The HorrorsAn A to Z of Funny Thoughts on Awful Things
Charles Demers
A darkly mirthful and alphabetical approach to very bad things from comedian Charles Demers.
comedian-author charlie demers, whose brain-bending brand of black humour will be familiar to followers of cbc Radio’s The Debaters, offers his madcap perspective in a new collection of essays highlighting a wide range of topics under the heading of Bad Things. The Horrors is presented abecedarian-style, despoiling a beloved children’s book tradition in order to explore personal hangups that range from the slightly awkward to the down-right terrible.
Beginning with ‘A’ for ‘Adolescence,’ Demers recalls his sexless teenage years spent in a Trotskyist sect, and ‘B’ for
‘Bombing’ offers a first-person account of the agonies of stand-up comedy gone wrong. ‘E’ for ‘End of the World’ explores the wacky world of Preppers (YouTube how-to-prepare-for-the-apocalypse experts), while ‘F’ for ‘Fat’ explains what life is like for those with both testicles and breasts. Other essays creep toward the pain side of the hilarity/agony line: ‘D’ for
‘Depression’ and ‘M’ for ‘Motherlessness’ traverse topics that more balanced minds might hesitate to make light of.
Fortunately, Demers does not let tact or sensibility deter him from pushing humour to its hysterical limit in order to examine our deepest fears. With artful insight, he never minimizes the very real pain inherent in some topics and uses comedy as a catharsis rather than a numbing agent. Dark, smart and funny, in the sunny world of The Book of Awesome and The Happiness Project, The Horrors will be a shadow... or at least a shadow puppet.
Charles DeMers is an author, stand-up comedian, and adjunct professor of creative writing at the University of British Columbia. His collection of essays, Vancouver Special (Arsenal Pulp Press, 2009), was shortlisted for the Hubert Evans bc Book Prize for Non-Fiction. He is also the author of a novel, The Prescription Errors (Insomniac Press, 2009). As a stand-up comic, he has performed for national television and radio audiences, and at the Just For Laughs Festival. He is one of the most frequently returning stars of cbc Radio’s smash-hit comedy The Debaters, with a weekly listening audience of 750,000. Demers lives in Vancouver, bc.

After the SandsEnergy and Ecological Security for Canadians
GorDon laxer
A bold plan to address climate change and provide energy security for Canadians.
After the SAndS outlines a vision and a road map to transitioning Canada to a low-carbon society.
Despite its oil abundance, with no strategic reserves, Canada is woefully unprepared for the next global oil supply crisis. There’s no good reason for Canadians to use much more oil per capita than people in other sparsely populated, northern countries like Norway, Finland and Sweden—nations that use 27 to 39 percent less oil per person. In After the Sands, political economist Gordon Laxer proposes a bold strategy of deep conservation and a Canada-first perspective to ensure that all Canadians have sufficient energy at affordable prices.
The most achievable way to gain energy security is to supply Canadians with their own oil, natural gas and renewable energy. And the best way to cut carbon emissions is by phasing out Canada’s role as a carbon-fuel exporter.
Canada has all the oil, gas and coal needed to transition to a low-carbon future. Remarkable hydro power resources give Canadians a large base of renewable energy, which can be expanded with wind, solar, geothermal and biomass. Few countries have these options in adequate quantities. But, as Laxer argues, Canada will not get there until we overcome the power of vested interests and untangle the trade agreements that block Canadians from secure and fair access to the nation’s own energy resources.
Impeccably researched, After the Sands is critical reading for anyone concerned with climate change and the future of Canada.
gorDon laxer, PhD, is the founding director and former head of Parkland Institute at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. A political economist and professor emeritus at the University of Alberta, Laxer is a prominent public intellectual. He has been widely published in both newspapers and academic journals, and has authored several books, including Open for Business: The Roots of Foreign Ownership in Canada (Oxford University Press).

White EskimoKnud Rasmussen’s Fearless Journey into the Heart of the Arctic
stephen r. Bown
The first full-scale biography of the dauntless explorer who opened up the culture, the language, and the life of the Arctic.
though less known today than contemporaries like Amundsen and Peary, Knud Rasmussen (1879–1933) was one of the most intriguing of the great early 20th century arctic explorers. Born and raised in Greenland, and part Inuit on his mother’s side, Rasmussen could shoot a gun and harness a team of sled dogs by the time he was eight. Nevertheless he was well versed in the civilized arts and came to exploration after failing to make a career as an opera singer in Europe. He was obviously more at home on the ice floes than the stage, and undertook some of the most astounding feats of endurance in the annals of polar exploration including his record-setting 18,000-mile “Great Sled Journey”—the first to traverse the Northwest Passage by dogsled. More impressively, he travelled without the elaborate preparations and large support staffs employed by other explorers, surviving with only a few Inuit assistants and living off the land. He once explained his approach by saying, “[As a child] my playmates were native Greenlanders; from the earliest boyhood I played and worked with the hunters, so even the hardships of the most strenuous sledge-trips became pleasant routine for me.”
Despite his extraordinary physical prowess, Rasmussen was one of the most intellectual of the great explorers, more interested in scientific study than glamorous feats, producing (among many other works) a ten-volume account documenting Inuit spirituality and culture, an accomplishment that earned him the title “the father of Eskimology.”
In this first full-length biography, Stephen R. Bown brings Rasmussen’s inspiring story to English readers in all its richness, giving White Eskimo the readability of a good novel.
stephen r. Bown is the author of many critically acclaimed, award winning titles including most recently, Last Viking (D&M, 2012) which was named amongst the Globe and Mail Best 100 Books of the Year. Born in Ottawa, he now lives in the Canadian Rockies with his wife and two children.

You Will Wear a White ShirtFrom the Northern Bush to the Halls of Power
niCk siBBeston
“Sibbeston’s memoir tells the fascinating and heartfelt story of his struggles, both political and personal, to achieve real change for the people he served so well.”
—Jean Chrétien, former prime minister of Canada
The compelling autobiography of Nick Sibbeston, residential school survivor and one of the North’s most influential leaders.
growing up in a remote northern community, nick Sibbeston had little reason to believe he would one day fulfill his mother’s ambition of holding a career where he would “wear a white shirt.” Torn away from his family and placed in residential school at the age of five, Sibbeston endured loneliness, callous treatment and sexual assault by an older boy, but discovered a love of learning that would compel him to complete a law degree and pursue a career in politics.
As a young, firebrand politician, Sibbeston played an instrumental role during a critical moment in Northwest Territories politics, advocating tirelessly to support the economic and political development of First Nations people in the North, and participating in early discussions of the separation of Nunavut. Sibbeston’s career advanced in great strides, first as an mla, then one of Canada’s first Aboriginal lawyers, then as a cabinet minister and eventually premier of the Northwest Territories. Finally, he was appointed to the Senate of Canada, where he continues to represent the people of Canada’s North, not least in advocating for the generations affected by residential school policies.
Although his years at residential school compelled Sibbeston to fight tirelessly for the rights of Aboriginal northerners, they also left a mark on his mental health, fuelling continual battles with anxiety, depression and addiction. It was only in later life that healing began to take place, as he battled his demons openly, supported not just by the medical community but also by his strong faith and the love of his wife and family.
nICk sIBBeston is a lawyer, distinguished member of the Northwest Territories (nwt) Legislative Assembly and a former premier. In 1970, Mr. Sibbeston was elected to a four-year term on the North West Territorial Council. And from 1979–91, he was elected to the nwt Legislative Assembly. Sibbeston has worked for the Government of nwt as Justice Specialist and as a Public Administrator for Deh Cho Health & Social Services and served four years on the Canadian Human Rights Panel/Tribunal. He is a current member of the Senate committees on Aboriginal Peoples, and Energy, Environment and Natural Resources. Mr. Sibbeston and his wife, Karen, live in Fort Simpson, nwt.

That’s Why I’m a JournalistTop Canadian Reporters Tell Their Most Unforgettable Stories
mark BulGutCh
A compendium of career highlights from prominent Canadian journalists.
news stories are like collective memories, encapsulating the most iconic moments in recent history around the world. But to those who work in journalism, up-close involvement with these stories can also be life-changing. In That’s Why I’m a Journalist, veteran broadcaster Mark Bulgutch interviews 44 prominent Canadian journalists, who each share their behind-the-scenes accounts of some of the most memorable stories of their careers and describe the moment that made them say to themselves, “That’s why I’m a journalist.”
Although many of the contributors’ stories are related to their roles in the most high-profile events of the 20th and 21st centuries, from the fall of the Berlin Wall to 9/11, here too are reflections on quieter and more intimate moments that had a deep personal impact. Peter Mansbridge talks about a trip to Vimy Ridge on the hundredth anniversary of World War I, Adrienne Arsenault recalls bringing together old friends separated by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Terence McKenna recounts what it’s like to worry about being kidnapped as part of the job and Wendy Mesley reflects on the satisfaction of asking tough questions—and uncovering the truth.
Together, these enthralling and varied accounts provide an intimate understanding of the people we see on camera and hear on the radio. As Bulgutch argues, modern journalism is undergoing existential threats. News has never been more accessible yet, paradoxically, important news has become harder to find, often buried by pseudo-news of celebrity, lifestyle tips and the latest viral video of a water-skiing squirrel. The stories in this book serve as reminders of the importance of real journalists and real journalism.
Mark BulgutCh’s own entry into journalism started with a paper route. After journalism school, he worked for the cbc News for over 35 years. He was the senior editor of The National for 11 years and retired as Senior Executive Producer of tv News, which put him in the control room for all major special events, from election nights to commemorations of Remembrance Day. He is the recipient of 14 Gemini awards, 4 rtnda Awards, the Canadian Journalism Foundation Award of Excellence and the Canadian Association of Broadcasters Gold Ribbon Award. He currently lives in Toronto, on.

The Shadows We Mistake for LoveStories
tom wayman
Short stories based in BC’s West Kootenay region from multiple award-winning author and poet Tom Wayman.
living in the shadow oF the selkirk mountains in southeastern bc, the inhabitants of the Slocan Valley are tied together by magical and dramatic geography, but also by an intricate web of shared history, common needs and the deep and complex relationships that evolve in isolated locations, where everyone is visible and there is no anonymity. Tom Wayman’s new short story collection, The Shadows We Mistake for Love, brings together loggers and environmentalists, marijuana growers and small-town lawyers, back-country skiers and homesteaders, to overlap and coalesce into a brilliant portrait of rural life and place.
Beneath the valley’s idyllic surface, conflict and tension flourish among its inhabitants, ranging from the intimate to the political. In the title story, a young woman is drawn into an environmental activist group and a relationship with the group’s charismatic leader, but having a child quickly brings home the painful realities of the new life she’s chosen. Other stories depict the changes that are altering the social landscape of the valley, from the ubiquity of the Internet to an influx of affluent new residents. These developments emphasize the ways in which the sometimes rawer and more visible dramas of rural life reflect similar tensions in communities everywhere.
toM wayMan has published three books of fiction, as well as more than a dozen collections of poems, six poetry anthologies and three collections of essays. His previous short story collection Boundary Country (Thistledown Press, 2007) was shortlisted for the Danuta Gleed award. His poetry has been awarded the Canadian Authors’ Association medal for poetry, the A.J.M. Smith Prize, first prize in the usa Bicentennial Poetry Awards competition, and the Acorn-Plantos Award; in 2003 he was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Literary Award. He has taught widely at the post-secondary level in Canada and the us, most recently (2002-2010) at the University of Calgary. He has been a resident of bc’s West Kootenay region since 1989.

Of Myths and SticksHockey Facts, Fictions and Coincidences
kevin GiBson
A lively compendium of little-known hockey trivia from Kevin Gibson, tSn’s one-man Research, Stats and Information Department.
as engaging as the great game itselF, the stories behind the National Hockey League are entertaining, fascinating and, at times, unbelievable. Faux facts emerge from urban legends, conspiracy theories and coincidences, leaving sports fans to debate truth and fiction in the world of hockey trivia. Few are better qualified to both debunk falsehoods and nail down amazing facts than tsn stats archaeologist Kevin Gibson, whose book Of Myths and Sticks blows the whistle on all hockey matters from the mainstream to the obscure.
What was the date of the first nhl game? Who scored the first goal and which team won? Did Gordie Howe ever actually get a Gordie Howe hat trick? Gibson offers definitive answers to these fundamental questions, but also contributes fascinating background nobody else thought to ask about, such as game-time weather, contract disputes and the flu epidemic that claimed the lives of two players and cancelled the 1919 Stanley Cup Final. Gibson scores laughs with true facts from between the posts, noting that legendary Canadiens goalie Georges Vézina sired 24 children (“he was known for saves on the ice and scoring off”), and that the Quebec Bulldogs’ shameful record of 4–20 may have been due, in part, to the worst nickname ever for a goaltender (“Holes”). The myth of the Original Six is down-sized to the Original One, as Gibson points out that the Montreal Canadiens is the only team to have been around at the start of the nhl and to have retained their original team name.
Other highlights include hall-of-famers, hall-of-shamers and an extensive “On This Date” chapter that highlights 366 trivia-worthy moments from 95 years of hockey history. Combining extensive research, humour and keen curiosity, Of Myths and Sticks is hockey’s version of MythBusters—what’s true, what’s not, and how can we make finding out almost as entertaining as watching the game.
kevIn gIBson is tsn’s one-man Research, Stats and Information Department. He is a regular on Mike Richards’ In the Morning show on tsn Radio 1050 and a popular presence on Twitter (@tsnResearch).

Happy Hens & Fresh EggsKeeping Chickens in the Kitchen Garden, with 100 Recipes
siGne lanGforD
Adding even a few hens to the garden cuts down on pests, enriches the soil, and provides hours of feathered fun, all while supplying the kitchen with abundant fresh eggs. Packed with anecdotes, advice and recipes, this engaging book will entertain, inform, and lead readers down the garden path … all the way to the coop and back into the kitchen!
today’s renaissance oF the backyard Flock is driven by a growing desire for healthy organic ingredients, food security and animal welfare—and while hunger might be “the best sauce,” a dash of self-sufficiency is remarkably satisfying too. As communities from Victoria to St. John’s amend urban bylaws to allow backyard flocks, more and more Canadians are enjoying the pleasures and rewards of keeping hens in the garden.
In addition to tending her family’s flock as a child, Signe Langford has kept chickens in her urban Toronto yard for almost a decade. Her book is stuffed full of practical advice on keeping the garden both gorgeous and productive and hens happy and healthy. In addition to answering questions about coop construction, year-round egg production and whether or not a rooster is really needed, she covers the best breeds for backyards—from the Canadian winter-tough Chanticlear to peewee bantams to blue-egg producing Ameraucana.
A self-admitted “biomass addict,” Langford explains how hens are the happiest garden helpers anyone could ever have. Give them kitchen scraps and let them visit the compost pile: they’ll enrich and aerate the soil, all while eating as many bugs as they can get their beaks on. Langford also shares what plants should be scratched and what to sow to support the flock—from edible flowers and foliage to a hens’ herbal healing bed.
In the kitchen, Langford tells why coddling can be a good thing when it comes to eggs; how to salt-cure yolks and how to dash off a classic French omelette baveuse.
From Blue Cheese and Caramelized Onion Tart to Vanilla Coeur a la Crème with Blueberry Compote, Langford includes dozens of simple and elegant recipes from her own kitchen, as well as from celebrated contributors like Vikram Vij, Laura Calder, Ted Reader and John Higgins.
Illustrated with beautiful photographs, illustrations and garden plans, Happy Hens & Fresh Eggs is sure to become a favourite of avid and aspiring backyard farmers alike.
sIgne langforD is a chef, Toronto food writer and backyard chicken fanatic. She is a frequent contributor to The Globe and Mail, National Post, Toronto Life, Canadian Living and Garden Maker.

Victory Gardens for BeesA DIY Guide to Saving the Bees
lori weiDenhammer
A hive of knowledge about gardening for the bees.
who knew modern civilization may be brought down, not by plagues or war, but by bees? Or, more correctly, by no bees? This book investigates the growing problem of bee mortality and offers practical measures we can all take to help. In ecological terms, bees play a critical role in the survival of many plant communities and continuation of life on this planet. No pollination, no seeds. No seeds, no future.
Now that bees are facing unprecedented levels of die-off caused by a toxic mixture of environmental stresses, a community-based effort is needed to make gardens, fields and landscapes healthy sanctuaries for bees. Just as citizens banded together to produce Victory Gardens to offset the perilous food shortages of World Wars I and II, now a similarly vital level of collective effort is needed to make our gardens into lifesaving shelters for these essential creatures.
Planning a bee-friendly space can provide a beautiful and bountiful selection of edible crops, native plants and fragrant ornamentals, as well as herbs that have medicinal properties for both pollinators and people. With the help of ten inspiring garden plans and planting guides, Weidenhammer shows how bee-friendly plants can be used in creative combinations for plots and pots of all sizes, and are easily grown by novices and seasoned gardeners alike. In the spirit of the history-making Victory Gardens, readers will learn how to pack optimum benefits into a limited space for the survival of hive and home, and backyard beekeepers will learn great planting strategies for making sure their honeybees are healthy and have ample food to overwinter.
Victory Gardens for Bees is also buzzing with diy projects that will provide nesting sites and essential supplies for precious pollinators. With plenty of photographs to help readers identify bees of all stripes, beekeeping tips and other interesting bee-phemera, this book is a must-have for anyone who wants to do their part to save bees.
lorI weIDenhaMMer is a Vancouver-based interdisciplinary artist originally from Cactus Lake, Saskatchewan. Her father kept bees when she was a child, and years later, she found herself pulled into the culture and science of bees and caring for beehives in her backyard. For the past seven years she has been exploring the persona Madame Beespeaker at venues across the country, sharing the tradition of “telling the bees.” She also regularly appears as the Queen Bee at schools and community events. As an artist and educator Weidenhammer works with students of all ages on identifying native plants, eating locally, gardening for pollinators and guerrilla gardening.

My Father’s Sonfarley mowat
A classic wartime memoir from one of Canada’s most treasured writers.
the Follow-up to And no BirdS SAng, Farley mowat’s memoir My Father’s Son charts the course of a family relationship in the midst of extreme trial. Taking place during Mowat’s years in the Italian Campaign, the memoir is mostly told through original letters between Mowat and his mother, Helen, and his father, Angus, a World War I veteran and librarian. Written between 1943 and 1945, the correspondence depicts the coming of age of a young writer in the midst of war, and presents a sensitive and thoughtful reflection of the chaos and occasional comedy of wartime.
First published in 1992, Douglas & McIntyre is pleased to add My Father’s Son to the Farley Mowat Library series, which includes the other recently re-released titles Sea of Slaughter, People of the Deer, A Whale for the Killing, And No Birds Sang, Born Naked and The Snow Walker.
farley Mowat (1921–2014) was born in Belleville, Ontario. He spent much of his youth in Saskatoon, and lived in Ontario, Cape Breton and Newfoundland, while travelling frequently to Canada’s far north. Throughout, Mowat remained a determined environmentalist, despairing at the ceaseless work of human cruelty. Yet his ability to capture the tragic comedy of human life on earth has made him a national treasure in Canada, and a beloved storyteller to readers around the world. Over his internationally celebrated career, he wrote 44 books including The Dog Who Wouldn’t Be, and The Boat Who Wouldn’t Float.

Through Blood and SweatA Remembrance Trek into Sicily’s World War II Battlegrounds
mark Zuehlke
“Then I think of battlefields where a monument marks the spot, describes the scene, or simply serves as a marker for remembrance. We should not need these focal points to picture a past battlefield and the horrors endured there. But their presence definitely helps to focus the mind, reinforce the solemnity of emotion that is so inherent in the act of remembrance.”
—Mark Zuehlke
through Blood And SweAt takes readers on a memorable, thought-provoking 300-kilometre march in the footsteps taken by the soldiers of 1st Canadian Infantry Division in 1943. As part of Operation Husky 2013, a group of Canadians walked this route to honour the memory of the nation’s soldiers who fought in Sicily seventy years earlier and whose sacrifice has been largely forgotten. Under a searing sun, with Mount Etna’s soaring heights always in the distance, a small contingent of marchers trekked each day along winding country roads for between 15 and 35 kilometres to reach the outskirts of a small town or village. Here they were joined by a pipe band, which led them to the skirl of bagpipes in a parade into the community’s heart to be met by hundreds of cheering and applauding Sicilians. Before each community’s war memorial a service of remembrance for both the Canadian and Sicilian war dead followed. Each day also brought the marchers closer to their final destination—Agira Canadian War Cemetery where 490 of the 562 Canadian soldiers who fell during the course of Operation Husky in 1943 are buried. On July 30—after twenty gruelling days—the marchers were joined here by almost a thousand Canadians and Italians. All joined to conduct a profoundly emotional ceremony of remembrance that ended with one person standing before each headstone and answering the roll call on that soldier’s behalf. Mark Zuehlke, author of the award-winning Canadian Battle Series, was one of the Operation Husky 2013 marchers. He uses this arduous and poignant task as a focal point for a contemplative look at the culture of remembrance and the experience of war.
Mark Zuehlke is the winner of the 2014 Pierre Berton Award: the Governor General’s History Award for Popular Media. In 2006, his Canadian Battle Series book Holding Juno won the City of Victoria Butler Book Prize. He has also written six historical works outside of the series, including For Honour’s Sake (Knopf Canada), which won the 2007 Canadian Author’s Association Lela Common Award for Canadian History. He lives in Victoria, bc.

Forgotten VictoryFirst Canadian Army and the Cruel Winter of 1944–45
mark Zuehlke
during the winter oF 1944–45, the western allies desperately sought a strategy that would lead to Germany’s quick defeat. Hundreds of thousands of soldiers in trenches and dugouts suffered through the bitterest European winter in fifty years.
The Allied high command decided that First Canadian Army would launch the pivotal offensive to win the war—an attack against the Rhineland, an area of Germany on the west bank of the Rhine. Winning this land would give them a launching point for crossing the river and driving into Germany’s heartland.
But before the Allies could strike, Hitler launched a massive offensive towards Antwerp, the Battle of the Bulge. By the time the Germans were driven back to their start lines, the first thaws had begun. Previously frozen ground, ideal for mobile warfare, had turned to quagmire. Anticipating the Allied attack, the Germans broke dams and dykes to inundate great swaths of the Rhine’s floodplain.
On February 8, 1945, First Canadian Army launched Operation Veritable. Advancing on the heels of the greatest artillery bombardment yet fired by the western Allies, thousands of Canadian and British troops advanced into an inferno of battle under orders to surrender not an inch of German soil. Infantrymen were forced to fight relentlessly, with little support and often in close quarters, for thirty-eight gruelling and costly days.

Arthur EricksonAn Architect’s Life
DaviD stouCk
Winner of the Roderick Haig-Brown Regional Prize (2014) Winner of the Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize (2014) Winner of the Basil Stuart-Stubbs Prize (2014) Shortlisted for the RBC Taylor Prize (2014)
An intimate portrait of the brilliant and controversial architect who put Canada on the world stage.
arthur erickson, canada’s pre-eminent philosopher-architect, was renowned for his innovative approach to landscape, his genius for spatial composition and his epic vision of architecture for people.
Erickson worked chiefly in concrete, which he called “the marble of our times,” and wherever they appear, his buildings move the spirit with their poetic freshness and their mission to inspire. Travel was key to Erickson’s creative process: floating high above the clouds on extended flights, he made the preliminary drawings for the spectacular, large-scale works that would be built in various parts of Canada—Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall, Vancouver’s Simon Fraser University—and around the world.
But he was also a controversial figure, more than once attracting the ire of his fellow architects, and leading a complicated personal life that resulted in a series of bankruptcies. In a fall from grace that recalls a Greek tragedy, Canada’s great architect—a handsome, elegant man who lived like a millionaire and counted among his close friends Pierre Trudeau and Elizabeth Taylor—eventually became penniless.
This first full biography of Erickson, who died in 2009 at the age of 84, traces his life from its modest origins to his emergence on the world stage. Grounded in interviews with Erickson and his family, friends and clients, Arthur Erickson is both an intimate portrait of the man and a stirring account of how he made his buildings work. Brilliantly written and superbly researched, it is also a provocative look at the phenomenon of cultural heroes and the nature of what we call “genius.”
DavID stouCk is a biographer whose works include Ethel Wilson: A Critical Biography, shortlisted for the VanCity Book Prize, and Collecting Stamps Would Have Been More Fun: The Correspondence of Sinclair Ross 1933-86, a finalist for the Alberta Book Prize. With Myler Wilkinson, he edited Genius of Place: Writing about British Columbia. He is professor emeritus of English at Simon Fraser University.

Chicken in the Mango TreeFood and Life in a Thai-Khmer Village
Jeffrey alforD
in the small village of Kravan in rural Thailand, the cuisine is completely distinct from the dishes typically associated with Thailand. The diet is finely attuned to the land, taking advantage of what is local and plentiful.
Bestselling food writer Jeffrey Alford has been completely immersed in this unique culinary tradition for the last four years while living in Kravan with his partner Pea, a talented forager, gardener and cook. Alford provides insight into the ecological and cultural traditions out of which the cuisine of the region has developed, and describes how the food is meant to be eaten: as an elaborate dish in a wedding ceremony, a well-deserved break from the rice harvest, or just a comforting snack at the end of a hard day.
Chicken in the Mango Tree follows the cycle of a year in Kravan, and the recipes associated with each season. With helpful substitutes for the more exotic ingredients and cooking methods, Alford’s recipes and stories blend together to bring a taste of this little-known region to North American homes.

Ted Harrison CollectedintroDuCtion By roBert BuDD
canadian artist ted Harrison began to paint as a young boy in school, and in the years that followed, worked and taught as an artist, illustrator and author. The artist’s move to the Yukon in the 1960s opened up his style to the breathtaking artistic interpretations of sea, land and sky that are so strongly associated with his work. This collection showcases the multitudes of subjects and settings that he depicts in his signature style of sweeping lines and broad swatches of solid pigment.
Pairing bold, whimsical colours with sophisticated depictions of the life and culture of the people who live in the wintery North, Ted Harrison’s paintings have a time-tested value and charm that appeals to all ages.
This volume is a compendium of some of Harrison’s best and most memorable paintings. With an introductory essay by author Robert Budd, this collection is a tribute to one of Canada’s most-loved artists.

All-Day BreakfastaDam lewis sChroeDer
when widowed Father and substitute teacher Peter Giller leads an eleventh-grade class on a field trip to a plastics factory, a leaking pipe sprays him and the students with a mysterious pink goo. At first, the side effects are mild: short-temperedness, sawdust-scented B.O. and an unquenchable craving for bacon. Then things get spooky: Peter’s fingers start falling off, his students forget how to read, and empathy for human suffering plummets, especially if anyone gets between them and their bacon.
Peter can’t figure out what’s happening—surely he’s not a zombie? At no time in any movie does a zombie count on his reattached fingers the ways in which he is not a zombie, and anyway, Peter craves bacon, not brains. But normal people don’t put their bodies back together with staple guns or contemplate biting off ears. Peter’s definitely not fit to be around his children, and his mother-in-law “temporarily” adopts them. Peter’s children are all he has left, and he’ll do anything to be with them again. He races across the country in a stolen ambulance to face down pinstriped bureaucrats, affectionate farm girls and monsters plucked from mythology in his search for the cure to his horrifying condition.

Me ArtsyDrew hayDen taylor, eDitor
while First nations cultural practice still honours traditional forms, contemporary indigenous artists have diversified into many areas. The fourteen contributors in Me Artsy pursue such varied disciplines as filmmaking, gourmet cuisine, blues piano, fashion design, acting, writing and painting as well as traditional drumming and storytelling. Their concerns include the eternal ones that occupy artists everywhere—what makes Me Artsy special is that all these concerns are always overlaid with an awareness of First Nations identity. The essays explore many common themes around the role of art in First Nations communities, including the importance of art for creating social change, the role of art in representing Native culture and the fusion of traditional and contemporary techniques. On a more personal level, the essays describe the significance of art in the lives of the contributors, along with their sometimes unlikely journeys to success. Contributors include Zacharias Kunuk, Monique Mojica, Marianne Nicolson, Kim Picard, Maxine Noel, Murray Porter, Karyn Recollet, Santee Smith, Rose Stella, Drew Hayden Taylor, Steve Teekens, Richard Van Camp, David Wolfman and Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas.

Closing TimeProhibition, Rum-Runners, and Border Wars
Daniel franCisin march 1918, Canada’s federal government banned the manufacture and importation of liquor, making it illegal to have a drink anywhere in the country. For the next twenty-one months, Canada was as dry as any law could make it, which admittedly was not very dry.
Closing Time tells the story of this fascinating attempt by both provincial and federal governments to control the social habits of Canadians. It began as a popular crusade that was supposed to cleanse society of a widespread evil, but instead became an opportunity for larceny, profit and violence on a grand scale.

One Story, One SongriCharD waGamese
in one Story, One Song, Richard Wagamese invites readers to accompany him on his travels. His focus is on stories: how they shape us, how they empower us, how they change our lives. Ancient and contemporary, cultural and spiritual, funny and sad, the tales are grouped according to the four Ojibway storytelling principles: balance, harmony, knowledge and intuition.
Whether the topic is learning from his grade five teacher about Martin Luther King, gleaning understanding from a wolf track, lighting a fire for the first time without matches or finding the universe in an eagle feather, these stories exhibit the warmth, wisdom and generosity that make Wagamese so popular. As always, in these pages, the land serves as Wagamese’s guide. And as always, he finds that true home means not only community but conversation—good, straight-hearted talk about important things. We all need to tell our stories, he says. Every voice matters.

The Elusive Mr. PondThe Soldier, Fur Trader and Explorer Who Opened the Northwest
Dr. Barry GouGhsoldier, Fur trader and explorer Peter Pond, the subject of this long-overdue book, is a man whose legend has been forgotten in favour of those who came after him. Historian Barry Gough reconstructs his remarkable life in The Elusive Mr. Pond.
After a stint as a soldier, Pond paddled into the wild territory of western Canada with only a canoe, some trade goods, and a few French Canadians to aid him. What he returned with is the stuff of legend: eighty thousand furs and directions to a portage and river system that would carry traders farther west than they had ever been.

Darrell Dennisdarrell dennis is a stereotype-busting, politically incorrect Native American/Aboriginal/Shuswap. (Only he’s allowed to call himself an “Indian.” Maybe. Under some circumstances.) With a large dose of humour and irreverence, he untangles some of the truths and myths about First Nations, explaining why Native people aren’t genetically any more predisposed to be become alcoholics than Caucasians; that Native religion doesn’t consist of worshipping rocks, disappearing into thin air, or conversing with animals; and that tax exemptions are so limited and confusing that many people don’t even bother.
