NVIS Models

Traditional vertical ‘whip’ antennas fitted to vehicles for high-frequency communication suffer from a ‘skip zone’, where little or no communication is obtainable in a given area.

The SMC Mobile HF Loop Antenna, developed for NVIS (Near Vertical Incidence Skywave) communication across 3-15MHz, overcomes these limitations by having high radiation efficiency and no skip zone whatsoever.

Capable of automatically tuning across its frequency range in less than a 50th of a second, it is compatible with virtually any HF transceiver including frequency hopping types without the need for a separate control.

Based on the tried and tested SMC mobile NVIS loop which is in use by organisations throughout the world, this latest version incorporates a significant upgrade to ruggedized thick-walled tubing for performance and durability.Other versions are available for:

• Vehicle roof-bar fitment with a ‘fold-down’ facility• Side mounting on the vehicle.

The standard loop roof bar attachment is designed for roof bars 32mm x 22mm in cross section. However attachments can be manufactured to suit your individual requirement.

Fixed NVIS Loop Antenna

Operating both NVIS and long distance sky wave.

As well as the compact mobile HF loop, two versions of fixed station loop antennas are also available, which operate on both NVIS and long distance sky-wave propagation modes across 3-30MHz.

The two versions are a wire element loop with 3m sides, and a solid element loop with 2.5m sides, each offering similar high efficiency. These are ideal for use where space is limited, and rival the performance of much larger wideband HF wire antennas.

HF Antennas

Rhombic Antenna

The rhombic antenna is a highly directional array ideally suited to medium to long haul circuits. Radiation angles vary with the design and ground coefficient but for average ground and a height of approximately a half wavelength, the radiation angle is 35° changing to 15° at 4 fo (Four times the optimum frequency). The main design parameters, ie height above ground, leg length and angle between legs, govern the gain of the antenna for a specific frequency.

The simple one wire system has a bandwidth of approximately 2:1, however SMC have wide experience in the design of this type of antenna and are able to offer arrays with 1, 2 or 3 wires per leg to give a bandwidth of up to 4:1 and, by careful design, gains of 22 dBi are possible.

Rhombic antennas are supplied for powers up to 20kW complete with feeders, terminating resistors or dissipating lines and insulators for mounting on customers’ own masts. Alternatively SMC can supply complete systems designed to customers’ requirements with hot dipped galvanised steel tubular or lattice masts or aluminium lattice masts. SMC supply masts painted to ICAO standards complete with lighting kits if required. Baluns are also available for matching to 50 ohm or 75 ohm coaxial feeders or 600 ohm transmission line.

Trapped Dipole Antenna

The SMC Trapped Wire Dipole Antenna is a compact and simply operated multi-frequency antenna, designed to provide up to 6 spot frequencies, (dependent upon channel spacing) with bi- or omnidirectional coverage in the HF band. The antenna may be used as shown, with two support units (preferred method) or more economically using a single support structure.

The construction reflects SMC’s policy of ensuring long trouble free use, utilising only best quality components. Each antenna is supplied complete with 30m of low loss coaxial feeder incorporating a strain relief arrangement, and fitted with one PL259 UHF connector. The Dipole Centre Junction is formed by a balun unit to ensure matching is achieved.

The elements are constructed of hard drawn copper magnesium multi-strand for durability and high resistance to corrosion.

Fan Dipole Antenna

The SMC multifrequency antennas are designed to give a low cost compact antenna for short to medium range omnidirectional or bidirectional coverage on up to four spot frequencies in the HF band.

The SMC/MCFD/N is designed for installations where two masts can be used, while the SMC/CFD/N is a more economical version using only one mast. Both antennas use the TA Series Balun coaxial cable junction unit which has a built-in suspension point for the coaxial downlead, so ensuring that the weight of the cable is not taken by the termination. The antennas are designed for fixed or temporary location, and are constructed of high quality components. The elements are of multistrand hard drawn copper magnesium fitted with line taps and end insulators.

Several versions are available with the number of elements normally equal to the number of spot frequencies required. Some coupling between elements will occur, which affects the VSWR, so final adjustment can be made on site quite simply by adjusting the line taps on the ends of each element. For this reason the elements are supplied cut over-length.

All installations are delivered complete with halyard strops, D shackles, insulators, and the TA Series Balun junction unit which can have UHF type N or any other termination to order. Coaxial cable to customers’ requirements complete with connectors. Masts for light or heavy duty, lighting kits to ICAO standards and mast erection equipment are all available. Where antennas are to be used in extreme environments we would recommend the SMC galvanised tubular or lattice steel masts. Details of these can be obtained on application from the Antenna Systems department of SMC.

Full Wave Cage Dipole

The SMC 8 wire full wave cage dipole antenna exploits the principles of a large diameter radiating element giving a broader band width, in the order of 2:1 for transmission, and 2.5:1 for receiving purposes. Having a high characteristic impedance of 600 ohms the antenna may be fed using 600 ohm open wire line, or coaxially using the appropriate Balun transformer.

FULL WAVE CAGE QUADRANTThe full wave quadrant is essentially a full wave cage dipole bent at the centre to 90’, as a result producing a very good omnidirectional radiating pattern in the horizontal plane. The vertical pattern, bandwidth and power rating remain unaffected. Quadrant antennas can be installed in groups on a four mast arrangement, giving better bandwidth (using up to four antennas).

HF Dipole Centre Fed Dipole Antenna

SMC are specialist manufacturers of a wide range of HF communications antennas. Our world wide experience of antenna

requirements enables us to offer the most suitable antenna for customer installation together with a prompt delivery service. All our antennas are made from high quality purpose designed components suitable for the most extreme environments. These antennas can be supplied ready made for specific frequencies or cut over length and supplied with line taps and frequency charts for simple on site adjustment.

These antennas are most suited for short to medium range working. When suspended about a quarter wave above ground level radiation is predominantly upwards, giving some omnidirectional coverage using skywaves. As the height above ground level is increased to a half wave, the radiation pattern tends to a figure of eight.

Transportable

The Whiskey, or “W” antenna is designed as a local, regional to continental (0-4000km) coverage antenna intended for High Frequency Communications. It is an 0mni-directional horizontally polarized system. Typical use is for disaster and rapid deployment scenarios. Its strong NVIS (Near Vertical Incidence Skywave) capabilities allow for communications over mountainous/jungle terrain and its full 2-30 Mhz spectrum broadband coverage makes it an excellent antenna for ALE operations without the need for a tuner/coupler. Radial ground plane or grounding is not required making the antenna ideal for ground/rooftop installations and mobile “on the move” field use. The “Whiskey” antenna can be purchased in transportable or permanent models.

‘25W Wolf’ and ‘Wolf Pup’ Transportable HF Antennas

Based on the higher power ‘Wolf’ antenna which is currently in worldwide use, the 25W Wolf and ‘Wolf Pup’ antennas have been designed for use where light weight and rapid deployment are needed, along with an extended frequency range up to 60MHz, typically for battery powered transportable and man-pack HF/VHF radio transceivers.

The ‘25W Wolf’ Folded Dipole antenna is designed as a regional coverage antenna intended for near and mid-range HF communications in environmental disasters and similar scenarios. It offers a rapid deployment time for use when a fast communication set-up is essential.

Two versions are available, each having the same frequency range and power rating specification. The ‘Wolf Pup’ is only half the length of the ‘25W Wolf’ and is ideal for use where deployment area is at a premium. A compact combined and fully encapsulated balun and load is used for light weight and rapid deployment in both versions, and Kevlar strengthened antenna elements are used for durability.

This antenna can be configured as a Flat Top NVIS antenna, Inverted ‘V’ for medium to long ranges, or a sloping directional antenna.

Its strong NVIS (Near Vertical Incidence Sky wave) capabilities allow for communications over mountainous terrain or in jungle environments, and its broadband coverage makes it an excellent antenna for ALE (Automatic Link Establishment) operations without the need for a tuner/coupler thus reducing system costs and overall weight.

No radial ground plane or grounding is required, making the antenna ideal for rooftop installations.

Transportable

Transportable Delta Loop Antenna

The TDL System (TDLS) is a versatile multi-mode transportable antenna system.

Using multi-functional components, the TDLS consists of 2 dipole antennas, covering 2-12 and 12-30MHz. The elements of these can be arranged as a directional wide band loop antenna, giving up to 7dbi forward gain. The system is supplied complete with all the necessary low loss feed cable, balun transformers, and ground anchors.

It is usual for the antenna to be erected on a tree, or suitable natural object, and, to assist mounting, SMC has a full range of complimentary support masts for use with the system. All components are either drab olive or matt black and the complete system packs into a single kit bag.

MF Antennas

MF Tee AntennaDesigned for the MF bands, the MF “T” antenna has omnidirectional characteristics. The inverted “L” antenna is a special type of vertical radiator in which the upper element is bent over. This enables a reasonable length of wire to be used without the need for using high masts. The direction of the electric field is no longer completely vertical but it has a strong horizontal pattern. The “T” antenna may be regarded as an inverted “L” type antenna in which the horizontal portion has been duplicated to increase the top capacitance to earth and keeps the vertical element further from the possible interference of the supporting masts. The length of antenna is not intended to be self resonant, it can be brought to resonance over the MF range using a suitable ATU. SMC manufacture 1, 2, 3 or 4 wire arrays to capacity requirements.

Radiating MastsSMC carry a stock range of components which enables a simple tubular steel or tubular aluminium mast to be converted to a radiating mast for the 200kHz to 28MHz MF and HF bands. (Spot frequency or tunable with appropriate antenna matching unit).Any of the masts described in our data sheets PA2 or TS series may be converted making a very versatile range of omni directional antennas from 6-30 metres in height, in 2”, 3” or 3 ½” diameters. For the lower frequencies (or where mast height is a consideration) a capacity hat arrangement may be included in the design for more efficient operation. The SMC PA2 series of portable aluminium masts are particularly suited to transportable, portable or permanent use with the appropriate fittings, and the TS series masts are normally for permanent Installation.

Pneumatic Telescopic Masts - NH Series

The NH Series of telescopic Hilomasts have a base section diameter of 89mm and are pneumatically operated with either a manual footpump or small air compressor.

Although the smallest in the range, they are robust and ideal for applications where portability is of prime importance. Easily fitted to a vehicle, the masts are suited to mobile applications where light antennas are required. The top section diameter for the antenna fittings is specified in the table below.

The table of masts below is only a small selection of possible mast configurations. Due to the modular design of all Hilomast Pneumatic masts we are able to offer masts in custom sizes, with or without locking collars, and in various colours and finishes. Please contact a member of the sales team for a friendly chat about your requirements.

The table shows the vertical headload that each mast will support and the maximum operational wind speed. The weight of the antenna, however, is not usually the main criterion when selecting a mast. The limiting factor is usually the ‘side surface area’ of the antenna. The wind speeds shown are based on the following side surface areas:NH Masts = 1000 sq. cm. NK = 1400 sq. cm. NL = 2000 sq. cm. NX = 3000 sq. cm. NY = 11000 sq. cm.All dimensions are approximate.

Pneumatic Telescopic Masts - NK Series

The NK Series of telescopic Hilomasts have a base section diameter of 102mm and are pneumatically operated with either a manual footpump or small air compressor.

Although designed for long term applications the NK series is equally suited for experimental work. The top section diameter for antenna fittings is specified in the table below.

Pneumatic Telescopic Masts - NL Series

The NL Series of telescopic Hilomasts has a base section diameter of 127mm and is pneumatically operated by air compressor. The shorter models in this series can be easily operated by a manual footpump. Being heavier than the NK Series it will support larger antennas under more adverse weather conditions. Although these masts can be used for portable applications they are primarily designed for vehicle installation, either bracketed to the rear, or mounted through the vehicle roof.

Models NL16 and NL22 can be mounted onto the roof of a vehicle in a sliding carriage. The

carriage slides rearwards and the mast is then tilted and clamped in the vertical position. Masts NL8, NL12 and NL22 have a top section diameter of 50mm for attaching antennas. Masts NL9, NL10 and NL16 have a top spigot of 50mm diameter x 130mm long.

Pneumatic Telescopic Masts - NY Series

The NY Series of telescopic Hilomasts have a base section diameter of 229mm and are pneumatically operated by custom-built air compressors. These masts have special engaging screws fitted into each of the main collars to resist high torsional loads when the masts are fully extended.

The NY Series of masts are for special applications where high headloads are required or where maximum directional stability is necessary. There are a wide use of applications for this series, typical uses could be:

• Mounting video cameras fitted with telephoto lenses• Microwave dish antennas for electro news gathering/outside broadcast• Direction sensitive antennas or devices.

For large diameter antennas, it is important to ensure that the torsional loads transmitted to the masts when fully extended do not exceed the following:

• NY7 and NY21 = 5200kg cm• NY10 and NY18 = 5800kg cm• NY12 and NY14 = 4300kg cm

All NY masts have a horizontal flange of 150mm diameter at the top for mounting antennas etc. This flange can be drilled to suit customer requirements.

The table of masts below is only a small selection of possible mast configurations. Due to the modular design of all Hilomast Pneumatic masts we are able to offer masts in custom sizes, with or without locking collars, and in various colours and finishes. Although the masts will support antennas with a larger side surface area than that shown, the maximum operational wind speed will be correspondingly reduced. If in doubt, please ask for a computer check against your specific application. All dimensions are approximate.

HD Range (Heavy Duty Mast) - Pneumatic Telescopic Mast

The new Heavy Duty range of pneumatic masts is the largest, most rugged in the Hilomast portfolio. Designed to the highest possible specifications, these masts are used where extreme head loads need to be supported and where greater extended heights with maximum wind loading are required.

The flexibility of this range comes from using aluminium tubes that have smaller increments in diameter. This gives masts in the range larger top sections, in turn delivering a stronger mast. These smaller increments allow the HD range to contain up to 12 sections, letting HD masts reach greater extended heights from shorter retraction and giving more flexibility in extended heights, retracted heights and head-loads.

HD Mast ApplicationsThe HD range of masts are for special applications where high headloads are required or where maximum directional stability is necessary.

Pneumatic Telescopic Masts - BR Mast Series

Whilst many masts in the Hilomast range can be used for Broadcast Applications, 6 standard configurations are offered to meet the particular needs of the ENG vehicle market. The BR25 and BR30 models have 6” base tubes whilst the BR42/BR48/BR52/BR56 models have a base diameter of 9” all of which are pneumatically operated by custom built air compressors.

These masts do not have locking collars but have special engaging torque screws fitted into each of the collars to resist the torsional loads when the masts are fully extended. The BR series of masts is for special applications where high head loads are required or where maximum directional stability is necessary.

Standard Features:• The use of highly accurate drawn aluminium tube ensures optimum seal performance and minimum leakage.• A full length keyway machined in each of the extending tubes prevents relative rotation between

them, the key in this keyway will break before any damage is done to the tube section of the mast, in the event of excessive torsional load.

• Operation over a wide temperature range -22°F - 122°F (-5.55°C - 50°C)• Low Pressure (14-16 p.s.i) operation, to minimise leakage and seal failure.• Drain holes to eject water and minimise damage to ice formation.• Clear anodised tubes and collars painted any colour.• Maganetic switch to warn of incomplete retraction.• Non rotating base plate and roof installation kit.

Telescopic Masts

Pneumatic Telescopic Masts - FM SeriesOne of the main problems with floodlighting masts is the electric cable having to safely travel the full length of the extended mast, and be conveniently stored when retracted.

The FM Series of Hilomast has solved both these problems in a neat and practical way, a coiled cable enters the mast through a special gland in the base and extends inside the mast to the top where it exits into a junction box for lighting connections. The memory in the cable allows it to extend and retract with the mast.

Coupled with the obvious advantages of a pneumatic telescopic mast the ‘FM’ System is one of the market leaders in this field.

There are three standard models in this series, all with a base diameter of 115mm. Each has an inner cable with four cores of 2.5mm/sq., and are complete with a rain shield, rotation handles, pressure relief valve and mast extension warning switch.

Mounting is with side mounting brackets NSM/115, or Vehicle Roof Installation Kit NRB/115. Extension is by compressor or foot pump. As these masts are usually used in situations of short duration, they do not have locking collars or top guys as standard, but are available if required.

Hilomast Compressor Kits for Hilomast Pneumatic Masts

Hilomast compressors are air cooled, oil-less and of the diaphragm type. They have steel cases and are powered by electric motors. All models incorporate a pressure controlled switch to maintain the correct mast working pressure. They are quiet, maintenance free and assembled from components that have a proven reliability over many years.

To calculate time to fully extend mast: The height of mast is divided by rate e.g. For NL/12 mast with NC/2 Compressor - Extension Time = 12 ÷ 4.8 = 2.5 minutes. The time to reach max. pressure is approx. 2 x Extension Time e.g. 5 minutes.

Compressor Type Approx. rate of mast extension Metres per minute NH Series NK Series NL Series NX Series NY Series

NC1 7.2 4.2 2.6 1.7 -

NC2 13.5 8.1 4.8 3.2 1.7

NC3 - 18.1 10.8 7.5 3.9

NC1 Compressor NC2 Compressor NC3 CompressorThe NC1 compressor is the smallest and simplest in the Hilomast range. They are portable and thus suitable for field applications. The units are supplied complete with a single hose and mast connector. The mast is retracted by a manual exhaust valve on the front of the unit, enabling full control from inside a vehicle or building. Although designed primarily for the NH and NK Series masts, they will perform satisfactorily with the NL Series, when the speed of extension is not important.

The NC2 compressor has all the features of the NC1 compressor and gives approximately twice the output. An additional feature is a single switch that controls both power supply and an electrically operated exhaust valve.

The units are supplied with two hoses, one for connection to mast and one for exhaust air and drainage. This feature is very useful for vehicle installation, as it drains the moisture collected in the mast from the compressor. The NC2 compressors are ideally suited for the NL Series masts but will work equally well with the NK and NX Series.

The NC3 compressor is the largest in the Hilomast range. Although designed for NX and NY Series masts, they can be used to operate smaller masts where a faster rate of extension is required (see table) They have the same type of switch and hose arrangement as the NC2 compressor.

The units are supplied to meet standard conditions but there is capacity within the system to accommodate customers specialised electrical or pneumatic control requirements.

Remote controls are available as an optional extra.

WTM 1 and WTM 2These masts will support large 3 element antennas providing that the maximum operating heights specified in this table are not exceeded. The figures are for a typical antenna with a boom length of 4.3 metres and

element length of 8.2 metres giving wind loads of 45kg at 129kph

WTM 3This mast is intended for smaller antennas where maximum height is of prime importance. It is particularly useful for experimental work and field strength measurement. However, if under extremely windy conditions the operating heights are reduced to those shown in the table below, it will withstand the same wind loading as the WTM2 mast.

WTM 4This mast has been developed to withstand high head loads at heights of up to 9 metres. It will safely support a 0.6rn diameter dish at a wind speed of 160 kph or a 1.Om diameter dish at a wind speed of 100 kph. It has a retracted length of only 2.98m making it ideally suitable for fitting to the rear of telecommunications vehicles. A 2.0m extension is available if required.

Due to the wide variety of applications and methods of mounting, the masts are manufactured as basic units. It is, therefore necessary when ordering to specify the type of mast, type of winch, mounting arrangement and accessories required.

Mast Accessories

Mast Installations

Here are just some of our typical vehicle installations. We take pride in specialising for each customer’s personal requirements. We can install our masts through the roof or on a sliding roof carriage that is mounted on top of the vehicle, typical vehicles, which have this kind of installation, are 4x4 and vans, however we can fit to almost anything, even lorry cabins and containers.

Not only do we fit the mast, but we offer our skills of interior design and fitment, creating a work space and suitable facilities within the vehicle at the customers preference. Our interior fitments can range from a simple power inverter and split charger to a full installation of the following:

• Split charger• Auxiliary battery• Power inverter to invert 12V to mains• Mains sockets• Cigarette lighter socket

• Voltmeter for Aux. power• Interior Lighting• Desking and seating• Suitable work surfacing

If would like some more information on getting an installation on your vehicle or would like to speak to someone about your requirements please contact our sales team who can advise you appropriately.

Toyota Landcruiser - Sliding Roof Carriage installationFeatured here is the NL22 pneumatic which is erected using a NC3/12 12V DC compressor. In this case the NL22 mast requires a top guy assembly to steady the mast during use, these can be easily used with grounding stakes, not only does this offer directional stability of the mast but provides a steady platform to photograph from. As seen, the mast system is mounted onto a sliding roof carriage. The carriage slides rearwards and the mast is then tilted and clamped into the vertical position. A vehicle stabilising beam stabilises the vehicle when the mast is deployed and provides a safe base. Here a mast cover is used to protect the mast during transport and storage.

Toyota Landcruiser - Sliding Roof Carriage installationThis vehicle installation features an NX25 mast which is pneumatically operated by a 12V DC NC3/12 compressor (largest in the Hilomast range), offering a fully extended height of 25m. The full system fits onto a sliding roof carriage which is mounted to the roof of the vehicle making it a simple task to slide the mast back into position ready for deployment. Also featured in this installation are double mast steps, giving a firm step to stand on whilst fitting the equipment to the top of the mast or for locking off the collars during retraction. The mast rotation handle aids movement of the mast. The installation features the essential wind down jacks which prevent rear suspension compression and movement. A standard mast cover is provided to cover the mast during transport or storage. At the owners request spot lights and orange safety lights were also fitted to the roof rack.

Landrover Discovery - Through the roof installationThis through the roof installation positions the mast suitably inside the vehicle, using upper and lower Vehicle Roof Installation Kit to create a weatherproof shield that clamps to the mast. In this case the customer required a special 8m mast with a retracted height of 1.73m along with an NC2 12V compressor with remote control. Other items installed here are a waterproof mast cover, mast extension alarm and rotation handles. The interior fit consisted of replacing the seats with a non-slip workbench, complete with equipment straps, anchors and fittings. We supplied and fitted a power inverter with voltmeter, a 240V/12V battery charger and installed 12V supply sockets and interior fluorescent lights.

Mercedes Vito - Sliding Roof Carriage installationFitted to this Mercedes is a sliding roof carriage holding a NL22 telescopic Hilomast. When deployed it provides a max height of 22m. The NL22 is a guyed mast, requiring a top guying assembly to give directional support to the top of the mast. Seen above is a red guying bar, for attaching one of the top guys in place. As recommend a 12V DC NC2/12 compressor is being used offering an extension rate of approx. 4.8m per minute. Cable guides are in place to guide cables vertically to the top, where a 2” dia flange spigot can be found. Single and double climbing steps are in place for use when retracting the mast or fitting equipment onto the spigot

Mercedes Vito - Through the roof installationThis through the roof installation consists of an NL8 Hilomast with an NC2/12V compressor, using Vehicle Roof Installation Kit to create a strong weatherproof seal where the mast enters the vehicle. This specific installation included a mast rotation wheel so the mast can be easily rotated whilst inside the van. We also included a mast cover and magnetic safety switch. A power inverter and split charger were installed along with supply sockets and work surface.

LDV - Sliding Roof Carriage installationTo this vehicle we installed an NX25 mast with a sliding roof carriage. The appropriate NC3/12 12V DC was used which is fully capable of extending the mast to the max height of 25m. This installation featured a stabilising beam, cable guides, mast cover, double mast steps and the essential top guy assembly for prolonged use and windy weather conditions.

BITE (Built-in Test Equipment) FunctionYou can check the transceiver’s condition by using the BITE capability. Auto, logic, receiver, and transmitter are selectable.

A Benchmark for Ease and Convenience:User Friendly OperationThe IC-F8101 is designed for simple, straight forward operation. The Administrator/User access feature limits the functions that can be accessed by the user. The Ad-ministrator can enter the operating frequency and assign memory channels from the front panel or the remote control microphone. The following functions can be assigned to the [I], [II], and [III] function buttons: Main menu, Manager menu, Set mode, Selcall address list, RX history, and TX history.

Clear Talk FunctionThe clear talk function separates signals from noise using the DSP, and gives you clearer audio at the touch of a button.

Function button menus are shown at the bottom

of the display

Mute FunctionsThe IC-F8101 has 3 types of mute functions: call squelch, S-meter squelch and voice squelch. The call squelch function opens the squelch only when receiving a Selcall or ALE call sent intentionally to this station, and provides quiet standby.

Digital Signal Processor (DSP)The latest DSP technology improves both the transmitter and receiver per-formance. The digital IF filter provides flexible filter settings for narrow band signals.

Three types of controller configurations: Three types of controller configurations are availableto suit almost any use or installation that may be required.

Controller attached typeIdeal for standard desktop use or quick set-up in a field station

Remote control microphone type*For even more convenient use of the radio, especially during mobile operation.

Detached controller type*Stow the RF unit in a convenient place for in-vehicle use or where space is at a premium.

* For the detached controller and remote control microphone types, an optional separation cable is required. (Purchase separately)

RadioSystems &AccessoriesAnalogue/DMR to TETRA Crosslink

Based on our earlier highly successful transportable repeater, SMC have developed rugged transportable and fixed base station versions of a radio cross-link, to allow intercommunication between a TETRA system and either an analogue FM system or a DMR (Digital Mobile Radio) system. The crosslink unit features programmable transmit power outputs of up to 10W and will link any TETRA Talkgroup or Direct Mode Operation channel to either a DMR channel or talkgroup, or with the same equipment by simply changing channel, to an analogue FM two-way radio system, either normal or trunked MPT1327. Inter-network communication is thus totally transparent to the radio users.

Transportable VersionIt’s fully weatherproof and uses an internal rechargeable battery for power. A variety of charging option are available, including mains chargers, 12V DC input, solar panels, even additional transportable battery packs. The tough outer casing is available

in a variety of colours to suit individual user requirements, and both single antenna and dual antenna variants are available.

Fixed Base VersionThis is presented in a 3U high 19in rack, and may be supplied either for in-situ mounting in an existing equipment rack, or in a stand-along table top cabinet. Options include single antenna or two antenna operation, an external battery standby in case of main power failure, and comprehensive front panel channel/talkgroup mode selection, and local operator facility for direct communication.

Service & Repair

SMC has a fully equipped radio service and production facility and is the only officially appointed Codan Service Centre for Europe, Middle East and Africa. Codan trained engineers ensure that your equipment is repaired in the most economical way, supported by what is probably the largest stock of Codan spares outside of Australia.

We specialise in planning and manufacturing bespoke radio systems for customers including HM Government worldwide, research and exploratory organisations such as Operation Raleigh and the British School Expedition Society, as well as governmental organisations in Africa and the Middle East.

These range from simple analogue systems consisting of a few radios and maybe a repeater, to digital radio systems to provide city-wide or even country-wide coverage. We naturally have a team of experienced and qualified radio service engineers to back this up, and all radio production and servicing is performed to ISO9001:2008 procedures and subject to regular audits.

We do not restrict radio servicing only to products we have supplied in the past, as our engineers are skilled in a variety of radio maintenance fields, and we can offer a variety of fixed price servicing options.

Advanced Application Builder from SMC

The advanced application builder provides you with a set of powerful tools to create and edit workflows, allowing you to convert your requirements into the perfect working solution.

We give you the tools to overcome the problem of “oh but can it just do…”, so you can draw and engineer the solutions you need. This enables you to maximise your investment in digital radio networks.

It allows multiple systems to be connected together.

Below is an example of a fire alarm interface which receives alarms, faults and other data from a Honeywell Notifier alarm panel. The flow formats the data into radio friendly messages and sends these out to mobile phones and digital radios,

making sure the people who need to know receive the messages when they happen and can react quickly.

RadioSystems &AccessoriesRadio Systems Projects - Case Studies: Spear Project - Norway

South Midlands Communications Limited (SMC) are proud to be connected with the new SPEAR Project as the manufacturers of the Alumast and TS antenna support structures as well as the associated antennas to the University of Leicester (UK).

The SPEAR HF radar system located on Svalbard is designed to carry out research into the Earth’s upper atmosphere and magnetosphere, in the vicinity of the polar cap and consists of a 6x4 array of full wave, crossed dipoles designed to operate at 5.0 MHz.

By designing these antennas as rhombically broadened dipoles, it is possible to achieve an operational bandwidth of approximately +/ 20% with a gain of approx. 25 dB. Each antenna is connected to a 4 kW transmitter capable of operating continuously.

By adjusting the relative phase of pairs of dipoles, it is possible to adjust the polarisation and direction of the radiated signal.

Project SPEAR, which also has the support of scientists from Scandinavia, Germany and the USA, will be in the forefront of the international effort in space research well into the new century

Radio Systems Projects - Case Studies: Sharjah Police Radio Control Centre - UAE

Sharjah is the third largest Emirate in the United Arab Emirates, and prides itself on its culture, heritage, and forward-thinking government. Over just 50 years Sharjah has risen from houses with well-drawn water and generator-powered electricity to majestically towering buildings that rise above the desert countryside.

Its University City is one of the largest and most modern in the Arab world, and UNESCO has recently declared the Emirate the cultural capital of the Arab world. Clearly, only the very best is good enough for their people.Wide shot control room

SMC already have long-standing relationships with a number of government security organisations in the United Arab Emirates, and have supplied radio systems to a number of police forces in the Emirates.

So when the Sharjah Police sought the very best radio command and control system for their new dedicated operations centre, to enhance the control of vehicle, motorcycle and personal radios plus repeaters already supplied by SMC,it’s no wonder they came yet again to SMC for this.

SMC supplied and commissioned a combination of push-button and touch-screen operator consoles. These controlled 24 radio and telephone channels overall, including emergency call handling and the integration of GPS map-based location display of police vehicles and motorcycles.

Matching Transformers

High Power Broadcast Antenna Matching Transformer

The 50kW and 100kW series of broadcast antenna matching transformers are suitable for inclusion in systems where 200 ohm or 300 ohm open wire feeds need to be matched to a 50 ohm coaxial feeder. The units are housed in aluminium tanks, silicone oil cooled to minimise losses and a major feature is broad band operation without the use of ferrite material in the transformer design.

• 50kW average, Type HF500• 100kW average, Type HF1000• 100 kW Average + 100% AM Mod• Broad band 3-22 MHz• Very low loss• All-weather unprotected operation

These antennas require small size broad band matching networks and CTS offers the HF 1000 range providing 200 or 300 Ohm balanced outputs.

Directional Couplers

HFC1-30 = 1kW HF Directional Coupler

The HFC1-30 is a wide band directional coupler for the HF band.

The coupler uses ferrite transformer techniques resulting in an extremely small compact device for permanent installation or for field measurement purposes.

Output samples of forward and reverse power flow are provided. Being effectively a “dual” coupler the reverse signal is largely independent of the load on the forward port (and vice versa). Built in load resistors dissipate any unterminated coupled power.

N.B. at 1kW the forward output signal is 1 Watt.

*The coupler is effective over a very much wider frequency range with a small degradation in performance. Calibration charts can be supplied for those out of band frequencies, where for example, measurement of harmonics is desired.
