Welcome to Dorking FC at Westhumble - our home venue for what promises to be quite

a season in the history of Dorking FC, both on and off the field.

I would like to extend a warm welcome to our visitors today - all the players, management, staff and supporters of Sheerwater.

It’s exciting to watch the work get underway building our new home ground at Meadowbank. It’s only in the early stages but, after nearly three years of doubt and debate, we can finally see all the plans and hopes becoming a reality. As you can read elsewhere in today’s match programme, our thriving Under 18s and Ladies teams also have their seasons up and running and it’s good to know that, this time next year, all our teams will be sited together, playing on the 3G artificial pitch in the new Meadowbank stadium - Dorking FC’s ancestral home.

With Surrey FA relocating their headquarters to the ground, Dorking Wanderers’ first team playing home matches there and local youth clubs training weekly, our new clubhouse will be at a thriving hub of Surrey football – a lasting legacy for sport that will regenerate that area and bring people into the town centre. We’ve come a long way from the days when Meadowbank was expected to become another supermarket and be lost to sport forever!

While we wait for the construction, thanks must go to Marc White, Jeremy Pain, Chris Moon and all the Dorking Wanderers staff for making the fantastic and picturesque ground they’ve built here at Westhumble available to us. Both clubs are working together with enthusiasm to promote grassroots football in the local area through the new Dorking Football Development Alliance.

DORKING FC - BACK IN TOWN

a welcome from the chairman

ALAN GOUT

04

On the field, we’ve had mixed fortunes, but we’re rebuilding Dorking FC from bottom to top with an emphasis on bringing on young local players who can be with us for many years to come proudly representing their hometown club - so its no surprise that there’s ups and downs week-to-week. The important point is that we can see all our plans progressing in the right direction over a period of time.

From that point of view, more than half the squad is from Dorking and the immediately surrounding villages, we see individual players improving week on week, including a number of graduates from the Under 18s, under a manager in Danny Fox who’s totally committed to developing local players, has a track record working with young talent, and is building a squad that blends youth and experience,

That’s reflected in the renewed enthusiasm we’re seeing for the club from people in the community. Our attendances so far this year are running at roughly double the average for clubs in our league. Thank you very much for your support – it means a lot and is really important as we all work to revitalise this great old club for the benefit of the whole town.

A couple of recent disappointments have come in cup games. As we saw last year, a good cup run can be fun and provide a bit of a lift to a club – but how we do in the league will be a much better measure of Dorking FCs progress over the course of the whole year. So, in the league, we’ve certainly

seen steady progress, picking up back-to-back wins for the first time this season. Obviously, we hope to extend that run today but, whatever the result of this one game this afternoon, I’m absolutely confident we’re continuing to move in the right direction with the squad and there’s undoubtedly much more to come from both the management team and this group of players.

Last, but by no means least, I would like to thank our Dorking FC Matchmakers – the team of volunteers from the community who have helped make sure that everything runs smoothly at our home games here at Westhumble, giving spectators a warm welcome to both first team and Under 18 matches. The Matchmakers are everything this club is about. If you’d like to be a part of it, then please just talk to the volunteers behind the bar, or email [email protected].

I hope you enjoy the game and your visit to Dorking FC today – and look forward to welcoming you back here again soon.

Kind Regards

Alan GoutChairman, Dorking FC

Good afternoon and welcome to Westhumble for today’s match against Sheerwater. I

would like to extend a warm welcome to Pete Ruggles, his players and the officials of the club.

Our visitors are having a strong start to the season and it just goes to show that money doesn’t necessarily dictate success in this division. I know quite a few of the Sheerwater players from my time at the club and have no doubt their success will be based on having the club at their heart. Then, with a few wins along the way, they have put themselves in a good position.

Our recent league form hasn’t been too bad either, with wins against Frimley Green and Epsom Athletic setting us up for a possible third-in-a-row today. And with our opponents having lost their last two games, I’m sure the match will be one that both teams are very keen to win.

A break from league action last week saw mixed performances in cup games against Balham and Worcester Park.

We paid the price for poor defending in the midweek game against Balham, and the lads all know the performance wasn’t acceptable. But it was lpeasing to see the reaction against Worcester Park on Saturday. I felt we were unlucky not to have taken that game to extra time at least, with Ryan Lunn missing out by millimetres after Jimmy Brazil had looped the ball over the home keeper early in the first half.

07

WHAT DOES THE FOX SAY?

FIRST TEAM MANAGER

The game was a good opportunity to look at new players, with youth team starlet Haris Bouzida making a welcome debut alongside Joel Saunderson, who will be well known to our visitors today, having captained Sheerwater for the best part of two seasons. Joel became joined our squad officially last week after training hard since pre-season, returning to the game following his second anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

With new players becoming available, it often means an exit for some others and we made the decision to release Rishy Vasishta last week. With a wealth of talent in the midfield, we felt opportunities would be few and far between for Rishy, but we thank him for his work with the club since the summer and wish him all the best for the season ahead.

I hope you enjoy the game.

Up the Chicks.

DFC PLAYER PROFILE

JIMMYBRAZIL

By modern day standards, Jimmy Brazil is something of a Dorking veteran. He was

invited to “come down and have a couple of games” by former manager Glynn Stephens, who he knew from Ashford – and, five years later, he’s still here.

Indeed, it’s a little known fact that Jimmy turned down an invitation to play at a higher level this season, opting to stay with new boss Danny Fox and the Chicks, one of just a handful of survivors from the previous managerial era.

“Dorking is my home town these days, so this is my local club,” Jimmy says. “I’m not prepared to leave until I’ve helped it go a bit further back to where it belongs.”

Jimmy’s devotion to the club is matched by his tenacious, determined and lion hearted attitude on the pitch - yet, off the field, you couldn’t hope to meet a more placid and charmingly unassuming player. This combination of loyalty and easy going attitude may help explain why he so willingly plays

wherever the manager needs him - scoring a hat-trick one week and breaking up attacks at right back the next. In just xxx games this season, the ever-versatile Jimmy has already featured in defence, central midfield and as number 9.

Despite playing for Chelsea’s academy for several years up to the age of 15, Jimmy insists he’s very happy playing for Dorking. But ask him if there’s anything that he doesn’t like about non-league football and he doesn’t hesitate. “When Andy Miller doesn’t pass and I’m through on goal,” he says. A broad grin then takes over, as he adds, “Someone have a word!”

Having seen Dorking FC through some of its darkest times, and now on the cusp of a return to Meadowbank, Jimmy is confident the team will only get stronger as the newer players and youth team graduates settle in.

So what are his personal aims for the season?

“Win the league,” he says. “Then I can quit happy!”

A much changed Dorking team paid the price with a heavy cup exit as Balham took full advantage of an

uncommitted and sloppy performance.

With a number of players unavailable, or being rested ahead of the FA Youth Cup clash on Thursday, Manager Danny Fox used the divisional cup competition as a chance to rotate the squad and offer opportunities to players who have been on the periphery of the squad in recent weeks. But the boss was left with plenty to ponder as Balham were given time and space to play their slick passing game almost at will.

The rout started as early as the seventh minute when Balham got behind the Chicks’ defence far too easily, and pulled the ball back from the by-line to an unmarked Morgan Roberts-Watson, arriving in the box to slot the ball into the net from a central position.

Dorking responded well to going behind, with George Knight feeding Jimmy Brazil but the forward’s fierce strike was rising from his boot and went over the bar.

Still the Chicks were looking error prone at the back and in central midfield, giving away possession far too cheaply and inviting Balham pressure. Almost inevitably, the visitors scored a second on 28 minutes as Roberts-Watson picked up the ball on the left, cut inside and curled a terrific shot into the bottom far corner.

From the restart, a careless pass backwards was seized upon by Jerome Boncoeur who had a simple task of slipping it past Jake Nimmo into the Dorking net for a 3-0 lead. Only a goal line clearance by Brandon Watts prevented a fourth shortly after.

As if anyone could be in doubt on how Danny Fox felt about the quality of the Dorking performance, he responded with a double first half substitution. With Andy Miller and Jordon Boukhari now in central midfield, the Chicks began to look a little more competitive and were left ruing their luck when George Knight unleashed a screamer that rattled the inside of the upright, only to fly across the face of the Balham goal and away to safety.

Dorking emerged for the second half showing more purpose and secured a lifeline just two minutes after the break, as

Jordon Boukhari rose in the box to head the ball in off the post. And when, after a good spell of pressure, Jimmy Brazil brought a collective gasp from the crowd with a shot on the turn that went fractionally over the bar, a comeback began to look possible.

However, in truth, the cracks in the Dorking performance were still there and, as the Chicks continued to fail to track their opponents, Jason Boncoeur raced clear and rounded the keeper to score the fourth and kill off any hopes of a Dorking revival.

With the short-lived resistance now snuffed out, Balham resumed control throughout the pitch and it was little surprise when further goals followed. A 20-yard scorcher by Arsen Ujkaj flew into the far corner or the net, and Raoul Camara completed scoring with a clinical finish shortly before the full time whistle.

After two league wins, and despite the number of changes to the Dorking line up, it was the nature of the defeat that the management team found most troubling, with Danny Fox vowing to act to avoid a repetition when league action resumes.

An exciting and evenly matched tie saw Dorking just edged out of the Combined Counties League cup,

despite taking the lead early in the second half.

After a disappointing midweek performance against Balham, manager Danny Fox rang the changes, recalling Under 18 players Jack Wisbey and Ryan Lunn to the starting line up after their involvement in the FA Youth Cup and handing a first start to Joel Saunderson, who signed for the Chicks in the summer while recovering from a long-term knee injury.

It was Worcester Park, perhaps smarting from a league defeat at Dorking earlier in the season, who dominated the early stages. The Chicks had Jake Nimmo to thank for keeping the score goalless as early as the third minute, as the 17 year old keeper acrobatically tipped a goal-bound strike over the bar.

Further athletic stops by Nimmo kept the hosts at bay over the next fifteen minutes, with Dorking’s best chance coming from an improvised Jimmy Brazil cross which found Ryan Lunn a yard from goal but, with the youngster surrounded, the ball was stuck under his feet and he couldn’t quite dig it out before it was cleared.

After some sustained Worcester Park pressure, the game swung in Dorking’s direction. Midfielder Andy Miller twisted and turned into the box, unleashing a shot heading for the net that took the slightest deflection, diverting it onto the upright and behind.

It set off a series of corners, and follow up deliveries into the box, but with the ball repeatedly flying across the Worcester Park goal mouth, Dorking just failed to find the final touch.

Starting the second half as strongly as they finished the first, the opening goal duly arrived on 53 minutes as Andy Miller saw another shot saved, but this time the ever-determined Jimmy Brazil was on hand to fire home the rebound.

The goal reinvigorated Worcester Park and the lead lasted just eight minutes as the home team’s striker Mark Waters rose unmarked to attack the ball from a corner, powering it into the Dorking net for the equaliser.

In true cup tie fashion, the balance of power swung again as Worcester Park began to take control and they made their pressure count just a few minutes later. Jake Nimmo made

a strong stop down low but, with the ball failing to clear the danger area, Worcester Park’s Joe Cheeseman got to the rebound first and redirected it back into the net for a 2-1 lead.

With Dorking in search of the equaliser, Danny Fox handed a debut to another of the club’s promising local youth players, 16 year old forward Haris Bouzida. But as players tired on the sloping pitch, Dorking gradually ran out of ideas and creativity to get back into the game.

“We definitely ran out of a steam a little at the end,” the manager said, “but, even though we lost the game, I couldn’t fault the performance or effort from the team.” With the team very much a work-in-progress, as the club rebuilds locally ready for the return to Meadowbank next year, Danny Fox will have taken encouragement from the continued development of the youth team players as well as Joel Saunderson’s debut.

Despite clearly lacking match sharpness, Saunderson showed good touch on the ball, along with composure and awareness. The maturity gained through playing at a higher level suggests he will be a first rate acquisition for the Chicks as the season progresses.

BRIGHT START FOR NEW-LOOK YOUTH SQUAD

When the Chicks move back to Meadowbank next year, we’ll be

sharing the new stadium with all the local youth clubs, hosting over a thousand young players taking part in weekly training.

That doesn’t just create much needed facilities for the town, it represents a closer connection between Dorking’s 136 year old senior club and youth football as we build a pathway so that talented young players can move through to Dorking’s senior sides and keep playing a high standard of football in their home town.

Six games into the season and three youth team graduates have already become regulars in the first team squad. Others, such as 16 year old forward Haris Bouzida who appeared as a second half substitute in last week’s cup game at Worcester Park, are regularly training with the first teamers under the guidance of manager Danny Fox.

But the conveyor belt of talent hasn’t come about by good fortune. The progress made by the likes of Jack Wisbey, James Herouvin and Ryan Lunn is part of a concerted effort to build for the future with a core of young and local players who can develop their game while representing their town.

The Dorking Football Development Alliance, established for this season by the Chicks and Dorking Wanderers, has been key to this progress, along with the desire of the new first team management to work with and improve the local players at their disposal.

The Alliance has seen the merger of the two clubs’ Under 18 set ups into a single squad, run by Dorking FC.

The unified Dorking youth squad fields two teams - making use of Wanderers’ first team status to participate alongside the likes of Woking, Sutton, Leatherhead and the Met Police in the prestigious Ryman Youth League, as well as playing deeper into Surrey and Sussex in the Southern Youth League.

With players free to switch between the two teams as their development requires, it provides a step-by-step approach for players to move from Under 16 football at the likes of St Paul’s Panthers, Dorkinians, Wanderers and Brockham Badgers, up to men’s football when they reach 18.

The club has assembled a strong team of coaches with all the experience necessary to prepare the 38-strong squad for non-league football.

The Ryman team is guided by Dorking FC legend, Steve Lunn, the club’s all-time record appearance holder who played and scored in that famous 1992 FA Cup tie against Peter Shilton’s Plymouth,

James Herouvin

as well as going on to manage the Chicks before developing his youth coaching at Brockham. Steve is joined by Simon Coffey, a long-experienced local youth team manager as well as a nonsense defender in his day at local clubs such s Chessington and Hook.

Alongside Steve and Simon is the club’s Head of Youth Development, Nick Torpey who has also clocked up more than 300 appearances for the Chicks and is now a familiar figure on the grassroots youth scene in the town as a UEFA B qualified coach.

The early signs for the new set up have been good. In the FA Youth Cup, the Ryman team saw off Guildford City 3-2 in an extra time thriller here at Westhumble, going on to meet Met Police at Imber Court. Despite going down 1-0, the performance was an immense credit to the Dorking squad, who only lost to an 89th minute penalty - and against a team that knocked out Burnley’s elite academy in the third round proper last season.

In the Southern Youth League, Dorking U18s have notched up home wins against South Park (4-1) and Crowborough Athletic (5-2), as well as drawing with Merstham and suffering just one defeat, away at Lingfield.

And it’s not just about creating the players of the future. Dorking FC is determined to also develop the next generation of coaches. Nick Torpey is currently in the process of recruiting two up and coming young coaches to join the set-up and manage the Southern Youth League side under his expert guidance.

21

So, while all eyes today are on the first team, keep a look out for the Dorking youth set up, building a sustainable club where local talent and ambition can thrive in a club with top quality facilities and a succession plan on and off the field.

The future begins here.

Dorking FC Ladies travelled to Chertsey in the first round of the league cup nad came up just short in

a seven-goal thriller.

It was a closely fought opening to the game with both teams having chances to take the lead, but it took until the 25th minute for the opening goal to arrive. A shot from distance was parried well by Chicks’ keeper Molly Cowley, only for the rebound to fall to an unmarked Chertsey player to send back into the net for a 1-0 lead.

Dorking recovered well from the disappointment of going behind and began to dominate possession. Great combination play from the midfielders, along with good hold up play by Amy Fazackerley drew a foul and a free kick in the right hand channel. Amy Sheppard delivered a teasing ball to the near post, and it was diverted into the net by an unfortunate Chertsey defender to give the Chicks a deserved equalizer.

With the wind in their sails, Dorking continued to squeeze the play and press high up the field, but fell victim to two rather hopeful long balls, both of which were well finished to see the home side race into a 3-1 lead.

The Chicks responded with the best move of the game. Moving the ball down the left hand side, it was delivered into the box where Dani Sanchez produced a superb touch and turn only to see her shot rise over the bar from eight yards out.

Going into the second half, Dorking Ladies continued to believe in the passing football they had shown glimpses of before the break. A slight tactical change opened up the passing channels and the reward came when Shannon Butcher was brought down in the box by the Chertsey keeper. Amy Fazackerley finished coolly from

the resulting spot kick to bring the Chicks back into the game at 3-2.

But hopes of a comeback were short lived as Chertsey restored their two-goal advantage somewhat cruelly – a corner cleared out to the wing was crossed back into the area only for it to sail over everyone and into the far corner of the Dorking net.

Still the Chicks didn’t give up and, as Chertsey began to tire, Dorking piled on the pressure with set pieces and wave after wave of attack. A ball to the right was met by Stacey Newman, who finished neatly just inside the far post for 4-3.

Despite the best efforts of Dorking Ladies, the equaliser wouldn’t materialise. But there’s plenty to be proud of - a good, technical performance and a close game against a side that won 8-0 last time the clubs met shows just how far Matt Dilger’s team has progressed.

Dorking FC Ladies can now look forward to their opening league fixture and will be looking to hit the ground running as they visit Elstead on Sunday 2nd October.

“Dorking FC Ladies captain, Abi Patrick.”

THE HISTORY OFDORKING FC

Football has been played in Dorking since the 1830s. The first matches took place in the street.

An annual game was staged every Shrove Tuesday in the High Street, preceded by a procession led by a band as well as men dressed as women collecting donations and carrying a cross.

On the left of the cross was a red, white and blue football, on the top a gold ball and on the right a red and green football representing the ‘cockerel colours’ of Dorking FC - the same colours we wear proudly today. The Shrove Tuesday game tradition continued until 1905 when it became outlawed - although the club is now looking at ways to reintroduce the historic community event.

Dorking Football Club was founded in 1880, shortly after the FA had defined formal rules for the game, and now lays claim to the title of the oldest senior club in Surrey. The cockerel logo was also immediately adopted as the club’s badge. It still remains there today and is why we are affectionately known as ‘The Chicks’.

The club first played at a pitch on West Bank before moving to Fairfield Drive and then on to Pixham Lane in the 1920s. In 1953 we moved to our current home location at Meadowbank - an iconic, picturesque location just behind the High Street, where the bells of St Martin’s can be heard peeling during the games. The new stadium was the pride of the town with a capacity of 5000, including a

stand accommodating 700, opened by the then FA Secretary Sir Stanley Rous.

In 1974 we joined forces with Guildford City to become Guildford & Dorking United FC for an ill-fated three year period, before being reconstituted as Dorking Town FC, before reverting to the traditional named of Dorking FC in 1981.

On the pitch, our record over the years reflects the traditional highs and lows of non-league football, including many notable achievements as well as the occasional despair. In 1955 we became the first Surrey club to defeat a professional team when we beat Folkestone 3-1 in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup in front of a record crowd of over 4000 spectators.

The late 1980s and early 90s are considered to be our glory years with cup victories and a league title, along with a promotion in 1989 followed by another promotion in 1993 to the Premier Division of the Isthmian League. In 1992-3 we won the Southern Counties Combination Cup and reached the first round proper of the FA Cup, losing a thrilling game 3-2 at home to Peter Shilton’s Plymouth Argyle in front of TV cameras and a bumper crowd, many of whom still talk about it today while continuing to support the Chicks with a passion.

We continued to play at Meadowbank until 2013 when the ground was closed by the local authority

on health and safety grounds. A lack of investment and years of decay came home to roost and the club, now playing in the Combined Counties League Division One, was forced to leave the town and ground share in Horley.

The future was uncertain for the Chicks but, in early 2014, a new Board of local enthusiasts took over control and set out on an ambitious plan to rebuild the club as a community and social enterprise that would re-establish itself in the town, developing local talent.

An agreement was made with Mole Valley Council

for the ground at Meadowbank to be re-developed and Dorking FC have returned to playing in the town this year - initially at Westhumble Playing Fields before finally going home to the new Meadowbank for the 2017-2018 season.

Our new ground will feature the latest 3G artificial playing surface and, as well as having a new clubhouse, the site will also house the new headquarters of Surrey FA. Dorking FC will once again be very much at the centre of football activities in Surrey.

OPPOSITION HISTORY

SHEERWATER FC

The London County Council started to build Sheerwater Estate in 1948, for families that

wanted to move out of London and start a new life in Surrey. Around 1,380 houses were built at a cost of approximately £3 million. This prompted a community spirit from the early days, and football being the number one sport, came into effect when groups of men started having a kick around at the Sheerwater Recreation Ground, using their coats for goal posts.

Sheerwater Football Club was founded in 1958 by early members of the club, the late John French (also player), Stan West, Ken May, Bill Hilleard, Herbert Taylor (also player), Syd Morris, Derrick Thomas, Jim McDermott and players Dennis Hill, John Murray, Micky Wedge, Chris Robinson, Jose Garcia, Tony Minchinton, Don Stevens, Michael French, Jim Kelly, to name a few. Sheerwater joined the local Woking & District League.

We then progressed through the Divisions and obtained Intermediate status in the Surrey Intermediate (Western) League in the 1967-68 season. The club then progressed to senior level, and we were promoted to the Surrey Senior League for the 1972-73 season and a highest finish of 6th in the 1974-75 season. In 1978 following the loss of clubs to the London Spartan League, Hampshire clubs were admitted to the Surrey Senior League with the title of the competition eventually becoming the Combined Counties League.

In 1981-82 the League had reached 22 members, and as a consequence was split into East and West divisions. In a dreadful season with only one win and one draw the club finished bottom of the East division, 16 points behind Clarion and both Sheerwater and Clarion were relegated to the newly formed Surrey Premier league. In our first season in this new league we had a highest position of 5th in 1982-83. However in 1984-85 we finished only above the bottom side Heath End Wanderers and another relegation followed.

Unfortunately the vacancy at the lower level was a position in the Surrey Intermediate (Eastern) Division. Fortunately after one season in the Eastern Division we were allowed to transfer to the Surrey Combination Premier Division for the 1986-87 season, but we were relegated at the end of the season. After twice finishing

third, we were Champions of Division One in 1989-90 and promoted to the Premier Division for 1990-91, finishing in a mid-table position. However in June 1991 The Surrey Combination and Surrey South Eastern Intermediate Leagues merged, but we were able to move sideways to the Surrey Intermediate (Western) League. This was only for one season as we achieved promotion back to the Surrey Premier League. Our stay was, however, for only one season as we finished above bottom club Ashtead, only on goal difference, and were relegated once more. Yet again this was only for one season.

In 1994-95 we were back in the Surrey Premier League and finished 9th. After many discussions the Surrey Premier league became the first division of the Combined Counties league for the season 2003-04. We are still in the Division One League today, striving to maintain league standards with a small budget with few committee members and local helpers that maintain a good standard for the League. Although at present we are failing to meet the required Grade G with floodlights to stay in the League but we are part of the new Sheerwater Regeneration Programme that does not include a Recreation Ground or Athletic Club. We have now been issued with a document that confirms the new location for Sheerwater Football Club at the Bishop David Brown School on Sheerwater Estate.

We will be moving to a new facility that will be up to the grading to stay in the Combined Counties League. The planning consent has now been granted and the works are expected to start in w wAutumn 2017. The FA has stated that Floodlights are required by March 31st 2018.
