opportunity to sell it, we just passed the breaking point (when we passed the printing cost on the run), I hope to be able to continue doing books. I hope to be able to not depend on commission work as much and be able to work independently, if not to get rewarding commissions.

My name is Alberto, I am 35 years old and live in Italy I studied classic literature but I’ve always had an interest in art and graphic design at the moment I am a freelance,I work with some shops and restaurants in the town I live in,Bologna,mainly my job is to take care of the interior design of the stores since I like to paint I’m always checking around for new places in which I can show my art

I’ve always liked drawing and doodling on paper some years ago I then started to collect designer toys and got really involved in this new way of making art a more affordable and very fresh way so I basically started to try painting with acrylic colours and spray

paint,mainly on wood boards and paper I also get inspiration from street art in general I love artists such Keith haring and wharol also contemporary ones,mainly bansky,blu and mcbess

For the last year I’ve been working on a commission work its a very large graffiti style painting it will measure 4 meters x 5 meters all done with acrylics on 20 wood boards which will be put side to side and create the final image

I do really hope to keep on doing what I’m doing,so yeah basically I’d love to keep on making art someday I’d also like to see my designs on clothes or merchandising at the moment I’m also trying to create some toys

My name is Kirsten Renz and I’m from northeast Indiana. I literally live in front of a cornfield. I am a college student who sews and crochets for my shop called Local Color. I like making bags and cases for phones and mp3-players, but have tried my hand at plush animals, eye patches, pillows, mobiles, key chains, sleeping masks, pins and more stuff I didn’t feel like paying for.

Other than sewing and crocheting (and the occasional battle with knitting) my interests are watching movies, painting my fingernails, playing video games on my DS and eating Mexican food. The first time I typed this I accidentally wrote “eating Mexicans”. But that is not true. I do not eat Mexicans.

Mostly I really love to imagine things and execute making them. There’s nothing quite like seeing a finished product and comparing it to what you had imagined making. While I don’t make anything magnificent or intricate, I’m a huge fan of simplicity and function and I definitely have an outlet for that in Local Color.

The word “hobby” is often used to describe what I do, but for me it’s definitely a passion. Every time I sit down to crochet or pull out my sewing machine, I find a motivation that I don’t get with anything else (besides maybe eating).

I can’t wait to be able to devote myself full-time to what I do. I’ve already come a pretty long distance from my very humble beginnings. I remember the first thing I “sewed”. It was a doll for my mom and I literally stapled it closed. I first learned to crochet and sew (properly) in a sophomore year textiles class in high school. What continues to motivate me today are all the different groups of people in my life.

My parents and boyfriend pick me up when I’m in a rut and my amazing Etsy/blog following inspire me everyday to keep going. The whole-hearted feedback and support I get from all kinds of people has been one of my favorite parts about sharing what I make with the internet.

Currently I’m trying to master the art of bag making. It’s an area I’ve dabbled in with tote bags and duffle bags, but crooked stitches and fraying fabric really get to me, so in the past I’ve literally thrown what I’m working on at the wall. But lately I’ve broken it all down and tried to master the basics. While this sounds incredibly boring, being able to accurately do something that’s plagued you in the past is satisfying.

I love teaching myself new techniques because something about textiles that I love is that you can pull different techniques into everything you make. I’m looking at the bag I’ve been slowly stitching together and am excited to make more and expand my Etsy.

As a fashion school drop-out I sometimes kick myself over the professors and professional people I missed out on working with, but I have to say that the pride that comes with teaching yourself to do something and coming up with patterns completely on your own is absolutely amazing. I’m very critical of myself, so when I feel pride, that’s something for the books.

As far as the future goes I’ve got a pretty clear image of what I want. I’m going to school for business and want to open a shop in whatever city I’m living in.

I can’t think of something I’d rather do than own a shop and live above it. I’ve never been a big fan of people telling me what to do, so my college major was chosen from stubbornness, but has developed to something slightly more meaningful. Of course to a lot of people this is a pipedream, but I feel like I have a solid foundation and am determined to be able to wear what I want everyday.

I attended private school when I was little. I wore plaid skirts. This impregnates a hatred for uniformity in a young girl. In the long run if I’m 30 and still crocheting I will be a happy person.

I love having so many people to motivate me and an outlet that has proven so fruitful in so many ways. I also love being able to sit on my butt and watch Mary Kate and Ashley moves while I work. But that is neither here nor there.

STEPHANIE JESSICA LAU

I’m a speech-language pathologist from Canada who works

with preschool and kindergarten-aged children. I graduated

with a bachelor of arts in psychology and a master’s of

science in speech-language pathology. I absolutely love my job

and feel so blessed that I found a career that I’m passionate

about. I love working with children and knowing that I’m

making a significant impact in their lives as I help improve

their communication abilities.

I’m also a newlywed as I got married this past September to

my long-time sweetheart of seven years, Ryan! I’ve always

loved crafting, reading, baking, travelling, ballroom dancing

and musical theatre. Another interest that I’m particularly

passionate about is crocheting, or specifically “amigurumi”,

the Japanese art of knitted/crocheted stuffed animals.

I started my blog “all about ami” in January 2011 to show

pictures of my work and document my projects. I love

designing new amigurumi and providing free patterns on my

blog. The response and support I’ve received has been amazing

both from people who have never crocheted before as well as

long-time crocheters. I love connecting with other crafters and

amigurumi lovers around the world.

’I’ve been crafting ever since I was young, as I started knitting and crocheting when I was ten years old. However, as I became more and more involved in school, my crafting took a backseat. It wasn’t until this past October when I started crocheting again. As I browsed on-line to see what people were crocheting nowadays, I found images and images of cute crocheted stuffed animals!

I became fascinated by amigurumi and I could not wait to get started. I looked on-line for free patterns and bought a couple of amigurumi books. Once I started, I could not stop making them since they were just so kawaii and relatively quick to make. They made adorable gifts, and my friends and family greatly supported me in my new hobby.

Ryan, my husband has greatly aided me as he has a keen eye for detail and style. He does a great job sewing on the noses and doing other detailed work on my amigurumi! We get inspiration from things we see everyday. Whenever we see something cute, it’s pretty common for us to say, “oooh, we should try crocheting that!” It’s fun drawing inspiration from unlikely sources too…like a dim sum trip!

One of my projects that I’m particularly proud of is my “Chinese New Year Doll”. I had just started my blog in January and had previously been following other people’s patterns. I had not done any of my own original work.

As Chinese New Year was approaching in early February, I began thinking how cute it would be to make a little doll to help celebrate the event. She could have a high bun and chopsticks in her hair! And wouldn’t it also be adorable if she was holding a little bunny since it was the Year of the Rabbit?

As all these ideas came swirling in my mind, Ryan helped me do a sketch of what she would look like. I figured out what shapes I needed to crochet and meticulously wrote down the pattern so that other people could make her in the future. Ryan and I worked very hard on her, and we were so happy with how she turned out.

She got featured on some of my favourite blogs, including CRAFT and Angry Asian Man. I still think she’s one of my most original pieces and the pattern for her is still my most viewed blog post to date.

I feel very strongly about using my God-given skills and passions to help and love those in my life and around the world. Currently, I support the “Girls at Risk” program in Niger with any proceeds that come from my blog. The Girls At Risk program is a two year apprenticeship that teaches girls ages 12-19 various life skills to reduce their risk of early marriage, childbirth complications and poverty.

I provide my patterns for free but encourage people to make a charitable contribution to this program if they’d like. I would love to help on a deeper level though, perhaps teaching people in third world countries how to crochet and allowing them to sell the products, helping them rise above poverty (like Krochet Kids).

I see myself continuing to get inspired by everything around me and designing new amigurumi as my skills and technique develop and improve. I hope to continue inspiring others to be creative and adventurous and try crocheting even if they’ve never picked up a crochet needle before, or to take up crocheting again if they’ve abandoned it. Take up those interests from your childhood or pursue those hobbies that fell to the wayside as priorities changed. Use them to inspire and love others- who knows where it’ll lead!

Hannah Jackson

My name is Hannah Jackson and I am a Graphic Designer specialising in Packaging design. I studied BA (Hons) Graphic Design at Leeds College of Art and finished my degree in June 2011, and will graduate in the coming November. I specialise in packaging and branding design and have a keen interest in sustainable packaging, which is a strong feature in the majority of my work.

I specialise in sustainable packaging design (particularly within the food and cosmetics sectors) and this is the driving force behind my design practice. I do not believe that there should be a separate category for sustainable design because I feel that designing something to have as little negative impact on the environment should come as naturally in the design process as considering typefaces and colours. I am a firm believer in the fact that sustainable design can be beautiful, and does not have to conform to the stereotypical ‘green’ design that we see so much of today. I am greatly influenced in my work by agencies such as Pearlfisher, Turner Duckworth, Hatch & thomas.matthews, as well as design blogs such as The Dieline and Lovely Package.

I have very recently finished my degree at Leeds College of Art and feel that I produced my best work yet during my Final Major project. In particular, there are two projects that I would like to mention. Georgia May Patissier Chocolatier. This is a brief that I took on wanting to address the challenge of creating high end, luxury branding and packaging that is also sustainable.

During this brief I explored folding and tabs as a method of glueless and sustainable construction. I created a wide range of products that would usually be secured by adhesive that I found alternate ways of securing. I am very pleased with how this brief turned out and I feel that I met the challenge of creating beautiful sustainable packaging successfully.

Your Shop. This brief was completed through collaboration with Will Asken, who I have worked with on a few briefs before. Together, we designed and created a branded identity for a supermarket and three product ranges within that brief, including a value, regular and ‘prime’ range of products. We stuck with the application of glueless construction and implemented a rewards system in which people could return empty packaging to be recycled/reused by the store in order to receive coupons for more products. In doing this, we have proposed a way to greatly decrease the carbon footprint left by supermarkets.

I am currently working freelance though would ultimately like a position within a packaging design agency. I plan to be working in New York within the next ten years, though for now am perfectly happy to stay in England.

My immediate plan of action right now is to work on putting together our end of year show, go down to London to be a part of the D&AD New Blood show (and hopefully win it so that my course can have its third running title), and then to go down to Marlow and intern at Holmes & Marchant for a month. After that, I am going to look for a more permanent position in an agency and build my way up.

Graphic Design is definitely not a hobby for me, though it is something that I greatly enjoy, it is something that I want to spend my life working on and build a successful career in the industry. Another of my goals is to be featured in the next publication that The Dieline releases.

I’m a U.S. based designer working out of San Francisco. I grew up throughout South East Asia and California, and I studied at the University of California at Davis.

Most of my work has been digital, though when I started I dabbled in graffiti art. I spent a couple of years in an Art program doing paintings and some installations. From there I worked freelance, making postcards, posters, logos and t-shirt designs for various organizations, including a couple of charities.

After doing that for a while I got a job as a graphic artist at a local newspaper, which I worked at for three years while continuing to do freelance work on the side. Eventually I became head of the graphics department there, before leaving roughly a year ago.

These days I’m mostly just doing posters and designs for my own amusement along with a handful of commissions here and there, designing in my free time.

Design, and art in general, is definitely a passion

of mine. I think I had always been interested in

illustrating and art, but I really didn’t get involved

until high school.

I think I spent most of my free time back then in

the art studio messing around with oils and spray

cans. In those days I was really inspired by graffiti

artists like D*Face, 123Klan, and Flying Fortress

among others. But eventually I realized that I was

more interested in the design elements rather

than the actual tagging aspect of graffiti.

The summer before I left for University I injured

myself and I couldn’t move around a whole lot.

So instead of living on the couch and playing video

games all summer, which was a very real and

very tantalizing possibility, I decided to teach

myself the Adobe creative suite, and I’ve been doing

design work every since. It also helped that there

are so many great artists out there to learn from

these days.

I literally spend hours a day browsing blogs and

galleries, and I think everything I see influences me

in some way, which makes the internet my biggest

influence I guess.

I’m currently involved in a developing web series, though I can’t really talk about it quite yet. But on my tumblr I’m about to revive an old project of mine called Logo Lovers.

Essentially it’s a kind of contest as well as an excuse for me to get some design practice. First I’ll ask my followers and anyone paying attention to send me a brief message telling me why they need a logo, making a case for themselves.

Once I get enough responses in, I’ll sift through them, pick a handful, and then make them each a set of custom logotypes. A couple of people get free logos and I get some more design practice as well as something to throw into my portfolio: win-win!

So anyone who’s interested just needs to keep an eye on my tumblr for a bit until I open things up for the project. I’ve got a few others things on the way as well, including some other poster designs, and a concept for a children’s book that I’ve been developing for what seems like forever, so it’ll be nice to see how those projects turn out.

These days I have to admit it is a little difficult to see

where I’m going to be down the line. Regardless of

whether or not I end up doing it for a living or not,

I’d very much like to continue designing.

Maybe running a freelance studio on the side of

whatever my day job ends up being. Not really as a

way to make money, but rather a simple excuse to

keep working in design.

But part-time or not I definitely want to continue

being a designer. In the same way it’s difficult to see

how I’ll develop.

I’m influenced by new artwork and designers

everyday and each plays a role in the trajectory of

my work, but whatever that trajectory ends up being

I just want to keep getting better at what I do.

So I guess there’s no real plan or even a concrete

goal, I just want to keep moving forward.

My name is ena bacanovic, but everyone knows me by my nickname ruby. I’m almost 20 years old, from vinkovci/croatia but now living in zagreb/croatia due to information design college. Mostly i’ve been designing for several youth organizations and clubs around my city and slovenia or for my friends.

My first touch with graphic design was back in the days of elementary school, in art class, and since then I’ve been designing all sorts of stuff. The influences in my work are pretty random. Sometimes it can be some nice photo that I find on the internet or just the situation/feeling that I had that day. It’s different for every project.

I’m really proud on everything that I’ve created so far. Right now I’m really proud that I get to exhibit my work on Design Day here in Zagreb, my poster for Japan was also exhibited in Belgrade/Serbia and in the past few months my work was featured all over the internet which is pretty great for me.

Well first I would like to finish my college and get the good job after that. My plan is to open my own design studio someday, somewhere in Europe. But I have enough time until that happens, now I’m happy with any new project that I get to work on.

We are two brothers from Birmingham who work together out of a spare room in our parent’s house which they are about to sell. We try to make things that have a little bit of something about them.

We both went to university in Bristol at UWE but we have come out the other end of that now.

At the moment we could either be building an empire or digging a hole it is too early to tell. We do illustration, animation and graphic design.

All our work is influenced by people. Wherever you go in life, whatever you plan to do you are going to have to deal with people and that’s just great as long as you don’t already know them.

Our studio name was amongst other things inspired by a sketch from The Armando Iannucci Show, where it is said that most people don’t find out they have made a wrong decision in life until 4am in the morning eight years too late down the line, or something to that effect.

We are just gathering together a load of work under the theme eight years too late.

We have been chosen to exhibit at New Designers One Year On which is exciting. It starts on July 6th and runs to the 9th at the Business Design Centre in Islington.

We are stopping down in London for the week at a mans flat that Stuart met on the internet so come down and see us if you want to.

Hopefully we will sell a few books, prints and animations so we will be able to stop selling off our personal possessions on eBay.

Beyond that ideally we will have our own studio in the middle of a field with some goalposts outside so we can have a kick about.

Having a van would also be good as well as supporting ourselves and a family. Maybe a four door saloon, even if it is just to share.

INFLOW DESIGN

I hate writing about myself more than I hate people who don’t say thank you when you open the door for them, but I was told I need to write a minimum of 150 words for this so. For anyone that cares;

I’m 20 year’s old, I live in a city called Norwich, currently studying graphic design at the Norwich art school, I mainly listen to D&B/ dubstep/ metalcore and like my steak medium rare.

I use POSCA markers for pretty much every drawing I do, work ridiculously well on pretty much any surface and have such solid colours. Apart from that, for backgrounds I usually use any spray paint I can get my hands on and acrylic paint.

Prefer drawing on wood mainly because you can get hold of huge bits for free and it’s usually a lot smoother to draw on that canvas so if you’re an obsessive nerd like me when it comes to line work this is always good.
