HOLLISRESERVOIRHOLLISRESERVOIR
This rese r vo i r which was f i r s tcommissioned in 1936, is the oldest of itskind in Trinidad and Tobago. It was built under the authorisation of Sir Claude Hollis, a pastGovernor of Trinidad and Tobago, from whom it got its name.
The reservoir was constructed bydamming the Quare River, whichenters the reservoir in a majesticsplit series of waterfalls thatconstantly replenish the lake fromwhich an unfailing supply isdrawn.
Hollis Reservoir appears to stand almost atop the surrounding hillsand seems like a sea among the hills.

Areas Benefitting
ollis Reservoir is located inValencia - East Trinidad - nestledamong the foothills of the northernrange. The journey to the reservoirleads through the quiet pasturelands of Wallerfield and Aripo, past the crossroad at Valencia.
The final passage takes youthrough the hills, along awinding roadway fringed withferns, trees and the whisper ofwater from the river that flowsout of sight.
As one passes the watertreatment plant located atHollis Reservoir, there still
isn’t any sign of water. However, as the final hill is ascended, theabsolutely gorgeous expanse of water, edged with towering firs ismade visible.
The reservoir has a distinctly untouched beauty, as if all the man-made confusion of blocked river courses and the business ofconcrete dams and pipelines, has not disturbed the originalcharm of the quiet mountains and the gurgling of the mountainstreams. This all combines to make Hollis by far the loveliest ofthe man-made dams in Trinidad and Tobago.
The water from thereservoir goes througha treatment processthat is simple andprecise.Chemicals are addedto the water. Thesecause sediments in thewater to cling togetherto form bigger andheavier par t ic les.
These particles are then removedwhen the water is passed throughfilters. The water leaving the filter isinjected with chlorine to destroyany disease-causing bacteria beforebeing distributed to areas in eastTrinidad.
The water treatment facility at Hollis was upgraded in 2001and now employs a state-of-the-art, filter backwash system. This allows plant operators to better monitor and control thewater treatment process. The new system eliminates the need for operators to makefrequent visits to these sites to manually operate equipment.
The reservoir reaches itsmaximum depth at 20metres (65 feet) and hasan approximate capacityof 4,750,000 cubicmetres or just over one(1) billion gallons. It isa l s o c a p a b l e o fproducing 38,180 cubicmetres of water per day(8.4 m.g.d.).
The Hollis catchment areasupports a wide range of animallife such as lappe, agouti, tattoo, howler monkeys, caiman, deer, wild hogs and a number ofdifferent types of snakes.
The area is also overlaid with abeautiful array of flowers. The ‘icingon the cake’ in this mix of nature andtechnology.
The pristine forest also provides a home formore than 90 species of birds, some of whichare visitors from North and South America.
This abundance of flora and wildlife has ledto numerous ecological studies by naturalistsand university students from Trinidad andTobago as well as other countries.
