The history of the Hunger Group begins

component of this was a shock-absorbing

an aircraft. Then things really take off: In the

Saxo n to wn o f Fr anke nber g the firs t emp loy-

tel esc opi c cyl ind ers , whi ch are the n bui lt

    Groundbreaking new designs are created,

    The rapid and turbulent

r ise of the young company is abruptly

    stopped 10 years later.

In 1957 Walter Hunger enlarges the main

fact ory in Fra nke nbe rg, whe re in the

    meantime overhead loaders and bulldo-

zers are also prod uced . I n t he same year

he acquires a factory in Chemnitz, to

But the polit ical direction in which the

form er G DR i s go ing make s li fe mo re a nd

more difficult for the private entre-

preneur due to its t ighter tax laws and

state -con trol led dist ribu tion . The threa te-

    ned socialization of private companies

drives Walter Hunger to flee to the West

with his fami ly and a f ew of his emp loy-

    him factories in Frankenberg, Chemnitz

and Leipzig, as well as more than 1,000

Dr Walter Hunger's continuous striving to

    manufacture technically sophisticated

products of the highest level of quality has

led to the creation of a group of medium-

    size d co mpan ies.

The back grou nd to this has alwa ys been his

wish that his five chil dren shou ld one day

join the comp any for which they have recei -

ved a comme rcial and t echnic al e ducati on.

His son Armin and daughter Gisela join the

company in 1974. Today Armin lives in the

USA, where he manages the local subsidiary.

Gisela leaves the firm in 1979. Two years

later his daughter Ingrid j oins the company,

from wher e s he stil l c ontr ols the fate of the

Hunger Group today. As the Chief Executive

Offi cer and auth oriz ed sign ator y s he is full y

committed to the firm and is a guarantor that

Walter Hung er's life 's wo rk wi ll b e con tinu ed

    in the future.

Just in t ime for Dr. Walte r Hu nger' s 80th birth-

day his youngest son Jan joins the manage-

ment of the company. He studied mechanical

engineering as well as industrial engineering

and management, and worked for four years

    in a management consultancy firm.

So the re is a fre sh bre eze bl owi ng in the

Hunger family business. Dr. Walter Hunger

has achieved his goal by simultaneously

handing over his company to two younger

generations of the family. And following

them are n ow f ive g rand sons , thr ee of whom

    are already studying mechanical engineering

or business administration, certain to have

    entrepreneurial blood in their veins.

There is a f ine dif feren ce betw een an effe c-

Within the Hunger Group a good deal of attention has always

been paid to the intensive processing of metal surfaces.

The subs idi ary Hung er Schl eifm itte l G mbH ,

fou nde d in 197 9, not onl y sup pli es its

products within the Hunger group of

companies, but due to its high performance

and quality standards also works for external

customers at home and abroad. The produc-

tion range comp rise s p lasti c-co ated ceram ic

    honing stones, honing tools, diamond

honing tools and diamond stones for the

    microfinishing of metal surfaces. Their

defining qualit ies are a high removal rate,

perfect accuracy of shape and consistent

quality. The main customers are cylinder ma-

    nufacturers, and in particular machine

    builders, and the automobile industry.

New developments are tested on the

company's own premises under real condi-

tio ns a gua ran tee of abs ol ute fir st- cla ss

tech nol ogy. For the pro cess ing of larg e d ia-

meter and long ceramically coated piston

rods Hunger used their many years' experi-

ence in the manufacturing of cylinders to

develop special diamond honing stones to

meet the friction and surface finish require-

ments. Here the company drew on its many

yea rs' exp eri enc e of cyl ind er man ufa ctu re.

The sheat hing of the ceram ic honi ng ston es

is a plastic case which allows considerably

higher contact pressures, as the honing

ston e i s st abil ized at t he side and can there -

for e achi eve bet ter abr asi on per for man ce.

The plas tic sheat hing means that the honi ng

ston e ca n be used to t he f ull exte nt. Furt her-

more, the sheating acts as a "dirt wiper" to

keep the honing sludge away from the

honing stone, thus increasing the cutting

performance of the stone. Metal contact

between the honing stone and the item

being honed with the resultant develop-

ment of scoring is therefore avoided.

    breedsconfidence."
