I am extremely honoured to be the new Chairman of the 12th edition of the Bermuda Captive Conference. It has been an easy transition due to the quality of professionals contributing to make this conference worthy of the world’s premier captive domicile.

To this end, I am very excited this year to be unveiling our inaugural Fred Reiss Lifetime Achievement Award which will honour both the person’s name it carries as well as our first winner. Both persons are extremely deserving, having contributed significantly to both Bermuda and the global captive industry.

We continue to build on our history of having knowledgeable speakers presenting on topics that are relevant to all aspects of the industry. Specifically this year, we have topics that reflect Bermuda’s strengths, including our experience in insuring energy risks, employee benefits and emerging cyber risks. We are especially honoured to have Joe Flower speaking on the ever-evolving US healthcare industry and the impact it will have on all aspects of that business, including insurance.

We appreciate that a conference is both a place for learning and a focal point for networking. We are very pleased to have a variety of social activities and networking breaks to facilitate new and continued relationships. We are also pleased to be continuing with our family programme offering opportunities for our loved ones to enjoy the beauty of the island.

This is also our second year of the Bermuda Captive Hall of Fame– our way of acknowledging the contribution that Bermuda’s longest established captives have made to our island. We look forward to having many of these inductees present to collect their awards.

This conference continues to be successful as a result of the generous support of our valued sponsors and exhibitors, both of which are out in record numbers this year. We appreciate their support and encourage you to visit them during the conference. I would specifically also like to thank the Bermuda Captive Conference committee members and the Bermuda Captive Owners Association for the time and effort they have contributed over the last year.

Please take time to complete the evaluations at the end of each session as we value your input as we plan the 2017 conference –scheduled for September 11–13, 2017 due to the timing of the America’s Cup in Bermuda next year.

As the new President of Bermuda Insurance Management Association (BIMA), it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the 12th Bermuda Captive Conference. I speak for all of us involved in BIMA when I say how delighted we are to have you here in Bermuda to learn, participate, share and experience all Bermuda and the 2016 conference have to offer.

The conference continues to go from strength to strength and it would not be achievable, firstly, without YOUR support. We’re also grateful for the support of our fabulous sponsors, and last but not least, for the commitment, time and effort put in by the volunteers of the conference committee, very ably led by new BCC Chair David Gibbons and the Bermuda Captive Owners Association (BCOA).

This year’s robust agenda, inaugural Fred Reiss Lifetime Achievement Award, and the second annual Hall of Fame Awards again reflect Bermuda’s position as the premier captive domicile. Throughout the conference, you will have the opportunity to network and meet other industry professionals and of course, if you so wish, explore and see all the beauty our wee rock has to offer. Overall, prepare yourself to be challenged, excited and inspired.

I’m sure you’ll all agree it has been and continues to be an exciting and challenging time for the captive industry overall, no more so than in Bermuda, and we will all have to continue to grow and adapt to events and evolving legislation, both at home and globally, to ensure our clients’ needs are met. We should all be very proud of where we are today, but be prepared to continue the hard work we know is required for continued success. In this regard, BIMA will continue to work with government, the Bermuda Monetary Authority, the BCOA, the Bermuda Business Development Agency (BDA) and a wide range of industry bodies both in Bermuda and abroad in ensuring a strong future for the Bermuda captive insurance industry.

To this end, I encourage attendees to engage BIMA members, and vice versa, on activities over the past few years, and please do not hesitate to reach out to me personally on anything you feel requires our focus.

To all who have been involved in the Bermuda Captive Conference to date—from captive owners, service providers, and all industry experts and attendees—your support and dedication is truly the greatest asset.

Throughout this conference, I ask you to stay engaged, keep us proactive and help us shape the future of the conference and Bermuda’s captive industry.

My personal respect and thanks goes out to all of you!

Jill Husbands, the Chairman and Managing Director of Marsh IAS Management Services (Bermuda), has been selected the winner of the inaugural Fred Reiss Lifetime Achievement Award, to be presented at this year’s Bermuda Captive Conference.

Husbands joined Marsh in 1984 as an insurance officer with responsibility for a diverse portfolio of captive companies after gaining experience in both the Bermuda and London markets as an underwriter and broker. Since then, she has held various positions at the company and was named Chairman this year. She is a member of the Insurance Advisory Committee (IAC) and is Chair of the Board of Governors of the Bermuda College.

“Jill is an incredibly deserving recipient of this first-time award to mark Fred’s legacy,” said conference Chair David Gibbons. “Her contribution to this conference, our industry, and Bermuda as a whole has been invaluable and, like Fred himself, she is a remarkable professional who has set an example for all of us in this industry.”

The award is named in honour of Reiss, a pioneering Ohio engineer who conceived of the idea of “self-insurance,” by which corporations could manage their own risks through a dedicated subsidiary. Starting with American steel companies, Reiss pursued the concept in Bermuda, launching the first captive in 1962. The sector recorded exponential growth over the next five decades, distinguishing Bermuda as the world captive leader and fuelling the foundation of the island’s entire insurance industry.

The award will be presented at the official opening of this year’s conference on the afternoon of Monday, June 13, at the Fairmont Southampton.

“I am thrilled and honored to be selected as the winner of the inaugural Fred Reiss Lifetime Achievement Award,” said Husbands. “I have loved my 32 years in the captive insurance industry and have witnessed many changes, innovations and significant growth in our sector. It is gratifying to be recognised by my peers and I am especially proud to win an award that pays tribute to the founding father of our industry.”

Reiss was born in Cleveland, Ohio on March 21, 1925 and died at age 68 in Bermuda on November 18, 1993. He attended Harvard University on a full scholarship. Married three times, he has five children, Steven, Larry, Claudia, Nicolette and Jonathan. As well as his industry contributions, he was known as a philanthropist who made major donations to the Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) and Saltus Grammar School, among other non-profits.

“The Reiss family is humbled and honoured by the Bermuda Captive Conference’s recognition of Fred’s career and achievements,” said his son, Jonathan, Chief Financial Officer of Hamilton Group and a BIOS director. “The Bermuda insurance market continues to go from strength to strength and that’s largely because it is so attractive to high-integrity entrepreneurs and visionary leaders like Fred.

“I have been a client of Jill Husbands as her team incubated Hamilton Re when it was initially formed, a service Marsh has provided for hundreds of insurers of all shapes and sizes,” Reiss added. “Jill is exactly the type of high-integrity, solution-oriented leader who makes our marketplace great and I know my father would be delighted with her selection for this award.”

Gibbons said organisers of the conference, now in its 12th year, felt it was time to celebrate the collaboration of “outstanding professionals” like Husbands. “This year, we thought it was time to launch an award to formally recognise the consistent contributions of people in our industry who have not only shaped this conference, but have made a significant contribution to Bermuda’s captive sector as a whole.”

“We were honoured the Reiss family allowed us to attach the name of Fred, the acknowledged father of our captive industry—without whom, none of this would exist,” noted Gibbons. “We are doubly honoured to have the first winner be someone as accomplished as Jill.”
