  • ALTMAN SERVICE & PARTS MANUAL About this manual This comprehensive manual was designed for dealers and users of Altman Stage Lighting products to assist in identifying parts and assemblies, and for identifying assembly sequences where possible. The line drawings that are in this manual are the same as those that our production staff uses to identify parts during the production and assembly processes.

This manual can be used to: • Identify and order parts for replacement and repair. • Clarify the assembly sequence of parts when making repairs. • Select spare parts for repair departments. • Troubleshoot. • Reference.

New in this release This manual is a complete reprinting of the Altman Stage Lighting, Co. Inc. Service & Parts Manual Release 3.1 printed in September 2001. It includes all updates and revision that have been issued since the first release in 1996 and is intended to replace your entire Service & Parts manual. Altman Stage Lighting no longer prints the Service & Parts Manual for distribution. The Service & Parts manual is only available in Adobe Acrobat *.pdf format available on CD-ROM and on the internet at http://www.altmanltg.com This Service & Parts Manual was created using multiple software packages, and is published in Adobe Acrobat *.PDF format (portable document format). In order to view *.pdf documents, you must have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. • Organization of this manual This manual is organized into sections, sub-sections, and pages. Section 1 contains general information and quick reference tables. Sections 2-11 contain product line drawings and associated part numbers. The product families are listed on the left bookmark navigation screen in your adobe acrobat reader. You may toggle between a full view and the navigation pane by using the F5 function key. Sections are further broken down into sub-sections where needed. The numbering format is: Section/Sub-section/Page# Example: 360Q drawings consist of 4 drawings:

3.3.1 Body Assembly 3.3.2 Lens Assemblies 3.3.3 Socket Cap Assembly 3.3.4 Speed Cap Assembly

Section 3 is for ellipsoidals, sub-section 3 is 360Q, and then the page/drawing number. This number method allows for easy addition and removal of pages in future releases.

Quick reference tables The end of section 1 contains quick reference tables for common replacement parts like lenses, sockets, and reflectors. The quick reference tables also include assemblies where available. These tables eliminate the need to search through many line drawings for commonly replaced parts.

Product Information sheets Information sheets are at the beginning of each product section and are there to assist you with common ordering questions particular to that section or sub-section. These sheets contain the latest information from the factory in respect to current manufacturing techniques, obsolete parts, and general information.

Line drawings This manual contains line drawings for the products that we currently manufacture. Wherever possible, drawings have been reduced to fit on a standard 8.5″ x 11″ sheet of paper to make faxing and photocopying easier. Some products will cover many sheets, but will always be broken down into some logical order. Some parts and their numbers are shown for manufacturing purposes only and may only be ordered as a complete assembly. All line drawings in this manual are of current production, and may not exactly match the products in the field.

Prices The prices for replacement parts are separate from this manual and are available from any Altman Stage Lighting dealer, the Altman Stage Lighting web site, or by contacting Altman Stage Lighting directly. All prices are subject to change without notice.

Purchasing spare parts Altman Stage Lighting sells finished products & parts through an authorized dealer network. To locate an authorized dealer, you may visit the Altman Stage Lighting web site, or, call our customer service department at (914)-476-7987, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, EST Monday-Friday. In addition to purchasing parts from out dealer network, you may also order replacement parts directly from the factory. Parts are sold at the retail published price, and may ordered via fax, mail, or phone. There is an order form at the end of this first section that you may copy and use to order replacement parts. A major credit card is required for these orders, and additional terms are on the order form.

  • Availability Most parts in this manual are available for prompt delivery. However, we suggest that you expect at least a two week lead time when ordering parts due to our production schedule system, and certain parts that are not standard stocked items may have lead times of up to six weeks.

Warranty on parts Altman Stage Lighting offers a one year warranty on parts that it manufactures. On parts that we do not manufacture such as sockets, glass, ballasts, ignitors, electronics, etc..., we will gladly extend the same warranty that we are given by our vendors.

Interchangeable parts As noted on the inside front cover of this manual, we do not guarantee parts availability or the exact fit of parts due to continuous product improvement. It is common for tooling to wear over its useful life and eventually must be replaced. Some of the parts in this manual will function in other manufacturer’s luminaires. Generally, sockets and lenses are interchangeable.

Disclaimer Altman Stage Lighting will be continually updating this Service & Parts Manual. Therefore, all part numbers, descriptions, and prices are subject to change without notice. It is not advisable at this time to reprint any of the information contained in this publication for promotional materials.

Injection molded parts Altman Stage Lighting has installed an Arburg injection-molding machine to produce molded plastic parts at our facility in Yonkers, NY. With this machine we have been producing many small plastic components such as knobs, shutter blade grips, followspot color changer parts, and more. You may notice slight differences when receiving these new parts. Most notably, we have consolidated several types of 10-32 and ¼-20 knobs into a standard Altman style. We have been slowly incorporating these changes into our production lines and discontinuing the older styles of knobs.

Screws, washers, & nuts standardized Altman has standardized most of the common hardware, such as screws, washers, & nuts. The standard screw that Altman uses will be a Phillips Pan Head with Internal SEMS washer, Zinc Plated (PSP). The Hex Nuts will now be KEPPS style machine screw nuts Zinc Plated. We will eventually eliminating all Flat Washers & Split Lock Washers where possible. There is a chart on page 33 of this section that describes the new part numbering schema. Most line drawings will depict the old style arrangement. Altman may substitute fasteners where appropriate. Most assembly drawings do not illustrate where rivets are used. When ordering parts, rivets are not supplied and must be purchased in bulk or in sets. Most Altman products use standard hardware that can be found at local hardware stores or other sources.

Paint and other finishes When ordering parts, the parts may or may not be painted depending on where in the manufacturing process the painting takes place. In most cases, parts will be painted, but Altman Stage Lighting does not guarantee that parts you receive will be painted or match the finish of the part that is being replaced.

Testing laboratory labels and listings Underwriters Laboratories dictates that UL labels may ONLY be applied in the facility where the item was originally manufactured. For that reason, Altman cannot supply or send UL labels to another location for application. However, if you need a UL label replaced for any reason, the item in question can be sent to our factory for labeling, provided the item still meets all of the current UL standards for labeling. In circumstances where it is not possible or feasible to return the item to our facility, arrangements can be made for a UL Field Inspection. This policy also applies to MET, ETL, and CE labels.

  • UNDERSTANDING PART NUMBERS Altman part numbering system Altman has implemented a six-digit part number system that replaces the old alpha-numeric part numbering system. In the new numeric system, the first two digits identify the part category, followed by a dash, and the following four digits identify the item in that category. There will always be 2 numbers followed by a dash and then numbers and/or letters. Numbers on line drawings may show an additional 2 digits, which are finish numbers, and should be added to part numbers when ordering. Example: Part Number: XX-XXXX-XX Example: P/N Description 06-0061-10 .250”OD x .35” WALL SMLS 304 BUNDIE TUBE 21’ LENGTH 06-0061-25 #F3 .250” GUIDE ROD 4.125” L 06-0061-30 #F4 .250” GUIDE ROD 5.150” L 06-0061-35 #FP POLE OP FOCUS FITTING TUBE .250” x .178” x 1.75” LENGTH The above items are manufactured from a 21’ length of .250” tube number 06-0061-10. (This -10 number is not in the price list because it is a purchased item by Altman only and is not resold). We use this 21’ length to manufacture a variety of items that all have different lengths and finishes, therefore they require different finish numbers. Other areas where you will find these additional 2 digits are for extruded aluminum items, die-cast items, and sand-cast items. Note for Cast items: When ordering a die-cast or sand-cast part and the part number has a -10 after it (XX-XXXX-10) the part is in its raw form and may not have any holes or paint finish applied. Example: 12-0070-10 #SKYCYC CENTER DIVIDER The above example does not have holes or paint applied because these dividers are held into place with self-drilling screws and then the entire fixture body is painted as one unit. Cast items that have a -21,-22, -25 or higher suffix are generally completed castings that have all of the required holes in place and have been completed to a sub-assembly form.

Pre-packaged sets Numbers starting with 97- are pre-packaged sets. This makes ordering a series of related replacement parts easier when there is no sub-assembly part number.

    Item Number

    Part Category

    Finish Number (if needed)

  • Sub-assembly part numbers Sub-assemblies that are manufactured and stocked use the category numbers 70 through 79 and are then followed by a 4 digit item number. The drawing below illustrates how sub-assembly part numbers are used.

#65 6” Fresnel Detail Drawing In the above illustration, notice P/N Description 71-0011 #65/65Q Front Lens Holder Assembly There are two different numbers above the 71-0011 sub-assembly part numbers. The number 22-0048 is a spinning and number 20-0129 is a color frame holder. When these two parts are joined together in the manufacturing process, the new part number becomes 71-0011. The general rule is that when one number appears on top of another number, the bottom number is the next assembly that the top number goes into during the manufacturing process.

Ordering assemblies with no part number Assemblies such as lens holders and cap assemblies are sold complete with the hardware needed to use the assembly if they are listed in the reference tables further into this section. For those not listed in the tables, order all the components needed separately as illustrated in the example below. Example: To order a lens assembly for a #65 6″ Fresnel with the lens, spring retaining ring, front assembly and hinge hardware you would need to place the order as follows: Qty. P/N Description 1 34-1005 Spring Ring 1 18-1002 6″ Fresnel lens 1 71-0011 #65/65Q Front Lens Holder Assembly 1 06-0371 #65/65Q Hinge Pin 2 31-HA08 8-32 Acorn Cap Nut Note: When ordering by part numbers as in the above example, Altman Stage Lighting does not guarantee that desired parts will be assembled before shipment.

  • CARE & MAINTENANCE OF LUMINAIRES About lamps

    1. To avoid any possibility of electric shock, disconnect the equipment from the power supply before removing and/or installing the lamp.

    2. Articles fabricated from quartz/glass are inherently fragile and there is a remote possibility of a lamp shattering if

subjected to mechanical shock, thermal shock or abrasion. Unless directed to do so, inserting the lamp into the holder by holding the bulb could cause mechanical breakage of the envelope/seal. For you safety, install by holding the lamp base and always use eye protection.

    3. Oils/grease or handling of the quartz envelopes may contaminate the surface on operation and reduce performance. If the quartz is handled, clean before operation with a soft, clean, lint-free cloth moistened with methylated spirits (denatured alcohol).

    4. Avoid improper operation of the lamp, e.g., operating the lamp at a voltage higher than the lamp is rated for or at improper burn angles. Non-observance may damage the lamp or equipment.

    5. In operation, the lamp - a) Develops a high internal pressure and could shatter. b) Develops a high surface temperature. c) May cause UV irritation to skin and eyes on prolonged direct exposure.

Use appropriate screening for people and surrounding. Avoid operation in proximity to combustibles. Allow lamp to cool before attempting replacement.

Lenses During normal use, lenses collect a dirty film and should be cleaned for optimum performance. Cleaning can best be accomplished with soap and hot water or other glass cleaning solution, and a soft, clean, lint-free cloth. Care should be taken so that the cleaning process does not leave a film on the surface of the lens, since the heat from the light beam will bond the film to the surface of the lens. Be careful not to remove the black painted rings on stepped lenses. Be careful not mix the lenses during the cleaning process.

Reflectors The reflectors of luminaires should be cleaned periodically as a dirty film may collect on their surfaces, sacrificing optimum performance. Before cleaning, the lamp should carefully be removed from the luminaire. Extreme caution should be taken to not scratch or deform the reflector in any way. To clean, use a soft, clean, lint-free cloth moistened with methylated spirits (denatured alcohol) and then polish with a dry, soft, clean, lint-free cloth.

Mechanical Mechanical parts such as sliding lens tubes, lock down hardware, and clamps should be maintained using a commercial cleaner such as WD-40. Use commercial fine power graphite for lubricating shutter and iris mechanisms.

Electrical Inspect all wiring and connectors frequently for discoloration, loose connections, and cracking. Replace any questionable wires and/or connectors. Remove the lamp (power off of course) and inspect base and pins of lamp for signs of arcing. Replace sockets if necessary.

  • LAMP SHAPES & TYPES Incandescent lamps Below are common bulb (envelope) shapes and base types used in theatrical, TV, film, and photographic lighting fixtures. Incandescent lamps are standard tungsten filament in a nitrogen-argon gaseous medium, enclosed in a glass envelope. Lamps of this type are a lower cost initially, but they have short operating life and tend to blacken on the inside of the envelope with usage. Many of the older popular incandescent lamps are now available in Tungsten-Halogen quartz.

Tungsten-Halogen “Quartz” lamps Below are common bulb shapes and base types used in theatrical, TV, film, and photographic lighting fixtures. Formerly referred to as Quartz-Iodine, these lamps have a tungsten filament in a nitrogen-argon gaseous medium to which bromine has been added, enclosed in an envelope generally made from quartz. Lamps of this type are somewhat more expensive initially, but have an operating life span of 2-3 times that of standard incandescent lamps. These lamps do not blacken with age therefore producing uniform light emission throughout their life.

  • LAMP CODES & ABBREVIATIONS Non-ANSI coded lamps All lamps have a code number, which is descriptive of the particular lamp type, including the size, shape, and wattage. In any lamp code, the first number is the wattage, the letters indicate the shape of the lamp envelope, the next number following the letter is the diameter of the envelope at its widest point and is measured in 1/8 of an inch increments. Any additional numbers or letters will show various characteristics of the lamp, such as base type, spot or flood, clear or frost, etc… example: 300 PAR56 MFL

ANSI coded lamps The ANSI (American National Standards Institute) code consists of a three-letter designation, which applies to all lamps meeting certain specifications. Two lamps with the same ANSI code will meet those same specifications regardless of the manufacturer. The ANSI code is usually in addition to the description. Lamps with the same ANSI code are interchangeable although occasionally different manufacturers represent the lamp as having different burning life, color temperature, and perhaps other characteristics. Generally, ANSI codes are applied to the newer quartz lamps.

Recall Notice: 65, 65Q The 65, 65Q Fresnels manufactured from March, 1995 through November, 1995, were recalled in December 1995 due to a defective lens door latch mechanism. The spring material that was used was not that full hard brass that Altman specifies for this part, and, as a result, the lamp access door may come open during use. There have been cases where barndoors, color frames, etc, have fallen out of the accessory holder when the door swung open. In order to have the units repaired or replaced, notify the Altman dealer where the units were purchased for details. Field retrofit kits are available, use P/N 95-0125.

  • 1KAF-MBP, 1KAF-MPF The 1KAF 1000 watt Fresnel has had various changes and redesigns over the years. The line drawings are for the units as they are currently in production. Reflector: The original reflector design for both 1KAF Fresnels consisted of P/N 19-0021 & 19-0022 with a special mount that is no longer in production. All reflectors installed in current production are now P/N 19-0007 and use mounting bracket P/N 20-0236. This revision works with all older model 1KAF series Fresnels. Lens Mount: The original lens design of both 1KAF Fresnels has been upgraded. The original design subjected the lens to cracking under certain operating conditions. The current design has the lens mounted from the outside of the lens door instead of the inside. This revision works with all older model 1KAF series Fresnels.

Catalog Number Description Section 360Q-* 360Q Body Assembly 3.3.1 360Q Socket Assemblies 3.3.2

Reflector Change The 360Q Series of Ellipsoidal has undergone a reflector change. The new reflector is the Altman Super Reflector Series, comprising of a 2 piece reflector system. Old style reflectors will not be available as a replacement once inventory has been depleted. Please refer to drawings for update.

Incandescent ellipsoidals The Altman 360 series of ellipsoidals has been discontinued. Use line drawings for the 360Q series to order spare parts. 360 incandescent bell housing, reflector, and yoke are no longer in production. No substitute.

Socket assembly 360Q series ellipsoidals use the same light shield and socket assembly as Altman models 3.5Q-MT series ellipsoidals. The 360Q also uses the speed cap P/N 71-1015 which converts the unit to a 360QX.

Lens assemblies The 360Q series of ellipsoidals all use the same body from the shutter center back to the socket assembly. It is possible to change beam configurations by simply ordering the desired lens assembly and correct barrel. All lenses in the lens assemblies are assembled with the curved sides facing each other.

Housing assembly The housing assembly for 360Q is broken down into sub assemblies and can be purchased as such. Parts not included in assemblies must be ordered individually as illustrated in the line drawing. Sub Assy P/N Sub Assembly Description 95-0149 Entire shutter assembly with iris installed 95-0150 Entire shutter assembly assembled 95-0151 Entire head (bell housing) assembled 95-0152 Yoke with all hardware. Old style 360Q head & yoke assembly The head assembly was modified for the 360Q in 1990. The old style was a straight yoke that used 2 die cast friction washers between the inside of the yoke and body, and two 5/16” T handles. The friction washers are available as P/N 12-0012 and the T handles are available as P/N 37-0025. The yoke is no longer in production. Old style heads can be upgraded to the new style by ordering P/N 95-0199 upgrade kit. Included in the kit: (1) 95-0152 yoke assembly, (2) 20-0124 locking dogs discs, (6) Mounting rivets

    (1) Template, (1) Instruction Sheet.

Shutter Blade Grip 07/09/03- All 360Q shutter blades now utilize a finger grip on each side of blade, part number 32-BF156 (8 per unit).

Reflector Change The Shakespeare series of Ellipsoidal has undergone a reflector change. The new reflector is the Altman Super Reflector Series, comprising of a 2 piece reflector system. Old style reflectors will not be available as a replacement once inventory has been depleted. Please refer to drawings for update.

Product Change As of June of 1996, we no longer use the 8-32 & ¼-20 aluminum inserts (31-0064 & 31-0065) that were pressed into the die cast parts. These inserts were notorious for stripping and falling out, and were unable to be replaced in the field without the proper tools. All casting are now tapped with the proper thread size to eliminate the problem. The instruction manual for the Shakespeare Series 600 incorrectly states in figure 7 that the rubber rings have a color coded dot on them. The color coded dot is actually on the lens and not the rubber ring. The rubber rings should have a hole that is lined up of the dot on the edge of the lens. Shakespeare Products are protected by the following patents and others pending: US Pat Nos. 5,345,371 and D364,001

  • INSTRUCTIONS FOR SETTING UP LUMINATOR FOLLOW SPOTLIGHT

Packaged in 2 boxes; one contains follow spot head with yoke attached, second box; standpipe, base and three casters with fasteners.

    Assembling the Follow Spotlight

With the fins on base legs facing upward, install casters onto base. Screw pre-assembled threaded standpipe into hole at center of base. Remove ½ inch bolt from telescoping pole and insert through hole in bottom of yoke. Reinsert bolt into pole and tighten. When the head is attached to the pole the color boom shall be on the right. “T” handles on each side of spot tightens head to the yoke. Some prefer handles kept loosened for easier movement, adjust to your preference. Your follow spot is assembled and ready for use.

There are two focus knobs, one on the underside for major focus adjustments; the other located top rear for fine-tuning. When first igniting the lamp you may see smoke. This is normal during burn-in. It will disappear after a few hours usage. If controls appear stiff, they will correct with use. The iris leaves, constructed of stainless steel, must be tempered. Igniting the lamp, closing the iris and letting it burn-in for 2 minutes will accomplish this. Reopen iris fully to allow for cool down. Repeat this procedure until iris stops smoking and leaves have turned a bluish/black color. Do not “burn-in” iris for more than 2 minutes each time, you could cause severe damage to iris leaves. Tempering should be completed after a few burn-ins. Lamping: Your follow spot is supplied with a factory installed lamp. When replacement is necessary, use a cloth towel to install new lamp. Apply slight pressure to slide lamp into position. Be sure to wipe lamp clean of any fingerprints, oil or

dirt. A dirty lamp will blister and burn out prematurely. The lamp to use is the 360W FLE…..Always keep a spare lamp with follow spot. This follow spot draws 4 amps. If an extension cord is needed, the standard household variety is acceptable. If you have any questions, the Altman dealer from whom you purchased this follow spot will assist you. Be sure to ask him for an Altman follow spot brochure to learn about other models available. The parts/diagram list provided is also used for manufacturing purposes. Some illustrations shown are complete assemblies, which cannot be sold as individual parts.
