The key focus for 2013 was to sustain the growth we have achieved over recent years and underpin the foundations of our business. Many changes occurred during 2013 such as the opening of our new 6000sq ft Secure Build facility, the completion of our new Fabrication and Steel Stores, Module Kitting department and the new IT & QA office block extension. These changes have also brought opportunities with many new faces joining the business and many existing faces developing their career within the organisation. It is an impressive achievement that we have managed to deliver these strategic developments whilst still consistently delivering in style to our customers. The Board of Directors would like to take this opportunity in thanking every member of staff for their hard work and dedication which again has been of the highest standard. 2013 also brought recognition of our business achievements from respected organisations within the UK. In September we were recognised by Yorkshire Insider for our innovative business strategies and awarded their Gold Medal Award for the business that the panel of judges voted the most impressive in Yorkshire. Further to this, in November Lambert was recognised by the London Stock Exchange and The Telegraph as one of the top “1000 companies to inspire Britain”. When you consider we are up against 4.5 million other UK companies then I am sure you will agree what a tremendous achievement this is – there is more to read on these points further on. Looking forward throughout 2014 and beyond, I am delighted that all signs show this success will continue. The current WIP and pipeline of work are the healthiest levels in the history of our business, the global financial recovery is still positive and without doubt the innovative, value added image of manufacturing within the UK is starting to gain the status it deserves. All of this gives me confidence and when I look at the planned investment and development of our staff, facility and business services I see us truly aligning ourselves to take the next step forward on our customer centric journey. DELIVERING SUSTAINABLE GROWTH A WORD FROM

OUR PURCHASING

MANAGER

The last 2 or 3 years have been achallenging time at Lambert as thecompany evolves. Many areas of the business have seen changeswith new initiatives beingintroduced to make the companyapproach its challenges in a unifiedway and everyone being aligned. We have also realised that not onlydo we need to all be working to the same goals within the Lambertteam but we also need to havesupply chain partners that shareour vision and culture.

Accident statistics are reported monthlyand you will all come across these whetherit is through SharePoint, CommunicationPosts, team briefings, management reviews etc.

With an excellent health and safety policy in place we are very lucky that most of theday-to-day treatment is for minor cuts, themost common being cuts to 1st finger righthand, however, it is reassuring to know thatif an emergency should happen, the teamare there to help. With response times to anywhere on the Lambert site fromseconds to a maximum of 2 minutes you can be assured of highly qualifiedassistance being there.

Julian Sharp (CNC Milling) has 33 years’experience of being a qualified first aider, closely followed by Steve Bowers (FittingTeam Leader) with 28 years. The newestmembers to the team are Deborah Bruton(Facilities Support) and Sam Monkman(Electrical Fitter).

Although unable to administer medication, the First Aid team are all qualified to usemedical gasses and attend annualrefresher training. The use of oxygen isquite rare but team members havepreviously been called on to administeroxygen in the event of allergic reactionsfollowing wasp stings and one adversereaction to prescribed medication.

Over 40 years there have been 3 potentiallylife threatening injuries as a result of bloodloss which, because the injuries weretreated quickly and efficiently, resulted in happy endings. The most unusualtreatment was administered for a bee stingto a nipple – quite painful for the patient atthe time.

And remember first aid does not stop oncethe team are outside Lambert - our firstaiders get called upon to help in varioussituations particularly attending to sportsinjuries and those sustained at Scout camps.

The following is a recount of an incidentwhich is a good example of why you should call on a first aider – even for thesmallest cuts.

A 35 year old Lambert electrician wascarrying out an installation on site in the US.One day he got a small cut on his fingerwhich he thought was something andnothing. After a couple of days the woundbecame quite sore so he asked a first aiderat the customer’s site to look at the cut andit was subsequently cleaned and dressed.Unfortunately over the period of a week orso the wound got more painful. On the flightback to the UK his finger was excruciatinglypainful so as soon as his flight landed hecalled in at A&E for emergency treatment.

It was very lucky he did as whilst he was in A&E he suffered a major heart attackcaused by septicaemia (blood poisoning).Ten years on and fighting fit he still takesmedication, fortunately though not the 44tablets a day he had to.

So, please remember, even the smallest cutneeds prompt attention – our first aid teamare more than happy to help and nothing, however minor, will be disregarded.

To remind you all, we have a Defibrillator on site which has been registered withNorth Yorkshire Ambulance Service and is available to qualified first aiders to treatpublic emergencies within the vicinity ofLambert. All members of the first aid teamare qualified in its use.

Following a crisis visit to one ofour suppliers due to a majorsupply issue we realised that wedidn’t understand their businessnor did they understand ours. This made us think, what if we shared ourcompany’s vision and strategy with keysuppliers, could this change the way we dobusiness? From this point we startedidentifying key businesses and invitingthem to Lambert so we could present ourbusiness vision, values and aims. Thesemeetings made us realise that working witha supply chain that was aligned to how we

approach business would change the valuewe could get from them but moreimportantly the value we could ultimatelygive back to our customers. The first stageof establishing strategic supplierpartnerships is now underway and this willbe rolled out to selected suppliers we willbe moving forward with.

No longer do we just transact with oursupply chain but now we work together onhow we can find solutions, working closelywith our sales, design, purchasing, production and purchase ledgerdepartments in fact every aspect of thebusiness is starting to see the benefits of a

stronger working relationship with oursuppliers. Over the coming months we willlook at consolidating our supply chain andhave review meetings with our top 10 todevelop our business relationships further;identifying what works; technicalawareness; performance improvements;ease of business; sales and marketingcollaborations etc.

Full support and co-operation from Lambertand its suppliers helps to bring muchgreater value that goes far beyond just theprice of a component.

Steve SissonsPurchasing Manager

We are very fortunate to have a fully trained and dedicated First Aid team on site and we want tohighlight the great work they do, which quite often goes unseen.

Why are we showing you these logos? These enterprises have recognised the massiveachievements made by Lambert since 2009 – read on and find out more about the successfuland dynamic company you helped to build andare truly an important part of.In November 2013 a book was published by the London StockExchange Group entitled “1000 Companies to Inspire Britain”, thefirst report ever commissioned to list the 1000 most inspiring smalland medium sized (SMEs) companies in the UK. To be included inthe list, companies had to demonstrate not only a positive growth in revenue over the last four years, but also an increase inemployee numbers, workplace size and outperformance of theirsector peers. This first report identifies 1000 of the most excitingand dynamic small and medium sized companies in the UK –

LAMBERT IS PROUD TO BE RECOGNISEDAS ONE OF THESE COMPANIES.

The term SME describes a very broad cross section of businessesfrom the high street grocer to the high-tech manufacturer andexporter. Within this group of more than 4.5 million UK companiesthere is an exciting sub-set of fast growing, dynamic businesses. These ‘gazelle’ companies as the CBI (Confederation of BritishIndustries) calls them, or the vital 6% as think tank Nesta*describes them, are of exceptional importance to UK economicgrowth and job creation. According to Nesta, high-growthcompanies are rare but generate the majority of jobs, theyrepresent only 6% of all UK firms employing 10 people or more.Lambert falls into this small percentage of companies.

“Celebrating the success of these SMEs is a shockingly under-reported story and we are determined to change that. The research put into pulling the list together highlights the role of the UK’s most innovative and fastest expanding SMEsin leading the economic revival.”

Xavier Rolet, CEO, London Stock Exchange Group

Lambert did not apply to be part of the 1000 most inspiring SMEs,no this honour was external recognition for the continued hardwork, commitment, dedication and proactive support put in by you,its employees. Along with the Chairman and all the Directors I amextremely proud of this achievement and hope you are too.

INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (IMS)Project Beagle and PAS 99 managementframework for an organisation:

Ian Hampton and I have beenworking with departmentmanagers to review ourmanagement systems anddevelop new StandardOperating Procedures (SOPs)aligned to our company strategy,a project known internally as‘Beagle’ after the ship CharlesDarwin travelled on to theGalapagos Islands. After discussion with BSI we formallyintegrated quality (ISO 9001); environment(ISO 14001:2004) and occupational healthand safety (BS 18001:2008) into onemanagement system. The most practicalway to do this is to achieve BS 18001registration. BSI would then be able to carryout all assessments as an integrated system.

We also adopted the frameworkspecification PAS 99, which would map allthese and any other standards we may

wish to include in the future. PAS 99 closelyreflects our strategy and processes, so we decided to align our ManagementSystem Manual, policy statements andother documentation to it.

This part of Project Beagle has now beencompleted and the resulting documentsand databases will be available onSharePoint in Q1 2014. Followingpublication we will be carrying out trainingsessions on the new documents and howto access them.

BSI assessment reports

In addition to the ISO 18001assessments we have had our regular 9001 and 14001assessment visits.

Both reports were thorough, professionaland reassuring in that no non-conformitieswere raised and there were only two‘opportunities for improvement’ which havebeen addressed.

The ISO 14001 summary stated that:‘based on the objective evidence the areasassessed during the course of the visit weregenerally found to be effective. Overall theassessment was very positive, with highstandards of housekeeping noted aroundthe site, particularly in the lower machineshop. A good database has also beenestablished for monitoring in relation tolegal requirements’.

The report on ISO 9001 commented thatgood practice was seen and a commitmentto improvement was evident.

The BSI Assessors and I would like toexpress thanks to all involved in theextremely successful assessments, andespecial thanks for the conscientious effortsmade by the internal audit team: JustinNewborn, Rob Williams, George Jacksonand Paul Lockwood.

ENGAGING THE NEXT GENERATIONLambert was invited to attend a Careers Fairat Read School on 20th November 2013.Mike Jennings, Greg Ward, Sam Yeadon andLinda Underhill represented the company. There were about 30 employers at the event with the usual power station and armed forcesrepresentatives together with a number of other local employers.

We took the TAD1 kart which had been designed, built and raced by our apprentices for aSoap Box Derby event and this generated a lot of interest from all the different age groupswho attended. We also took our Electrical Box with us where students could push and pulldifferent buttons and make a different sequence of events take place resulting in differentlights being illuminated.

For the first time at a careers event we invited one of our apprentices, Sam Yeadon(Electrical) to speak to the students about a Lambert apprenticeship, clearly a subject he isvery enthusiastic and confident about.

SKILLS SHOW INSPIRESMike Jennings and Linda Underhill took the 7 Lambert Apprenticesto visit The Skills Show which was held at the Birmingham NEC on15th November 2013.Having reviewed the event with the Apprentices they all felt that it was a really goodexperience and that they enjoyed seeing apprentices from other disciplines putting theirskills into practice saying that they were “well skilled”. Sam Yeadon and Adam Stoneattended the Show last year as first year apprentices and they felt they got more fromit this time around because they understood more about the machinery and equipment, particularly the FESTO stand and the dancing robots.

We looked at a wide range of skills from different disciplines, including the built environment, automotive, aerospace, IT and other artisan craft skills such as stone masonry andlandscape gardening. All of our apprentices were impressed with the welding competitionwhich was taking place – even those who do not do welding themselves.

Under the guidance of Mike Jennings(Module Technology Design Lead) actingas ‘Team Manager’ we had severalmeetings to discuss our ideas and arrangetimes that we could dedicate to themanufacture of the soapbox. After a votewe decided on the team name of TAD1, theregistration plate of the largest vehicle inLambert’s fleet.

The project allowed us to work as a team, each having the opportunity to inputthoughts and ideas; to understand andutilise each other’s strengths. Anotherbonus was having different members of theteam working in different departments thuscovering all the skills sets required.Throughout the project we encounteredproblems which had to be solved such asinner tube failure and a redesign of thesteering/braking mechanism.

Not only did we find the project veryinteresting we also developed new skillssuch as fabrication, planning and design.

We also gained experience in thepurchasing department contactingsuppliers for materials, donations andsponsors. Overall we found the project a great success and were very proud to be runners up in our first attempt at anevent of this kind, and also being awardedthe trophy for best designed soapbox onthe day. We would especially like to thankLocate Supplies and BBN for kindlydonating materials towards TAD1 and Mike Jennings for his mentorship.

We hope to carry on racingTAD1 during 2014.

TAD1 SOAPBOX DERBYIn August 2013 the apprentices were approached as a group andgiven the opportunity to design and build a soapbox then competein a local derby within a six week timescale.
