Doral Design District Merchants Association has been formed

The City initiated Doral Design District master plan has taken a significant step forward with the incorporation of the Doral

Design District Merchants Association. The newly formed Merchants Association will be made up exclusively of business and property owners who have a physical presence with the designed design district. The Merchants Association will be led by a seven Member Board of volunteers headed by Tony DeRosa and Steve Musolino as President and VP, respectively, along with Armando Alvarez as Treasurer and Ernesto Avino as Secretary to represent the Executive Board. Former Vice Mayor Robert Van Name, will serve as a Special Advisor.

The central purpose of the Merchants Association is to promote and enhance the profitability and public image of merchants and businesses within the “Doral Design District”, providing Marketing, Branding, Advocacy and support to the Merchants Association of the Doral Design District membership.

The Merchants Association will encourage our merchant and associate members to conduct business through teamwork, professionalism and ethical principles and most importantly it will create a unified Business Community Voice within the Doral Design District, “One Voice … One District”!

The Doral Design District concept was first introduced to the Doral City Council by Former Vice Mayor Robert Van Name in 2004 to formalize and promote the Design, Tile & Marble, and Building Trades industry sprouting along the NW 79th Avenue and surrounding areas.

Since inception, the City has done a wonderful job facilitating this project with the creation of a Doral Design District Master Plan, a Feasibility Study on the development of a major “Trade-Conference Center within the District, formalized a “Signage Program” with street signs, banners and an entrance features to designate the design district. The City also created a Doral Design District Steering Committee to advise and promote the design district development and is planning a major “Street Fair” in the fall of 2012 to Kick-off and promote the Doral Design District. Association President, Tony DeRosa states, “he is excited for the opportunity and potential to bring the merchant, business and owner community of the Doral Design District together in a united voice and to move the project forward. I look forward to working effectively with the City of Doral and the Merchant Members to promote and facilitate the Doral Design District.”

Vice President, Steve Musolino who will spearhead the Merchants Associations initial membership drive states, “he is amazed at the significant progress that has been made in the establishment of the Merchants Association and looks forward with enthusiasm in working with the Merchant Members and the City to finally make this great project happen!”

Electronic Recycling Services-E-Scrap

The City of Doral is constantly looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint by implementing new initiatives in our operations and services that contribute to the preservation of our natural resources.

The City has initiated a great new program in partnership with E-Scrap, Inc. to provide our residents the opportunity to recycle old electronics, electronic equipment (from PDAs to main frame systems) spent fluorescent lamps, ballasts, commercial and industrial batteries and mercury bearing devices.

The objective is to recycle as much as we can and prevent recyclables from ending up in our landfills, this way we contribute toward our Waste Wise Program. The drop off location (every FOURTH SATURDAY of month from 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm) is at JC Bermudez Park located at 3000 NW 87th Avenue, Doral, FL 33172.

Doral celebrates its 9th Anniversary

Doral celebra a pasos agigantados su 9no. Aniversario

Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez:

La Ciudad de Doral fue una realidad cuando en el 24 de Junio del 2003, formalmente se constituyó como uno de los 34 municipios del Condado Miami Dade.

Han pasado 9 años y es increíble ver cómo en tan poco tiempo ha crecido a pasos agigantados, y reconocida como una de las ciudades más bellas y prósperas del sur de la Florida.

El rápido crecimiento de la ciudad y las reglamentaciones que se han llevado a cabo por sus autoridades, la han transformado poco a poco en una ciudad atractiva; Además de sus calles limpias, el orden, la belleza de sus jardines y parques y la seguridad, es también una ciudad elegida por muchos inmigrantes para vivir e invertir en diferentes tipos de negocios ayudando a su crecimiento y prosperidad.

Hoy en día, es una ciudad que gracias a su excelente ubicación, ha permitido expandir a grandes empresas multinacionales, franquicias, bancos, canales de televisión, hoteles, etc. Y no dejamos de mencionar las escuelas de la ciudad que gracias a su excelente nivel académico han hecho que muchas familias decidan vivir por estos lares.

Verla nacer y desarrollarse, no tiene precio! Somos parte de este desarrollo.

En este aniversario, quisimos saber la opinión de nuestros concejales que cada año han trabajado para hacer de esta ciudad, lo que es actualmente.

He aquí sus comentarios:

Ha sido un honor y un privilegio ser el primer alcalde de la Ciudad de

Doral. Comenzar una ciudad desde el principio, ha sido una experiencia muy positiva para mí. He conocido a mucha gente maravillosa, residentes, empresarios, estudiantes y muchos otros. He sido capaz de trabajar con los ciudadanos, voluntarios y ustedes, nuestros residentes, para construir esta ciudad. Si bien ha habido momentos difíciles, yo, me siento muy orgulloso del trabajo que he llevado a cabo.

Hice una promesa para ayudar a construir una ciudad con un gobierno abierto y transparente, para no aumentar los impuestos, y para construirlo desde cero y me siento orgulloso, de que la promesa se ha cumplido y no sólo hemos creado una ciudad, sino que hemos creado una hermosa comunidad.

The City of Doral became a reality when on June 24th, 2003, it was formally established as one of the 34 municipalities in Miami Dade County. It has been 9

years and it is amazing how in such a short time the city has grown by leaps and bounds, being recognized as one of the most beautiful and prosperous cities in southern Florida.

Doral’s rapid growth, together with its regulations, have been carried out by local authorities, who have gradually transformed it into an attractive city. In addition to the clean streets, the organization, the beauty of its gardens and parks and security, it is also a city of choice for many immigrants who live and invest in different types of businesses helping its growth and prosperity.

Today Doral, because of its great location, has enabled an expansion of large multinational companies, franchises, banks, television stations, hotels, etc. Furthermore, let’s not forget our city’s schools, that thanks to their excellent academic standards have led many families to decide to live in this area.

Seeing Doral’s birth and development, is priceless! We are part of this development.

On this anniversary, we wanted to know the opinion of our councilors who have worked since the beginning to make this city what it is today.

Here are their comments:

It has been an honor and a privilege to be the first Mayor of the City of Doral.

Helping start a city from the beginning has been quite a positive experience.

I have met many wonderful people, residents, business people, and students among others. I have been able to work with citizen-volunteers and with our residents, to build this city. While there have been challenging moments and some difficult times for my family and me, I am proud of the work we have carried out.

I made a promise to help build a city with an open and transparent government, to never raise taxes, to build it from the ground up and I am proud that these promises have been kept. We have not only created a city but also built a community.

Vice Mayor Mike Di Pietro:

El ser concejal en estos últimos 18 meses, me ha permitido tener el privilegio de servir a nuestra ciudad y en base a mi

experiencia, he observado el proceso de crecimiento y los servicios adicionales para ofrecerle a todos nuestros residentes. En el último año y medio se ha visto la apertura de un nuevo parque (Parque de los Veteranos), también se inició la construcción del parque de Perros Amistosos y próximamente tendremos un nuevo parque frente a nuestro nuevo edificio municipal, que consolidará muchos de los servicios de nuestra ciudad en una ubicación conveniente para nuestras empresas y residentes.

Hemos visto mas rutas adicionales y se agregó mas circulación del servicio de trolley de nuestra ciudad, lo que ayuda a que mas peatones lleguen de un punto a otro sin el uso de su propio vehículo. También hemos visto la apertura de muchos nuevos negocios que significa ingresos adicionales para la base fiscal de nuestra ciudad.

He tenido el placer de asistir a numerosos eventos de Doral Business Council (DBC) donde se demuestra el interés activo por

los residentes y por nuestra comunidad empresarial en una continua visibilidad de nuestra ciudad a nivel regional como a nivel internacional.

Desde 2003, cuando la Ciudad de Doral fue incorporada, hemos sido una ciudad muy agresiva desde el inicio. Llevamos a cabo

más de 40 reuniones en nuestro primer año porque teníamos mucho que lograr y para sentar las bases y la infraestructura adecuada en el gobierno de una ciudad nueva. Mirando hacia atrás en los nueve años, creo que hemos logrado eso y mucho más.

Hemos eliminado la mitigación, ganado numerosos premios, como una ciudad progresista, se ha desarrollado un parque pasivo y dos parques de la comunidad con ligas que siguen prosperando y hemos sido un gobierno que no ha aumentado los impuestos. Tenemos un nuevo Ayuntamiento a punto de inaugurar, que servirá como nuestro nuevo lugar de negocios para ofrecer un mejor servicio en los próximos años a nuestros residentes y empresarios.

Seguimos siendo una ciudad joven y el futuro parece muy prometedor. Espero que la próxima generación de líderes de la ciudad pasen al siguiente nivel. Las bases están bien establecidas, pero aún somos una ciudad nueva que constantemente tenemos

que revisar lo que estamos haciendo bien y lo que necesita ser corregido. Hay zonas de nuestra ciudad que necesitan mejorías pero necesitamos salir

adelante para seguir siendo una ciudad líder entre los otros municipios del Sur de Florida.

El futuro es brillante y estará en las manos del próximo Consejo elegido para continuar lo que hemos iniciado y desarrollado. Voy a estar observando y esperando decisiones buenas y sólidas, y, como siempre, basándome en el mejor interés para la Ciudad de Doral. Ha sido una experiencia fantástica y quiero agradecer a todos los residentes y negocios la oportunidad de servir durante estos nueve años. Muchas gracias a todos!

As one of the newly elected Council members, I have had the privilege of serving our city over the last 18 months and it has

been quite busy in my experience as far as growth and added services for our residents. In the past year and half we have seen the opening of a new park (Veterans Park on NW 33 Street), we broke ground on our city’s “Trails and Tails” park (Dog-Friendly park), and will shortly open a new park in front of our soon to open new municipal services (City Hall) building which will consolidate many of our city’s services into one convenient location for our businesses and residents.

We have also seen additional routes and added circulation to our city’s trolley service, which helps pedestrians get from one point to another without the use of their own vehicle. We have also seen the opening of many new businesses which signifies additional revenues for our city’s tax base. I have also had the pleasure of attending numerous Doral Business Council events which continue to grow and demonstrate an active interest from residents and our business community in continued visibility of our city at the regional as well as international level.

Since 2003 when the City of Doral was incorporated, we have been quite aggressive and determined right from the onset.

We held over 40 meetings during our first year because we had so much to accomplish and needed to set the proper foundation and infrastructure for our new city government. Looking back over the nine years, I believe we have achieved that and more. We have eliminated mitigation, have won numerous accolades as a progressive city, have developed one passive park and two community parks with leagues that continue to prosper, and have not raised taxes. We have a new City Hall about to open that will serve as our place of business for years to come and it will be more efficient in serving our residents and businesses. We have addressed many of our infrastructure needs and have laid out future park and green space needs.

We are still a young city and the future looks very promising. The next generation of city leaders will hopefully take Doral to the next level. The foundation is pretty well set but we are still a new city that constantly needs to assess what it is doing well and what needs to be corrected. We have areas in our city that call for improvements and need to be pushed forward so that we continue to be a leader among the other South Florida municipalities.

The future is bright and it will be under the leadership of the next elected Council that we will continue what we have started and developed. I will be watching and expecting good, solid, sound decisions and, as always, only thinking what is in the best interest of our city.

It has been a fantastic experience and I want to thank all the residents and businesses for the opportunity to serve for the past nine years. Thank you all very much!!

El trabajo del Alcalde Juan Carlos Bermúdez en estos nueve años, ha sido extraordinario, porque ha hecho un trabajo espectacular y

merece un gran mérito por todo lo que ha hecho por su honradez, por su ética y por su integridad.

Doral se ha desarrollado en forma adecuada y ha crecido en forma ordenada, se ha llevado con mucho amor y creo que todos los residentes, profesionales, ejecutivos, que verdaderamente aman a esta ciudad han sabido llevarla hacia adelante y por eso tenemos una ciudad como la que tenemos hoy en día.

Doral en nueve años se ha mantenido con un buen paisaje, conocida en el mundo entero, a través del PGA (Professional Golf Association) y con grandes logros sustanciales para todos los inversionistas y para sus residentes, con los mejores parques, viviendas, escuelas y sobretodo la cultura. Aquí tenemos diferentes culturas y creo que eso es lo hace que Doral sea mejor cada día...

Creo que hay que hacer unos ajustes en la planificación y en la organización de sus calles, pero eso dependerá de quienes asuman el

roll político de esta ciudad en las próximas elecciones.En lo consiguiente, espero que Doral crezca armónicamente con un resultado positivo,

espero planificación, organización, identidad cultural, y espero que la gente se una y que, haya un equipo de trabajo preparado para luchar por la ciudad, en un equilibrio fundamental para que Doral siga desarrollándose como ha venido desarrollándose.

A pesar de que nunca me había imaginado en el servicio público, dar y ayudar a los demás ha estado en el centro de toda mi vida

adulta. Siento que he sido bendecido en mi vida y el hecho de servir a los demás, me llena de satisfacción. Estos últimos nueve años han sido una experiencia increíble en mi vida. He tenido la oportunidad de conocer a tantas personas maravillosas que han tocado mi vida.

He vivido en esta comunidad durante 24 años y durante los últimos nueve he tenido la oportunidad de jugar en la formación maravillosa de nuestra ciudad. Realmente me siento honrado y privilegiado. Casi 11 años atrás, antes de la creación de nuestra ciudad, un grupo de individuos, como JC Bermúdez (nuestro alcalde actual), Mike DiPietro (actual miembro del Consejo), Sandra Ruiz (ex-miembro del Consejo), Robert Van Name (ex Consejo miembros), Santiago Sellan, José Tavares y yo, unidos creamos una visión para el Doral, “One Doral”.

Esta visión y el trabajo en equipo en el Ayuntamiento original junto con las muestras de apoyo de la comunidad, es lo que ha permitido

llevar esto a cabo en un plazo breve de tiempo. Durante estos últimos nueve años, Doral ha experimentado un enorme crecimiento

y ahora entramos en una nueva era para la ciudad. Será una época en la que vamos a forjar una nueva visión y que nos llevará a nuevas alturas. Van a ser tiempos muy emocionantes para Doral. Será una época en la que vamos a mejorar nuestra calidad, con más actividades recreativas, culturales, plazas cívicas, actividades comunitarias y, posiblemente, uno de los períodos con mas fuerte desarrollo económico.

Me siento orgulloso de haber formado parte de la historia de esta ciudad, pero también estoy muy emocionado por ser parte de este futuro muy brillante.

The work that Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez has done in these nine years has been extraordinary. He has done a spectacular

job and deserves great merit for his honesty, ethics and integrity.Doral has been properly developed and grown orderly, it has

been done with love, and I believe that all residents, professionals, executives, who truly care for this city have taken it forward, so we have a city like the one we have today.

Doral, in nine years, has maintained a superior landscape, renown worldwide through the PGA (Professional Golf Association). Additionally it offers an extraordinary environment for investors and residents alike, with the best parks, homes, schools and especially people with different backgrounds. Here we have a melting pot of cultures and I think that is what makes Doral more interesting everyday more ...

I think we should make some adjustments in the planning and organization of its streets, but it all depends on those who assume the political role of the city in the next elections.

I therefore hope that Doral keeps growing harmoniously with positive results, and I hope for planning, organization, cultural identity. I hope that the people will come together to create a team willing to fight for the city in a crucial balance so Doral continues to expand as it has been doing so far.

Although I had never envisioned myself in Public Service, giving and helping others has been at the center of my entire adult

life. I feel that I have been blessed in my life and serving others and giving back fulfills me. These last nine years have been an amazing experience in my life. I have had to the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people that have touched my life. So often I have been thanked for helping but the one that has been blessed is me. I have lived in this community for 24 years and for the last nine I have had the opportunity to participate in the wonderful formation of our city. I truly feel honored and privileged. Almost 11 years ago, prior to the creation of our city, a group of individuals, JC Bermudez (our current Mayor), Mike DiPietro (current Council Member), Sandra Ruiz (ex-Council Member), Robert Van Name (ex-Council Member), Santiago Sellan, Jose Tavares and myself, united to create a vision for Doral, “One Doral”.

This vision, the united teamwork of the original City Council and the outpouring of support from the community is what enabled us to accomplish so much in such short period of time.

During these last nine years Doral has experienced tremendous growth and now we enter a new era for our city. It will be very exciting times for Doral. It will be an era in which we will forge a new vision that will take us to new heights. It will be a era in which we will continue to enhance our quality with more recreational and cultural activities, a downtown area, civic plazas, community activities and possibly one of the strongest economic development periods of the last years.

I am proud to have been part of the history but I am just as excited about being part of this very bright future.

Miami atrae a Hollywood

Durante la reunión de la Comisión del Condado de Miami-Dade, el Presidente

de la Comisión Joe A. Martinez, presentó a sus colegas una propuesta que estimulara el desarrollo económico y la creación de empleos en el Condado. El Presidente Martinez unió esfuerzos con el Señor Donald J. Trump y la Organización Trump, para presentar su propuesta y visión de crear estudios cinematográficos en Miami-Dade. Durante la presentación el Presidente pidió a sus colegas la posibilidad de explorar la construcción de una “ciudad” de estudios cinematográficos utilizando terrenos vacantes que pertenecen al Condado y que están ubicadas cerca de la Base de la Reserva Aérea de Homestead. La creación de unos estudios de producción cinematográficos de esta magnitud no sólo ayudará a estimular nuestra economía actual atreves de la creación de puestos de trabajo, sino que también ayudará a revitalizar el área de Homestead y Florida City, que han sido muy afectados durante la crisis económica y ha estado luchando desde entonces para su reconstrucción.

“Muchas películas y programas de televisión se han filmado en Miami, pero

nunca hemos podido beneficiarnos del gran potencial a que representa la industria del cine, ya que muchas filmaciones deben concluirse en los estudios en Los Ángeles”, dijo el presidente Martínez. “Si existe la disponibilidad y los recursos para la construcción de unos estudios, y se tiene una gran cantidad de terrenos vacantes donde construirlos a un bajo costo, no me cabe duda de que al poner esta propuesta al alcance de los productores cinematográficos estarán dispuestos a aprovechar esta oportunidad”.

Según los planes preliminares, “Trump Studio

City”, está diseñado a la altura de las instalaciones más modernas de Europa. Se construiría en un terreno que abarca 3.16 millas en Homestead. Incluirá estudios de cine, escenografías, terrenos, los estudios más modernos para producción digital, un hotel y oficinas. Este sería un proyecto de mayor magnitud que los estudios de Hollywood. Michael D. Cohen, Vicepresidente Ejecutivo y Consejero Especial de Donald J. Trump informó a la Junta que esta industria podría generar localmente hasta 262, 000 dólares al día. In an effort to stimulate economic development and job growth in Miami-Dade County, Chairman Joe A. Martinez presented a business opportunity to his colleagues at today’s County Commission meeting. Chairman Martinez joined

forces with Mr. Donald J. Trump and the Trump Organization to present his vision to bring a new job industry to Miami-Dade – filmmaking. The Chairman’s presentation asked his fellow commissioners to explore the possibility of building a film studio “city” on County-owned land next to the Homestead Air Reserve Base. This media city, Chairman Martinez explained, will not only help stimulate our current struggling economy by creating jobs, but it will also help revitalize the area of Homestead and Florida City which took a major hit during the economic downturn and has been struggling ever since to rebuild itself.

“Many movies and TV shows have been filmed in Miami, but we’ve never been truly able to capitalize on the film industry as many studios opt to complete their work in Los Angeles,” said Chairman Martinez. “If the resources of a studio and a wealth of land to build massive sets – at a cheaper cost – were at filmmakers’ fingertips, I don’t doubt that they would be eager to take advantage of the opportunity.”

According to preliminary plans, “Trump Studio City”, designed after the most modern facilities in Europe, would be built on land spanning 3.16 miles in Homestead, and would consist of film studios and stages, back lots, a media hub, state of the art digital production, hotel, and offices making this bigger and greater than Hollywood. Michael D. Cohen, Executive Vice President and Special Council to Donald J. Trump informed the Board that this industry could inject as much as $262,000 a day in local revenue.

In a unanimous vote, the Board directed the County Attorney’s office to provide a report within 90 days outlining the status of the land and to place a 180-day moratorium on any recommendation for the utilization of the land in question.

“This will make Miami-Dade County the jewel of our great state,” said Chairman Martinez.

On June 11, 2012, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) began the NW 25 Street Construction project between the Palmetto Expressway/State Road (SR) 826 and NW 89 Court. This project is

expected to last approximately three and a half years and cost an estimated of $58.5 million. The project is designed to improve the flow of traffic and facilitate the movement of goods in and out of the cargo facilities at Miami International Airport (MIA). It will include:

• Total reconstruction of NW 25 Street from the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) to 89 Court • Widening of NW 25 Street over the North Line Canal;• The addition of a third westbound through lane from NW 82 Avenue to NW 89 Court• Construction of a viaduct (an elevated bridge) situated above NW 25 Street

which will have one eastbound and one westbound lane that will connect with the existing viaduct just east of the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) and touch

down just east of NW 82 Avenue;• New signalization, street

lighting, landscaping, water and sewer main and pedestrian features.

During construction there will be four lanes of traffic (two eastbound and two westbound) open from the Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) to 89 Court. There will also be a reduction in the number of travel lanes on 79, 82, 84 and 87 Avenues to the north and south of NW 25 Street. In order to complete key construction activities, lane closures will occur

at various locations during the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 5:30 a.m., Sunday through Saturday. In addition, detours will be necessary to construct the viaduct over NW 25th Street. Information on these and any other detours will be provided well in advance. Access to businesses will be maintained at all times throughout the project.

El 11 de junio del 2012, el Departa-mento de Transpor-

te de Florida (FDOT) inició un proyecto de construc-ción en la Calle 25 del no-roeste, entre el Palmetto Expressway/Carretera Es-tatal 826 y la 89 Court del noroeste. Se espera que el proyecto tarde aproxi-madamente tres años y medio en completar, a un costo estimado de $58.5 millones. Este proyecto se ha diseñado para mejorar el flujo del tráfico y facilitar el transporte de mercan-cías hacia y/o desde las instalaciones de carga del Aeropuerto Internacional de Miami (MIA). El proyec-to consiste en:

• La reconstrucción to-tal de la Calle 25 del noroeste, entre el Palmetto

Durante el periodo de la construcción, cuatro carriles permanecerán abiertos (dos carriles rumbo este, y dos rumbo oeste) desde el Palmetto Expressway (SR 826) hasta la 89 Court del noroeste. Además, se realizará la reducción de carriles en las avenidas 79, 82, 84 y 87 hacia el norte y al sur de la Ca-lle 25 del noroeste. Con el fin de completar los aspectos clave del proyecto, algunos carriles serán cerrados entre las 8:00 p.m. y las 5:30 a.m., de domingo a sába-do, en varios sitios. También será necesario implementar desvíos

Hay muchos voluntarios comprometidos dia-riamente con aportar su tiempo y talentos en todas las escuelas de Doral y especial-

mente en Ronald W.Reagan/Doral Senior High School, pero la experiencia integral de Zenaida Vilar, quien ha trabajado activamente como vo-luntaria durante todas las etapas escolares de sus hijas desde Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center, Doral Middle School y ahora en RRDSHS, constituye un activo valiosísimo para la Asociación de Padres, Maestros y Estudiantes (PTSA) que presidirá du-rante el año escolar 2012-2013. Una selección me-recida y oportuna.

La familia Vilar constituida por Zenaida, Enrique y sus hijas Gabriela y Andrea, viven en Doral hace 11 años. Han visto crecer las escuelas y con ellas la comunidad entera. Aman el trabajo voluntario y comunitario, porque como bien lo expresa Ze-naida: “hay un poema del venezolano Andrés Eloy Blanco que dice ‘cuando se tiene un hijo, tienes todos los niños de la tierra’ y eso es cierto. Mi es-poso y yo siempre hemos pensado que hogar y escuela van de la mano juntos y eso es lo que nos lleva a compartir el tiempo como voluntarios en la escuela de nuestras hijas. Si la escuela esta bien, tu comunidad esta bien. Si tu comunidad esta bien, tus hijos están seguros.”

En la Junta del PTSA, mayor compromiso y res-ponsabilidades

Desde su país natal, Venezuela, ya Zenaida y Enrique donaban tiempo de trabajo voluntario al pre-escolar de sus hijas. Al llegar aquí, donde ser voluntario es un valor para el país y la sociedad, inmediatamente comenzaron a participar como padres de soporte en aula, chaperones de paseos, apoyo logístico en eventos y contacto con empre-sarios de la ciudad para conseguir donaciones y fondos para las escuelas hasta que, cuando su hija menor estaba en 5to. Grado, Zenaida formalizó el compromiso de donar aún mas tiempo a la escue-la, al aceptar la nominación para formar parte de la Junta Directiva del PTSA en EBT como vicepresi-dente de recaudación de fondos.

La principal diferencia entre un voluntario regu-lar, un miembro regular del PTSA y los voluntarios que aceptan participar como parte de la Junta Di-rectiva es que, como Zenaida explica, “adquieres un compromiso más formal con todo el colegio. Sigues siendo voluntario, pero con más trabajo y responsabilidades, te ves sometido a auditorias,

a los procedimientos de la organización. Como miembro voluntario solamente muchas veces tu aporte es hasta anónimo, mientras que al partici-par en la Junta del PTSA tu nombre es referencia, lo que haces está mas a la vista. Es un gran com-promiso y responsabilidad”.

En el año escolar 2011-2012, Zenaida Vilar no solamente participó como VP encargada de los voluntarios en la Junta del RRDSH-PTSA. Simul-táneamente formó parte del PTSA de Doral Middle School, aun cuando ya sus dos hijas egresaron de esa escuela. “Lamentablemente no hay una ge-neración de relevo de padres voluntarios en esa escuela que asumiera el compromiso de trabajar el PTSA de Doral Middle School y uno cuando es voluntario termina queriendo el colegio como parte de tu familia extendida; DMS tiene un lugar espe-cial en mi corazón. Así que tome la decisión de continuar trabajando allí también voluntariamente. Me quedé para continuar apoyando una escuela que es excelente”.

¿Cómo me hago voluntario?En su experiencia personal, Zenaida encontró

que los voluntarios para colaborar en las escuelas

no deben temer hacerlo por no dominar el inglés o por ser extranjeros y estar recién llegados. “Tienes que acercarte a los maestros desde el principio por los canales que ellos establezcan. Ellos necesitan el apoyo de los padres. Tienes que anticipar sus necesidades, apoyarles. Ser humilde y servicial, estar atento a las necesidades del otro para ayu-darle. Igualmente quienes están ya dentro traba-jando como voluntarios en las escuelas, deben ser humildes y receptivos, abrirse a incorporar y motivar a la gente nueva que viene con deseo de aprender a trabajar y orientarlos sobre como ha-cerlo. Eso va a motivar mas gente a que se sienta cómoda para participar y ayudar”. Esto es suma-mente importante para quienes recién llegan a la ciudad y se incorporan al sistema. Trabajar como voluntario en el sistema escolar requiere seguir un procedimiento de registro que es común a todas las escuelas.

Zenaida explica que para registrarse como vo-luntario hay que acudir a la oficina de la escuela donde la persona quiera donar su tiempo pues cada una tiene algunas variantes del proceso bá-sico que incluye: “pedir el numero de identifica-ción como padre en la escuela o en el website de Dadeschools y llenar la planilla con los datos per-sonales que permitirán a la Junta Escolar (School Board) hacer una investigación antes de emitir un código de voluntario aprobado para que puedas trabajar en las escuelas donde te registres. Para poder trabajar con niños hay que pasar todo ese sistema de seguridad, es muy lógico. Lo mas im-portante es la seguridad de los niños”

Actualmente, los voluntarios tienen acceso a muchos adiestramientos que les permiten adquirir conocimientos para hacer más efectivo su trabajo. Hay varios niveles de voluntario, desde el básico para ser padre de aula o chaperón de paseos, has-ta la certificación nivel 3, que exige pasar varios cursos y chequeo de huellas digitales, para poder acompañar paseos con pernocta. “Ya las personas no tienen la excusa de que nadie les explico los procedimientos. Todo está disponible. Te envían los emails con la información necesaria. Los pro-cesos te los explican y te educan para que apoyes a la escuela con la mayor efectividad.” Solo basta tener el deseo, el compromiso, seguir las reglas y estar atento a las necesidades de los maestros; muchas veces hay trabajo voluntario que puede hacerse desde la casa o fuera del horario laboral y es una ayuda invaluable para la escuela entera.

El próximo año escolar Zenaida Vilar cumplirá 4 años trabajando como voluntaria dentro de la Secundaria Ronald Reagan y comenta que “es una escuela con mucha seguridad, con muchas actividades, los muchachos son respetados como individuos a la vez que reciben una excelente edu-cación. Son felices, es un ambiente muy sano. Y lo digo no como miembro del PTSA, sino como madre objetiva que esta pendiente de lo que ha-cen y dicen sus hijas. Los mismos muchachos sa-ben que hay algunos que consumen drogas, igual que sucede en otros colegios. Y muchos de esos niños que usan drogas han venido ya con ese pro-blema de esos otros colegios. La policía escolar que siempre está dentro monitoreando la seguri-dad y la administración de la escuela, cuando de-tectan ese problema lo manejan de la manera co-rrecta según el Código de Conducta escolar, con la confidencialidad y respeto que corresponde a los menores que pudieran estar involucrados”

“La comunidad de RRDSH es una gran familia, ahí todo se sabe, es un pequeño pueblo. Si hay algo que sucede los muchachos lo comentan todo y son sensibles a las necesidades de los demás; son solidarios y unidos. Se aprecian y se quieren. Jamás he escuchado a los muchachos comentar casos de acoso. En otra escuela que no reforzara la sensibilidad, la tolerancia, el respeto y la solidari-dad, muchos muchachos podrían llegar a sentirse relegados. En Reagan no es así. Las autoridades están pendientes de reforzar las reglas, pero tam-bién los muchachos se cuidan y se protegen los unos a los otros”.

Prioridades: Que no le falte nada a nuestros es-tudiantes y unir a la comunidad

El año escolar pasado, el objetivo del RRDSH PTSA fue apoyar el reconocimiento a nivel nacio-nal de la escuela e incrementar la participación comunitaria. Ambos objetivos fueron logrados con creces. Durante su futura gestión como Presidente del PTSA de Reagan, Zenaida Vilar desea apoyar a que la escuela “continúe siendo un buen colegio. Quiero recaudar más fondos para cubrir las nece-sidades tanto tecnológicas como de paseos de extensión educativa. Que podamos proveer como organización para que en la escuela de nuestros hijos no falte absolutamente nada, a ninguno de los estudiantes. Y que los maestros tengan todos los recursos. Con tantos recortes presupuestarios a nivel nacional y estatal que terminan de algún modo afectando los presupuestos para educa-ción, la comunidad de padres debe aportar más, buscando apoyo de los negocios y empresas pri-vadas para cubrir todas las necesidades que nues-tras escuelas puedan tener”.

“Quiero que todas las familias de Doral se involu-cren y conozcan desde adentro a nuestra escuela y aprendan a quererla; que estén informados sobre

las realidades y participen en los eventos que allí se realicen. Que apoyen como voluntarios. En mi gestión quiero incen-tivar a que las familias de la ciudad se integren a participar en la escuela. Quiero motivar a los voluntarios de las otras escuelas a asistir a las activi-dades de Reagan para que la vayan conociendo, para pre-parar la generación de relevo, que realmente aprecie y valore nuestras escuelas públicas. Vamos a comunicar a la co-munidad la agenda de las ac-tividades para que todo Doral pueda participar. Es un asunto de vecinos, de comunidad, de ciudad, de boca en boca. Es responsabilidad de todos cuidar y que-rer nuestra escuela y mantenerla excelente como es actualmente. Depende de todos los que vienen más atrás de nosotros”

“Se sabe que en la Ciudad de Doral hay proble-mas de droga en ciertos sectores. Es un problema pequeño, pero existe, no es un problema de las escuelas sino general de la sociedad, de toda la comunidad. Nuestro apor-te como organización será continuar educando a la población con las char-las que proporcionamos para prevenir y erradicar ese y otros problemas. Los seguiremos invitando por todos los medios posibles, incluyendo panfletos repartidos en la puerta de la escuela. Vamos a continuar invitando a toda la

comunidad para que venga y participe. Son even-tos educativos muy importantes.”

Personas como Zenaida Vilar, con cariño y vo-cación de servicio, con deseo de construir comu-nidad y ciudad, son las personas que Doral nece-sita. Ese cariño y compromiso de los padres hacia sus escuelas públicas de Doral es fundamental para garantizar que estas mantengan su calidad actual.

El pasado 24 de Mayo, en total cumplimiento de los estatutos establecidos por la or-ganización, tuvo lugar el proceso electoral para los nuevos miembros voluntarios de la Junta Directiva de la Asociación de Padres, Maestros y Estudiantes (PTSA) de la escuela secundaria Ronald W.Reagan/Doral Senior High School quedando constituida de la siguiente manera para el año escolar 2012-2013:

Family health care is an issue of utmost importance for the population. Receiving personalized service and comprehensive

health care, within short distance from home and with convenient transportation is priceless. MJ Medical and Dental Group is an office that has these advantages and more. Office hours are Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 or 10:00 pm, Fridays until 5:00 pm and Saturday from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm. There is no excuse for those who delay health care because there will always be an appointment at a convenient time to meet everyone needs, whether regular care or minor emergencies.

Sample collection for lab work is done all day long, with or without an appointment and the center works with all laboratories depending on patient’s insurance. They also have electrocardiogram and ultrasound service because the idea is, as mentioned by Mrs. Marrero, “tend to the patient’s specific emergency and if there is a need for additional care, refer them to specialists. Take care of the condition that the patient has at the moment: throat, ear, fever. We do everything possible to take care of most patient needs, always with the option of referral to a specialist if necessary. “

In Pediatrics, they provide general medicine

service, immunizations, preventive care and everything needed for children’s health. In the dental department, they have 2 dentists, Dr. Norberto Rodriguez and Dr. Alejandro Hernandez, who attend the center weekly to service general and cosmetic dentistry, maxillofacial surgery, endodontics and periodontics. There are also 3 specialists in orthodontics. The dental department hours are from 8 am to 7 pm and Wednesday and Thursday until 9:30 or 10:00 pm for those who need those late hour appointments.

With regard to behavioral therapies, they have a team of psychologists to work with families, children and couples. Although some of these services are not covered by insurance, if the patient requires paying cash, they offer “a sliding scale, with the best prices based on the income of the person so they can have access to services they need.”

La atención de la salud familiar es un tema de suma importancia para la población. Poder contar con un servicio de salud personalizado e

integral, a poca distancia del hogar y con transporte disponible es siempre conveniente. Estas ventajas están presentes en el MJ Medical and Dental Group, constituido por un equipo bilingüe de “médicos pri-marios que atienden pediatría y adultos y un equipo de odontólogos. Tenemos también terapistas con-ductuales, para la salud mental de adultos y niños”. Quien así define este centro de servicios integrales de salud es la Sra. Julie Marrero, terapista y adminis-tradora del mismo.

El departamento médico tiene horarios muy con-venientes, en especial para pacientes de edad avan-zada que requieren atención mas personalizada o necesitan compañía y asistencia para llegar a sus citas médicas. Hay citas disponibles de lunes a jue-ves de 8 am a 9:30 o 10:00 pm, los viernes hasta las 5:00 pm y los sábados de 8:00am a 2:00 pm. No hay excusa para aquellos que postergan cuidar su salud, pues siempre habrá la cita en el momento conve-niente para atender sus necesidades, sean regulares o de urgencias menores.

Ofrecen servicio de toma de muestras a toda hora, con o sin cita y trabajan con todos los laboratorios. Igualmente tienen servicio de electrocardiograma y ultrasonido pues la idea es, como comenta la Sra. Marrero, “atacar la emergencia concreta del paciente y si hay una necesidad mas seria y especifica enton-ces referirlos al especialista. Atendemos la condición que el paciente tenga en el momento: garganta, oído, fiebre. Hacemos lavado de oído, cirugías menores; en fin, todo lo posible para cubrir al máximo las ne-cesidades, siempre con la opción de referirlos a un especialista si es necesario.”

En el departamento de pediatría, proveen el servi-cio de medicina general, vacunación, cuidado pre-ventivo y todo lo necesario para la salud infantil. En el departamento dental, cuentan con 2 odontólogos, Alejandro Rodríguez y Norberto Hernández, quienes asisten al centro semanalmente para prestar servicio de odontología general, cosmética, cirugía maxilofa-cial, endodoncia y periodoncia y 3 especialistas en ortodoncia. Los horarios del departamento dental son de 8am a 7 pm y miércoles y jueves hasta 9:30 o 10:00 pm para quienes requieran esos horarios nocturnos.

Con respecto a terapias de conducta, cuentan con un equipo de psicólogos para trabajar con familias, niños y parejas. Aun cuando algunos de estos ser-vicios no están cubiertos por los seguros, en el caso que el paciente requiera cancelarlos en efectivo ofre-cen “una escala de pagos, con los mejores precios basados en el ingreso de la persona para que pue-dan tener acceso a los servicios que necesitan”.

En el MJ Medical and Dental Group trabajan con todos los seguros médicos y dentales aprobados en Miami-Dade y en el estado de Florida, al igual que los planes del gobierno como Medicare, Medic-aid y Florida Kid Care. Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center, one of our top schools here at Doral has many success stories and we want to share two examples of these accomplishments involving the seventh grade gifted class of this school.

The students in seventh grade social studies, guided by Mr. Hector Suco, were learning about the “Roles of the President.” One of the President’s responsibilities is to answer letters from ordinary Americans. In order to fully understand this lesson first hand, Mr. Suco asked the students to write a letter to President Obama, and by doing so they could focus on the foundations of writing a letter: introduction, body, conclusion, and signature. The letters were sent to the White House and two weeks later, the class got an incredible surprise: the President had written back! The students were thrilled and ecstatic. In his letter President Obama thanked the students for writing to him, and stated: “one of the important things I can do as a President is to make sure your tomorrow is as bright as it can be. Young people like you are America’s future and whether we fall behind or rise ahead as a Nation will depend largely on your generation.” With this illustrative assignment the students learned first-hand the power of writing, and President Obama became aware of a group of incredible students at EBT K-8 Center.

Another achievement of Mr. Suco’s class was related specifically to one student: Arianna Guzman, who won an award at the Istanbul Center, Art and Essay Contest 2012. The theme of the essay contest was “1 Billion Hungry in the World: What’s your role?” The students participated in this regional contest together with other middle and high schools from Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee. For the middle school essay contest, Arianna Guzman wrote about hunger in Africa. “I imagined travelling to this continent and interacting with people that have nothing to eat. I envisioned what it would feel like to live there. Hunger has an effect on all humanity,” claims Arianna. Arianna won an Honorable Mention and attended the ceremony together with her proud family and her EBT teacher.

These two achievements illustrate how our public schools allow students to enhance their learning experience with tangible assignments that help them better understand their environment to prepare for a successful future.

El Centro K-8 Eugenia B. Thomas, una de las escuelas estelares de nues-tra ciudad tiene muchas historias exitosas y queremos compartir dos de ellas que ocurrieron en la clase avanzada de séptimo grado.

Los estudiantes de esta clase, guiados por el Profesor Héctor Suco, esta-ban aprendiendo sobre las “Funciones del Presidente”. Una responsabilidad del Presidente es responderles las cartas a los ciudadanos. Para que los estudiantes entendieran este concepto de primera mano, el Profesor Suco les pidió que escribieran una carta al Presidente Obama. Con esta asignación los estudiantes ponían en práctica los conceptos para escribir una carta: en-cabezado, introducción, cuerpo y el cierre con firma. Las cartas se enviaron a la Casa Blanca y dos semanas más tarde, esta clase tuvo la mayor de las sorpresas cuando recibieron una respuesta del Presidente Obama! Los estu-diantes estaban realmente emocionados. En dicha carta el Presidente agra-dece a los estudiantes que le hubiesen escrito y les dice: “una de las cosas más relevantes que debo hacer como Presidente es asegurarme que tengan un mejor porvenir. La gente joven como Uds. son el futuro de este país y si retrocedemos o crecemos como una nación, dependerá en gran parte de su generación”. Con esta asignación los estudiantes comprendieron el poder de la escritura y aprovecharon para darse a conocer en la Casa Blanca.

Otro logro de la clase del Profesor Suco está relacionado directamente con la alumna Arianna Guzmán. Arianna ganó el premio del concurso de arte y ensayos de Estambul: “1 Billón de Hambre en el Mundo, Cuál es tu rol? Los estudiantes que tomaron parte en este concurso regional venían de otros estados como Alabama, Georgia, Carolina del Sur y Tennessee. Para el con-curso de ensayos, Arianna escribió sobre el hambre en África. “Me imaginé viajando a este continente e interactuando con personas que no tienen nada para comer. Vislumbré como sería vivir ahí. El hambre afecta a toda la huma-nidad, “explica Arianna. Arianna ganó mención honorable y recibió su premio al lado de su orgullosa familia y profesor.

Estos son sólo algunos ejemplos de cómo nuestras escuelas públicas ofre-cen actividades y oportunidades tangibles que ayudan a que nuestros hijos entiendan su entorno para preparase mejor para el mañana.

Understanding the Credit Report by the Hand of Julie Stav

More committed than ever, Julie Stav, financial expert and well known advisor to the Hispanic Community on issues

related to money use, establishing and managing credit and personal financial stability, is working actively on her mission: to provide up-to-date and useful information for decision making on harsh economic times.

Julie approaches personal finances in a very down-to-earth way making this information appealing for any audience, but her main focus nowadays is to reach all women and provide them tools to educate and make them aware on the importance of financial issues. As per Julie’s words: “Women today have so much power and have overcome many barriers by playing different roles in life, either as a mother, housewife or professional, but still they need information in the financial field”. Throughout history women have learned to defend themselves against domestic, emotional and physical abuse, but they still struggle with the so-called “economic abuse”. It is important to begin by acknowledging that many women are “victims” of this abuse, when consciously or unconsciously they transfer their financial power to their partners, rejecting the right to know how to function in that environment, “some women have neglected financials to an extreme that they don’t even know how to write a check after their partners passes away. Women need to stop being invisible in this country and start concentrating on creating a good credit regardless of whether or not they have a full time job or even if they have social security numbers”, Julie explains.

This awareness and action are critical at this time because of the great effect of credit in Americans’ life: The “credit score”, a small three-digit number which says a lot more about us than a long speech. Approximately 95% of banks and other financial institutions use the credit report and the credit score to determine how much loan they can approve and which interest rate they grant. This also determines monthly payments of purchases; it affects employment opportunities, homeownership, insurance policies, purchase of vehicles and basically all transactions of major assets. It has been established a close relationship between how

a person takes care of his personal credit report with the way they behave in their private lives. It is so, as financial firms assuming a consistent life, relate paying bills on time to be a responsible and organized person, employers with the ability to get to work on time or fully perform the duties, and vehicle insurance companies to the tendency to driving within speed limits.

Precisely because of these factors, Julie’s work has great impact at this time. Entendiendo la Importancia del Crédito de la Mano de Julie Stav

Hoy más que nunca Julie Stav, reconocida experta financiera y principal consejera para la comunidad hispana en temas rela-

cionados con el uso del dinero, control del crédito y estabilidad financiera, está comprometida y ac-tiva en su misión: proporcionar herramientas ac-tuales y útiles para la toma de decisiones en estos tiempos de optimización económica.

Aunque Julie aborda las finanzas personales de forma práctica para cualquier audiencia, se ha de-dicado con esmero en informar y proporcionar he-rramientas principalmente a la mujer. En palabras de Julie, “La mujer hoy día tiene mucho poder y ha roto muchos techos de cristal en sus diferentes roles, bien sea como madre, ama de casa o profe-sional, pero aun existe mucha necesidad de infor-mación en el campo financiero”. Esta necesidad no se altera porque la mujer trabaje fuera de casa o lo haga en el hogar: producir dinero no implica finanzas ordenadas, así como tampoco quedarse en casa es sinónimo de aislamiento. Los diferentes roles de la mujer la empujan a entender cómo fun-ciona el historial de crédito y cómo afecta la esta-bilidad financiera a su familia.

A través de la historia, las mujeres han aprendido a defenderse de abusos domésticos, emocionales y físicos, pero aun luchan con el llamado “abuso económico”. Es importante comenzar por recono-cer que muchas mujeres son “víctimas” de este abuso, cuando consciente o inconscientemente, ceden su poder adquisitivo y financiero a sus pare-jas, rechazando el derecho de saber desenvolver-se en estos entornos. “La mujer se ha desvincula-do a tal punto que a veces al enviudar no sabe ni siquiera cómo hacer un cheque. Es necesario que las mujeres dejen de ser invisibles en este país y puedan concentrarse en crear un buen crédito sin importar que tengan o no, un trabajo fuera de casa o incluso, que no tengan seguro social”, como nos explica Julie.

Esta acción es muy urgente en estos tiempos gracias a la importancia del crédito en los Estados Unidos donde el “credit score”, un pequeño núme-ro de tres dígitos, dice mucho sin utilizar palabras y afecta por igual a hombres y mujeres. Aproxi-madamente el 95% de los bancos e instituciones financieras utilizan este historial para determinar cuánto dinero concederán en préstamo y a cual tasa de interés. Esto también determina el mon-to de pagos de bienes, afecta al buscar empleo, adquirir vivienda, pólizas de seguros, compra de vehículos y básicamente todas las transacciones de compras a crédito de bienes importantes. Se ha establecido una relación muy estrecha entre la

manera en que una persona cuida su crédito, con la forma en que se comporta en su vida privada. Es así pues, como las empresas financieras asu-miendo una vida congruente, relacionan el pagar las cuentas a tiempo con ser una persona respon-sable y organizada; empleadores con la capacidad de llegar a tiempo al trabajo y cumplir los deberes cabalmente; y empresas de seguros de vehículos con cumplir las leyes y manejar en los límites de velocidad permitidos.

Precisamente por estos factores, el trabajo de Julie tiene grandes efectos en este mo-mento. Miami Music Project celebrated yet another great season with their Fantastic Season Finale concert

The Miami Music Project (MMP) celebrated last night their 2011-12 Season with a sold-out concert, full of smiles and great music.

The Miami Music Project Orchestral Academy (MMPOA) started in Doral less than two years ago, with a small orchestra of 15 young musicians and dreams of transforming children lives through music. The program has now grown to almost 300 students in both Doral and their new chapter in Little Haiti.

The Wertheim Performing Arts Center of FIU got filled with various levels of great music with performances from the Music Initiation, Corelli, Vivaldi and Beethoven orchestras, featuring very young musicians, ages 4 to 18, who excitingly showed the audience what they worked so hard on throughout this season.

Dr. Orlando Garcia, Director of FIU School of Music, welcomed the audience of 600, and announced a new partnership between FIU’s College of Architecture and the Arts and MMP. “We believe in the mission of Miami Music Project and are very excited about this partnership” said Garcia, and added “starting next season FIU will provide great music instruction to MMP’s musicians through some of the most talented graduate students from FIU School of Music.”

Besides great melodies composed by Mozart, Dvorak and Tchaikovsky, Miami Music Project shared exciting news about how they will be composing better lives during the 2012-13 Season, starting in August. “MMP’s

new alliances with FIU, New World Symphony, Miami Symphony Orchestra and stronger than ever partnership with the Miami-Dade County Public Schools will offer great opportunities for our students to become better musicians and citizens” said Anna Pietraszko, Executive Director of MMP, then she added “the work will continue this summer with our first ever MMP Summer Camps in both MMPOA locations in Doral and Little Haiti, and we have great events planned

for the upcoming season, including our fifth performance at the Adrienne Arsht Center”.

Miami Music Project is a non-profit organization that uses music as an instrument for social transformation, empowering children to acquire values and achieve their full potential, positively affecting their society through the study and performance of music.

“As excited as we are about the growth of our programs, we are even more excited about the development of the children in the communities we

serve” said Emil Stefanutti, Vice-Chairman of MMP, “this season we witnessed tremendous musical improvement from our students and were proud to see 85% of them become Honor Roll students at their schools, proving the benefits of having music in the lives of our youth.”

Miami Music Project celebró otra gran temporada con suConcierto “Fin de temporada Fantástica”

El proyecto de música de Miami (MMP en in-gles) celebró el cierre de la temporada 2011-12 el pasado 6 de junio, con un concierto en

la FIU, con entradas agotadas, lleno de sonrisas y buena música.

El Miami Music Project Orchestral Academy (MMPOA) se inició en Doral hace dos años atrás, con una pequeña orquesta compuesta por unos quince niños; Desde entonces los sueños de estos niños se han transformando a través de la música. Hoy en día, el proyecto se ha convertido en un só-lido programa que le brinda la oportunidad a más de 300 niños de aprender música, todas las sema-nas, sin costo alguno, tanto en la ciudad de Doral como en su nuevo núcleo en la Pequeña Haití.

El Wertheim Performing Arts Center de FIU se llenó con varios niveles de buena música con ac-tuaciones desde la iniciación musical, hasta la or-questa de Corelli, Vivaldi y Beethoven, realizada con músicos muy jóvenes, con edades entre los 4 a 18 años que mostraron a la audiencia el trabajo que aprendieron durante toda esta temporada.

El Dr. Orlando García, Director de la Escuela de Música de la FIU, dio la bienvenida a la audiencia, y anuncio la nueva alianza entre la facultad de Arqui-tectura y Artes de FIU y MMP. “Nosotros creemos en este proyecto y estamos muy contentos con esta alianza”, dijo García. “A partir de la próxima temporada, FIU proveerá instructores a MMP a través de algunos de los estudiantes graduados más talentosos de la Escuela de música de FIU”.

Además de grandes melodías compuestas por

Mozart, Dvorak y Tchaikovsky, el MMP compartió algunas noticias e m o c i o n a n t e s sobre cómo pla-nean la temporada 2012-13, a partir de agosto. “Nue-vas alianzas de MMP con la FIU, New World Sym-phony, Orquesta Sinfónica de Mi-ami y una fuerte alianza con el Mi-ami-Dade County Public School, que ofrecerá mas oportunidades a nuestros estudi-antes para ser mejores músicos y ciudadanos”, dijo Anna Pietraszko, Director Ejecutivo de MMP, luego añadió “el trabajo continúa este verano con nuestro campamento de verano, y hemos planea-do grandes eventos para la próxima temporada, incluyendo nuestra quinta actuación en Adrienne Arsht Center”.

The most unforgettable school year has ended.As Shelton Academy’s first 5th grade class, we have been inspired to reach higher and dream bigger, and have proven that with hard work,

diligence, and a lot of heart, amazing things are possible. And amazing things have we accomplished indeed.Beginning any new venture – whether it be a career, a business, or a

marriage – is very hard work. This year was a challenging one in many ways. We set out to do something different. To stand out from the ordinary. To be remembered for our innovation and spirit.

Our 5th grade class is so outstanding in so many ways. I can’t fully articulate how blessed I was to call myself their teacher. Are there adequate words to express the pride and elation that fills me? These seven children have enriched my life and left an indelible mark in my heart.

I will remember the little things… The “Aha!” moments that kept me going on those days when we thought we just wanted to give up. The laughter in their eyes when I made a silly - if facetious - remark about anything they knew was less than their best. The cohesiveness in the group and the bonds they forged as a team. The moments when they gave of themselves to help a classmate. One of my student’s parting words to me on the last day, inspired by the novel The Outsiders: “Ms. Stefan, stay gold.”

It really is astounding to have so much blessing.As I spent time collecting pictures and reliving the memories of this past year, I couldn’t

help but think of how phenomenal this experience has been. From beginning to end, these students filled my days with joy and reminded me that great things are possible for those who believe.

I created a movie with photos of all those things we did together... From the first Student Government Association, to the community service projects, field trips, and biweekly Doral Family Journal articles… Everything was a first, for the school, for them, and for me. Their accomplishments went beyond just academics.

When I gifted copies of the movie to each student, I did so in the hopes that it will remind them of all the good times we shared, always knowing that the best is yet ahead! Tears filled their eyes (and those of their proud parents), as we reminisced and stood in awe of all we accomplished. Our astonishment was only surpassed by our gratitude.

I thank Shelton Academy and the parents of seven little miracles for entrusting me with their greatest treasure. Their loyalty and support have meant so much to me. I’m a better person because I have known them, and it’s been my privilege to walk alongside them in this journey.

Although at times it was a taxing endeavor, I would do it all again in a heartbeat. It has undoubtedly been the most rewarding year of my career.

These young adults will be great men and women someday, and having had the chance to speak into their lives was a gift so precious, no one can put a price tag on it! A parent shared a quote with me the other day: “It is not joy that makes us grateful. It is gratitude that makes us joyful.” I am a very joyful teacher today.

Floyd, the Rock Artist and his Motion ArtBy Maria Alejandra Pulgar

His red beard and red hat are trademarks. Heglichs W. Perez, the artist known as Floyd, was born in Camagüey, Cuba and moved

to the United States in 1999 after winning the visa lottery. With that opportunity the doors to freedom, prosperity and a world of realization for all his dreams were opened. Always with a paintbrush in his hand since a young age, Floyd had so much talent that his grandfather Erasmo, brought his drawings to the art school principal and he recommended that the grandson applied, as he showed great talent and chances were high for him to pass the admission test. Irreverent, Floyd told the grandfather he would not take any admission test and Don Erasmo replied “okay, someday you will regret.” But Floyd says “I do not really have any regrets, because even though academy is really important, I did not study painting as I have a way of self-taught creativity. When the talent is there, there is no way to stop you from succeeding.”

He studied theater in Miami for 5 years. And that theater experience has been intertwined with his artistic talent and made him a pioneer of the Motion Art, an expression that combines painting with music in live shows full of action, energy, pure joy and inspiration, where blank canvases come alive to the beat of the music that accompanies Floyd while painting, facing the audience thrilled to witness a creative process unique in its style.

His paintings are definitely influenced by the great Pop Artists Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein and Pollock’s abstract expressionism. Though Floyd is a declared fan of Salvador Dali, his paintings are not influenced by the work of the artist from Figueras. When Floyd came to the United States he knew nothing about Pop Art, and it was until a friend identified some of his paintings with that artistic current that he began investigating and studying their style. Floyd says that “sometimes there are influences that are innate in yourself that you cannot explain why, they just appear when you express through your paintings.”

Inspiration for Floyd comes from life: “The world full of people, the image of people in motion. Most of my subjects are people talking, meeting, sharing; happy people. The world is full of good and bad people, people with two faces, complicated people. Faces have so much to say about a person. “And those expressive faces emerge from his imagination afloat during those intense live painting sessions, when Floyd performs along on a show with rock bands, salsa and other Latin rhythms ensembles. The biggest challenge has been when he has to make paintings live in 3 or 4 minutes during TV presentations. Is in those cases, which have been more than 40 occasions, when Floyd takes a predetermined idea of what he wants to paint, but

eventually gets carried away by the energy and inspiration of the actual situation and those fast-paced created paintings are living manifestations of his inexhaustible imagination.

He identifies as starting point for his current career, his guest appearance in 2007 in a show organized by Ricardo Montaner at the American Airlines Arena for the benefit of his foundation “La Ventana de los Cielos”, where Floyd had the opportunity to paint accompanied by live music. From there the ascent has been gradual and sustained. In 2009 he returned to AAA, painting live alongside salsa idols Jerry Rivera and Tito Nieves on a concert called “Caliente”. Then he recorded his first video art with the musician and Grammy and Latin American Grammy nominated producer Edesio Alejandro. Floyd has also painted live at the International Fashion Week and last March 2012, he was selected to paint live models during the Exhibition of Salvador Dali paintings at the Moore Building in Miami’s Design District.

The success of Floyd adventure has just begun, because his art “is not only for galleries but also large scenarios; an artist needs to keep growing and expressing himself.” Floyd is currently in negotiations with institutions in Los Angeles, New York and Europe to bring the experience of creating art with live music to other latitudes. He works on medium and large format paintings and basically his favorite

technique is acrylic on canvas. Also he has made stage sets and murals, as one made in 2006 for a school in Little Haiti. Currently, Floyd is working on a fresh mural for the CubaOcho Apogeo Foundation.

The result of his live paintings is influenced by the reaction of the audience, but mainly depends on the music that accompanies the process. “If I paint with rock it does not come out like when I paint with salsa. If the music is slower the result is more Pop Art. If music is more intense, more aggressive the picture becomes stronger, more primitive. Live painting is pure energy; I truly enjoy the process very much and it is a very intense experience for the audience. “

Many of the events where Floyd performs are to help foundations that benefit children. To Floyd, “Art has a great force in the education of children. Is therapeutic, it is like magic. Children identify a lot, when we show them what can be done live; that encourages them to express themselves, to feel free, to see everything is possible. Once you dare to express yourself in public, you take the taste and want to do it every day. “

Floyd, The Rock Artist, a name his wife Rosy coined, is constantly evolving and experimenting on how to express at the rhythm of different types of music. The age and life experiences, but mostly people are the ones who set the tone, dynamic, revolutionary and irreverent that makes Floyd a unique artist.

La barba y el sombrero rojo no lo desamparan. Son su sello. Heglichs W. Perez, el artista Flo-yd, nació en Camagüey, Cuba y se trasladó a

los Estados Unidos en 1.999 gracias a la lotería de visas. Y con esa oportunidad se le abrieron las puer-tas a la libertad, la prosperidad, el mundo y la rea-lización de sus sueños. Siempre ha estado con un pincel o un creyón en la mano, con tanto talento que su abuelo Erasmo, quien era el chofer de la escuela de arte en Cuba, le llevó sus dibujos al director de la escuela y le recomendaron que el nieto aplicara, pues mostraba gran talento y una alta posibilidad de aprobar la prueba de admisión. Irreverente, Floyd le dijo al abuelo que no presentaría ninguna prueba y Don Erasmo le respondió “esta bien, algún día te va a pesar”. Sin embargo Floyd dice “la verdad no me ha pesado mucho, porque aunque realmente la academia es muy importante, yo no estudié pintura, tengo una manera autodidacta de crear. Cuando el talento existe, no lo para nadie.”

Una vez en EEUU Floyd teatro en el Miami Studio por 5 años. Y esa experiencia con las tablas es la que ha entrelazado con su talento artístico y que le ha hecho pionero del Arte en Movimiento, una ex-presión que conjuga la pintura con la música en es-pectáculos llenos de acción, energía, alegría e inspi-ración pura, donde los lienzos en blanco toman vida al ritmo de la música mientras Floyd pinta, frente al publico emocionado al presenciar un proceso crea-tivo único en su estilo.

Sus obras tienen definitivamente influencia de los grandes del arte pop Warhol y Lichtenstein y del expresionismo abstracto de Pollock y, aunque Floyd se declara fanático de Sal-vador Dalí, no es esa la influencia en su trabajo. A Floyd le inspira pintar la vida, todo lo inspira: “El mundo lleno de personas, la ima-gen de la gente en movimiento. La mayoría de mi tema es la gen-te, reunida, compartiendo, alegre. El mundo está lleno de gente; gente buena, gente mala, gente que tiene dos caras, gente com-plicada. Los rostros tienen mucho que decir de la persona”.

Y esos rostros expresivos son los que salen a flote desde la imaginación de Floyd durante esas intensas sesiones de pintura en vivo, durante los espectácu-los donde se presenta junto con bandas de rock, salsa y otros rit-mos latinos. El mayor reto ha sido cuando le toca hacer cuadros en 3 o 4 minutos en presentaciones de televisión. En esos casos, que

han sido mas de 40 oportunidades, como por ejemplo en “Esta Noche, Tu Night” con Alexis Valdes, aunque Floyd lleve una idea predeterminada de lo que desea pintar, al fi-nal se deja llevar por la energía e inspiración del momento, y esos cuadros rápidos crea-dos al ritmo de la música son manifestacio-nes vivas de su imaginación inagotable.

Identifica como punto de arranque de su carrera actual, su participación como invitado en el año 2007 en un espectácu-lo organizado por Ricardo Montaner en el American Airlines Arena a beneficio de su fundación “La Ventana de los Cielos”, donde tuvo la oportunidad de pintar en vivo acompañado de la música. A partir de ahí el ascenso ha sido progresivo y sos-tenido. En el 2009 volvió al AAA a pintar en vivo junto a los salseros Tito Nieves y Jerry Rivera en un concierto que llamado “Caliente”. Luego grabó su primer Video-Arte con el músico y productor nomina-do al Grammy latino y americano Edesio Alejandro. Floyd también pintó en vivo en el International Fashion Week y en marzo 2012 tuvo la oportunidad de pintar mode-los en vivo durante la Exposición Itinerante de Salvador Dalí en el Moore Building del Design District de Miami.

La aventura del éxito de Floyd recién comienza pues su arte “no es solamente

de galería sino también de grandes escenarios; el artista tiene necesidad de se-guir creciendo y expresándose”. Actualmente está en negocia-ciones con instituciones en Los Ángeles, Nueva York y Europa para llevar su experiencia de crear arte con música en vivo a otras latitudes. Tiene obras de mediano y gran formato, básica-mente su técnica favorita es el acrílico sobre tela, aunque tam-bién ha hecho escenografías teatrales y murales, algunos de ellos a beneficio, como uno rea-lizado en 2006 para una escuela en Little Haití y actualmente tra-baja en uno al fresco con la fun-dación Apogeo en CubaOcho.

El resultado de sus cuadros pintados en vivo se ve influen-ciado por la reacción del público presente, pero sobre todo de-

pende de la música que lo acompaña. “Si pinto con rock no sale igual que cuando pinto con salsa. Si la

música es más lenta el cuadro sale más pop. Si es mas intensa, más agresiva el cuadro sale más fuer-te, más primitivo. Pintar en vivo es pura energía, lo disfruto muchísimo la verdad y es una experiencia muy intensa para el publico.”

Gran parte de los eventos en los cuales participa son a beneficio de fundaciones de ayuda a la infan-cia. Para Floyd “El arte tiene una gran fuerza en la educación de los niños. Es terapéutico, tiene magia. Los niños se identifican mucho, cuando les mostra-mos lo que puede hacerse eso los estimula a hacer cosas en vivo, ven que es posible. Solamente basta atreverte, después le tomas el gusto y lo quieres ha-cer todos los días”.

Floyd, el Artista del Rock, como lo bautizó su es-posa Rosy, está en constante evolución y experi-mentando expresarse al ritmo de diferentes tipos de música. La época y las experiencias de vida, pero sobre todo la gente son quienes marcan el estilo, dinámico, revolucionario e irreverente que hacen de Floyd un artista único.

No olvidemos que aparte de preocuparnos por nuestra apariencia, también debemos siempre de mantener que papá se mantenga ele-gante y presentable en todo momento. Son muy pocos los caballe-

ros que les gusta estar horas en las tiendas para sus compras... es por eso, que confían en nosotras para crearles una imagen favorable.!!

Comencemos por conocer la verdadera personalidad del caballero y las actividades que realiza a diario... No debemos regalarle piezas muy casua-les si es una persona que trabaja constantemente en una oficina o viaja por su trabajo. Lo ideal sería camisas que pueda intercambiar con sus chaquetas y pantalones. Si por el contrario el caballero se dedica a acti-vidades de menos envergadura, entonces el de seguro agradecerá piezas más casuales, sin olvidar que también pueden ser intercambiables con un pantalón casual o mas de vestir.

Luce espectacular con pantalones color azul marino, negro, marrón. Y si es de algodón, con unos “jeans” siempre lucirá bien.

Los colores básicos que siempre impresionaran aparte del color negro son: Azul Marino, Gris y Marrón. Son colores que demuestran mucha autoridad, profesionalismo y elegancia.

-El calzado en tonos básicos. Un papá siempre agradecerá los famosos “tennis” para sus “shorts” y ropa deportiva.

-Tenerle siempre una billetera adicional guardada para cuando la tiene que sustituir!!

Tiempo atrás era un trauma hablar a los hombres sobre el cuidado de la piel. Actualmente han tomado conciencia que no es coquetería, sino una necesidad. Cuando se

compara un hombre que no se cuida con uno que si lo hace se notan las pieles sin vida, resecas y arrugadas frente a pieles frescas, limpias y bien cuidadas.

Para que un hombre luzca perfectamente elegante y pre-sentable los cuidados básicos recomendados son:

La afeitada: nunca agregar lociones con base de alcohol o colonia pues irrita y mancha la piel. Fundamental utilizar hidra-tante con protección solar después de afeitar. Muchos hidra-

tantes tienen ingredientes antiarrugas. Lo importante es que el hidratante tenga protector solar para evitar el

cáncer en la piel.Limpieza del cutis: lavarse el rostro al llegar de la

calle con jabón suave, que no reseque la piel, para eliminar las impurezas del ambiente. Asegurarse de enjuagarlo bien y aplicarse el hidratante. Si quieren hacerse limpiezas de cutis profesionales, procurar que sean cada 15 días si se trabaja en oficina y 1 vez al mes si se trabaja al aire libre. Y tratar de hacerlo en fin de semana para dar tiem-po al cutis que se recupere.

Mantenimiento de las cuchillas de afeitar: desecharlas después de utilizarlas máximo 3 veces para evitar enrojecimientos e irritaciones. Igualmente estar pendientes de no pasar la afei-tadora sobre los brotes o granitos, para evitar infecciones.

Eliminar vellos indeseables de nariz y orejas y mantenimiento de cejas con canas, despeina-

das, descuidadas o sobrepobladas: Es importante utilizar una pinza o tijera especial con punta roma

para eliminar los vellos que aparecen con la edad y mantener un aspecto limpio y presentable. Las cejas

procurar tenerlas a buen nivel, para evitar que hagan ver los párpados caídos, sobre todo después de los 40 años.

Las manos: mantenerlas siempre limpias, sin morderse las uñas sino tenerlas bien cortadas, limpias y pulidas. Aplicarse crema hidratante para evitar resequedad y manchas en la piel.

Mantenimiento del cabello: tenerlo siempre bien cortado y peinado. Antes de una fecha especial hacer la cita del cor-te por lo menos una semana antes, no el mismo día. Si hay muchas canas, hay técnicas de hacer rayitos para disimularlas o reflejos en negro para que el cabello luzca entrecano y ele-gante. Mantener la barba y bigote bien cortados periódicamen-te. Si tienen cabello liso, utilizar gel. Lavar siempre con un buen champú y acondicionador. Enjuagar bien para evitar la caspa.

Para los ejecutivos que viajan se recomienda que nunca falten en su maleta: pinza o tijera para cortar los vellos de la nariz; cre-ma hidratante, un buen desodorante y su perfume predilecto en frasco pequeño.

Con estas técnicas, aunque el hombre no sea guapísimo siem-pre va a llamar la atención, porque va a verse muy bien.

Ranked number 2 in the world and the top athlete on the 78kg category in the US, Judo World Champion Kayla Harrison is the top seeded on

the 2012 USA Olympic Team. Tall, strong, beautiful, with a sweet smile, big blue eyes and golden hair, Kayla is a warrior on the mat. Her strength and solid technique are her main assets that will for sure lead her path towards a medal in London, preferably a Gold Medal. That is the goal; that is her dream; that is what she visualizes every night when she goes to sleep: making history by becoming the first Olympic Gold Medalist in Judo for the United States. And chances are really high for her to achieve it.

At six years old her mother, former Judo athlete in college, enrolled her little girl in Judo classes for self-defense. Kayla started competing at 7, when she was 13 years old she began thinking on trying for the Olympics and by 16 she started to show her potential

that now has reached its full bloom. Kayla Harrison at 22 is nowadays at the top of her physical condition to make her the golden hope for Judo in London. In order to achieve that, her training routine has become increasingly intense as the August 2nd London appearance date approaches.

Daily training schedule includes up to two hours of judo in the morning and an hour and a half at night; also strength training every day and running three times a week. She trains Monday through Saturday, resting on Sundays. And she could not hope for a better coach and mentor but Jimmy Pedro, himself twice Bronze Olympic Medalist, who has been her coach since she moved to Boston from her native Ohio in 2006. He is determined on helping Kayla become the historic First Judo Golden Girl for the United States. And Kayla is completely committed to the task in hand.

Her stubbornness for winning, passion for the sport, perseverance on overcoming obstacles and focus on the ultimate goal are the traits that hold her during those extended training hours. For her, the main factors that make an Olympic athlete are “heart, mental toughness; a strong support system, having the right team behind you; experience and talent“. And she definitely has them all, the perfect recipe for Olympic success.

Kayla names her coaches “Big Jim and Jimmy” (Jimmy Pedro Sr. and Jr.) as her greatest inspiration in the sport. About them she says “they push me to be the best that I can be, on and off the mat. They have helped to succeed not only in judo, but in life.” Kayla was a huge fan of Jimmy Pedro Jr.’s achievements even before getting to know him. Training under his watch at the USA Judo National Training Site in Boston is like a dream come true for her. She also credits her fiancé for helping her succeed as an athlete “He is my

rock and I am so grateful for him”She remembers noticing how

important it is to participate in the Olympics very early in her life. She must have been around 6 years old, not even practicing any sport yet, when she watched the ’96 Olympics track and field competitions. She thought about how hard but how exciting being there, in front of the whole world, becoming the best of the bests would be. And as the years passed, when she was put up to the challenge of joining the Olympic trials training she did not hesitate a bit to

do it. The results of that long journey will be put to the test in London. She is confident she will pass that test with flying colors. She is prepared, she has trained hard, she knows exactly what she is doing, believes in her capacity and abilities, she has already visualized herself on top of the podium listening to “Star Spangled Banner” in London.

Her most recent achievement has been getting the gold medal on the Grand Slam tournament in Rio de Janeiro last June 10th, where she beat Brazilian athlete Samanta Soares by ippon. This is the last big tournament before the Olympics and has been a success, for her and also for fellow Olympic team member Travis Stevens who obtained a silver medal on his division.

Kayla’s plans upon coming back from the Games are first and foremost going on a cruise to relax and

recover from all the hard work, and after that she plans on going back to school and becoming a firefighter. About being a role model for many young athletes in the country she considers it is “a huge honor and privilege to be looked up to by so many. I realize that it is a heavy load but I love it. I have always wanted to be Olympic Champion, now others want me to win too so I consider it a compliment” and she embraces the challenge with her sweet beautiful smile. She is certainly ready to bring that Gold Medal home.

Conozca a los miembros del Equipo Olimpico de Judo de USA Kayla Harrison: La Chica Dorada, La Esperanza del Oro

Es la número 2 del mundo y la número 1 en los EEUU en la categoría femenina de 78 Kgs. Campeona del Mundo y miembro del Equipo de Judo Olímpico

para Londres 2012, Kayla Harrison es una muchacha alta, fuerte, preciosa; con una dulce sonrisa, grandes y expre-sivos ojos azules y cabello dorado. Sin embargo, Kayla es una guerrera cuando viste el Gi y se sube al tatami. Su fuerza y solidez técnica son los principales activos que la encaminan directamente hacia una medalla en los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres. De preferencia que sea de oro. Ese es su objetivo; ese es el logro que visualiza todas las noches: Kayla se ve haciendo historia al convertirse en la primera medallista de Oro Olímpico para el Judo de los Estados Unidos. Y tiene muy altas probabilidades que así sea.

Cuando tenía 6 años, su madre, quien había practica-do judo en su época universitaria, inscribió a la pequeña Kayla Harrison en clases de Judo en su nativo Ohio, para que aprendiera a defenderse. A los 7 años comenzó a competir; a los 13 empezó a pensar en serio en la posibi-lidad de ir a los Juegos Olímpicos y para los 16 comenzó a mostrar el potencial que hoy en día ha florecido. Kayla Harrison a los 22 se encuentra en su máxima condición física, hecho este que la convierte en la Esperanza del Oro olímpico para el Judo de este país. Para llegar a esa condición, la rutina de entrenamiento es cada vez mas

intensa en la medida que se aproxima el 2 de Agosto de 2012, cuando representará a los EEUU en Londres.

Su entrenamiento diario incluye dos horas de judo en la mañana y una hora y media en la noche; acondiciona-miento físico diariamente y carrera 3 veces por semana. Entrena de lunes a sábado, y descansa los domingos. Y no podría contar con un mejor mentor que el propio Jimmy Pedro jr., dos veces medallista olímpico de bron-ce, quien ha sido su entrenador desde que ella se mudó

a Boston en 2006. Pedro está de-cidido a que ella se convierta en la histórica Primera Chica Dorada del Judo para los EEUU. Y Kayla está completamente comprome-tida a cumplir. Su obstinación por ganar, la pasión por el deporte, la perseverancia en la superación de obstáculos y su enfoque en lograr sus objetivos son los rasgos que le mantienen durante las arduas horas de entrenamiento. Para ella, los fac-tores que hacen de un deportista un Atleta Olímpico son “ponerle cora-zón; fortaleza mental; contar con el equipo de apoyo adecuado que te sostenga; acumular experiencia y tener talento”. Y ella definitivamen-te los tiene todos; la receta perfecta para el Éxito Olímpico.

Kayla identifica a sus entrenado-res “Big Jim y Jimmy” (Jimmy Pe-dro Sr y Jr.) como su mayor inspiración en el deporte y afirma que “la impulsan a dar lo mejor de mi, dentro y fuera del tatami. Me han ayudado a tener éxito no solo en el judo sino en la vida.” Ella era fan de los logros de Jimmy Pedro Jr., incluso antes de conocerlo. Entrenar bajo su tutela, en el Centro de Entrenamiento Nacional de Judo en Boston es como un sueño hecho realidad para ella. Ella también da crédito de su éxito a su prome-tido, quien es su “fuerza y apoyo, estoy muy agradecida de tenerlo en mi vida.”

Kayla recuerda darse cuenta de lo importante que es participar en los Juegos Olímpicos desde muy temprana edad alrededor de los 6 años, cuando ni siquiera prac-ticaba ningún deporte y vio las competencias del ‘96. Pensó lo emocionante que sería estar allí, delante de todo el mundo, convirtiéndose en la mejor de las mejo-res. Y a medida que pasaban los años, cuando se puso el reto de incorporarse al largo camino de entrenamiento y preparación para las Olimpiadas, no dudó nunca que estaría a la altura. Los resultados de ese largo viaje se pondrán a prueba en Londres. Ella confía en que pasará la prueba con éxito. Se ha preparado y ha entrenado duro; sabe exactamente lo que está haciendo, cree en su capacidad y habilidades, y ya se ha visualizado a sí misma en la parte superior del podio escuchando el Himno Nacional en Londres.

Su logro más reciente fue la medalla de oro en el torneo de Grand Slam en Río de Janeiro el pasado 10 de junio, donde derrotó a la judoka brasilera Samanta Soares por Ippon. Este es el último torneo importante antes de los Juegos Olímpicos y ha sido un éxito, para

ella y también para otro de sus compañeros del equipo Olímpico, Travis Stevens, quien obtuvo una medalla de plata en su división.

Los planes de Kayla al regresar de los Juegos son, ante todo, salir en un crucero para relajarse y recupe-rarse del cansancio; después desea volver a estudiar y convertirse en bombero. Cuando piensa que es mo-delo para muchos atletas jóvenes en el país, ella con-sidera que es “un gran honor y privilegio que tantos puedan admirar lo que yo hago. Me doy cuenta que es una gran responsabilidad y la acepto gustosa. Siem-pre quise ser Campeona Olímpica y cuando veo que muchos también quieren que yo llegue a esa meta no puedo menos que sentirme halagada”. Kayla Harrison acepta el reto; está realmente lista para traer esa Me-dalla de Oro a casa.

It is the last inning of the final regular season game. A championship is on the line. The home-team is on the field; the visitors are batting and are down by 1 run. The bases are loaded with two outs. The home team has

just changed their pitcher. It is all down to these two players: pitcher and batter! Strike one; two; three, you’re out! The home team keeps their lead and wins in a nail-biting final. This is not a report of a MLB game, but of the final game of the spring season of the Doral Little League (DLL) Minors Division.

Both teams, Marlins (home team) and Athletics (visitors) had incredible performances. This group of 9 to 11 year old boys, together with their parents and coaches, had a positive season that ended in this exhilarating game. “The success of Doral Little League Minors Division, as well as all of our other divisions, is the family atmosphere and parent involvement across the board,” explains Ronda Flaquer, the President of Doral Little League for over a year now. “We have strict boundaries, and in essence we home-grow our players,” states Flaquer. A lot of these kids have been playing together since they were 6 years old. The spring season lasted 3 months and had the participation of 6 teams in the Minors division (Marlins, Athletics, Pirates, Phillies, Padres and Braves).

The Doral Little League Minors’ season was extremely competitive. The top position was always switching between the Marlins and Athletics, with Pirates threatening at a certain point. The Marlins were a half-game behind the Athletics going into the final game. They had an early lead (with one run) at the start of the game; however at the top of the 3rd the Athletics scored 4 runs. The Marlins scored 5 in the bottom of the 3rd to re-gain the lead.

Excitement took over in the 5thinning: the Athletics scored one more in the top to make it a one-run game. The Athletics then held the Marlins scoreless in the bottom of the 5th to keep the game extremely close. When the A’s came to bat in the top of the 6th, they managed to load the bases. However, the Marlin’s defense and pitching held strong, and the Athletics were not able to score. The Marlins took the Spring 2012 regular season championship with a 6-5 win! Ms. Flaquer went to see this game. “I have 23 teams under my umbrella, but I did not want to miss this one. I knew it would be special!”

Now that we are still recovering from such excitement, we would like to congratulate all the teams, their coaches and the parents for making this a memorable season, and applaud the DLL for their contribution to the sporting spirit of our community.

Here are the names of the Marlins players: Jose Baptista, Ruben Coll, Ivan Garces, Issac Guadagnino, Gabriel Lafee,

Angelo Miranda, Christian Puig, Diego Quinones, Manuel Romero, Simon Tineo, Matthew Vera and Eduardo Yepes.

The Marlins are managed by Oswaldo Lafee and Jose Vera.

Estamos en el último inning del final de la temporada regular. Está en juego un campeonato. El equipo sede está en el campo, los visitantes están al bate perdiendo por 1 carrera. Las bases están llenas y hay dos outs. El

equipo de casa acaba de cambiar su lanzador. Todo está en manos de estos dos jugadores: lanzador vs. bateador. Strike uno, dos, tres, out! El equipo sede mantiene su ventaja y gana en esta final electrizante. Este no es un reporte de la Grandes Ligas, sino de la final de la temporada de primavera de la Liga de Doral (DLL) - División Menor.

Ambos equipos, Marlins (sede) y Atléticos (visitantes) tuvieron un desempeño increíble. Este grupo de niños entre 9 y 11 años, junto a sus padres y entrena-dores, protagonizaron una temporada extraordinaria que culminó en este juego exhilarante. “El éxito de la liga en Doral - División Menor, así como de las otras ligas, se debe al ambiente familiar y a la participación de los padres”, explica Ron-da Flaquer, presidente de DLL desde hace más de un año. “Tenemos límites muy estrictos y en esencia desarrollamos nuestros propios jugadores,“ aclara Flaquer. Muchos de estos niños han estado jugando juntos desde los 6 años. La tempo-rada de primavera duró 3 meses y esta división estaba conformada por 6 equipos (Marlins, Padres, Piratas, Phillies, Atléticos y los Bravos).

La División Menor del Doral Little League es sumamente competitiva. La pelea por el primer lugar estuvo muy cerrada entre los Marlins y los Atléticos, con los Piratas amenazando en ciertos momentos. Los Marlins estaban medio juego por debajo de Los Atléticos cuando comenzó la final. Habían anotado una carrera en el primer inning, pero en el cierre del tercero los Atléticos anotaron 4. Los Marlins retomaron la ventaja en el comienzo del quinto inning con 5 carreras en total. La emoción llego al máximo cuando los Atléticos anotaron y se colocaron a 1 carrera del empate. En el cierre del sexto inning, Los Atléticos lograron llenar las bases pero la eficaz defensa y lanzamiento de los Marlins no permitieron que los Atléticos anotaran. Los Marlins ganaron el campeonato: 6 a 5! Ms. Flaquer fue a este juego. “Tengo que velar por 23 equipos, pero no me quise perder este juego. Sabía que iba a ser especial.”

Ya recuperados de esta emoción, quisiéramos felicitar a todos los equipos, a sus entrenadores y padres por hacer de ésta una temporada memorable, y aplau-dimos a DLL por su contribución al espíritu deportivo de nuestra comunidad.

The season began with an eager and motivated group of students that were excited to show what one more year of experience and improvement can accomplish. Our first games of the season were against Devon Aire and

Doral Academy, two great athletic programs within our division. Unfortunately, after experiencing these two hard-fought losses, we very quickly realized that we had a lot of hard work ahead of us. We had a team meeting in which I, as well as some of the team veterans, spoke our opinions about what our team was about, what we were capable of, and what we wanted to truly accomplish this year. We knew we had a special team; we just needed time to develop team chemistry and unity. As our team began playing other teams that were also in their developing stages we managed to win our remaining seven games. It wasn’t until our second to last game, which was played against Somerset Eureka, that our team experienced another incredible challenge. Unfortunately, our team had a 10 point deficit by the end of half time. The boys had enough mental maturity and toughness, to persevere, storm back into the game, and force the game into overtime.

We ended up winning that game during overtime. After this, the boys had a greater amount of confidence and positive momentum pushing them into the playoffs. In the playoffs we played against Archimedean in the 1st round. In the second round we had our long awaited rematch against Doral Academy which was one of the teams that had beat us earlier in the year.

After many “in game” adjustments, and great defensive discipline from our boys, we came out victorious in that game. In the finals we had our rematch against one of our toughest and only overtime games of the year, Somerset Eureka, at Ghould’s Gym. Our boys knew that after playing a hard fought overtime game against them earlier in the season, and having lost by such a small margin, the other team would have incredible motivation to push and play harder against us. Our boys showed incredible discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship in that final game. They got off to a quick start, they developed a small lead and used great defensive toughness to protect it all game long. In the end we won the ISL Championship Game 37 – 27. Needless to say, this is one of my greatest and proudest moments as a coach ever. I’m very proud of the 2011- 2012 RMCS Varsity Basketball Team.

El pasado 10 de junio en las instalaciones de Doral Meadows Park se llevó a cabo la entrega de medallas de Doral Little League a todos sus jugadores ante la participación en todas las categorías del béisbol menor desde los 5 años hasta el Juvenil con jugadores de 16 años, dando por culminada esta temporada.Hay que recordar que Doral Little League, sigue promoviendo y divulgando la práctica del béisbol en nuestra área, que año tras año ha ido creciendo progresivamente.

On Saturday, June 2, 2012, the Miami Springs/Virginia Gardens Optimist Club (MSVG Optimists), along with the Biscayne Lady Yacht Charters and Incredible Fish, once again joined forces to host their annual “Kids Day Out” Eco-Tour, an opportunity for young children to experience one of the many great pleasures of South Florida: the natural beauty of Biscayne Bay.This was the seventh year that the MSVG Optimists host the “Kids Day Out.” Each year, this event gets better, as the MSVG

Optimist Club continues its mission to positively influence the lives of South Florida’s youth. Throughout the year, the MSVG Optimists raise money to support community youth programs, activities and groups, from sports leagues to safety education to civic involvement. The “Kids Day Out” Eco-Tour kicks off the season for the Club’s signature fundraiser: the Miami Springs/Virginia Gardens Dolphin Classic and Community Fish Fry. Now in its 11th year, the Dolphin Tournament will be held on

El pasado 30 de mayo se llevó la charla “El Poder de la Sonrisa” organizada por Photo Correale con la presencia de New Smile Dental Group de Costa Rica. Como invitada especial estuvo Erika Ruiz maestra certificada de Yoga de la Risa, quien mostró los beneficios de esta técnica para reducir el estrés y mejorar la calidad de vida. Al final se presentaron los beneficios médicos y de salud relacionados con la sonrisa.

El pasado 30 de Mayo, las 60 niñas scouts de la tropa 552 de nuestra ciudad celebraron su ceremonia de graduación o “Bridging” siendo promovidas a niveles superiores de la experiencia Scout. Fue muy emotivo despedir a las Jóvenes del nivel “Ambassador” quienes han vivido como scouts desde muy pequeñas y ahora, ya adultas, comienzan sus estudios superiores en prestigiosas casas de estudios como Boston Collegue, Boston University, Drexel University, University of Florida y Miami Dade Honors.
