The new Mary Rose Museum Portsmouth Historic Dockyard 2013 will continue the excitement of the momentous 30th anniversary of the raising of Tudor warship, the Mary Rose, when a new museum opens at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, reuniting the hull and many of the 19,000 artefacts that were raised with her once more. The £35 million heritage project to build an internationally-renowned museum and complete the conservation of the ship will showcase the very best in 21st century architecture and the finest collection of 16th century artefacts in the world. For the first time visitors will see the ship with its preserving sprays switched off, through windows into a ‘hotbox’, as up to 100 tons of water is removed from the timbers.
The artefacts will be displayed in mirror-image context galleries running the length of the ship, so visitors can experience what the decks would have looked like moments before the Mary Rose sank. Six themed galleries will tell the personal stories and working lives of the crew on board.
