifeguards are on duty, the City recommends that swimmers stay within the buoy lines and always keep young children within arm’s reach.
an automated external defibrillator (aed) unit is located in the riverside Lifeguard office and will be available during lifeguard on-duty hours. in the event of a medical emergency, call 911 and immediately alert the lifeguards.
after some minor repairs and thorough inspection, the City of Kamloops reopened the Thompson drive boat launch in Valleyview. The boat launch had experienced some damage due to the recent high waters of the south Thompson river. as the river level receded, the City was able to make repairs to a damaged section of asphalt, and the launch is now better defined for the loading and unloading of boats and ready for use by the public.

The Kamloops Museum and archives is com-piling artwork and essays by Kamloops youth to be published in a new book titled “a Children’s history of Kamloops” in com-memoration of Kamloops’ bicentennial.
The Museum is currently looking for youth under 18 to apply their chosen topic to be included in this publication. Local history topics include, but not limited to: the establishment of the fur trade in Kamloops; or the lives and impor-tance of John Fremont-smith or Chief nicola; or a story about your very own family’s link to Kamloops history. submissions can be of any size, using paint,
wax crayon or felt markers, with a 100 to 500 word written description and/or essay accompanying the
artwork on their chosen, approved topic.

ribfest is hungry for volunteersThis august, Kamloops will be
hosting the first ever ribfest at riverside park and this fun, family-style event, put on by the daybreak rotary Club of Kamloops, is in need of volunteers to ensure its success.
“we’re extremely excited to bring this event to Kamloops from august 10 to 12,” says rotarian and ribfest committee member Jennifer McKinney. “ribfest will take place in riverside park provid-ing Kamloops residents and visitors alike with a weekend of free family fun in conjunction with hot nite in the City.”
ribfest will see five champion bbQ teams coming to Kamloops to compete for bragging rights and
people can purchase ribs to enjoy themselves. The rest of the weekend includes free entertainment such as live music and a fun zone. “This is the first event of its kind for Kamloops,” says sandra blair, Chair of Kamloops ribfest.
“There’s been a lot of time and effort put into this event by daybreak rotarians. we’re looking now to the community of Kamloops to step up and volunteer to ensure the suc-
cess of this event. whether you can donate and hour of time or more, we have a job for pretty much anyone.”

Allen was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and has spent most of his life residing in regions such as the United Kingdom, West Africa and the Lower Mainland. Allen has been calling Kamloops home for the past eight years and has recently acquired a Bachelor of Fine Arts from trU. In the true nature of contemporary art, Allen dedicates himself to thinking outside the box to create combinations in his work that invoke interest.
he constructs these combinations by mixing mediums such as etching, relief, acrylic, oil, sculpture, installation, drawing, photography, craft and performance. the objective of his art making is to reflect the perspectives of society in dynamic

Ben eastabrook is a local artist who moved to Kamloops in 2001. he graduated from thompson rivers University with his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2011 and currently works as the administrative assistant at Arnica Artist run Centre.
typically his artwork depicts a variety of interests, such as toys, mythology, hybrid creatures, and apocalyptic phenomenons. Lately, the bulk of his work are creatures that come to fruition through the assemblage of hacked up toys being arranged, and rearranged, to form new species. these creatures evolve to be either realistic, absurd, or a bit of both.

While working behind the lens, Linda can become so absorbed in the process that she loses all awareness of time, her environment, and the people around her. on Thursday, august 16, gardengate will celebrate 13 years of “Growing Food, growing Futures” during its ninth annual summer salsa Challenge! past and present par-ticipants, volunteers and staff will be joined by local com-munity service providers and Kamloops residents to celebrate over a decade of hard work and friendship.
From 12:30 to 3:00pm, gardengate welcomes everyone to drop-in and sample salsas from over 12 community teams and
cast their vote for the people’s Choice and Team spirit awards. There will be plenty more fun to be had including yoga sessions, garden tours, live entertainment and plenty of opportunities to catch up with old and new friends.
