SS STEELby Kelly Hicks. The central issue regarding SShelmets is the huge number of fakes. SS Steelis intended to assist the collector in determin-ing the fakes from the real thing. It providesinformation specific to their paint, decals andgeneral characteristics. During full-scale produc-tion of the M-35 series of helmets, each of thefive German helmet makers installed their ownpattern of SS decal on helmets at the factory. This trend is evident in about 90 percent of M-35 specimens analyzed; 96 percent of M-40 andM-42 helmets. Examples of dozens of originalhelmets show clear evidence of this maker-to-decal correlation. For the first time, this rela-tionship has been analyzed and presented. Itwill thwart the counterfeiters on a fundamen-tal level. In addition to decal analysis, SS Steelexplores the reuse and reissue of helmets, dueto supply shortages and other factors. Varia-tions, unusual and rare helmets, and foreignvolunteer SS helmets are also explored. Severalhelmets are presented with their documentedhistory, showing how research can be con-ducted on helmets that bear the name of theirformer SS owner. A must-have book for seriouscollectors of helmets of Germany’s Third Reichelite. RANDALL MILITARY MODELSFighters, Bowies and Full Tang Knives by Rob-ert E. Hunt. In his second book, Hunt contin-ues the process of identifying, describing anddating fighting knives produced in the dramaticearly days of the Randall experience. This newvolume provides a vast amount of material, carefully organized and presented to enable thereader to further his own research in the areasmost interesting to him.SECTION 1... includes photos of a number ofrare Model 1all-purpose fighting knives.SECTION 2...The oldest style of personal pro-tection knife influencing Western civilization hasbeen the double-edged type...a stabbing knife. This section features some of these knives andthe “standardized” design adopted by Randall.SECTION 3...Recognition of several modelsdeveloped during the span of years when troopswere sent to Southeast Asia, as these knives areinseparable from this conflict.SECTION 4...The heart of this book is the sec-tion on “carried knives” which features Randallsthat have at least one of the several distinguish-ing requirements qualifying it to be considereda military model used in wartime. Includes morethan 25 examples, most never-before-photo-graphed.SECTION 5...The Bowie knife was all but for-gotten when the movie industry revived inter-est with Alan Ladd’s The Iron Mistress. Recog-nizing that some of these models were carriedin combat, shows the several distinct types thatRandall created with a historical theme.SECTION 6...Visual comparisons serve to teachthe subtleties in the development stages andevolution of the Randall knife. In this section, pairings appear without their sheaths, provid-ing a better image of the knives depicted. Thispresentation allows the reader an opportunityto observe and compare knives on their own,in various pairs, sets and groups of like models.SECTION 7...In the eyes of some, the sheathmakes the knife. Victory of Faith (Sieg Des Glaubens) DVD.Found after 70 years, Leni Riefenstahl’s Victoryof Faith, is again available. A key work in theevolution of Nazi propaganda, Victory of Faithprovides an ambitious record of the 1933 NaziParty rally at Nuremberg. Released in early1934, the film was enthusiastically promotedby the Nazi Party in presenting itself to theGerman people. Later that same year, however,Hitler oversaw a bloody purge of many of his“old comrades,” notably Brownshirt leaderErnst Röhm, whose leading role at the 1933rally – second only to Hitler – figures promi-nently in Riefenstahl’s film. Overnight, Röhmbecame persona non grata, and all referencesto him were obliterated from the public record. The thousands of prints of Victory of Faith incirculation across Germany were tracked downand destroyed and nobody was able to see thislandmark film. Until now: a copy of Victory ofFaith, lying unnoticed in Great Britain sinceRiefenstahl visited there in early 1934, has sur-faced, providing what appears to be a com-plete version. Though far from her masterwork, the film offers a fascinating first draft of the ideasand techniques Riefenstahl would pull off sopowerfully one year later in Triumph of the Will.Germany, 1934, B&W, 70 minutes, Germanwith English subtitles. Shemagh. In extreme climates, the local inhab-itants usually know clothing best. In the desert, this means a shemagh to protect your headagainst the sun. These are a favorite with theSAS. Here’s what The SAS Encyclopedia says,“...the most effective type is the local shemaghhead cloth, which is often dyed yellow. It trapsa layer of cooler air over the head and providesprotection for the neck. The shemagh is alsolarge enough to be used as an improvised shel-ter if required.” Cotton, soft finish is easy onyour face and neck (makes a great scarf).
