Premier’s Harmony Dinner

Harmony Day celebration witha touch of Bollywood and Bhangra

‘Celebrating State’s Cultural Diversity’

In NSW we come from more than 300 ancestries and speak more than 200 languages and The

Premier’s Harmony Dinner celebrated our enormous successes as the most multicultural state in Australia.

More than 1,500 guests including community leaders, corporate & business leaders, Members of Parliament and non-government organisations attended The Premier’s Harmony Dinner at the Rosehill Gardens Racecourse on Harmony Day, 21 March 2018. The event showcased an entertaining program of colourful performances refl ecting the incredible cultural diversity.

Headline acts The Voice Australia stars Mahalia Barnes and Prinnie Stevens set the stage on fi re with their powerful duet singing. Other acts included Chinese opera sensation Sharon Zhai, a Japanese Australian drumming ensemble and a Sri Lankan dance and drumming group.

The Premier presented Multicultural Community Medals honouring achievements in sectors including human rights, arts and culture, regional communities, and economic participation. The medalists were recognised for their tireless dedication

and effort in promoting community harmony and social cohesion.

In addition to the Medals, the Multicultural Honour Roll recognised the names and achievements of multicultural champions in NSW.

While there were many celebrations of Harmony Day across Sydney, Varun

Tiwari from the Indian Community did his bit to celebrate the Multicultural Australia by performing Bhangra and Bollywood Dance to hordes of Sydney Trains customers at Lidcombe Station.

Varuns high energy performance attracted not only the commuters but also the local police to tap their feet and show some Bollywood moves.

Many organisers from across Sydney Trains came together to plan the program of the day. Colourful costumes, hours of group dance practice and great deal of preparation made it a successful event.

Since the past 9 years Varun has performed in cultural events like Harmony Day and Diwali Festival at various train stations across Sydney - Central, Parramatta, Hornsby are few to mention.

Varun acknowledges the support of Jenny , Kamal Kaur and all his team members and says that he feels rewarded when his dancing brings smile on people’s face and stays on for hours after his performance.

Fashion is a means of self-expression that allows people to try on many roles in life. Whether

you prefer hip-hop or Chanel-chic, fashion accommodates the chameleon in all of us. It’s a way of celebrating the diversity and variety of the world in which we live. Fashion is about change which is necessary to keep life interesting. It’s also a mirror of sorts on society. It’s a way of measuring a mood that can be useful in many aspects, culturally, socially even psychologically. At the same time, fashion shouldn’t be taken too seriously or you lose the fun of it.

What’s trending these days is pant sarees, few of Bollywood celebs has carried it so elegantly.

Saree is essentially a drape. A long, unstitched, decorated drape. This givesit a lot of potential to work with. Whichever way one drapes it, it works. This also gives designers a lot of freedom and creative potential to explore. The wearer also can have different looks with the same piece of

garment. Thus, though the Saree has been around for centuries, its ways and styles have changed and evolved to suit the current styles, and it continues to evolve and change, without changing the basic elegance and feminine delicacy of the drape.

Mumbai: the city of dreams where millions of people come every day to make a living. A

youngster from Mumbai Ganesh Loke carried these positive vibes of his city all the way across the Indian ocean to another city of dreams: Sydney.

Starting of his life as many young Indians do, Ganesh came to Sydney in 1999 to pursue a degree in IT. but he wasn’t satisfi ed with just an IT degree, a 9 to 5 job and a routine life. Nursing a dream of one day producing and starring in a movie, Ganesh went on to produce the Hindi movie ‘Sarfaroshi’ and also produce and star in a Marathi movie titled ‘Shoor Aamhi Sardaar’. Ganesh not only manages a successful movie-production company but also has a thriving IT company based in Australia and is a property investor. If running two thriving businesses is hectic, he has also managed his time allowing him to be involved on the political front, contesting a Federal election in 2013 from the Parramatta region.

While his journey in Australia is indeed a dream come true, the road to a making a successful life in Australia was bumpy, fi lled with disappointments, struggles

and setbacks. Coming to Sydney as a student, Ganesh only had $500 and had to struggle to fi nd part time work, live in shared accommodation and cut costs in most aspects of his life. But he didn’t let that stop him. He still remembers his fi rst part time job in a restaurant in Sydney. Coming from a comfortable life in Mumbai to a new unfamiliar city of Sydney, it was a struggle for him to do a part time work, prepare his own meals every day and still focus on his University studies.

However, the biggest lessons of his life he learnt from this time of struggle. His word of advice to any migrant is that while fi nding jobs within their fi elds is a real struggle in the beginning, never feel it beneath your dignity to accept jobs that do come by. He believes that no job is menial and it will only help make individuals resilient.

What kept Ganesh going through these hard times is his father’s advice: “Nothing is impossible. Hard work, determination and never giving up on your dreams is your only way to success”. While the advice is simple, it is a formula Ganesh has stuck by his entire life and wants his readers to know, so that they too can fulfi l their dreams.

While hard work, passion and perseverance sound great, Ganesh knows from personal experience it is hard to cope with the cultural shock on your own. To give back to the community in a meaningful way, Ganesh has started a Facebook group for migrants which plays a pivotal role in not only helping new migrants navigate the Australian way of life but also connects members to each other so they can form their own support & friendship networks.

Ganesh’s story is captured beautifully by an Australian writer Ms Dominique

Mayfair, who was inspired by his amazing journey and penned the book ‘The Pursuit of Dreams’. The book was launched on the 9th of March 2018 and the launch was attended by Senior Federal MP and Shadow Treasurer of Australia Hon.Chris Bowen, the Mayor of Cumberland Mr. Greg Cummins, other councillors and community members. His book is available on Kindle, Amazon and Apple iBooks*.

Ganesh hopes to inspire not only new migrants but also the youth within the migrant communities in Australia to pursue their dreams no matter how hard the struggle or how long the road seems. Because if there is one thing a boy from the city of dreams believes is that, all dreams can come true for those who are willing to work hard, dream big and want to contribute in building up the nation.

A Bank Guarantee is an unconditional undertaking given by the Bank on behalf

of the customer to pay the recipient of the Guarantee the amount of the Guarantee on the written demand. It can also be defi ned to be an alternative to providing a deposit directly to the supplier or vendor. A Bank Guarantee can have an expiry date after which the Guarantee automatically ceases.

Alternatively, you might also obtain a Bank Guarantee that can be open-ended, where the completion date is not certain or defi ned.

An Unconditional Bank Guarantee is defi ned to be an unconditional and unilateral promise provided and issued by a Bank or Financial Institution to pay a specifi ed amount of sum upon the occurrence of certain events. For example, when a tenant breaches an obligation under the lease. It is like having cash in the bank it is very common

in the construction and commercial leasing industries/transactions for a party to request for an Unconditional Bank Guarantee, and for the other party to provide an Unconditional Bank Guarantee to secure the performance of Contractual Obligations.

An Unconditional Bank Guarantee does not require any proof of default and the owner or benefi ciary will generally receive payment of the full amount upon the presentation of a written statement to the issuer, stating that the contractor has failed to perform. However, a Conditional Bank Guarantee may only be called on the actual proof of default or damage. The payment will only cover the proven loss sustained by the benefi ciaries or the owner, and up to the amount stated in the Bank Guarantee.

The distinction between Conditional and Unconditional Bank Guarantees can be muddied at times, due to ambiguous drafting or the confusion verbal discussions held between parties. Generally, the Conditional Bank Guarantees can be defi ned with regards to the wording which makes the payment under the Guarantee conditional upon the proof of breach of the underlying

contract being referred to, or the existence of notice provisions being defaulted, as condition precedent to any call on the Bank Guarantee.

A Conditional Bank Guarantee contains no express provision outlining the time of the release. However, a normal Bank Guarantee is usually called upon the surety satisfying damages sustained by the owner in the event of a default of the contractor or determination of or the performance of all of the contractor’s obligations under the contract.

A person can only call on the Unconditional Bank Guarantee by issuing a written demand to the issuer, stating the contractor’s failure to perform.

We advise that careful and prudent consideration and advice should be sought before you consent to a Bank Guarantee or Unconditional Bank Guarantee being agreed to be provided on your behalf.

If you wish to discuss the same, please do not hesitate to contact Freedman & Gopalan Solicitors on 8917 8700.

Saturday, 17 March 2018 saw Canberrans come together to celebrate HOLI–The festival

of colours and Harmony Day-the celebration of cultural diversity and togetherness hosted by India Australia Association of Canberra (IAAC). An organisation which has been serving Indian communites in Canberra from 1970

The day was sunny and warm and the perfect setting for some Holi fun and masti. Canberrans enjoyed the true spirit of Holi amidst splash of colours, foot tapping music, entertaining performances by local and interstate artists, impromptu dance breakouts and mouth-watering snacks.

The event was graced by the presence of eminent Canberra personalities. Chief Minister Andrew Barr, Rachael Stephen Smith–Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Leader of the Opposition–Alistair Coe, Chairman of Bendigo Bank–Neale Guthrie, Candice Burch MLA, Deepak-Raj Gupta (to name a few), all expressed their happiness to be there at the event.

In a special message to Desi Australia, Rachael Stephen Smith shared her thoughts on how the Holi Mela was a wonderful example of the enthusiasm of the Canberra Indian community to share its culture with the rest of Canberra and to celebrate the joy of colours, love and triumph of good over evil.

It was indeed a vibrant, colourful and merry setting. Entertaining Bollywood music set the tone for a fun fi lled day.

From children to adults everyone got into the spirit of the festival playing with colours and dancing to Bollywood numbers.

The event organisers IAAC did a fantastic job of hosting the event.

In this issue of Desi Australia Magazine we will be talking about the importance of Security and Digital

Surveillance. It is a new era of security which not only includes traditional alarm systems but also consists of home automation components along with the new trend of installing digital eyes commonly known as CCTV.

CCTV systems were a norm for commercial purposesin yester yearsbut recently we have seen increasing number of residential premises using this technology to keep their families secure and have that extra peace of mind when they are out and about. It is a great technology where we can keep an eye on our homes and our loved ones from anywhere in the world. The question is “Is CCTV surveillance suffi cient or do we need to move more towards smart surveillance?”

In reality the CCTV system is always recording the footage on a built in hard drive on most of the Network Video Recorders (NVR’s), these were previously also known as Digital Video Recorders (DVR’s). As weare moving towards newer technology the NVR became more popular as it provides extra functionalities such as APP control and user friendly interfaces. This whole new concept has changed the way we looked at CCTV systems fi ve to ten years ago. A

typical 8-Port NVR is displayed below:

Most of the CCTV cameras are passive and act more like a deterrent. The only way to tell if there is a robbery taking place is if you are watching the monitors or viewing the APP all the time due to no smarts built in to the system. Let’s add a twist to the whole world of CCTV by adding brains to the digital eyes. This will enable the system to analyse the video whilst it is live with no human intervention. This is not a new invention but rather has been in use by the government agencies for decades. This technology was once very expensive to own but due to technological advancement the prices have come down which is now in the affordable range for general public.

We have all seen Sci-Fi movies where government agencies such as CIA track individuals using various CCTV cameras monitoring the streets and tracking them down and pinpointing the exact location. Well this is all true and has been in use for a very long time as mentioned earlier, such system in operation is shown in this CCTV

footage screenshot of China’s Face++ software.

This technology is also becoming available to police force all around the world and is currently in use by police in China and United States of America. I am sure you must have come across a picture of a cop from China wearing smart glasses with CCTV Facial recognition built in as shown in the picture below.

The facial recognition CCTV systems digitally compares a very high number of faces per second against a centralised database and based on the algorithm running on the cameras. The results are actually a combination of artifi cial intelligence with surveillance and the results are astounding as it will recognise all the faces of general public but also will pinpoint anyone with criminal records at an instant and alerts the authorities in real-time.

Let’s concentrate back on your general home CCTV system as the smarts mentioned earlier are still entering the market but at a slower rate, although it is going to be a normin the future you may not see it in every home anytime soon. The new norm for cameras now a days has higher megapixel resolution which generally also means it has greater clarity and faces or objects are more recognisable. The home CCTV cameras and NVR’s also connect to your normal home Wi-Fi or via an Ethernet connection to the internet router. The new cameras also have the added functionality of motion detection which is in a way a part of smarts so it can start recording upon detection of any type of motion, this can be confi gured or setup during the initial phase of installation.

If you are in the market for a new CCTV system for your existing home

or if you are building a new home be sure to pick a CCTV system with higher megapixel resolution. The norm in the market at the moment is 4MP or 5MP which is reasonable along with a 4-Port NVR or 8-Port NVR depending on the number of cameras that you intend to install throughout the place. It is also a good idea to ensure that these are all IP based cameras with Power Over Ethernet (PoE). In this scenario you no longer have to have a PowerPoint near the mounting location of the cameras as it is powered purely by a simple CAT5 or

CAT6 RJ45 Ethernet cable. This is very helpful as it makes the installation easier and works out cheaper by not having the electrician to install the PowerPoints for additional cost.

There are many thousands of brands of CCTV’s available in the market and can be confusing to pick the right one. It is important to make sure you are

talking to the right person with the right knowledge who can assist you with the decision making.

As I leave you to ponder upon the next phase of CCTV systems I am sure this article will point you in the right direction and will assist in your decision making to choose the right system for your home. As always we intend to capture our readers and would be happy to know your thoughts or to get your feedback. Please send your enquiries or feedback to [email protected]

China, governed by the Communist Party, is a unitary sovereign state in East Asia and

the world’s most populous country, with a population of around 1.4 billion. It exercises jurisdiction over 22 provinces, fi ve autonomous regions, four direct-

controlled municipalities (Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai and Chongqing), and the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau.

Beijing, the capital of China, has an international airport, is twice the size of the Pentagon that covers 1480 hectares and is the second largest airport terminal in the world after Dubai International’s Terminal 3. It can handle more than 90 million passengers a year.

Pollution in the air and covering one’s face to avoid the ramifi cations of it is a common sight in China. Otherwise China is neat and clean. Cleaners are stationed all over to remove any scrap from tossers. Beijing has high security and guards are positioned on roadsides and shopping centers. Surprisingly, access to WhatsApp, Facebook and Google anywhere in China is banned! No wonder China is safe!

Inspite of good roads cities face traffi c jams. Speed cameras, like all countries are installed on the roads, but China believes in on the spot fi ne — the speeding car’s registration number

is displayed in red on the dashboard installed near the traffi c lights area. In Shanghai cars with Shanghai registration number plate are only allowed during peak hours — morning and evening, and also heavy vehicles have restricted hours to regulate the traffi c. Shanghai car registration number plate costs around USD 16000, sometimes equivalent to the cost of the car itself.

Beijing is the political, commercial and cultural center of the most populated

country in the world. Most famous of its imperial treasurers is Tiananmen Square, sitting in the center of the city. Tiananmen Square is the largest urban square in the world today, with an area of up to 440,000 square meters, which can accommodate one million people for holding a grand gathering.

The Forbidden City, once the exclusive

domain of the Ming Dynasty, was constructed from 1406 to 1420, is the complex which consists of 980 buildings and covers 180 acres. The palace complex exemplifi es traditional Chinese palatial architecture and has infl uenced cultural and architectural developments in East Asia. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987 and is listed by UNESCO as the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures in the world. The emperor used to consider 9 as the lucky number. Some doors have 9x9 = 81 nails. The Emperor had many wives and 9999 warriors.

The magnifi cent Great Wall of China is China’s greatest engineering triumph and a must-see sight. Once on top of this ancient defensive structure, you’ll fi nd that some sections are quite steep, but the views are magnifi cent, and the experience is truly unforgettable. And in 1987 the Great Wall was listed into the “World Heritage List” by UNESCO.

Real estate in China is neither easy nor cheap. An average 80 square meter apartment within Shanghai›s Inner Ring Road goes for upwards US$ 886,000; while in the city›s hinterlands it sells for around US$ 200,000. In Beijing, the average cost of a home of this size is roughly US$ 310,000. The whole land of China belongs to the government. The average salary in Beijing is around A$ 1100 per month and in Shanghai is around A$ 1200 per month.

1974. The army of over 7000 life size soldiers and archers are in trench like, underground corridors that guarded Emperor Qin’s tomb since 210 BC. Clay horses are aligned four abreast and behind them are wooden chariots. Each fi gure is unique, and the painstaking repair and evacuation continues to the day at this archaeological site.

The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda in Xian with its solemn appearance, simple style and high structure, is a good example of Chinese traditional architecture. Used to be a place to collect Buddhist sutras taken from India by the hierarch Xuanzang, this ancient tower, is listed in the World Heritage with other sites along Silk Road.

Shanghai, China’s largest fi nancial and commercial center, has 25 million population and six times bigger than Hong Kong and ten times bigger than Singapore. The word ‘Bund’, comes from India, meaning an embankment or dam. This most famous tourist destination, by the Huangpu River in Shanghai, signifi es the meeting of the old Shanghai (built by British) and the new Shanghai (built by Chinese). The

area along the river faces the modern skyscrapers. Popular night cruise takes you to heaven when you witness surrounding high rise buildings and towers with colorful lighting.

The advent of high-speed Bullet train is the country›s network of passenger-dedicated railways designed for speeds of 300–350 km/h has transformed Chinese society and economy. The Shanghai Maglev train, the world’s fastest, is a magnetic levitation train and the fi rst commercial high-speed maglev which runs at 430 km/hour speed and is available only in China.

The Ancient Water Town with a history of over 1700 years is known as “the Venice of Shanghai,» but it is not. Venice is Venice! Filthy water where residents wash their clothes and vegetables, while bargaining shops in the narrow streets were unhygienic.

Chinese cuisine is highly diverse. People in some provinces eat snails, rats, dogs, donkeys, horses, frogs, snakes, etc. There›s a saying here that goes - the Chinese eat anything with four legs except a table, and anything that fl ies

except airplane, anything that swims except marine.

Interesting Fact! Along with Shanghai›s famous hairy crabs, there›s another local product gaining more and more popularity - Shanghai men. One of the most striking headlines about Asian men as marriage partners: “China surpasses the world in yet another category: Quality husbands….in China and may be the world.” Guys who don’t just shop, wash and cook, but famously do so without any complaint.

Silk and Jade are China’s most popular and sellable products. The giant pandas are not only a Chinese national treasure but are also beloved site for many tourists. Shanghai’s Nanjing Road is decked with brand name goods. Here the price of branded goods is around 30% more than Australian market due to high import duty and taxes.

China’s beauty lies in its decorative roadsides, shopping centers and city squares. Seasonal fl ower plants are displayed along the roadsides and trees illuminate at night with colorful lighting — an amazing sight!

Its been seven years (since the 2011 Coalition of Australian Goverments – COAG decision) in the making

and now becoming compulsory with mandate from the 1st July 2018.

PEXA – Property Exchange Australia, is an electronically platform for every Australian capital city Land Titles Offi ce, major bank, state/territory revenue offi ce (for state stamp duty / land tax), professional conveyancers and solicitors to come together, linking their conveyancing matters up, for a electronic settlement, without the need a physical with paper and bank cheques settlement. A PEXA settlement, means the money funds and paperwork are done electronically, whereby at the end, the Purchaser ends up with a electronic title to the property, which can be printed out electronically, or with a title search.

Long waited system, the PEXA on-line electronic settlements is fi nally getting off the ground during 2018, with the NSW Minister for Finance, The Hon. Victor Dominello MP, wanting all property conveyancing settlements

to be electronic, via PEXA, by the 1st July 2018. Past practice of traditional paper settlements, conveyancers & solicitors (or their legal agents) meet at

settlement venues in Sydney CBD, such as SAI Global Property, with the major banks and other lenders, to pass around documentation/discharges/certifi cates of title, paperwork and bank cheques between Vendor parties and Purchaser parties for settlement. When all correct and in order, the property settles, with the purchasers becoming the new owners.

PEXA will become the on-line electronic settlements platform, linking all the banks, the state revenue offi ce with the conveyancers/solicitors and their clients together, by doing conveyancing settlements electronically, by pressing a number of sequent steps buttons. Advantages of PEXA will of course be time and delivery, into the 21 century electronically. Conveyancers and solicitors will still have a role when conveyancing becomes electronic in the next few years, who have the legal skills and legal knowledge to prepare Contracts with special conditions, operate the PEXA platform and advise clients during the conveyancing process, from start to fi nish.

NSW Minister for Finance, The Hon. Victor Dominello MP refers PEXA as “Digital Innovation”. “Digital innovation is transforming the way

people do business in every city and every country around the world. The reality is the collaborative economy is here to stay”.” The Government has committed to a detailed timetable for the introduction of paperless conveyancing. By July 2019, all standard property transactions in NSW will be conducted electronically, and all Certifi cates of Title will be phased out in favour of e-Titles.”.

PEXA (Property Exchange Australia) is Australia’s online property exchange network. It assists members – such as lawyers, conveyancers and fi nancial institutions – to lodge documents with Land Registries and complete fi nancial settlements electronically.

PEXA CEO, Marcus Price, formally of National Australia Bank, is spearheading the property industry’s transition from paper to digital settlements, a move that has challenged practitioners and lenders to adapt.

“E-conveyancing was not a technology problem; it was a people and business problem. There’s nothing particularly earth-shattering about the technology we’re using here; it’s pretty straightforward stuff,” he says. “It’s about changing behaviours and changing processes, so I think a science degree in psychology was entirely the appropriate qualifi cation,” he says.

So far CEO Marcus Price and the PEXA team have been incredibly successful in getting nearly 5,000 conveyancers and lawyers as well as 129 lenders to shelve their familiar paper processes. More than 550,000 digital transactions worth almost $70bn have been transacted through PEXA’s online platform in the last few years.

including New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Canada, UK and India participate in a wide array of traditional Indian and Australian sports and related cultural events. Games are primarily held to bring together the Sikh community each year. The carnival atmosphere is observed and everyone enjoys in their own way.

The Mayor of Melbourne came especially to attend the Australian Sikh Games to get a feel of how big the Sikh Games are as Melbourne is hosting the Sikh Games in 2019 during Easter long weekend.

This year the Sikh Games were a big success with a massive crowd of over 70,000 turning up

Wrestling. Buses were organised from Glenwood and Revesby Gurdwaras to bring spectators to the main venue of the games in Bass Hill. According to organisers, 2925 players (including overseas players) participated in the games and over 150 artists were involved in the cultural activities.

The Australian Sikh Forum Sydney - 2018 was successfully held at the Conference Room, Rydges Hotel Bankstown on

31 March 2018. The Sikh Forum was organised by the Punjabi Satth Forum Sydney. The organiser, Manjinder Singh welcomed the attendees and explained the objective of the Sikh Forum. The program started with a Shabad from Gurbani sung by young children. There were nine speakers who gave their presentation on different topics of the Sikh history and current issues. Cultural Night was held in the auditorium of The Kings High School, North Parramatta on 31 March 2018, where apart from Gatka (Sikh Martial Arts), different teams of Gidha and Bhangra presented their skilful art in colourful costumes. Other additions, to the Sikh Games, were an exhibition of Sikh portraiture by the South Australian artist Daniel

Connell and an exhibition by Punjabi Sath. Principal Sukhwant Singh and his Jatha performed kirtan in 31 Ragas in different Gurdwaras of almost all states of Australia.

Bathla Group, a construction company of Western Sydney was the major sponsors, who spent around $150,000, provided non-stop langar to all for three days. Commendable arrangements were made in its preparation and distribution. “Harman Foundation” distributed free water bottles and “Care One Care All” distributed free cold drinks for three days carnival. There were around 300 volunteers, who were involved in different activities.

The organising committee of the Australian Sikh Games deserve congratulations for the well managed arrangements all over.

Controversy over the fi nal match of Kabaddi

Bitterness was observed on the last day, when after a long wait under scorching heat, the spectators started

throwing water bottles in the fi eld out of frustration. The fi nal kabaddi match was supposed to be held between Singh Sabha Sports Club, Melbourne and Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Sports Club, Woolgoolga, but some kabaddi players refused to undergo doping test. These players have brought disrepute to their sports clubs by refusing to undergo doping test. According to organisers, over two dozen players for doping test were selected randomly from the very beginning of the games.

This is not correct that only kabaddi players were targeted. Doping test was conducted on players of hockey, soccer and kabaddi and only kabaddi players objected to the testing. The organisers further confi rmed that drug testing was implemented from day one of the tournament and was not left to the last game. Since after the semi-fi nal matches some players refused to give drug samples, the organisers were left with no other choice, but to take tough decision to abandon the fi nal match. Majority of the people have supported the tough decision of ANSSACC to abandon the fi nal match of kabaddi. The national

president, Amandeep Singh Sidhu stated in one of the interviews to SBS Punjabi that they are in process of making games clean by imposing more testing and disciplinary measures. The fact is that doping is now tainting the rich history of the Australian Sikh Games, he said.

Kabaddi is a game of power that blends elements of tag, wrestling and rugby. Kabaddi game has transformed from rural, Indian children’s game to a sport played for the large cash prizes in the countries of the South Asian diaspora. There is also an effort to promote kabaddi as a potential Olympic sport, but unfortunately such incidents create obstacles in its promotion.

ANSSACC Drug Policy states, “The Organising Committee of the Australian Sikh Games condemns the use of illicit and banned substances for the purposes of performance

philosophy. Any individual who is caught taking or handling such substances risks a LIFE time ban from participating in the Australian Sikh Games. Such individuals and any such events will be reported to the ANSSACC Executive Committee for further disciplinary action against the athlete and their club, as well as to the relevant police and sports anti-doping authorities.

The terms of entry to the Australian Sikh Games requires all clubs and their players to agree to the rules of the Australian Sikh Games including the ANSSACC Drug Policy. Disciplinary action such as bans or fi nes may apply to any club offi cials or players who

do not cooperate with the policy. Participating clubs and players must

Bollywood superstar Arjun Kapoor attended Longines Record Club at the Gold Coast

2018 Commonwealth Games (Gold Coast 2018) yesterday, showing his support for the Indian team.

Kapoor said the power of sporting events such as Gold Coast 2018 and the rise in sports other than cricket in India has created a greater sense of community.

“It’s creating that feeling of rivalry, it brings the best out of people, it’s a nice energy to have and it brings people and the cities together,”

“Sports are very important for me personally in feeling connected with others, it’s such a great conversation starter for somebody as socially bereft as me.”

With increasing participation in a more diverse range of sports, Kapoor believes there are more opportunities for younger aspiring athletes to play with teams and coaches who will help achieve their goals of competing on a national or international scale.

“I’m hoping that in all the sports you see at the Commonwealth Games in the coming years, you will have a lot more Indians representing our country,”

“I think children now actually have the opportunity to dream bigger, which maybe didn’t exist when I was a kid.”

This new attitude has also been adopted in towns throughout India where lower profi le sports were traditionally not available as options.

“Sport doesn’t see what region or what religion you’re from, it only sees your quality and that’s the best part about sport”

“But, India still lacks a sporting community beyond cricket.” Kapoor said.

Programs like the National Sports Talent Search Scheme (NSTSS) seek to identify

and nurture talent in the age group of 8-12 years. The scheme is operated by the Sports Authority of India (SAI) under the Ministry for Sports and Youth Affairs.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his support for the Indian contingent, before the 220 athletes went into the Opening Ceremony at Carrara Stadium, led by fl ag bearer and badminton hero PV Sindhu.

Mr Modi said the Commonwealth Games are a great opportunity to showcase the diverse talent of Indian sportspeople.

Kapoor was invited to Australia as a Special Guest of Longines who has an impressive list of Global Brand Ambassadors, including Bollywood Actress Aishwarya Rai.

Longines is the Offi cial Timekeeper of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games and Offi cial Partner of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. Longines is also the Presenting Partner of Athletics (Track & Field), Gymnastics, Rugby Sevens and Table Tennis.

Federal Member for Greenway, Hon. Michelle Rowland MP, held a morning tea at the Glenwood

Hub on Thursday, 22 March to celebrate

Harmony Day 2018. More than 100 guests came together to enjoy the event.

This is the third annual Harmony Day event that Michelle Rowland has held to celebrate the diverse cultures and communities that call Blacktown city home.

Local residents from across the community cooked traditional dishes to bring along and share. These ranged from Indian dhokla to New Zealand Afghan biscuits, along with some iconic

Australian Wagon Wheel biscuits.

The Harmony Day celebration included contributions from The Hindu Council,

Sri Om Care, the Blacktown Bahá’í Community and PECOSA Australia. The audience was treated to traditional music, dance, a Hindu welcoming prayer and even a yoga demonstration!

School leaders from local schools also attended the event, including representatives from Glenwood High School, Blacktown Girls High School, John Palmer Public School and Parklea Public School. The students spoke eloquently about what Harmony Day means to them and how diversity makes the community strong.

“Harmony Day is a wonderful celebration of modern multicultural Australia”, Federal Member for Greenway, Michelle Rowland said.

“Although we may come from different

backgrounds, we strive to live and work together in harmony.

“Thank you to all the local residents who joined my Harmony Day Morning Tea this year and brought traditional dishes, made with love from their own kitchens to share amongst the community,” Ms Rowland said.

I will never forget, but with time I am healing and cherish the positive and beautiful memories of my pet that died, when I was a teen, my close friend who passed away after fi ghting a long battle to cancer, and more recently the passing away of a little girl known to my family. The pain her parents are going through is unimaginable and it is heart breaking.

Grief is a natural response to loss. It might be the loss of a loved one, loss of a relationship, something important to you, for example: miscarriage, death of a pet, loss of employment, separation from family and friends, children grieving in divorce, grief when a stranger/ celebrity or public fi gure dies, terminal illness, a tragic accident with loss of lives or a way of life. Even subtle losses in life can trigger a sense of grief. For example, you might grieve after moving away from home, graduating from college, or changing jobs. Whatever your loss, it’s personal to you, so don’t feel ashamed about how you feel, or believe that it’s somehow only appropriate to grieve for certain things. If the person, animal, relationship, valuable, or situation was signifi cant to you, it’s normal to grieve the loss you’re experiencing.Grieving is a highly individual experience; so long as there is no risk or harm to you or anyone else there’s no right or wrong way to grieve. Grief is expressed in many ways and it can affect every part of your life. Some common reactions to grief include, but are not limited to: Feeling sad, frequent crying, shock, denial, confusion, exhaustion, anger, feeling guilty, blame, loneliness, withdrawal, physical health problems, concentration diffi culties, not enjoying usual activities, relationship problems, increased alcohol/drug use and feelings of hopelessness.

Everyone experiences grief differently. The intensity, duration and reaction will vary for every person. Some people will express their emotions outwardly whilst

others will experience their grief more internally. Some people may grieve for weeks and months, while others may describe their grief lasting for years. Through the process of grief however one begins to create new experiences and habits that work around your loss.

Adapted from Swiss Psychiatrist, Kuebler Ross in 1969, her modelidentifi es the fi ve stages of grieving.

The fi ve stages of grief do not necessarily occur in any specifi c order. One often moves back and forth, the stages, or skips a stage throughout ones grieving and before achieving a more peaceful acceptance of death. Many of us are not afforded the luxury of time required to achieve the fi nal stage of grief (Reference Julie Axelrod)

Most people fi nd that with the support of their family and friends and their own resources, they gradually fi nd ways to learn to live with their loss, and they do not need to seek professional help. Often, it is the simple offer of love and support that is the most important. Each day can be different for someone who is grieving; take the time to listen and understand what they are going through. Ask them how they are feeling and how you can help. Helping with daily tasks such as a cooking a meal, doing the shopping, going for a walk, or an activity with them can all help someone through their grief.

For some people, however, circumstances of the death may have been particularly distressing, such as a traumatic or sudden death, or there may be circumstances in their life which make their grief particularly acute or complicated. Look of for signs that they are not coping, that include signs of suicidal thoughts, self-harm, being stuck in their grief, giving up on life and encourage them to get professional help if their grief does not seem to be easing over time (GP, Psychologist and Counsellor). It is important to get support or seek professional help.

How to help yourself:

Don’t be afraid to ask for help;

Talk to friends and family about how you are feeling;

Manage stress, lighten your load by asking friends, family members or work colleagues to help you with some chores or commitments.

Take care of your physical health. (Eat a healthy diet, exercise and sleep)

Relaxation, meditation and gentle exercise can be helpful.

Talk to your GP

His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj captivated audience at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir Adelaide

Devotees and well-wishers gathered to welcome His Holiness Mahant Swami

Maharaj at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Green Fields, SA on Wednesday 07 March.

With deep joy and excitement, devotees offi cially welcomed His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj on his fi rst trip to Australia as Guru and President of the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha, continuing the life work and mission of his guru Pramukh Swami Maharaj following his earthly departure. His Holiness was also welcomed by an aboriginal dance performed by the local dance troupe.

Following his arrival, a welcome assembly was held by BAPS community members. The welcome assembly marked a special occasion for devotees who had worked together for several months planning for Mahant Swami Maharaj’s arrival.

In preparation for his arrival, devotees prepared traditional Hindu gifts of honour such as garlands and shawls. Children and youth practiced their talents for the many scheduled programs during his visit and cultivated their knowledge of spiritual texts and devotional songs to memory as an expression of their heartfelt gratitude.

Various other events throughout His Holiness’ visit included special programs for children and youth (Bal-Balika Din,

Kishore-Kishori Din, Yuvak-Yuvati Din), a women’s cultural program (Mahila Din), an evening Kirtan Bhakti (devotional song) and ‘Sanskrutik Ek Khoj’ – In Search of Indian Culture, a cultural program based on the essence of Indian culture and traditions..

His Holiness inaugurated the Charnarvind (footprints) of Bhagwan Shri Swaminarayan in a water feature in the Mandir premises to the public.

The celebrations concluded with blessings from Mahant Swami Maharaj who encouraged all to uphold unity, maintain faith and further develop one’s spirituality in strengthening the mandir

as a community place of worship.

Mahant Swami Maharaj emphasizes the importance of unity amongst families, organisations and communities. His life communicates the core values of BAPS rooted in mutual understanding, tolerance, respect, and consideration for individuals. He aims to inspire devotees to live a healthy, balanced life, fi lled with spirituality, morals, family values and respect for others.

Six days in the presence of His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj left devotees of all ages with countless experiences and memories that will foster their spiritual growth for years to come.

I used to ask myself these questions: Why is this always happening to me?

Why do I keep meeting people like them?

How do I get out of this bind I’m in?

When is my life going to change?

And so on and so on and . . .

Perhaps you too have asked yourself questions like this.

I have studied the Law of Karma.

I know I am receiving ‘my due’.

OK, I can accept that.

But how can I change what I am getting back?

How can I improve things for myself ?

I know the Law of Karma operates so that we can learn our lessons and change,

and that this will eventually lead to a better life.

Yet I really wanted a shortcut.

I was tired of just suffering the returns.

I wanted a way out.

So, I sat down to think about this.

There surely has to be a better way. There must be an easy way - a short cut.

I wanted to fi nd that shortcut

Basically the Law of Karma says: What I give out, I get back.

So I reasoned this out…

I could turn the logic of this around, just like you play with a riddle or a Rubik’s Cube to extract ‘the magic solution’.

Here is my reasoning, my quick fi x, my shortcut…

If what I give is what I get, then, if I give what I want, I will get what I want.

What do you think of that reasoning?

Does that sound logical to you?

It did to me.

I thought I would try it out.

What did I want most? I wanted love.

So, if I give love, I should get love.

That’s what the Law of Karma says.

I decided to have love for myself and for the individuals in my life,

no matter what their faults might seem to be.

There are two types of love: false love and true love.

True love is unconditional love,

where there is love for others in spite of what are judged

to be their faults. Love the whole package and accept them as they are!

False love is when we “love” others but we want them to change, to be what we want.

So, that’s not really love, is it?

So, I knew that, if I really wanted to receive unconditional love, I would have to give

unconditional love.

I knew that I needed unconditional love because I realised that I was not perfect.

So it would be the only type of love that would work for me, as I had faults!

So I tried this out. I experimented. I felt love for myself and for others unconditionally.

And I did receive love back from so many quarters.

However, I did not receive love back from those closest to me - not in the short term.

Over time and to varying degrees I

NSW Police Force launch new aircraft; PolAir 2, PolAir 6 and PolAir 8

did receive love from them. And I was happy with that.

So, I feel this fi rst experiment worked quite well.

I thought then that I would expand my experimenting to my other needs and desires -

the need for respect, peace and quiet, patience and whatever else I wanted in my life.

If we look at anger, for example, I didn’t like people being angry with me.

That was unpleasant. So, let’s look at anger, if I don’t want people to be angry with me,

I must not give out anger. Then I won’t receive anger back.

How will this work?

If others are angry with me, I will give them peace and good feelings.

I will be patient and remain calm. I will give them the time to settle down, to cool down.

And they will. And they do.

So the anger stops and I am not receiving anger anymore.

So this worked too.

Let’s generalise just for argument’s sake.

If I want people to be patient with me, then I must fi rst be patient with them.

That also works. I have tried that out.

If I want people to respect me, I should truly respect them.

Are there times when this general rule does not work?

Yes! When I am not genuine, it won’t work.

But, when I truly have love or respect or patience for others, I do receive what I want.

Believe me! This new Law of Karma, or this new way of looking at it, is well worth trying out.

I am happy with the results.

Would you like to experiment as well?

It is logical. And it surely does feel good to receive love, peace, patience, respect and anything else I want from others.

It’s your time to experiment. Are you ready?

West meets East for celebrating Vaisakhi “The Harvest Festival of Punjab”

National Sikh Council of Australia organised Vaisakhi celebration at Ryde Civil Hall

on Sunday, 8 April, 2018. More than 300 key members of Sydney’s Indian community from all faiths-Sikhs, Hindus, Muslims, Christians and Jains- took part in it and celebrated Vaisakhi and Sikh New Year. Sydney’s Gurdwaras’ key leaders were amply represented.

The Vaisakhi organising committee included Mr Ajmer Singh Gill, Mr

Bawa Singh Jagdev, Dr Yadu Singh, Mr Gurcharn Singh Kahlon and Mr. Baljinder Singh Nanda.

Prominent political leaders participated in this celebration. They included Hon. Michelle Rowland (Federal MP for Greenway and Federal Shadow Minister for Communications), Hon. Victor Dominello (MP for Ryde and NSW Minister for Finance, Services and Property), Hon. Julie Owens (Federal MP Parramatta), Dr Geoff Lee (State MP for Parramatta and Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier, Western Sydney and Multiculturalism), Hon. Jodi Mckay (MP for Strathfi eld and NSW Shadow Minister for Transport, Roads, Maritime and Freight), Hon. Julia Finn (MP for Granville), Damien Tu Hon. dehope (MP for Epping), Councillor Patricia Prociv (City of Parramatta Council), Councillor Nella Hall (Deputy Mayor of Strathfi eld Council) and Councillor Suman Saha (Cumberland Council).

Mr Bawa Singh Jagdev spoke and

explained what Vaisakhi was about and why it is celebrated. This was the day Khalsa Panth was initiated and this was the day when Jallianwala Massacre took place in Amritsar, India. This is also the occasion when farmers celebrate the harvesting season in Punjab. The speeches from the political leaders were glowing in terms of the contribution of Sikh community. Several political leaders were dressed in traditional Indian attire and were hugely popular in the gathering.

Masters of Ceremonies was Mr Ajmer Singh Gill, who conducted the event effi ciently. Vote of thanks was given by Dr. Yadu Singh, who himself was dressed in Sikh attire including a colourful Turban and a typical pair of Punjabi “Jutis” (shoes). Dr Singh acknowledged Mr HS Johal, whose great grand Uncle, Private Sarn Singh Johal fought alongside Australian troops in WW1 hundred years ago and was killed in the war theatre in Europe. The audience applauded in appreciation when Dr Singh reminded them that he along with Australian Indian Historical

Society had organised a Wreath Laying Ceremony for Private Sarn Singh Johal at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra in June, 2017.

Cultural performances included Bhangra, Gidda and Ghoomar dance, but the most spectacular item was a combo involving a Bhangra and a Bharatnatyam

dancer, who competed in performing each other’s dances, which the whole gathering enjoyed and clapped on.

The celebration was an Alcohol-free event and only vegetarian food was served.

Vaisakhi celebration by National Sikh Council of Australia was a fabulous event, which the team organised with spectacular professionalism. This is now going to be a regular event, which will be better and bigger next year and years afterwards.
