Stephen Stills is one of rock music’s most enduring figures with a career now spanning six decades, multiple solo works, and four hugely influential groups

– Manassas; Buffalo Springfield; Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN); and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young (CSNY). He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice for Buffalo Springfield and CSN. As renowned for his instrumental virtuosity as for writing era-defining anthems, Stills is ranked #28 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, calling his acoustic picking on Suite: Judy Blue Eyes “a paragon of unplugged beauty.”

Judy Collins has inspired audiences with sublime vocals, boldly vulnerable songwriting, personal life triumphs, and a firm commitment to social activism. Five

decades later, her luminescent presence shines brightly as new generations bask in the glow of her iconic 50-album body of work.

The award-winning singer-songwriter is esteemed for her imaginative interpretations of traditional and contemporary folk standards and her own poetically poignant original compositions. Judy’s dreamy and sweetly intimate version of Send in the Clowns, a ballad written by Stephen Sondheim for the Broadway musical A Little Night Music, won Song of the Year at the 1975 GRAMMY® Awards. Recently, contemporary and classic artists such as Rufus Wainwright, Shawn Colvin, Dolly Parton, Joan Baez and Leonard Cohen honored her legacy with the album Born to the Breed: A Tribute to Judy Collins.

7 P.M. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 30 Hot Club of Cowtown and Asleep at the Wheel – Yardley HallYou’d think a band from Austin, Texas, with the word “Cowtown” in its name spends its time off from touring herding cattle at a West Texas ranch or maybe in Nashville writing songs about whiskey and loose women. Not the Hot Club of Cowtown. “We recently took a band vacation to the Gypsy Festival at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer,” says the band’s fiddler and vocalist, Elana James. The band also features Whit Smith, Hot Club’s guitar player, and vocalist and bass player, Jake Erwin.

Since the early 1970s, Asleep at the Wheel have been keeping the sound of Western swing alive. In reviving the freewheeling, eclectic sensibility of Western swing godfather Bob Wills, the Wheel have earned enthusiastic critical praise; they have only preserved classic sounds that had all but disappeared from country music.

American Rhapsody: The Gershwin Songbook

A glorious evening of Gershwin Revel in an evening of iconic American music by one of the

most indelible composers of the 20th century, George Gershwin. Nearly a century after the songs were composed, Gershwin’s music remains as fresh and irresistible as it did during the Jazz Age. His poetic melodies and eclectic oeuvre of everything including Broadway, Hollywood, opera and classic American standards have left a legacy audiences love to hear again and again.

The Gershwin Big Band led by Michael Andrew, whom The New York Post called “the next Harry Connick, Jr. … a natural bandleader,” brings George Gershwin’s music to life in this brand new program.

“ Throughout my life I have enjoyed countless Gershwin concerts throughout the world, and I can truly say that Michael Andrew is one of the most talented entertainers I have ever seen. His ability to interpret the music of George Gershwin is extraordinary.”

Danú and the Kansas City Chorale A Christmas Gathering: Féile Na Nollag 8 P.M. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 9

Friends Package: $23-$66 Package: $25-$70 Individual: $28-$78

Mother and son music magicMadisen Ward and the Mama Bear consists of Madisen Ward and Ruth Ward, a modern soulful/folk music duo from Independence, Missouri. The band’s debut album Skeleton Crew, produced by Jim Abbiss, known for his award-winning work with Arctic Monkeys and Adele, captures Ward and the Mama Bear in their most natural setting.

At home, Ruth Ward and Madisen are mother and son. Onstage, they’re the leading members of Madisen Ward and the Mama Bear, a soulful folk band whose sound is anchored by twin guitars and two big, booming voices.

The music started in Kansas City, where Madisen grew up watching his mom perform cover songs at local coffee shops. Before long, he was writing his own tunes, mixing the old-world influence of his family’s folk records with the unchained, energetic stomp of modern-day rock ‘n’ roll. The two began playing entire shows together, ditching the cover songs in favor of Madisen’s original material. Both sang, both played guitar, and both watched as their band’s audience slowly grew.

Have a very Irish ChristmasChristmas in Ireland is one of the most important holidays for families and friends, as many Irish people living abroad come home to gather in celebration.

Local community choirs singing traditional songs for Christmas and Wrens Day (Dec. 26) are a common sight throughout Ireland each December. In honor of this tradition, The Kansas City Chorale will join Danú onstage for a few songs. Music and dance gatherings, in communities both urban and rural, have often combined for generations to offer a great variety of songs, music, and stories for the holidays.

Danú’s Christmas Gathering offers a taste of these extraordinary events, which have been held across Ireland for hundreds of years.

St. John will perform Lavuta, a program of music from Eastern Europe she has collected through the years. She met the exceptional Curtis Institute of Music-trained classical and jazz pianist Matt Herskowitz several years ago and he proved a catalyst to her idea that this significant collection of melodies was worth reimagining for the concert stage. Some are fully written, some are partly improvised and the amount of technical prowess, soul and excitement is dazzling.

In Lavuta, which is the Romani word for violin, St. John combined her knowledge of melodies with composers she knew and respected, and the project was born. It includes songs from Armenia, Palestine, the Jewish Diaspora, Russia, Macedonia, Serbia, Greece, Romania and Hungary.

From Russia with loveWhether it is the highly-acclaimed CDs or its mesmerizing concerts, the Russian String Orchestra (formerly Chamber Orchestra Kremlin) delivers warm, high energy performances that stay with listeners long after the last note has been played. Founded in 1991, the orchestra, comprised of some of Russia’s finest young string players, has carved a niche for itself under the creative baton of its founder and music director Misha Rachlevsky.

The signature quality of the orchestra is the depth and variety of its repertoire – more than 1,000 compositions from early baroque to new works written on commission by composers from Russia, Europe and the U.S. The orchestra prides itself in offering interesting and often unique programs, not only for its home audience, but on tour as well.

A legend plays onLegend has it that Arlo Guthrie was born with a guitar in one hand and a harmonica in the other. He is the eldest son of America’s most beloved singer/writer/philosopher Woody Guthrie and Marjorie Mazia Guthrie, a professional dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company and founder of The Committee to Combat Huntington’s Disease.

Arlo practically lived in the most famous venues of the “Folk Boom” era and participated in the transition from an earlier generation of ballad singers like Richard Dyer-Bennet and bluesmen like Mississippi John Hurt, to a new era of singer-song writers such as Bob Dylan, Jim Croce, Joan Baez and Phil Ochs. He grooved with the beat poets like Allen Ginsburg and Lord Buckley, and picked with players like Bill Monroe and Doc Watson. He learned something from everyone and developed his own style, becoming a distinctive, expressive voice in a crowded community of singer-songwriters and political-social commentators.

Over the last four decades Guthrie has toured throughout North America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia winning a wide, popular following. In addition to his accomplishments as a musician, playing the piano, six- and twelve-string guitar, harmonica and a dozen other instruments, Arlo is a natural-born storyteller, whose tales and anecdotes figure prominently in his performances.

“ We are a diverse school with many students from different countries. We have several languages spoken by families at our school. Being so diverse brings many gifts and challenges. Kevin Locke’s performance addressed the importance of all of us working together, using our strengths, to make our world a better place. Although we learned other things during the performance, acceptance and working together definitely was an important message our students gained.” – 2nd Grade Teacher, Countryside Elementary, Olathe, Kansas
