Transcript of Dovercourt-News FEBRUARY 2015
Dovercourt-NewsFROM THE PRESIDENT
Greetings Dovercourt!
As our newly elected Executive prepares for another year of Community service let me begin by saying how encouraging it was to see so many of our neighbours at our last Community League AGM. It was a real shot in the arm for me and the other board members to see the interest and support of our Community at that meeting. The event was a great success and I would like to thank Susan, Shauna and their AGM group for advertising, setting up and organizing the event. It was fun to have Councillor Esslinger share some of her thoughts, give away Deon’s Jersey and to have the opportunity to meet and reacquaint ourselves with some of our neighbours. Thanks to those who attended, I hope we can build on that evening for future meetings and events.
If you would like to attend future meetings they are always scheduled in the newsletter and on our website (www.dovercourtcl.ca). Please feel free to come and listen, if you would like to present anything or ask questions please contact Kate, Jo-Anne or me to get added to the agenda. Typically a “general” (vs Executive) meeting is more conducive to extra guests.
2015 is a very exciting year for our Community; Dovercourt will be 60. As our Sexennial Anniversary year begins we are very interested in having a community celebration as part of Community Day in September. A few things we are hoping to organize are a community dance, fireworks, afternoon BBQ, a celebration of our community’s history and recognition of some of the people who Dovercourt has spawned over the decades. (It might also be nice to have a flag raising ceremony if only we could find a few people to make a flag pole.) If you are interested in helping or if you have any ideas about an activity etc. please contact Cindy who will be helping to coordinate the day. Preparations are beginning soon, so please act sooner rather than later.
I have been trying to finesse this little joke for years: “while the US is a melting pot, Canada is often considered more of a mosaic with our various groups celebrating their “Canadianism” through the diversity which makes us Canada. Please celebrate our community and our country by helping keep the “u” in neighbourhood, the US takes the “u” out of everything: neighbor, color etc…”
On the subject of the neighbourhood I am very sorry to announce that one of our past presidents and a great friend of Dovercourt, Kelly Brunlees passed away on January 15 after a brave battle with cancer. My thoughts and prayers go out to Roberta and his family after this great loss, he was taken far too early. Kelly’s passing as well as other recent losses including the death of RCMP Constable Wynn really illustrate how fragile our time on earth is and hopefully helps each of us realize how important our friends and family are. Please take a moment today to call your parents, kids, friends or whoever and let them know that you value them, love them and hope they are having a great day. I like to believe that one gets what one gives in life and that a life dedicated to family, community and friends will feel satisfying on my last day.
In happier news, we putting the finishing touches on our 2015 Milk Jug Funspiel. It will be held on the evening of February 14 and I am looking forward to seeing the rink transformed into a big curling centre. Last funspiel Mike had it all painted and professional looking, I hope we can expect more of the same. If you haven’t t yet registered, time is running out, we need your forms to the hall by WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 10. There may be late registrations on “game day” but we may be full, don’t chance it.
On the subject of registrations, February is SOCCER REGISTRATION MONTH for minor soccer. We will be holding community based registrations on Feb 15 and 25 and there will be a final Zone central registration on March 10. If you want your child(ren) to play soccer, please try to attend one of these registrations. There will be late fees associated with late registrations. You need child’s Alberta Health number, a community league membership (Available for purchase at registration), a cheque for registration fees and a volunteer bond cheque. More details are available later in the “soccer news” section and at registration.
Thank you again for giving me another chance to be President, although I joke it is more of a sentence than a term, I value our community and enjoy serving its residents. Thanks too to our Executive members both new and returning, I am sure we will have an exciting and productive year.
Happy Birthday Dovercourt, see you in the ‘hood, G

Please Note: Sand is provided as a Courtesy
Pick up free sand at the community leagues to use on your icy sidewalks and walkways. Remember to bring your own container when you visit your local community sandbox.
Although every attempt is made to keep sand boxes filled, crews fill them as time permits. Activities such as plowing, blading and sanding roads take priority over additional courtesy services like filling sandboxes.
Property owners are responsible for keeping adjacent sidewalks sanded and clear of ice.

MUNICIPAL ENFORCEMENT UPDATE Happy Fall! I hope you all had a wonderful summer.
Now that we are moving towards our winter season, I wanted to ask the league to pass on some important information to its residents.
Snow on sidewalks
As a winter city, we all know that snow, and the removal of it, is inevitable. We want to ensure our sidewalks are as safe as possible for those that need to use them. Our Community Standards Bylaw asks that property owners or tenants keep their adjacent city sidewalk clear of snow and ice to the pavement. It is important to shovel the sidewalk as soon as possible after each snowfall to avoid a buildup that can be then difficult to deal with.
If someone in your community has difficulty with shovelling, encourage them to call 311 and ask about the Capital City Clean Up Snow Angels program. Alternatively, perhaps your community also has a strong volunteer group that might be able to assist those in need this winter.
Community members should be aware that there is a $100 fine associated with failure to keep the sidewalks clear of snow, as well, the cost for the contractor to clear the sidewalk is billed back to the property owner. Please note sand can be used as a temporary measure to provide traction in icy areas. Free sand is available at community leagues throughout Edmonton; visit Edmonton.ca to locate the nearest sand station.
Recreational Vehicles
For those neighbourhoods with front driveways and no alleys, November 1 is the date when all recreational vehicles (including motorhomes, travel trailers, fifth wheels and campers not mounted to trucks), should no longer be parked on the front driveway. This restriction runs through to March 31.
News From The City
New Building Height Regulations going to Public Hearings
A public hearing scheduled for February 9, 2015
Submit your comments as soon as possible to city planner, James Veltkamp If you would like more details before submitting your comments, go to www.edmonton.ca and search for Bylaw Text Amendments. Click on the Height and Grade project.
Latest infill housing strategies begin public hearings 2015
November. 17, 2014 – Subdivision of RF1 House lots and Changes to Garage/Garden Suite Regulations going to Public Hearing February 2015.
On November 12, the Executive Committee of Council heard from the public about proposed bylaw amendments to allow for more garage and garden suites, and narrower (7.6 m) lots throughout RF1 neighbourhoods. Executive Committee motioned to have City Administration prepare bylaw changes
This motion takes Edmonton one step closer to encouraging small scale infill housing which will provide more housing in existing neighbourhoods, thus potentially making more use of existing infrastructure, schools, league facilities and programs. If done properly, infill housing could enhance neighbourhoods.
