Jack is a newly enrolled child with Down syndrome

He appears pro-social but talks less

Sometimes he becomes aggressive

Being new to Toronto, his parents requires information

about support services for Jack’s issue.

I feel that Jack needs extra help and care.

His family needs patient to take care of him.

I know a child with Down syndrome can do everything

like other children with some extra help and care.

Adults require developing positive attitude towards a

child with Down syndrome.

Is a genetic disorder due to problem in the chromosome.

Is not a hereditary problem, and does not run in families.

The reason why some babies are born with Down syndrome

is not known yet.

Doctors also call it Trisomy 21

This problem is usually identified at birth.

Down syndrome causes delays in physical and cognitive

development of the children.

Children with Down syndrome have poor muscle tone,

and a typical facial appearance.

They tend to learn more slowly than others, and have

speech delays.

Cure is not documented yet for this chromosomal Disorder

Children with Down Syndrome need to have-

Compassionate counseling and enhanced support

Regular checkup to prevent secondary complications

Medications to support healthy living

Surgery if required

How to Manage Down syndrome?

Problem with Jack: less speech that sometimes makes him frustrated and aggressive

My teaching strategies would be to:

Focus on developing vocabulary with easy words

Provide with additional resources according to his needs

Break the lesson into chunks for better engagement

Ensure congenial environment so that Jack practice

communication with adults and peers

Encourage Jack routine communications

My teaching strategies will also include:

Caring Jack in activities that have potential risks

Guiding other children to participate with Jack in all

activities

Consulting with Jack’s parents, speech pathologist

and early intervention teacher

Setting Jack’s sitting position, during group activities,

so that he can see the front of the group

Jack needs love like other children, and also care for his special need. Play with him.

You may be surprised with Jack's potential, don’t underestimate his abilities. Appreciate saying his name.

Consult speech, occupational, and physical therapists. Keep track of Jack’s IEP. Integrate your child into the community as much as

possible.

Create home environment aligned to Jack’s needs and abilities.

Buy for him toys of different sizes and textures.

Don’t be frustrated to repeat any activity many times before

he can do it well.

Accept that Jack’s development milestones will be at his own

pace and in his own way.

Comply with the medical advice for Jack.
